Private jet charter in Avoriaz

Anyone who leaves London for Avoriaz by private jet lands in a valley, not in the resort, because there is no airport at Avoriaz and the village at 1,800 m does not let cars in either. Private Jets UK builds every Avoriaz charter as a short chain: a jet to Geneva or to another valley airport, then a car or a helicopter, then a gondola or a sleigh for the last stretch. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. What the French register does list above the village is a snow landing strip, 245 m by 25 m at about 1,740 m, used in winter by small aircraft and microlights with mountain-qualified pilots, and it is not a place where a charter from Britain arrives. The decisions that matter are the gateway airport, the way up from the valley, and the weekend.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Avoriaz depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Avoriaz?

About an hour and twenty minutes from Biggin Hill or London City to Geneva in a light jet, then roughly an hour and a half on the road or a helicopter hop of around twenty-five minutes, with one hour of clock difference to allow for, because Switzerland and France both keep Central European time. The British fields we use lie 404 to 728 nautical miles from Geneva, which makes the jet leg a short sector from the south of England and a longer one from Scotland. The table gives the jet leg from each field to Geneva, the airport most Avoriaz parties use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Geneva around half past nine local time. The business aviation terminal is separate from the airline hall, which keeps the formalities short. From there the helicopter reaches the mountain in about 25 minutes by our estimate, while the road takes about an hour and a half in good conditions and two hours or more on a changeover Saturday. Central London to the snow therefore comes to roughly five hours, against most of a day on a scheduled flight and a coach. In a car the final approach ends at the edge of the resort, because Avoriaz is closed to traffic: you park, take a trolley to the Welcome Centre and your bags go up by sleigh or lift.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people, take a light jet. An hour and twenty minutes in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is no hardship, and the money saved over a midsize cabin buys the helicopter seats or the lift passes for the week;

– Past four, or for a party with skis, boots and snowboards, we quote a midsize alongside and show both figures. The hold fills before the seats do, and since the luggage has to travel from the Welcome Centre by trolley and sleigh anyway, fewer, softer bags make the last hundred metres easier;

– A heavy jet earns its place for a chalet party that flies as one group or carries on from Geneva to another country. It does not shorten the road, and the Geneva runway of 3,900 m takes anything we would put on it.

Geneva is not the only door. From Biggin Hill the same light jet reaches each of the five gateways below within a few hundred pounds of the others, so the choice is made by the last stretch, the hour of arrival and the pet or permit paperwork, not by the flight price.

Private jet flights from Avoriaz

Nobody takes off from Avoriaz in a jet, so the way home is the arrival in reverse: down to the valley by car or helicopter and out from the airport you chose. Most parties fly back to Britain, but a ski week is often a bridge to somewhere else, and Geneva has the runway and the handlers for any onward sector. Why the return is planned from the valley

The only runway above the village is a winter snow strip of 245 m by 25 m that the French register lists for small aircraft and microlights, and fixed-wing pilots need a mountain qualification to use it. A client with a Pilatus PC-12 or a King Air is therefore never offered Avoriaz as a point of departure: the aircraft waits at Geneva, Annecy or Sion, and the party comes down by helicopter or car. Sion lies only 25 nautical miles from the resort in a straight line, Geneva 28, and a helicopter covers either in 20 to 25 minutes by our estimate. On the day itself the road decides: on a Saturday the descent through Morzine can take twice as long as on a Tuesday, and the departure time for the airport is counted back from the take-off slot, not from breakfast.

Before you accept an Avoriaz onward quote

– Which airport the quote starts from. A price that names Avoriaz as the departure point for a fixed-wing aircraft was written without checking, and it will change by the time the aircraft is pinned to a real field;

– Whether the legs are one booking. A week in Portes du Soleil followed by a weekend in Paris or on the coast costs noticeably less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning twice, and the empty-leg market works in the same direction.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Avoriaz:

Light jets, the usual choice for a ski weekend

Eighty minutes from the south of England makes this the sensible class for four or five people with ordinary luggage. Geneva has a 3,900 m runway and none of these needs more than a fraction of it, so the saving is better spent on the helicopter or the chalet.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for skis, boards and boot bags

