Private jet charter in Sheffield

A light jet leaves a London airfield and is on the ground in the East Midlands in about half an hour, yet a Sheffield booking is settled by the hour of road that comes after it: the city has no airport of its own, and every airfield that can take a business jet and clear customs is an hour or more from the centre. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around that hour. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Manchester are the three gateways we use, with East Midlands as the default, and the airport that carried Sheffield's name, east of the city at Doncaster, is closed to traffic. From anywhere else in Britain the flight is domestic from start to finish, with no border to cross.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sheffield depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Sheffield?

About 30 minutes from Luton in a light jet and about 35 minutes from London City, Farnborough and Biggin Hill, with no change of clock from anywhere in Britain. The aircraft lands at East Midlands, because Sheffield has no airport, and the figures below are for that sector. At 70 to 275 nautical miles these are short hops, where the climb and the descent take a large share of the flight and a minimum charge replaces the distance calculation. The drive from East Midlands into Sheffield, about an hour, is longer than the flight from the London fields. Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool are missing on purpose: they are so close to the three gateways that the car or the train beats the charter.

Door to door, and the hour on the road

Sheffield is a city where the train is a serious rival. The fastest train from St Pancras takes 1 hour 58 minutes and the typical one 2 hours 16 minutes, with up to two an hour. By road, London is about 165 miles and three hours away. A jet adds the drive to the London field, the walk to the aircraft, the flight of about 30 to 35 minutes, and then the road from East Midlands, which is 54 miles on the M1 and about an hour; Leeds Bradford is about 1 hour 10 minutes from the centre and Manchester about 1 hour 20 minutes. Taken for one passenger going to a meeting in the centre, the whole journey comes to roughly three hours, about what the train takes. The charter wins for a party of four to eight, for a start at Farnborough, Biggin Hill or Luton and not at a terminus, for a day that goes on to Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle, and for a helicopter finish that turns the last hour into about 25 minutes.

Turboprop or light jet: the question on a British sector

– The Pilatus PC-12 prices at £3,100 one way on every sector up to about 200 nautical miles, where a Citation CJ3+ costs £5,300. From the north and Scotland the turboprop is the aircraft to ask for, and it gives away only ten minutes or so: about 50 minutes from Newcastle against about 40 minutes in the jet;

– From London the gap is just as small. A PC-12 from Luton needs about 35 minutes against about 30 minutes in the CJ3+, and from Biggin Hill about 45 minutes against 35 minutes. We quote it on request at £3,100, a saving of £2,200, and the jet is chosen for the cabin and for the bags more than for the speed;

– A midsize or larger cabin is for a full party, for a snooker final weekend with a hospitality group, or for a trip that goes on from the East Midlands to the Alps or the Gulf. The runway at East Midlands is 2,893 m, so no business jet we would propose is ruled out by length.

Nearly every figure in the table is one of two numbers: £3,100 for the turboprop and £5,300 for the light jet. That is not rounding. A one-way charter is billed with the aircraft's return positioning, and on sectors this short a minimum charge replaces the distance calculation, so Bristol at 105 nautical miles costs the same as Luton at 70, and Newcastle at 138 the same as Belfast at 202 by turboprop. Only the longer Scottish turboprop sectors rise above the floor: Edinburgh to £3,150, Glasgow to £3,250 and Aberdeen to £3,850. The practical rule is simple: choose the departure field by the drive to the aircraft and not by the price, because the nearest one is the cheapest in effect.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Out of the East Midlands: three kinds of trip

The first is the hop. The Isle of Man is 145 nautical miles away and Dublin 189, both turboprop work of about 55 minutes and 1 h 05 min. Ireland and the Isle of Man belong to the Common Travel Area, but the flight is still international for paperwork and needs a General Aviation Report. The second is the European business sector: Amsterdam in about 55 minutes, Paris Le Bourget in about 1 h and Geneva in about 1 h 30 min, which is the ski run for a Sheffield family. The third is the long haul. East Midlands has a 2,893 m runway and two handlers that list round-the-clock opening, so a Gulf departure is comfortable on the airport side. What we check is the aircraft: most large jets are based in London or Manchester, and a flight out of the Midlands may start with a positioning leg that is the part of the bill most worth negotiating.

