Private jet charter in Liberia

Liberia is closer to London than most people expect: a super-midsize jet leaves Biggin Hill and reaches Monrovia in about 6 hours 45 minutes without a stop. The sector is 2,867 nautical miles, which an Embraer Praetor 600 covers in one hop, while lighter jets break the journey in the Canaries. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Liberia that means the landing permit and parking slot, a named handler, and a car with a driver for the road from the airport.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Liberia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Roberts International Airport at Monrovia, nonstop, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Liberia?

Liberia keeps Greenwich Mean Time all year, so its clocks match Britain in winter and run one hour behind from spring to autumn, and the UTC hours in airport records are also local time. These are the sectors to Monrovia on a Praetor 600, gate to gate:

Biggin Hill to Monrovia
2,867 nautical miles, the basis for the price at the top of the page
about 6 h 45 min
Farnborough to Monrovia
2,856 nautical miles, the usual choice for Surrey and Hampshire
about 6 h 40 min
Manchester to Monrovia
2,971 nautical miles, the main departure for the north of England
about 6 h 55 min
Edinburgh to Monrovia
3,124 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, and the longest of the four
about 7 h 20 min

Why the aircraft decides the plan

The Praetor 600 and everything larger reach Monrovia from Britain in one hop. A Phenom 300E or a Citation XLS+ has a range of roughly 2,000 nautical miles, so it calls at Gran Canaria on the way, which typically adds about an hour.

From Biggin Hill a Phenom 300E through Gran Canaria takes about 8 h 05 min gate to gate, close to an hour more than the Praetor, and our model puts it near £36,700 against £45,700. We quote both.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– On the same Praetor 600, Manchester costs about £1,600 more than Biggin Hill for Monrovia, and Edinburgh about £3,900 more, because the sector is longer;

– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies home empty. For a stay the aircraft either waits at Roberts International, with parking and the crew's hotel as lines of their own, or returns to Britain and comes back for you. Permits, handling, fuel and airport charges are quoted separately.

Private jet flights within Liberia and to its neighbours

Liberia has no domestic charter market that we could price honestly. The national airport list names a handful of fields beyond Monrovia, among them Buchanan, Cape Palmas at Harper, Greenville and Voinjama. We found no verified runway data or services for those fields, so we quote none until a handler has confirmed a given strip for a given aircraft.

The sectors we can price are international. Freetown is only 230 nautical miles away, and Abidjan and Accra are the two big gateways along the coast:

Short hops from Monrovia

– Every row crosses a border, so each needs its own permit and handler, and the lead time does not shrink because the flight is short;

– Abidjan and Accra are also the natural alternates for Monrovia.

Business aviation airports in Liberia

For a private jet, Liberia means one airport, and it is not in the capital. The first row is the gateway, the second the city field clients ask about, and the last two are alternates in neighbouring countries:

Airport Ground How it operates
Roberts International
ROB / GLRB
at Harbel in Margibi County, about 56 to 60 km from Monrovia The gateway for business jets and the busiest airport in the country. One asphalt runway, 04/22, of 11,000 feet (about 3,350 metres), with ILS and NDB/DME approaches and firefighting category 8. Airport and tower are listed as open round the clock, with customs and airport of entry status. Jet fuel only, handling compulsory, no slots required
Spriggs Payne
MLW / GLMR
in the Sinkor district, about 5 km from downtown Monrovia The city's second airport. One asphalt runway, 05/23, of 6,000 feet (1,829 metres), used for domestic flights and United Nations operations, with immigration facilities listed. We use it only when a handler has confirmed it for the aircraft and the passengers
Abidjan Felix Houphouet-Boigny
ABJ / DIAP
in Ivory Coast, about 404 nautical miles to the east The nearest large alternate. One asphalt runway, 03/21, of 9,843 feet (3,000 metres), listed open round the clock with customs and airport of entry status. A separate country, so a diversion means a new entry
Accra Kotoka International
ACC / DGAA
in Ghana, about 634 nautical miles to the east The other alternate. One asphalt runway, 03/21, of 11,165 feet (3,403 metres), listed open round the clock with customs; slots and handling are both required

Roberts International began in the Second World War as a ferry stop for Pan American Airways. The passenger terminal was rebuilt after the civil war and has a business class lounge, and a separate VIP facility stands beside the old terminal. We found no FBO with its own lounge for general aviation passengers.

Handling is compulsory, and the airport record lists flight-support agents rather than a single operator: JetPlus Aviation Services, Mixjet Flight Support, Hadid International Services and Just Aviation, with Jetmate Aviation for fuel and In-Flight Platters Services as caterer. How your party is met, in the terminal, at the VIP building or at the aircraft, we confirm with the handler before the flight.

Customs is listed round the clock, while the airport-of-entry status for a private arrival is confirmed with the handler in writing for your date.

Four points settle most arrivals:

Permit: ask early

The Liberia Civil Aviation Authority issues the permits. Standard processing is listed as 72 hours, and operators who submit the authority's registration form can receive permits within 48 hours. Permit agents advise 48 to 72 hours.

