Private jet charter in Chios

Close to four hours in a light jet puts a London passenger on the eastern edge of the Aegean, a ferry ride from the Turkish coast, yet on this island the runway decides the charter long before the aircraft does. Private Jets UK plans every Chios trip around that fact. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Chios Omiros has a single asphalt runway of 1,511 m, only VOR/DME and NDB approaches in the directories we checked, a compulsory handler and, in summer, slot coordination, so the island suits a light jet or a small midsize one and little larger. Runway works can restrict the airport to turboprops or close it for a period, and then a jet cannot land on the island at all, which is why this page gives you a second way in beside the first.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Chios depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Chios?

About three hours and three-quarters from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, just under four from Manchester or Birmingham in a midsize one and about four from Edinburgh or Glasgow, with a two-hour clock change on arrival because Greece keeps Eastern European time. At 1,400 to 1,675 nautical miles from the British fields we use, Chios is among the longest sectors a light jet flies from Britain, and it is where we start to quote a midsize cabin beside the light one. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and you touch down at Chios a little before one o'clock local time, because the flight takes close to four hours in a light jet and Greece is two hours ahead of Britain. The airport is on the southern edge of the town at Kampos, so a car has you at a hotel in Chios Town within a quarter of an hour. Count on roughly five and a half hours from a London front door to the island. Airline passengers usually change at Athens, since the routes listed for the airport are domestic, and that is one of the reasons people charter.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people with ordinary luggage, a light jet is workable and it is the cheapest way to arrive. Nearly four hours in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is a long sit, and we say so when we quote;

– With six people, golf bags, a stack of beach gear and a couple of children, we quote a midsize jet beside the light one, so that you see both figures. A midsize cabin makes the longest sector of the trip a good deal easier;

– A super-midsize jet such as a Challenger 350 is described in directories as possible case by case, and heavier aircraft are generally not accommodated. On a 1,511 m runway with no ILS in the listings, the operator checks the performance figures for the day before it quotes anything larger than a midsize.

Prices for the private jet flights to Chios

Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Chios Omiros. Summer weeks sit above these figures because of slot coordination, and the handler's charges are quoted separately. When the airport is closed to jets, the same party flies into Izmir and crosses by road and ferry; the airports section prices that alternative.

Private jet flights from Chios

Chios sends little traffic of its own, and most of what leaves it is either a short hop across the water or a long business sector home. A British operator may not carry passengers between two Greek airports, so Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Thessaloniki are jobs for a Greek-licensed operator, a scheduled airline or a helicopter, and the table sticks to sectors that leave Greece. Onward from Chios: the Turkish coast is closer than the Greek mainland

Athens is 111 nautical miles from Chios, and the Anatolian shore is a good deal nearer than that. The ferry from Cesme to Chios Town covers about 13 km of water, which is why a party can reach the island from a Turkish airport in a morning. Bodrum Milas is 102 nautical miles away, about 35 minutes in a light jet, and Istanbul is 221 nautical miles, just under an hour. Within Greece the picture is different: because of the cabotage rule, Chios to Athens is a scheduled flight, a Greek charter or a helicopter, and a British jet takes the passengers out of Greece, not around it.

Before you accept an onward quote

– Which side of the border each leg sits on. A sector to Turkey leaves the Schengen area, so passports are checked at Chios on the way out and again in Turkey on arrival, and the operator needs the Turkish permits for the aircraft. We list both in the quote;

– Whether the legs are one booking. A trip that lands at Izmir, crosses to Chios by ferry and leaves from Chios later in the week costs noticeably less when it is arranged as one itinerary, because the crew and aircraft are positioned once.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h
Medium-sized jet (Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP)£3,000 - 3,700/h
Large medium-class jet (Challenger 300)£4,600 - 5,500/h
Large jet (Legacy 600)£4,900 - 5,800/h
Long-haul jet (Global 5000, G550, Falcon 7X)£5,800 - 8,800/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Chios:

Light jets, for up to four people

The runway of 1,511 m is comfortable for a light jet on a normal day, and at close to four hours this is a long light-jet sector. It works for a small party with modest luggage, and the saving over a midsize cabin is real.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, the comfortable choice

Five to eight people and a hold that fills quickly: island clothes, beach bags, a week of lunches that turn into dinners. A midsize cabin makes the four-hour sector easy, and the operator checks the runway performance for the day.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