A week on the snow fills a hold faster than it fills seats. Six pairs of skis and boots, plus the bags that follow by road, are the usual reason a party of five moves up a class.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a chalet party that travels as one group, a family with staff, or a trip that continues from the Alps to Paris or the Mediterranean. These cabins are Geneva aircraft: a runway of that length and the business terminal there take them without any question about limits.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The Pilatus PC-12 and the King Air 350 suit the shorter fields on this corridor, Annecy and Sion, and cost much less per hour than any jet. They are valley aircraft here: neither is quoted for the snow strip above the village.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

The usual last stretch for those who do not want the road: from Geneva, Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon to a landing site agreed in advance in the Morzine valley or at the resort. The machine depends on the party and on the day.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. In the ski season many aircraft are based in Geneva, the Alpine valleys or on the Riviera, so there is usually a jet within an hour of the Haute-Savoie, and a quote may name Lyon or Nice as the positioning point. For a resort served entirely from outside that is normal, and it is often where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports for Avoriaz

Avoriaz has no airport, and the order in which to think about the options is the reverse of the map: start with the five valley airports and treat the snow strip above the village as a curiosity. Which gateway is right depends on the aircraft, the day of the week, the pet paperwork and how much of the border you want to cross.

Airport What it gives you
Geneva International
GVA / LSGG
The main gateway and the one most parties use. A single concrete runway of 3,900 m, a Business Aviation Terminal at the south-west end of the field with private immigration and customs, and Jet Aviation's FBO open every day from 06:00 to 22:00 with three executive lounges. Geneva asks for prior permission for every general and business aviation movement, requested through the handling agent. The road to Avoriaz is roughly 80 to 94 km depending on the source, an hour and a half in good conditions, and the helicopter takes around 25 minutes. Winter weekends are the pinch point, when slots and ramp space typically tighten, and the week of the Davos forum in January adds to it
Annecy-Haute-Savoie-Mont Blanc, Meythet
NCY / LFLP
The small field on the French side, with one paved runway of 1,630 m by 30 m and no instrument landing system listed in the aerodrome entry. Handling is compulsory for aircraft of 3 tonnes or more, customs and police need a day's notice through the operator, and international flights are accepted from 08:00 to 20:00 local time under conditions. The tower is published from 08:00 to 18:00 UTC, which is 09:00 to 19:00 local time, and on winter Saturdays, Sundays and some Fridays a facilitated schedule applies with an authorisation number in the flight plan. The road is about 95 to 98 km and around an hour and forty minutes. Right for a light or midsize jet that lands before the evening, and the airport that keeps the whole trip inside France
Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc
CMF / LFLB
Runway 18/36 of 2,020 m by 45 m, a business aviation terminal operated by the airport group, and customs by 24 hours' notice sent through the handler. Far from Avoriaz by road, about 137 to 145 km and 1 h 45 to 2 h, but the helicopter covers it in around 35 minutes. Worth knowing when a trip combines Avoriaz with Courchevel or Méribel, and a fallback when Annecy and Geneva are both full on a Saturday
Lyon Saint-Exupéry
LYS / LFLL
Runways of 4,000 m and 2,670 m, customs and immigration open day and night with no special notice, fuel round the clock and handling through the airport group's executive handling company. About 212 km from Avoriaz and 2 h 45 to 3 h by road, so it suits the late arrival, the very large cabin, or a party that wants to stay in France and skip the Swiss border on peak weeks. Lyon-Bron, on the edge of the city, takes smaller aircraft on a 1,820 m runway, with notice for customs on flights from outside Schengen
Sion
SIR / LSGS
A Swiss airport in the Valais with a runway of 2,000 m by 40 m, shared with the Swiss Air Force and requiring an airport-specific crew qualification for instrument approaches. It is the nearest airport to Avoriaz as the crow flies, about 25 nautical miles, but the Rhône valley and the border mountains lie between, so it makes sense as a helicopter transfer of around 20 minutes, or for a trip that splits time with the Swiss side of Portes du Soleil, Verbier or Crans-Montana. By road it is a long way round

Four points settle most Avoriaz arrivals:

Choose the gateway

Geneva for most parties, for large aircraft and for a late arrival. Annecy for a light jet that wants to stay inside France and lands before six. Lyon when the cabin is large and the hour is late. Chambéry when Courchevel is on the same trip, and Sion only with a helicopter booked. The flight costs about the same to each; the last stretch is what differs.