Validity and parking

One handler guide lists a landing permit as valid for 24 hours and an overflight permit for 72 hours, with a parking slot required together with the landing permit. Overflight requests are handled in the authority's hours, listed as 08:00 to 17:00 UTC.

Papers for the permit

Aircraft certificates, insurance, the schedule and routing, crew passport copies and a local receiving party. A private aircraft does not normally need an air operator certificate; we confirm for your tail.

Crew and fuel

Crew visas are listed as issued on arrival, usually for up to 14 days. Jet A-1 is arranged through the handler.

Arriving from Britain: visa, passport and the Foreign Office advice

Liberia asks British passengers for a visa before departure, and that is the item to start on first.

Visa
British citizens need a visa. The Foreign Office points to the Liberian Embassy in London for applications, and an extension of up to 60 days can be requested in Monrovia for US$25
before departure
Passport
valid for the whole stay, with at least six months of validity when the visa is applied for
check the expiry
Yellow fever
proof of yellow fever vaccination is requested as part of the visa application
bring the certificate
Cash
cash or travellers' cheques of US$10,000 or more must be declared on arrival, and no more than US$7,500 in cash may be taken out of the country
declare on arrival

The Foreign Office entry page also notes heightened health screening of arrivals, which we check before departure.

The Foreign Office advice, as published

The safety pages we read describe crime as high, with foreigners sometimes targeted, mostly by opportunistic thieves. Foreigners have been mugged in the Mamba Point and Sinkor districts of Monrovia, and the advice is to avoid walking in the city after dark and to stay away from isolated places, beaches included. Small protests can begin with little warning, and terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out.

Roads outside the capital are described as treacherous, and many become impassable in the rainy season. Most visitors hire a car with a driver and travel in a convoy of at least two vehicles, and the road between Monrovia and Roberts International is named as under roadworks and possibly hazardous. Remote border areas of Grand Gedeh and River Gee counties, the Sinoe rubber plantation and Sapo National Park are named as places for particular care. The pages we read list no region where it advises against travel; we ask clients to read the full text.

Money, clearance and the way home

Liberia is largely a cash economy: cards are rarely accepted outside a few hotels and larger supermarkets, cash machines often run empty, and the Foreign Office suggests bringing enough US dollars.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Passengers with another passport should check their own entry rules.

Which part of Liberia, and how to get there from the airport

With one jet airport the question is not which field but how long the road is:

Monrovia
the capital stands on the Cape Mesurado peninsula. Mamba Point is the traditional diplomatic quarter, and Providence Island at the river mouth is where the first settlers landed
by road from the airport, with roadworks on the way
Harbel and Libassa
the town beside the airport is home to the Firestone rubber plantation, and Libassa Ecolodge lies near the airport
minutes from the apron
Kpatawee Waterfalls
in Bong County, about three hours from Monrovia with the last kilometres on dirt, and Gbarnga about half an hour beyond
a day trip or an overnight
Robertsport
a fishing town in Grand Cape Mount County known for its surf, with Lake Piso beside the road, three to five hours by a road whose last stretch is dirt
planned as a stay of several nights
Sapo National Park
a journey of over 11 hours from Monrovia, in an area where the Foreign Office asks for particular care
expedition planning, not a day trip

Most people who charter to Liberia are there for work: mining and agricultural companies, contractors, international organisations and diplomatic missions, with a smaller flow of surfers. The airport's airline list shows links via Brussels, Casablanca, Addis Ababa and Nairobi, so a charter earns its place by timing and by keeping a group together.

The Liberian year: the dry months and the rains

The climate is equatorial, hot all year, and the calendar for a visit is set by the rain:

November to April
the drier half of the year. The dusty harmattan wind blows inland from November to March, and January is the driest month in Monrovia, with about 51 mm
best for roads and travel
May to October
heavy rain. Monrovia averages about 4,600 mm a year, and June alone brings about 958 mm. Many roads become impassable
wet
Robertsport surf
swells are listed as more frequent from April to October, July and August being the most reliable, while March and April combine decent waves with less rain
a trade-off with the roads

The Liberian calendar: national days

Public holidays close offices, so we check the dates against the schedule before a permit request goes in:

February to May
Armed Forces Day on 11 February, National Decoration Day on the second Wednesday of March, Fast and Prayer Day on the second Friday of April and National Unification Day on 14 May
26 July
Independence Day, the main national holiday, in the middle of the wet season
24 August
National Flag Day
November and December
Thanksgiving on the first Thursday of November, the birthday of William V. S. Tubman on 29 November, and Christmas Day

Planning around the holidays

We book the cars and driver together with the aircraft and keep a margin for the airport road on any public holiday.

Flying to Liberia with a dog or a cat

A pet can travel in the cabin, but Liberia asks for its own paperwork, and the way home falls under stricter British rules.

The one fact to read before you book

A published guide to Liberian entry lists an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, obtained before arrival, a health certificate endorsed by the government vet of the country of departure, and a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry. It says there is no quarantine if every condition is met.