Directories treat a Challenger 350 as possible case by case and larger aircraft as generally unsuitable for a runway of this length. We quote these into Izmir, where the runway is over 3,000 m, and finish the journey by ferry.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The only fixed-wing aircraft the airport may accept while runway works restrict it. For our clients a turboprop is a tool for the short hops on the Greek side, flown by a Greek-licensed operator.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: Athens to the island, or a transfer to a village in the south or a bay in the north. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote, never on the day.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Chios sits at the far end of the European business jet fleet and has almost no based aircraft, so for a booking in the summer an aircraft is often positioned from Athens, Izmir or Italy, and the quote may name one of those cities as the starting point. That is normal for an island airport, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in Chios

The island has one airport and it is a small one, so the useful question is what to do when it cannot take the aircraft. Izmir, across the water, is the answer when it cannot, and Athens is where the scheduled and Greek-operated flights begin.

Airport What it gives you
Chios Island National Airport "Omiros"
JKH / LGHI
The only airport on the island, at Kampos, about 3 km south of Chios Town and 15 ft above sea level. One asphalt runway, 01/19, 1,511 m by 30 m, with VOR/DME and NDB approaches listed and fire category 6. It is run by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, not by a concession company. Handling is compulsory, and the Greek general aviation guide lists Goldair, Skyserv and Swissport, with Universal Aviation also offering FBO services; the tower frequency is 122.7. The summer season is slot-coordinated. Works to extend the runway northwards to about 1,799 m can restrict the airport to turboprops, leave it on a shortened runway or close it for a period, so jets cannot count on it
Izmir Adnan Menderes
ADB / LTBJ
The jet-friendly gateway on the Turkish side, about 18 km from the centre of Izmir, with a longest runway of 3,240 m and a general aviation terminal where Bilen Air Services operates as an independent FBO; Universal Aviation lists 24-hour support, and Celebi, Havas and TGS are listed ground handlers. Only 50 nautical miles from Chios, and about 95 km from the port of Cesme, where the boats to Chios leave. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill the sector costs about £450 more than flying to Chios, and the ferry and the road transfers are added to that
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos
ATH / LGAV
Greece's main airport, about 20 km east of the city centre, with two parallel runways of 4,000 m and 3,800 m and a general aviation terminal run by Swissport Executive Aviation, listed as open at all hours, with customs and immigration on site. 111 nautical miles from Chios. Aegean Airlines and Sky Express list scheduled flights to Chios, and the Piraeus ferry takes about six to eight hours. Athens is the right first landing for an animal that has to arrive at an approved border inspection post

Four points settle most Chios arrivals:

Handling and slots

A handler is compulsory at Chios where one is available, and the Greek general aviation guide lists three. In summer Chios is a coordinated airport, with the usual slot period running from July to September, so a private flight asks for a slot through the handler, plus a General Declaration for each airport and Form 731 for the passengers on a non-commercial flight.

The customs question

Sources disagree. The Greek general aviation guide and a directory that reproduces the Greek aeronautical publication list Chios as an international port of entry, subject to operating hours, while a flight-support directory marks it as not an airport of entry. We do not guess: the handler confirms in writing whether customs and immigration are available for your date and hour. If they are not, the first landing is somewhere that has them, and the plan is built around that.

Border and passport

Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area and Britain is in neither. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints at the EU entry system, though the Greek authorities have said they will not take them from British travellers. By the Turkish route the check happens at the ferry port in Chios Town.

Hours, fuel and the last boat

We found no current published operating hours for Chios, and directories list no curfew, though an older Greek ministry timetable gave the airport daytime hours in local time, not round-the-clock service, so a late arrival is the first thing the handler is asked about. Jet fuel is listed by one directory and absent from another national fuel table, so the aircraft is planned to arrive with enough to leave until fuel is confirmed in writing. The sailings from Cesme run in daylight, from about eight in the morning to the late afternoon, and in winter one listing shows a single morning boat, so the party lands in Izmir early and may sleep on the Turkish side.

business aviation

Landing permits, the Schengen border and the way home

A private flight into Greece does not usually need a separate landing permit. What it needs is the slot and the handler, and the operator has to be licensed to fly the route. Operators from outside the EU, which since Brexit includes British ones, need a permit from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority for charter flights, applied for at least five working days ahead. The rule that surprises clients is cabotage: a non-EU operator may fly UK to Greece and back, but may not carry passengers between two Greek airports. London to Athens to Chios on a single British charter is therefore not the plan, while London to Chios nonstop is allowed, and for a trip that needs both airports we propose a different structure. When a notice closes Chios to jets, the same logic leads to Izmir. We read the notices for your date before we quote, and say plainly when a trip cannot be flown as drawn.