Hours, slots and daylight

Geneva needs prior permission for every general aviation movement and gets crowded on winter weekends. Annecy has a tower that is shut in the evening, and its instrument approaches stop with it. Helicopters over the mountains fly in daylight and in useful visibility, so a late arrival at any airport usually ends in a car.

Border and passport

Britain is outside Schengen, France and Switzerland are inside it. You clear passport control at the first airport you land at, and the road from Geneva to Avoriaz crosses the Swiss-French border without systematic checks, though identity documents must be carried. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure.

Car and winter tyres

Between 1 November and 31 March a car on the Avoriaz road needs either four tyres marked 3PMSF, or snow chains or textile socks carried to fit the driven wheels when the B26 signs are lit in heavy snow. We give the driver the terminal as well as the flight, and the car stops at the edge of the resort, not in it.

Border, passport and permits for an Avoriaz flight

Both countries a charter can use are in Schengen, which means one passport check at the first landing and, for Britain, a General Aviation Report on the way back. At Geneva the check is done in the Swiss business terminal, after which the road crosses into France. Geneva also has a French sector, a pier of the airline terminal that exists under an agreement between France and the Canton of Geneva and is reached by road through the customs gate at Ferney-Voltaire. It serves airline passengers going between Geneva and France and does not help a London charter: a traveller arriving on an international flight cannot leave directly for France without passing through Switzerland first. At Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon the border service is in the airport itself, with notice given by the operator. A first-time visitor to the Schengen area may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints, a free step whose record stays valid for three years. For the way home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and passengers who are neither British nor Irish citizens may need an electronic travel authorisation for the UK.

The landing permit depends on the airport. A British operator running a charter into Switzerland needs a Swiss permit: individual permits for up to three flights in three months are requested at least 72 hours before the first flight, and a chain of four or more flights needs an operating permit filed at least 30 days ahead. For France, the air services agreement between Britain and the European Union gives each side third and fourth freedom rights, so a plain London to Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon flight and back runs on the operator's usual authorisations. The permit question appears when the routing carries passengers between two French points or collects passengers in France for a third country. France then runs a non-objection procedure for operators without an EU licence, with a request filed through its SAGA system at least two working days ahead. The operator files it and we track it.

From the apron to the pistes

Avoriaz sits at 1,800 m above the Morzine valley, a purpose-built resort of wood-clad blocks that forbids cars inside. It is one of twelve resorts of the Portes du Soleil, the French-Swiss ski area that the resort describes as more than 600 km of marked pistes with some 209 lifts. Getting there means choosing between two entrances. The Prodains Express gondola climbs from the valley floor above Morzine to the lower village in under five minutes, and the Welcome Centre at the end of the Avoriaz road takes cars, with luggage trolleys and covered parking. After that everything moves on foot, by sleigh or on skis.

Geneva airport to Avoriaz by road

about 1 h 30
Geneva airport to Avoriaz by helicopter

about 25 min

1 h 45 to 2 h
Lyon Saint-Exupéry to Avoriaz by road
about 212 km, the route that avoids the Swiss border on peak weeks
2 h 45 to 3 h
Sion to Morzine by road

the gondola that takes guests and luggage into the resort
under 5 minutes
Snow taxi inside the resort
horse-drawn sleighs run in the daytime, snowcats take over after dinner
08:00 to 20:00, then snowcat

The practical details are simple but unforgiving. The gondola runs later at the weekend, until midnight on Friday and Saturday, until 22:00 on Sunday and until 21:00 from Monday to Thursday, so an evening arrival from Geneva on a weekday needs the road to the Welcome Centre and not the lift. The Welcome Centre is open round the clock. The sleighs charge a small supplement for luggage. We give the chalet or hotel the real arrival time, because in a car-free resort the person who carries the bags is part of the booking.

Flying to Avoriaz with a dog or a cat

Travelling to Avoriaz with a pet is an ordinary booking, and the flight is the easy part: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold. The paperwork is where the trip is won or lost, because the choice of airport also chooses the rulebook. Land at Geneva and Switzerland checks the animal first, with a further French check possible on the road; land at Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon and only the French check applies.

private flight with animals

What France, as an EU country, asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What Switzerland asks for when a pet lands at Geneva: a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and either a valid Swiss or EU pet passport or an official veterinary certificate issued in the country of departure. There is a mandatory pet check at the red customs exit, and an animal with missing documents can be refused. The Swiss veterinary office names Basel, Geneva and Zurich as the entry points for animals flown in, so Geneva is the right Swiss airport for a pet.