Before you accept an onward quote

– Which gateway, and at what hour. Both East Midlands handlers list round-the-clock opening, Leeds Bradford's handler works 08:00 to 18:00, and Signature at Manchester publishes 06:00 to 22:00 with a call-out outside it. A 06:30 departure for the Alps points to East Midlands;

– Whether the hour on the road is in the plan. Sheffield to East Midlands is about an hour by the M1, so an 08:00 departure means leaving the hotel at about half past six. Put the car in the quote with the flight;

– Whether it is one booking. Sheffield to Geneva and home a week later costs less as a single trip, with the aircraft waiting or positioned nearby, than as two one-way charters each flown in from elsewhere.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Sheffield:

Light jets, the usual choice from London

At 30 to 35 minutes in the air this is the class for four to six people with ordinary luggage. The runway at East Midlands is 2,893 m, so none of these is limited by it, and the money goes on the cabin and not on capability you will not use.

Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for the full row of colleagues

A board party of eight with laptops, a hospitality group for the Crucible or a family with ski bags fills the hold before the seats. A midsize cabin keeps the party together and carries on from the Midlands to Geneva or Nice without a fuel stop.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a delegation that travels as one group, for the Faro sector, for Gulf and transatlantic trips from East Midlands or Manchester, and for a team that wants to work in the air on the way to a meeting.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The sensible aircraft for Newcastle, Scotland and Belfast, and for the hops to Dublin and the Isle of Man. The quote sits at the minimum charge on every one of these sectors, and the turboprop loses only a few minutes to a jet.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the hour that follows it: from the airport into Sheffield, or on to a country house, a showground or a hotel in the Peaks. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote, not after it.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Sheffield sits between the Midlands and the Yorkshire fleets, and outside a snooker final weekend or the week of a festival there is usually an aircraft already within reach in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham or the East Midlands, so a quote may name one of those cities as the positioning point. That is normal and often where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports around Sheffield

Sheffield has no working airport, and that is the first thing to settle. Three airports do the work, the one that carried the city's name is closed, and the small fields nearby are for light aircraft. Each is described below with the handler, the hours and the kind of trip it suits.