For the flight home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and any passenger who needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the UK must hold it before boarding. British and Irish citizens are exempt. The same handler who arranged the arrival files the paperwork for the departure. Cash worth about £8,500 or more must be declared on entry to the EU.

From the apron to Chios Town

Chios is a large island, about 50 km from end to end, so the first decision is which part of it you want to sleep in. The town and the harbour are three kilometres from the runway, the mastic villages lie in the south and the shipowners' villages in the north. Distances worth knowing:

Airport to Chios Town
about 3 km, so the transfer is a short one; a local site gives about 7 minutes by taxi
typically 10 minutes
Agia Fotini and Glari beaches
the nearest swimming to the town, with sunbeds and tavernas; Agia Fotini is Blue Flag certified
9.5 to 12 km
Pyrgi, the painted village
one of the best-known mastic villages, with the Mastic Museum
about 25 km
Mesta, the best-preserved medieval village
houses joined into a fortified wall and the largest church on the island
about 35 km
Mavra Volia, black pebble beach
volcanic pebbles near Emporio, with a snack bar and parking
about 31 km
Giosonas and Lithi, in the north
a wild pebble cove near Nagos, and a fishing village with sand and shallow water
29 to 30 km
Cesme to Chios Town by ferry
the crossing is about 13 km; the boats take from about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the operator
30 to 60 minutes
Piraeus to Chios by ferry
a service with Blue Star on most days of the year; sailings run from about six to eight hours
6 to 8 hours

The mastic villages, Nea Moni and Kardamyla

Chios mastic, the resin of the mastic tree, comes from the south of the island, and the villages there are organised around it. The villages of the Mastichochoria were built as fortresses against pirates, with houses joined into an outer wall and a tower in the middle. Pyrgi is famous for the grey and white geometric patterns on its facades, known as xysta, and it has the Chios Mastic Museum, open daily except Tuesdays. Mesta is the best-preserved of the group, a maze of narrow lanes behind a wall formed by the houses themselves, and Olympoi dates from the 13th century. The know-how of cultivating mastic is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage, and the growers clear the ground around the trunks in mid-June and cut the bark from July.

Nea Moni, in the hills at the centre of the island, is an 11th-century monastery funded by the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main church is an octagon decorated with mosaics on a gold ground, and UNESCO groups it with Daphni and Hosios Loukas as monuments of the second golden age of Byzantine art. It came through the great earthquake of the 19th century largely intact, and it is the one stop that nearly every itinerary on the island includes.

The north is quieter. Kardamyla, on a bay in the north-eastern corner, and the small island of Oinousses a short boat ride off the coast are known as the home villages of Greek shipowners. On a clear day Lesbos shows on the horizon. Beyond Kardamyla the road runs on to Nagos and Giosonas, and in the north-west to Volissos, where Agia Markella has sunbeds and a taverna.

Flying to Chios with a dog or a cat

Greece asks for more paperwork than the flight takes time, and the flight is long enough for a dog to settle and sleep. The animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold. The detail that goes wrong is the date on the health certificate, which is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU, and the second detail is the point at which the animal is allowed to arrive.

private flight with animals

What Greece asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a designated point of entry. The official Greek tourism list of border inspection posts for private aircraft and yachts names Athens and Thessaloniki airports and, among the islands, Chios, with a note to confirm the position with the local authorities;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Chios run

– The point of entry. Chios appears on the Greek list of island entry points, but we still confirm in writing whether the animal may arrive at the airport on your date, and if not, the plan is a first landing at Athens and a Greek-operated flight or the ferry. The Turkish route has its own animal import rules on the Turkish side, which we check separately and which make it the harder choice for a pet;

– The vet at the end. Britain asks for the tapeworm treatment on the way home, so it is an appointment you book on Chios towards the end of the stay, and a flight that moves by a day can move the 24 to 120 hour window out of reach;

– Everything else that has to accept the dog. A hotel in the mastic villages, a boat, a beach taverna and a helicopter each set their own rules, and a helicopter operator will want the animal's weight counted in the payload. Settle all of them before the quote.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Chios calendar: quiet most of the year, busy at Easter and in summer

Chios has a long low season and a short high one. From November to March it is a working island with a limited timetable, and from late spring the ferries, the villages and the beaches fill up. Orthodox Easter and the weeks from July to September are the two periods when the date matters more than the aircraft.