What catches owners out on the Avoriaz run

– Two borders in one morning. A British dog that lands at Geneva has cleared Switzerland and then drives into France. How the French side treats an animal that has already entered Switzerland is something we settle with the authorities for your dates, and we plan on the stricter reading, with a certificate that is valid on both sides. If the trip allows it, Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon keep the whole journey under one set of rules;

– The tapeworm window. France does not ask for it on the way in, only Britain asks on the way home, so it is a vet appointment booked in the valley towards the end of the week. Count back from the departure time, because a flight that moves by a day can push the 24 to 120 hours out of reach;

– The helicopter and the resort. A rotary operator agrees to carry an animal separately from the jet, and the apartment or hotel must accept it. A dog in a gondola cabin is a question for the lift company too, so we ask before the quote.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and a quarantine of up to four months awaits an animal that arrives in Britain without meeting the rules.

The Avoriaz calendar: a ski winter and a bike summer

Avoriaz works in two seasons, and both are real. The lifts run from mid-December to mid or late April, and the bike park takes over from mid-June to mid-September. The weeks between are quiet. What week you pick matters more than what jet you pick, because the weeks decide the price of the aircraft, the helicopter and the chalet.

The lifts of the Avoriaz sector and the wider Portes du Soleil usually open in the second week of the month, and the first fortnight before the school holidays is calm and good value. Transfers are easy and aircraft are not hard to find
Christmas and New Year
The busiest fortnight of the winter. Families fill the apartments, Geneva is crowded with other business aircraft, and a helicopter is the first item to sell out. Five to eight weeks ahead is the sensible lead time, not a cautious one
January
Usually deep snow and fewer people, a favourite month for skiers who want empty slopes. The World Economic Forum in Davos, usually held in January, presses the Geneva ramp, so a booking in that week is better routed through Annecy or Lyon
February
School holidays in the British and French calendars, and the carnival parade in the village. Saturday is the changeover day for every apartment and chalet, and the road through Morzine is the bottleneck on which transfers double
March
Longer days, strong sun and the best value of the winter. Rock the Pistes, a pop and rock festival on the slopes of Portes du Soleil, takes place in the middle of the month for about a week, with concerts on temporary stages that can be reached only on skis and after-ski gigs in Morzine, Montriond, Châtel and Morgins. Entry is free but you need a lift pass
April
The lifts close around the third week of the month, and operators start bringing their aircraft back from the Alps, which is when the empty legs away from the mountains multiply
Late June
The bike park reaches full opening and the Pass'Portes du Soleil MTB gathers riders at the end of the month for a loop of about 80 km with some 6,000 m of descent and 1,000 m of climbing, ridden on one day chosen from a Friday, Saturday or Sunday
July
The Les Gets round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is listed for the first week of July, with cross-country, short-track and downhill races, free to watch. Avoriaz has close to twenty downhill trails of its own, from green to black. Walkers climb to the Cascade des Brochaux waterfall above Les Lindarets, an hour and a half on foot from the resort
August and early September
The bike park stays open until the middle of September, with partial opening at both ends of the season. Demand for aircraft is modest and easy to meet outside the French holiday weeks
Late September to early December
The lifts and the park are closed, and the resort is largely shut. We check hotels, restaurants and helicopter operators before planning any flight to Avoriaz at this time of year

Why a holiday week costs more

The flying is not the reason. The light and midsize fleet in Europe is large and Geneva is well placed in it. What tightens in a school-holiday week is the helicopter capacity above the valley, the ramp space at Geneva and the supply of good cars on the road, and all three peak on the same Saturday. A booking made two weeks before Christmas can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Lyon or Nice and a helicopter at an awkward hour. The same booking made five to eight weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the school holidays Avoriaz is an easy destination, and a charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Avoriaz price down

  • Move the dates away from the school holidays where you can. Early December, January and March are the quiet weeks of a long season;
  • Avoid Saturday. An arrival on Sunday or a weekday spares the changeover traffic on the road to the Welcome Centre, and the aircraft and the helicopter are easier to find;
  • Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise. Four people with ordinary bags do not need a midsize, and on this sector the difference between a CJ3+ and an XLS+ from Biggin Hill is about £1,600 each way;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits at Geneva, Lyon or on the coast needs less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful share of the bill.