Airport What it gives you
East Midlands
EMA / EGNX
Our default gateway for Sheffield. A single asphalt runway, 09/27, of 2,893 m, beside the M1, 54 miles from the centre of Sheffield by road, which the airport puts at around an hour. There are two handlers: Signature Flight Support in Building 33 on Dakota Road, and Advantage Flight Support, an independent terminal. Both list round-the-clock opening, customs and immigration on site, passenger and crew lounges, a conference room, catering and fuel, and night noise abatement applies. The airport is one of the main cargo hubs in Britain, home to DHL, UPS and FedEx, and it is listed in the government's general aviation guidance with customs, immigration and police status. The straight-line distance to Sheffield is about 35 nautical miles
Leeds Bradford
LBA / EGNM
The second choice, and the better one when the aircraft or the passengers come from Yorkshire, Newcastle or Scotland. About 31 nautical miles from Sheffield in a straight line and about 1 hour 10 minutes by road. A single runway, 14/32, of 2,250 m at 681 ft, the highest airport in England. The one handler for business flights is Multiflight, handling is mandatory, and its normal hours are 08:00 to 18:00 every day, with prior permission and out-of-hours charges outside them. The airport has customs, immigration and police status, and night movements between 23:00 and 07:00 are capped
Manchester
MAN / EGCC
The better start for a long-haul departure or an Atlantic crossing. About 30 nautical miles from Sheffield in a straight line and about 1 hour 20 minutes by road over the Peak District. Two runways of roughly 3,050 m, two handlers (Signature Flight Support, open 06:00 to 22:00 with a call-out outside those hours, and Weston Aviation with aether, The Private Terminal), customs, immigration and police status, and night restrictions that we check against the hour of your flight
Doncaster Sheffield
DSA / EGCN
Closed to traffic. It has no scheduled flights, air traffic control was withdrawn after the closure, and no charter or private business flights can be booked from its runway of about 2,900 m, 02/20. The airport stands on the former RAF Finningley, about 3 miles south-east of Doncaster and 18 miles east of Sheffield, and was known for years as Robin Hood Airport. Public bodies are working towards a reopening, first for freight and later for passengers, but no date exists that a charter could be planned around, and the airport is not listed in the government's guidance among the aerodromes with customs, immigration and police status. We do not propose it
Humberside
HUY / EGNJ
About 43 nautical miles east-north-east of Sheffield, near Hull and Grimsby, with a 2,196 m runway and a fixed-base operator, Weston Aviation, the first dedicated one at the airport. It is listed in the government's guidance with two of the three statuses, against three for East Midlands. It earns a place here only when the real destination is the Humber or the Lincolnshire coast, and not Sheffield itself
Netherthorpe and Retford Gamston
EGNF / EGNE
The two small fields nearest to the city. Netherthorpe, about 11 nautical miles east near Worksop, is run by Sheffield Aero Club and has grass runways of 553 m and 382 m. Gamston, about 20 nautical miles east-south-east near Retford, has an asphalt runway of 1,199 m and a Diamond twin air-taxi operator. Both are for light aircraft and flying training. Neither has the full customs, immigration and police status of the three gateways, and we would use neither for an arrival from abroad or for a business jet charter
Leeds East and Sherburn-in-Elmet
EGCM / EGCJ
Private-use fields east of Leeds, both about 17 nautical miles from Leeds Bradford. Leeds East at Church Fenton, about 30 nautical miles from Sheffield, has a 1,826 m runway that its owners aimed at the business jet market, but a licence for scheduled and charter flights was refused, so it is a case-by-case option that we confirm in writing. Sherburn has an 830 m tarmac runway and grass strips and is a flying-club field
Sheffield City (Tinsley)
closed
The only airport that ever stood in the city, at Tinsley beside the M1, with a runway of 1,211 m. Its scheduled services ended after a few years, it lost its licence and closed, and the site is now part of the Advanced Manufacturing Park. We mention it because it still turns up in searches and on old maps

Four points settle most Sheffield arrivals:

Choose the gateway by the road

All three gateways are an hour or more from the centre, so the airport is chosen by where the party is going afterwards. East Midlands suits the city, the south of the Peaks and the M1; Leeds Bradford suits a party coming from the north; Manchester suits the Hope Valley and Snake Pass side and the long haul. Give us the final address before we name the airport.

Handler, hours and night limits

Both East Midlands handlers list round-the-clock opening, though night noise abatement applies. Leeds Bradford's handler works 08:00 to 18:00, and Manchester's Signature 06:00 to 22:00 with a call-out. A late snooker session, a Tramlines night or a Doc/Fest dinner is where this matters, so we confirm the hour with the handler before the quote.

Border and passport

Flights from elsewhere in Britain have no border control at all. Anything from abroad, Ireland and the Isle of Man included, must land at an airport with customs, and East Midlands, Leeds Bradford and Manchester are all listed with that status. We file the General Aviation Report and confirm the border cover with the handler. Visitors who need no visa but are not British or Irish must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding.