November to March
The quiet season. Winter storms cross the Aegean, the Cesme ferries run a reduced service and the island is at its cheapest. Winters are mild, with January lows of about 7 degrees against summer highs of about 30, and runway works tend to be scheduled for these quiet months, so the Izmir route matters most here
Orthodox Easter
The week of the year on Chios. On the evening of Holy Saturday two rival parishes in Vrontados, Agios Markos and Panagia Erythiani, fire homemade rockets at each other's bell towers, a custom known as the rocket war, and spectators watch from the slopes of Mount Aepos. It falls in April or early May, depending on the Orthodox calendar, and rooms and slots go early
March to October
The Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi is open daily except Tuesdays, from 10:00 to 18:00, and the Cesme ferry season runs from April to October
June
The mastic growers clear and level the ground around the trunks in the middle of the month, ahead of the incisions. The meltemi, the northerly summer wind, begins to blow
July
The incisions are made from this month and the resin begins to flow. Summer slot coordination starts at the airport, with the usual period running from July to September, so a flight must have its slot in hand. Hot days, with northerly winds common
August
The peak of the year. Hot, with the meltemi common, and a public holiday on 15 August, when the Mastic Museum is closed. Book the slot and the ferry well ahead
September and October
Usually the best weeks for value, with a warm sea. The slot period ends at the end of September, and the museum moves to shorter winter hours from the middle of October. The Cesme season ends at the end of October

Why the airport, and not the aircraft, sets the date

Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Chios is reachable from every part of it. What gets tight is the slot, the handler and, on certain dates, the runway itself, because runway works can close or limit the airport in stages. A booking made a few weeks ahead for a date inside a works period cannot be flown into Chios whatever it costs, and the way in is then Izmir and the ferry. The same booking made for a summer week without works is a simple one-way or return charter, and winter dates outside a closure can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Chios price down

  • Move the dates out of July, August and September where you can. May, June and October fall outside the usual slot period, and aircraft are easier to find;
  • Compare the airports. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill, Izmir is priced about £450 higher than Chios, but it opens the choice to an aircraft of any size, and a ferry fare is a small number beside a charter;
  • Combine legs. A trip that visits the Turkish coast and Chios, or flies out of Chios later in the week on the same aircraft, costs less than two separate one-way flights because the crew and the aircraft are positioned once.

Types of flights

Chios produces a different mix from the cities we cover, because people go there for the villages and the sea, not for meetings. Almost everything is leisure, and a good deal of it is shaped by the runway notice.

  • Holiday weeks in Chios Town, the mastic villages or a house in the north, flown out on a Thursday or Friday and back a week later;
  • Easter trips for the rocket war in Vrontados and the processions in the villages, booked months ahead;
  • Combined itineraries with the Turkish coast, landing at Izmir, spending time around Cesme and crossing to Chios by ferry;
  • Visits to Nea Moni, Pyrgi and Mesta, usually as day excursions from a base in the town;
  • A trip to Kardamyla and Oinousses, in the north-east of the island, by road and by a short boat ride;
  • Connections through Athens, arriving from Britain on a jet and finishing the journey on a scheduled flight, a Greek charter or the ferry.

A same-day return does not work. The sector alone is close to four hours each way, so a short stay is planned as two one-way flights and quoted that way, and the figure you see is the one you pay.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Chios corridor the supply is thin, because the island has little business aviation of its own, and it helps to know where it comes from.

Where Chios empty legs come from

– Every drop-and-go. An aircraft that has brought a party to the island leaves empty, and the leg that follows to Athens, Izmir or Italy is the one most often offered;

– The start and the end of the season. In spring and in autumn operators move aircraft between Britain and the Aegean, and a one-way repositioning flight can appear on either side of a charter week;

– Events around the Turkish and Greek coasts. Aircraft that carry a party to Bodrum, Izmir or Mykonos in the summer are repositioned back north, and a leg that passes near Chios can be adapted to it when the runway permits.

Because the corridor is thin, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Chios match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

On Chios a helicopter competes with a car and a ferry for the same job, the last stretch between a runway and a village that has none. The routes that matter are Athens to Chios, a transfer from the airport or the harbour to the south or the north of the island, and a day to Mykonos. During a full closure the notice allows only helicopters on urgent missions to use the apron, so a private transfer then needs a different site that we agree before the quote.