Types of flights

Avoriaz produces a mix of its own, because the resort is two destinations in one. In winter almost everyone goes to the snow at the same time, and in summer a different crowd arrives for bikes and walking.

  • Family ski weeks, with children, ski bags and an apartment booked for the Saturday changeover;
  • Chalet parties for Christmas and New Year, often travelling as one group and sometimes with their own cook;
  • Long weekends in the middle of the season, with a Friday departure and a Sunday evening return;
  • Trips that cross the border: a week split between Avoriaz and the Swiss resorts of the same ski pass, such as Champéry, Morgins or Les Crosets, with a Sion or Geneva arrival;
  • Mountain-bike weekends in June and July, some of them built around the Les Gets World Cup or the Pass'Portes du Soleil, with bikes in the hold;
  • Festival travel in March for Rock the Pistes, often with a small group and a fixed date.

The weekend is the trip to look at closely. Leave London on a Friday morning and you are in the resort by lunch with an afternoon on the snow; return on Sunday evening and the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home. That waiting is paid for, but it can still come out cheaper than two separate one-way charters, and we quote it both ways so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. The Haute-Savoie runs on a strong weekly rhythm, so empty legs come in predictable waves, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Avoriaz empty legs come from

– The Saturday changeover. Aircraft bring one party out on the Saturday and fly home empty, or come out empty to collect the next, so the Saturday and Sunday sectors between Geneva and Britain are the ones most often offered;

– The Davos week. Business jets sent to Switzerland for the forum are repositioned when it ends, and a number of the legs pass through Geneva;

– The end of the season. In April operators bring their winter aircraft back from the Alps, and those legs are often priced low. In summer the pattern is much thinner, and a bike weekend is rarely served by one.

Because the corridor from the Alps to Britain is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular Saturday. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag an Avoriaz match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

For most parties the helicopter is a choice, not a necessity, because the road from Geneva is under two hours on an ordinary day. It becomes the right answer on changeover Saturdays, in a snowfall that slows the Morzine road, and for anyone who would rather not add a mountain road to a morning of flying. The aircraft puts the party down at an agreed site in the valley or at the resort, and the transfer takes about 25 minutes from Geneva in place of the drive. A scenic operator departs from the Avoriaz snow strip in winter, and a transfer operator in Morzine lists airport-to-resort flights from Geneva, Lyon, Chambéry and Annecy to its helipad in the valley.

Geneva to Avoriaz
28 nm in a straight line, the usual transfer from the main gateway
about 25 minutes
Annecy to Avoriaz
33 nm in a straight line, the shortest hop from the French side
about 25 minutes
Sion to Avoriaz
25 nm across the Rhône valley and the border ridge, with Swiss and French formalities to arrange
about 20 minutes
Chambéry to Avoriaz
52 nm in a straight line, a hop that saves more than an hour on the road
about 35 minutes
Lyon Saint-Exupéry to Avoriaz
78 nm in a straight line, the flight that saves almost two hours on the motorway
about 50 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– Leisure drop-offs are banned in France. The mountain law prohibits putting skiers or riders down on the mountain by helicopter or small aeroplane, for the descent and the pick-up alike, and the ban is aimed at flights whose purpose is the slope. An airport-to-resort transfer is a different job, and we confirm with the operator, in writing, which landing site is used and under which authorisation;

– Weather sets the schedule. Low cloud or fog in the Morzine valley can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands at Geneva without trouble, and landing sites in the mountains are used by daylight. Every transfer carries a road alternative in the same booking;

– Capacity is limited in the school holidays, and landing away from an agreed site needs the owner's consent. A chalet terrace is a question we ask before the quote is written, not after it.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for four or five passengers, the wider H130 for groups, and the H135 and Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Avoriaz charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in general terms and not as dated or named bookings.