Car, or a helicopter

Sheffield is on the far side of the Peak District from Manchester and a good hour from every runway, so the car and the driver go into the quote from the start. For a party that does not want the hour, a helicopter from the apron to a landing site near the venue is the alternative, and it is agreed before the aircraft is booked.

business aviation

Border, passport and why the first landing matters

A flight that starts and ends in Britain needs no border formalities, which is half the appeal of a Sheffield charter for a client coming up from London or across from Glasgow. The paperwork begins with anything that touches another country, and that includes Ireland and the Isle of Man: the government's online service for General Aviation Reports covers international flights to and from the United Kingdom, the Common Travel Area included, and domestic flights are excluded. The report is filed between 48 and 2 hours before departure. An aircraft arriving from outside the country must land first at a regulated aerodrome unless Border Force agrees otherwise, which in practice means East Midlands, Leeds Bradford or Manchester for Sheffield. The penalty is £2,500 for a first landing at a non-regulated aerodrome and £2,000 for each passenger carried without permission.

For passengers it is simple. British and Irish passport holders need nothing further, and most other visitors who do not need a visa must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they board. Leaving for the Schengen area is a different matter, because a British passport holder meets EU border checks on arrival. We pass the passenger list and passport details to the handler in good time, so that clearance is arranged and nobody stands at the aircraft door. Give us the nationalities in the party when you ask for a quote.

From the apron to the Peaks

Sheffield is a city with a long list of things around it. The centre is compact: the Town Hall and the Peace Gardens, the Winter Garden, the cathedral and the Crucible Theatre all stand close together. The distances that matter run outward, to the airports, to the Peak District and to the old steel valleys.

The Peak District is the reason most visitors leave the city. About a third of Sheffield lies inside the national park, the first in Britain, and the park as a whole covers about 1,440 square kilometres, with Kinder Scout at 636 m and more than 13 million visitors a year. Bakewell is the only town inside it. Chatsworth, the seat of the Duke of Devonshire, stands in a park of about 1,000 acres, and its garden alone draws about 300,000 visitors a year. Haddon Hall, a medieval house of the Manners family, is a short distance away on the Wye. Castleton, at the head of the Hope Valley, has Peveril Castle above the village and the Blue John show caves beneath it.

Sheffield itself is a working city with about 556,000 residents, built on steel and cutlery and now on education, health, advanced manufacturing and services. Meadowhall, the shopping centre on the old Hecla steelworks site, draws about 30 million visitors a year. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, a partnership of Boeing and the University of Sheffield, sits on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, which covers part of the ground where Sheffield City Airport once stood. Magna, in Rotherham, occupies a former steelworks and is used for events and conferences. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University together bring about 60,000 students, and the two football grounds, Bramall Lane and Hillsborough, stage the Steel City derby.

Flying to Sheffield with a dog or a cat

A pet on a flight from an English, Welsh or Scottish airfield to Sheffield sits in the cabin beside the owner, and nothing has to be declared, because the flight never leaves Great Britain. The one requirement is the microchip that British law already demands for a dog. Paperwork begins only when the flight starts or finishes abroad. The listings for the East Midlands handlers do not mention pets, so we confirm the arrangements for the animal with the handler in writing.

private flight with animals

What each type of Sheffield flight asks of the animal:

  • From England, Wales or Scotland: nothing beyond the microchip and the usual documents for the operator;
  • From Northern Ireland: a dog or cat coming back to Great Britain is not checked on the way, and a dog needs no tapeworm treatment on the return from Northern Ireland. In the other direction, an animal going from Great Britain to Northern Ireland needs a separate document and notification;
  • From abroad into East Midlands, Leeds Bradford or Manchester: a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival, a pet travel document and a declaration are required, and no more than five animals may travel with one person. Cats do not need the tapeworm treatment;
  • From Sheffield to the EU: a microchip fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination, a rabies vaccination from 12 weeks of age followed by a 21-day wait, and an Animal Health Certificate for each trip, valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A Great Britain pet passport is not valid for entry to the EU.