These conditions are a starting point only. We obtain the requirements from the Ministry in writing, with the entry point, before the aircraft is confirmed.

Coming home, a pet from a country outside the simple British scheme, as we understand Liberia to be, needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, then a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample before the animal travels. The wait is not required if the animal was vaccinated, blood-tested and given a British health certificate before it left, so we ask owners to do the tests before the outward flight. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

We confirm in writing which entry point will receive the animal and which papers are needed. Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species are set out in our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price.

Where Liberian empty legs come from

– A charter that lands at Roberts International and does not wait;

– Aircraft repositioned after a contract elsewhere in West Africa.

Whatever is free is on our empty legs page. A selection of Liberian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Liberia (Monrovia) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £19,200
UK (London Luton) - Liberia (Monrovia) Praetor 600 9 seats £19,400
UK (Manchester) - Liberia (Monrovia) Praetor 600 9 seats £19,850
Liberia (Monrovia) - UK (Bristol) Challenger 605 12 seats £24,400
Liberia (Monrovia) - UK (Birmingham) Challenger 605 12 seats £25,000
UK (Farnborough) - Liberia (Monrovia) Legacy 650 13 seats £25,850
UK (Edinburgh) - Liberia (Monrovia) Challenger 605 12 seats £26,650
Liberia (Monrovia) - UK (London Gatwick) Falcon 2000LXS 10 seats £27,550

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Manchester to Monrovia with nine aboard works out at about £2,200 a seat, and with four aboard about £4,950.

Helicopter charter

We found no helicopter charter operator in Liberia that we can verify, so we name none. The helicopter activity listed at Spriggs Payne is mainly United Nations operations, which are not for hire. When a request comes in, we ask whether a machine can be brought in for the dates, who the operator is, and where each landing site is.

The only short transfer that comes up is from Roberts International to the city, about 25 nautical miles in a straight line to Spriggs Payne, which a helicopter covers in 20 min at 115 knots against a road under construction. A landing away from an airport needs the site agreed in advance, and for most clients a car and driver from the handler remain the practical answer.

Liberian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

MONROVIA · A DELEGATION

Six people for meetings with a ministry

Biggin Hill - Monrovia and return, Praetor 600, about 6 h 45 min each way · 6 pax

The visas were the longest item, and the handler confirmed customs for the arrival date in writing.

GRAN CANARIA STOP · TWO LIGHT-JET TRAVELLERS

Two engineers with soft bags

Farnborough - Monrovia via Gran Canaria, Phenom 300E, about 8 h · 2 pax

They accepted the extra landing in return for a lower quote.

ROBERTSPORT · A SURF WEEK

Eight friends with boards

London Luton - Monrovia, Challenger 605, about 6 h 45 min · 8 pax

The cars for the dirt road to the coast were booked before the aircraft was.

A SITE VISIT · THREE DAYS

Two directors and a visit to a plantation

Manchester - Monrovia and return, Praetor 600, about 6 h 55 min each way · 2 pax

The schedule was built around daylight on the road from Roberts International.

WITH THE DOG · SEVERAL WEEKS OF PAPER

A couple and a labrador bound for a long posting

Biggin Hill - Monrovia, Praetor 600, about 6 h 45 min · 2 pax + dog

The import permit and entry point were confirmed in writing first and set the date, and the dog was blood-tested before leaving, so there was no three-month wait at home.

EMPTY LEG · A FLEXIBLE RETURN

Home from Monrovia on a repositioning flight

Monrovia - Birmingham, Challenger 605 empty leg, about 6 h 50 min · 5 pax

The client gave us a window of three days instead of a date and paid about £25,000, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Liberia

1How long does it take to fly to Liberia by private jet?

About 6 hours 45 minutes from London Biggin Hill on a Praetor 600, without a stop. A Phenom 300E stops in Gran Canaria and takes about 8 hours 05 minutes.

2How much does a private jet to Liberia cost?

From about £45,700 one way from Biggin Hill on a Praetor 600. A Challenger 605 on the same departure is about £58,450, and from Edinburgh about £63,450.

3Which airport do private jets use in Liberia?

Roberts International (ROB / GLRB) at Harbel, about 56 to 60 km from Monrovia, with a runway of about 3,350 metres, listed open round the clock with customs. We found no private terminal with its own lounge; handling is compulsory.

4Do British passengers need a visa and a permit for a private flight to Liberia?

Yes, a visa is needed before departure, through the Liberian Embassy in London. The aircraft needs a landing permit and a parking slot from the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority, and agents advise 48 to 72 hours as a lead time.

5What does the Foreign Office advise about travel to Liberia?

The pages we read list no region where it advises against travel. They describe high crime, poor roads often impassable in the rains, and particular care near the Ivorian border and in the Sapo area.

6Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Liberia?

Yes, with several weeks of planning. A published guide lists an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, a government-endorsed health certificate and a rabies vaccination 30 days to 12 months before entry, and we confirm the rules with the Ministry in writing. The return follows the British rules for countries outside the simple scheme, including a rabies blood test and a three-month wait.