SATURDAY CHANGEOVER · A CAR AND A SLEIGH

Two families and a boot bag each

Farnborough - Geneva, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 15 min · 7 pax

The jet was timed to the apartment changeover and not to breakfast. The car waited at the business terminal, stopped at the Welcome Centre, and a trolley and a sleigh took the bags to the door. Skis went in the hold, and the children slept through the Morzine road.

MIDWEEK · THE HELICOPTER SKIPPED THE QUEUE

Four friends on a Tuesday in January

London City - Geneva, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 20 min · 4 pax

Nobody wanted the road after an early start, and a Tuesday has room for a helicopter. The party left the business terminal after the formalities and reached the valley site in about twenty-five minutes, with the transfer to the village and the lift passes waiting. Home on Sunday by car and jet.

A LATE ARRIVAL · THE GONDOLA HAD STOPPED

Landing after nine on a weekday

London Luton - Geneva, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 20 min · 5 pax

The Prodains Express stops early in the middle of the week, so the booking was a car all the way to the Welcome Centre and a snowcat to the chalet after the sleighs had gone. The driver and the chalet host had the arrival time in writing, which is the whole point.

JULY · BIKES IN THE HOLD

A World Cup weekend with six bikes

Bristol - Geneva, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 30 min · 5 pax

Bikes and boxes dictate the aircraft, not the passenger count. The midsize cabin took the cases, the transfer was a van with a trailer to Les Gets, and the party moved to Avoriaz for the rest of the week, where the bike park was already running its full programme.

A DOG ON BOARD · SKI WEEKEND

Two adults and a spaniel

Manchester - Annecy, Citation Latitude, about 1 h 40 min · 2 pax + dog

The aircraft went to Annecy so the whole journey stayed under French rules. The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet in the valley was booked for the tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. The apartment accepted the dog, and the gondola was asked in advance.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING NORTH

A jet already going home

Geneva - Biggin Hill, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 1 h 20 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a group out for the week and was returning empty. The client gave a three-day window instead of one date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the south of England.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Avoriaz

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Avoriaz?

About 1 hour 20 minutes from London City and Biggin Hill in a light jet to Geneva, and around 1 hour 20 minutes from Luton in a Phenom, covering roughly 404 to 423 nautical miles. From Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester allow about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours. The road from Geneva to Avoriaz adds about an hour and a half, or a helicopter about 25 minutes, and France and Switzerland are one hour ahead of Britain.

2How much does a private jet to Avoriaz cost?

The jet leg starts from about £6,400 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, and £6,500 from London City. A Phenom from Farnborough or Luton runs £6,700 to £6,900, a midsize cabin costs £8,300 to £9,150 from the south and Midlands, and from Scotland allow £15,400 to £15,750. The road or helicopter leg is quoted with the jet. Christmas week, New Year and the February school holidays price above these figures.

3Is there an airport in Avoriaz, and can a private jet land there?

No. Avoriaz has no airport and the village is closed to cars. The French register lists a winter snow strip of 245 m by 25 m at about 1,740 m, open to small aircraft and microlights whose pilots hold a mountain qualification, and it is not a charter destination. A jet flies to Geneva, Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon, and the journey is finished by road or by helicopter to an agreed site in the valley.

4Which airport is best for Avoriaz: Geneva, Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon?

Geneva (GVA / LSGG) for most trips: 3,900 m runway, a business aviation terminal, Jet Aviation's FBO from 06:00 to 22:00, and a road of roughly 80 to 94 km, about an hour and a half. Annecy (NCY / LFLP) for a light jet that wants to stay in France, with a 1,630 m runway and a tower that is shut in the evening. Lyon Saint-Exupéry for a late arrival, with customs open day and night, about 212 km away. Chambéry suits a trip that includes Courchevel, and Sion is a helicopter-only option on the Swiss side.

5Do I need a visa, a landing permit or customs clearance for Avoriaz?

Britain is outside Schengen and France and Switzerland are inside it, so you clear passport control and customs at the first airport. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport under ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure, and a first-time visitor may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints. A British operator needs a Swiss permit for Geneva or Sion, while a plain point-to-point charter to Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon is covered by the air services agreement. The operator and our team handle the paperwork.

6Can I take my dog to Avoriaz on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. France asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry; a British pet passport cannot be used. Landing at Geneva adds the Swiss check, with a pet inspection at customs. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival, and cats are exempt. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork in writing before the flight.