What catches owners out on a Sheffield trip

– The country the animal is going to. Ireland, Finland, Malta and Norway add a tapeworm treatment for dogs on the way in, and Northern Ireland has a separate notice and document for animals arriving from Great Britain. A weekend in Dublin with a dog is one to raise with the first quote;

– The return flight. The certificate carries its own validity for the return to Great Britain, so read the dates on the paper before the trip and not after it;

– Quarantine. If the rules are not met on arrival in Great Britain, an animal can be held in quarantine for up to four months, and rules for countries outside the listed group are stricter and need a blood test.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

The Sheffield calendar: snooker, documentaries, a festival in the park and ice hockey

Sheffield has a calendar with sharp peaks and flat valleys. The spring belongs to the Crucible, June to the documentary industry, late July to Hillsborough Park, and the dark months to ice hockey and the derby. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

April to May
The World Snooker Championship, staged at the Crucible Theatre every year since the late 1970s. The main competition runs for 17 days and ends on the first Monday of May, with the final over two days. The auditorium holds 980, so tickets and hotel rooms are the scarce items, not aircraft. A party for the final weekend books the room first and the flight second
June
Sheffield Doc/Fest, the biggest documentary festival in Britain and an industry market, with screenings at City Hall, the Crucible and other venues and more than two thousand industry delegates from dozens of countries in a typical edition. Producers, commissioning editors and funders come in for several days, many from abroad, and clear customs at one of the gateways
July
Tramlines, a three-day city festival from Friday to Sunday in late July, held in Hillsborough Park since it left the city-centre venues and listed with a capacity of 50,000. Artists, sponsors and hospitality guests are the private traffic, flown in for the evening and out again after
Spring and summer
Chatsworth, where the horse trials and the country fair are staged on the flat ground north-west of the house. Their dates have moved from one year to the next, so we confirm the date before building a trip around either. The house and the garden are open for most of the visiting season
Autumn to spring
Sheffield Steelers of the Elite Ice Hockey League at the Utilita Arena, which holds 9,512, and the arena's concerts. A home game or a show brings a party in for the evening, and the Steel City derby between United and Wednesday adds football on the same weekends
Through the year
The two universities, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, conferences at Magna and the weekday traffic of the regional firms. These make the steady business flying that keeps the Midlands gateways busy outside the events

Why the Crucible fortnight and Tramlines weekend cost more

Aircraft are not the scarce item. Everything around them is. In the last days of the snooker championship and on the Tramlines weekend the same city draws on the same hotels, the same drivers and the same handlers, and the working day of each handler is full. A request made a fortnight ahead can usually still be met, at a higher price and sometimes with an aircraft positioned from Manchester or Birmingham. The same trip booked six weeks out is simpler and cheaper. On an ordinary Tuesday in October, by contrast, Sheffield can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Sheffield price down

  • Use the turboprop from the north and Scotland, and ask for it from London as well. Up to about 200 nautical miles the PC-12 is £3,100 against £5,300 for a light jet, and eight people do not need a bigger cabin;
  • Pick the departure field by the drive. The London fields cost the same to East Midlands, so the nearest one is the cheapest in effect;
  • Ask where the aircraft sleeps. One already based in Manchester, Leeds or the East Midlands needs less positioning than one coming up from the south coast, and positioning is a big share of a short sector;
  • Move the date if it can move. A midweek day in October costs less than the closing weekend of the snooker, and a booking six weeks ahead costs less than one in the last fortnight.

Types of flights

Sheffield mixes things that other British cities keep apart: a world snooker venue, a festival city, a steel and engineering base and the gateway to the Peaks.

  • Business and professional travel from London and the south, with a same-day return as the usual shape;
  • Hospitality for the Crucible, the Steelers and the Steel City derby, flown in for the day or the evening and out again after;
  • Documentary, music and festival guests for Doc/Fest and Tramlines, often arriving from Europe and clearing customs at the gateway;
  • Manufacturing and research visits to the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham and the steel companies, with an aerospace and engineering client base;
  • Country-house and heritage days at Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Castleton and the Derwent reservoirs, often with a helicopter for the last stretch;
  • University and family travel, including ski departures from East Midlands to Geneva and the Alps.