Athens to Chios
111 nautical miles across the Aegean, against six to eight hours on the ferry from Piraeus
about 65 minutes
Chios to Mykonos
69 nautical miles to an island with its own slot rules
about 45 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a hotel, a villa or a pad before the quote is written, not after it;

– Weight and weather set the schedule. The payload for a private charter is commonly 400 to 500 kg including luggage, and the strong summer northerly wind can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road or boat alternative planned into the same day;

– Cross-border flights need their own permits. A helicopter that flies from Chios to the Turkish coast is a separate permit job, and we advise the ferry for that crossing.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for island and coastal work, the wider H130 for hotel and harbour transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Chios charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

SUMMER WEEK · THE SLOT FIRST

Four adults in a house in the mastic villages

Farnborough - Chios, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 30 min · 4 pax

The date was fixed by the family, so the slot request went in with the first message and the handler confirmed the hours and customs availability in writing. A car met the party at Kampos and drove them to a house near Pyrgi, and the aircraft flew on to park and came back for the pick-up.

EASTER · THE ROCKET WAR

Six friends for Holy Saturday

London Luton - Chios, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 40 min · 6 pax

Orthodox Easter fills every room on the island, so the flight and the hotel were fixed four months ahead. The party watched the rockets from the slopes above Vrontados, and the flight home left on the Monday, outside the busiest hours of the airport.

THE TURKISH ROUTE · A JET AND A BOAT

Five people when the runway was closed to jets

Farnborough - Izmir, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 35 min · 5 pax

The airport notice ruled out a jet landing at Chios, so the aircraft landed at Izmir in the morning, a car took the party to Cesme and a ferry crossed to Chios Town by mid-afternoon. The border check was done at the port in Chios, and the return was planned the same way, with a morning boat to make the flight home.

A MAY WEEK · A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a spaniel

Southampton - Chios, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 40 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and we asked in writing whether the dog could arrive at the airport or had to land at Athens first. The vet appointment for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. The hotel accepted the dog, and everything was settled in a single exchange of messages.

A SEPTEMBER WEEK · THE QUIET MONTH

A couple and friends, after the crowds

Biggin Hill - Chios, Citation CJ3+, about 3 h 45 min · 4 pax

They moved the dates from August to the first half of September and found aircraft easier to get, a calmer sea and a lower figure. The slot was still required, but the pressure was gone, and the villages and the beaches had space.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING WEST

A jet already going your way

Chios - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 3 h 30 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the week and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Chios

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Chios?

About 3 hours 45 minutes from London City and Biggin Hill in a light jet, and around 3 hours 30 minutes from Luton or Farnborough in a Phenom, covering roughly 1,400 to 1,427 nautical miles. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about 3 hours 50 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 4 hours. Greece is two hours ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands at about one o'clock local time.

2How much does a private jet to Chios cost?

From about £18,050 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, £18,100 from London City, and £18,300 to £18,350 in a Phenom from Luton or Farnborough. A midsize cabin runs £22,950 to £23,800 from the south and Midlands, and from Scotland allow £32,050 to £32,600. Summer weeks can price above these figures, and the handler's charges at the airport are quoted separately.

3Can a private jet land at Chios, and which airport should I use?

Chios Omiros (JKH / LGHI) has one asphalt runway of 1,511 m, handling is compulsory and the summer season is slot-coordinated, so it suits light and small midsize jets. Runway works can restrict the airport to turboprops or close it for a period, and then a jet cannot land. In that case we fly into Izmir (ADB / LTBJ), 50 nautical miles from Chios, and the party crosses from Cesme by ferry in 30 to 60 minutes. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill Izmir costs about £450 more than Chios.

4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Chios?

Britain is outside the EU and Schengen and Greece is inside both, so you clear passport control on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for three months beyond departure. Sources disagree on whether customs is staffed at the Chios airport at all hours, so the handler confirms it in writing for your date. A British operator needs a permit from the Greek civil aviation authority for charter flights and cannot carry passengers between two Greek airports. If you arrive by the Turkish route, the Greek border check is done at the ferry port in Chios Town.

5What is there to do on Chios, and can I see the mastic villages in a day?

Yes, the south can be seen in a day from Chios Town. Pyrgi, about 25 km away, is known for the grey and white patterned houses and has the Chios Mastic Museum, open daily except Tuesdays. Mesta, about 35 km away, is the best-preserved medieval village, and Olympoi dates from the 13th century. Nea Moni, an 11th-century UNESCO monastery with gold-ground mosaics, is in the hills at the centre of the island, and Kardamyla, the shipowners' village, is in the north-east. Mavra Volia, Agia Fotini and Lithi are among the beaches.

6Can I take my dog to Chios on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Greece asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. Chios appears on the Greek list of island entry points, but we confirm in writing whether the dog may arrive at the airport on your date, or must land at Athens first. A dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