The London day return is the one to look at closely. Leave Biggin Hill at seven, land at East Midlands a little after half past seven and, after the hour on the M1, be in a Sheffield meeting by nine. The aircraft and crew wait at the handler, which is a real line in the quote, though it usually still beats two separate one-way charters because the aircraft is not flown home empty and then fetched again. At about 35 minutes in the air each way it also leaves most of the working day free, although the train, at a little under two hours into the centre, is the benchmark to beat. A helicopter from the apron cuts the road hour to about 25 minutes and makes the charter the faster option.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Sheffield has several seasonal peaks that create them, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Sheffield empty legs come from

– Event days. An aircraft that has brought a party to the Crucible, Tramlines or a Doc/Fest week goes home empty late that night or the next morning, and that leg is the one most often offered;

– London weekends. Aircraft based in the Midlands and the north fly south for a client on a Friday and come back on Sunday evening or Monday morning, which produces a northbound leg and a southbound one in the same week;

– The cargo base. East Midlands is one of the busiest freight airports in Britain, and business aircraft that overnight there are often repositioned in the morning.

East Midlands is a regional base and not a hub on the scale of London, so a client who offers a three-day window is far likelier to find a leg than one who needs a given Friday. The operator, not the passenger, fixes the hour, and a leg can disappear if the booking behind it changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Midlands or Yorkshire leg the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In Sheffield a helicopter is not a luxury added to the trip but the answer to the hour on the road. From East Midlands to the city is 35 nautical miles in a straight line, about 25 minutes by helicopter against about an hour by car. The same machine covers the Peaks in minutes: Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Castleton lie within about a quarter of an hour of the city. Where it can land is the question, so the landing site is agreed with the owner before we quote.

East Midlands to Sheffield
35 nautical miles north, the hour of road reduced to a short flight
about 25 minutes
Leeds Bradford to Sheffield
31 nautical miles south, for a party arriving from the north
about 20 minutes
Manchester to Sheffield
30 nautical miles across the Peak District, in place of the Snake Pass
about 20 minutes
Sheffield to Chatsworth
11 nautical miles south-west to the house, the garden and the parkland, with the landing site agreed in advance
about 15 minutes
East Midlands to Chatsworth
27 nautical miles, for a party that never needs to go into Sheffield
about 20 minutes
Sheffield to Castleton
12 nautical miles west to the Hope Valley, Peveril Castle and the caves
about 15 minutes
Sheffield to Haddon Hall
14 nautical miles south-west to the Wye valley near Bakewell
about 15 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– Sites are not interchangeable. A venue, a hotel garden or an estate needs a suitable landing site and the owner's agreement, and we settle that before quoting and not after;

– The Pennines set the day. Low cloud over the Peak District can stop a helicopter on a morning when the jet lands without trouble, so every trip has a road alternative in the same plan, and a transfer from Manchester across the hills is the first to be affected;

– For a snooker final or a festival weekend, book the helicopter together with the jet. Landing sites and crews are thin on the busiest days and are the first thing to run out.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for single-engine transfers, the H130 for scenic work, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable. Times above are straight-line figures at a typical cruise of about 130 knots, with a few minutes added for start-up and landing, and they are estimates and not operator quotes.

Sheffield charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

DAY TRIP · OUT AND BACK

A morning meeting in Sheffield and home for dinner

London Luton - East Midlands and return, Citation CJ3+, about 30 min each way · 4 pax

Out of Luton at half past seven, on the ground in the East Midlands at about eight and in the Sheffield meeting by half past nine, after an hour on the M1. The crew stayed with the aircraft at the handler and the car waited. The return left in the late afternoon, which kept the day inside a single charter and well clear of the night noise rules.

SNOOKER · THE FINAL WEEKEND

Six guests for the closing sessions at the Crucible

Farnborough - East Midlands, Citation CJ3+, about 35 min · 6 pax

The tickets and the hotel rooms were fixed weeks ahead, because the auditorium holds only 980. The aircraft was the simple part. A helicopter from the apron to a landing site near the city saved the party the hour on the road on the Saturday, and a driver covered the Sunday.

FESTIVAL · THE SHORT NOTICE

Five people for a Tramlines Saturday

Biggin Hill - East Midlands, Pilatus PC-12, about 45 min · 5 pax

The booking came in nine days before the festival weekend. The turboprop carried five people and a light hold for the minimum charge, a good deal below a jet, and a driver met them at the handler. The aircraft went home empty on the Sunday and appeared on the empty legs list that evening.

HERITAGE · CHATSWORTH AND THE PEAKS

A lunch at Chatsworth for a visiting delegation

East Midlands to Chatsworth, helicopter, about 20 min · 4 pax

The delegation arrived from abroad into East Midlands, cleared customs at the handler and transferred by helicopter to a landing site agreed with the estate. A road alternative stayed in the plan for the low cloud that the Peaks produce, and was not needed. The group never went near Sheffield.

INBOUND · FROM AMSTERDAM WITH A DOG

An Amsterdam arrival into East Midlands

Amsterdam - East Midlands, Citation CJ3+, about 55 min · 3 pax + dog

The General Aviation Report was filed days ahead, the handler arranged customs, and a vet in the Netherlands gave the dog its tapeworm treatment inside the 24 to 120 hour window before landing. The party never went near the main terminal and was in Sheffield within the hour.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING SOUTH

A jet already going your way

East Midlands - London Luton, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 30 min · 3 pax

The jet had flown a weekend party up from London and was returning without passengers. The client offered a three-day window rather than one date, which is what makes these legs work, and paid far less than a new one-way charter would have cost.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Sheffield

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Sheffield?

About 30 minutes from Luton and about 35 minutes from London City in a light jet, covering 70 to 107 nautical miles, with Biggin Hill at about 35 minutes. The aircraft lands at East Midlands, because Sheffield has no airport, and the drive from there to the centre takes about an hour. The fastest train from St Pancras takes 1 hour 58 minutes.

2How much does a private jet to Sheffield cost?

From £3,100 one way in a Pilatus PC-12 from Newcastle, Belfast or the London fields on request, and from £5,300 in a Citation CJ3+ from the London airfields, Southampton, Bristol or Cardiff, because a short sector is billed at a minimum charge. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen by turboprop run from £3,150, £3,250 and £3,850. The closing days of the snooker championship and the Tramlines weekend can price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Sheffield?

East Midlands (EMA / EGNX) for most trips: a 2,893 m runway, two handlers listing round-the-clock opening, customs on site, and about an hour by the M1 to the centre. Leeds Bradford (EGNM) is about 1 hour 10 minutes away and Manchester (EGCC) about 1 hour 20 minutes, the better start for long haul. Netherthorpe and Retford Gamston are small fields for light aircraft, and Humberside is about 43 nautical miles away.

4Is Doncaster Sheffield Airport open for private jets?

No. Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly Robin Hood Airport, about 18 miles east of Sheffield, is closed to traffic, no passenger or charter flights operate there, and a private jet cannot be booked into it. Public bodies are working towards a reopening, first for freight and later for passengers, but there is no date a charter could be planned around. Private jets for Sheffield use East Midlands, Leeds Bradford or Manchester.

5Do I need a passport or customs clearance to fly to Sheffield?

Not from elsewhere in the United Kingdom. A flight from anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland is domestic, with no passport control, no customs and no General Aviation Report. Handlers still ask for names, and we advise carrying photo identification. An arrival from abroad lands at East Midlands, Leeds Bradford or Manchester, with a report filed between 48 and 2 hours before departure and customs arranged through the handler.

6Can I take my dog to Sheffield on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Within Great Britain no import paperwork is needed. From abroad a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival, a pet travel document and a declaration, and no more than five animals may travel with one person. Going from Sheffield to the EU needs an Animal Health Certificate for each trip.
