Private jet charter in Sardinia

Two hours and a quarter from a London airfield puts you over Sardinia, and the decision that counts comes after that: which of the island's three jet airports is nearest to the bed you are sleeping in. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around the coast you are really going to, the season and the length of the stay. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Sardinia is bigger than most visitors expect, with the Costa Smeralda in the north-east, the town of Alghero in the north-west and Cagliari in the south, and the roads between them are slow. This page is written for the island as a whole and tells you which gateway belongs to which trip.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sardinia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Sardinia?

Two hours fifteen from Biggin Hill, a little under three from Scotland, and one hour of clock difference to remember on landing, because Sardinia keeps Central European time. At 769 to 1096 nautical miles this is a comfortable short-haul sector for a light jet, and the table below uses Olbia as the reference airport because it is where most of the traffic goes. Alghero is barely two minutes closer to Britain and Cagliari about ten minutes further, so the choice of gateway moves the clock far less than it moves the road time at the other end.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Olbia a little after ten local time. The terminal is about 4 km from the town and roughly 32 km from Porto Cervo, so a client who left a London office at half past five can be on a Costa Smeralda terrace for lunch. By helicopter the last stretch takes under ten minutes in season. Add the drive to the British airfield and the quick processing at both ends and the journey from central London to the Emerald Coast comes to around four and a half hours, against a full day by scheduled flights and a transfer.

Light jet or midsize: what decides it for Sardinia

– Up to four people with ordinary bags, a Phenom 300E is the sensible answer, and a Citation XLS+ on the same sector from Biggin Hill is priced about £2,550 higher one way. That difference pays for the villa car and the boat for a week;

– Past that, or with beach luggage, golf bags, dive kit, a pushchair or a dog, we quote a midsize jet beside it so you see both figures. A summer family carries far more than the passenger list suggests, and the hold decides;

– Heavy aircraft are for large parties, for a crew that stays with you across several Mediterranean stops, and for trips where Sardinia is the first leg of something longer.

Sardinia works as a base for a Mediterranean loop. The mainland business cities of Rome and Milan are sectors of an hour or so, Nice and the Balearics sit within a light jet's reach, and the other end of the island itself is a short turboprop hop. Typical one-way prices from Olbia:

Alghero or Cagliari from Olbia: why the island needs an aircraft

By road Alghero is about 140 km from Olbia and takes one and a half to two hours, and Cagliari is about 264 km and roughly three hours. A Pilatus PC-12 covers the 60 nautical miles to Alghero in about 45 min and the 104 to Cagliari in about 55 min, so a party that wants two coasts in one trip often lands the London jet at one airport and flies out of another, with the aircraft never waiting. The honest alternative is to stay on one coast, and for a holiday that is only about the Costa Smeralda we say so.

Before you accept an onward quote from Sardinia

– Which airport, and in which month. Olbia is slot-coordinated in summer and parking there is limited in July and August, so a quote for an August departure should say where the aircraft will wait, or whether it goes away and returns for you;

– Whether the aircraft stays or goes. Many jets that drop passengers at Olbia reposition to Cagliari, Rome or Pisa rather than wait on a crowded apron, and each of those legs can appear in a quote. Ask what is included;

– Whether the itinerary is one booking. London to Olbia, then Cagliari, then home arranged as a single trip costs noticeably less than three separate quotes, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning each time.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Sardinia:

Light jets, for couples and small parties

At two hours fifteen this is the class for three or four people with beach bags, and it is where most of the cheaper bookings land. The runways at all three Sardinian gateways are far longer than any of these needs, so you pay for the hour and not for capability you will not use.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Sardinia sits inside the Mediterranean fleet, so outside the peak weeks there is usually an aircraft within a couple of hours of the island, in Rome, Milan or Nice, and in August the same operators often have a jet that has just dropped its passengers on the north coast and is looking for a way home.

Business aviation airports in Sardinia

Three airports carry the whole of Sardinian business aviation, and they are far enough apart that choosing between them is the main planning decision on the island. All three require slots and compulsory handling, which the handler books for you.

Airport What it gives you
Olbia Costa Smeralda
OLB / LIEO
The answer for the Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and La Maddalena, and the busiest private airport on the island. One runway of about 2,745 m (05/23), fire category 8, about 4 km from Olbia town and 32 km from Porto Cervo. Eccelsa Aviation runs a dedicated private terminal of 4,000 m2 with a 10-hectare apron that can hold more than 120 large aircraft in summer, and a second ground-supervision agent also works there. Slots and handling are compulsory, the airport is slot-coordinated in the summer season, and night noise abatement applies
Alghero-Fertilia
AHO / LIEA
The gateway for the north-west: Alghero old town, Capo Caccia, Porto Conte and the Stintino coast. A 3,000 m runway (02/20), fire category 7, about 9 km north-west of the town, listed as an airport of entry with customs and as open 24 hours. Slots and handling are compulsory, and a ground-supervision agent is available. A good choice when the trip is not on the Costa Smeralda, and about 140 km from Olbia by road
Cagliari Elmas
CAG / LIEE
The southern door, about 7 km from the city centre with a 2,804 m runway (14/32). Open round the clock, with a general aviation terminal staffed 08:00 to 20:00 and at other hours by written request for an extension fee. Slots and handling are compulsory and the operator handles customs. For Forte Village, Villasimius and the south coast, and the right airport when the trip starts in the capital. Cagliari is about 264 km from Olbia by road

Four points settle most Sardinian arrivals:

Match the gateway to the coast

Olbia for the Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and La Maddalena. Alghero for Alghero itself, Capo Caccia and the north-west beaches. Cagliari for the south, from Forte Village to Villasimius. Landing in the wrong place costs two to three hours on the road each way, and no aircraft makes that up.

Hours, slots and noise

Olbia is slot-coordinated in summer, limits parking in July and August and applies night noise abatement procedures; published opening hours differ between sources, so we confirm them for your date. Cagliari lists round-the-clock operation but staffs its general aviation terminal 08:00 to 20:00, with an extension fee outside that. Alghero is listed as open 24 hours too.

Border and passport

Italy is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you pass border control and customs at the private terminal. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport under ten years old and valid for at least three months after departure. A first-time visitor may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints.

Car, boat and helicopter

Tell us the handler, the villa or hotel and the marina, not just the airport. In August the road, the boat and the helicopter are booked on the same days as the jet, so we reserve them together and give the driver the terminal and the aircraft registration.

business aviation

Border, customs and the way home

Because Britain sits outside Schengen, a flight from London into Sardinia is an arrival from a third country: passengers see the border police as well as customs, and both are arranged by the terminal handler, so there is normally no queue with scheduled passengers. Olbia and Alghero are listed as airports of entry, and the handler confirms the officers' availability for your arrival time. For the return, the General Aviation Report must reach the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure, and visitors who need no visa but are not British or Irish citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK.

From the apron to the marina

Sardinia is a large island of mostly empty country, and the figures that matter are the road times between the three airports and the places people actually sleep. Most of the cost of choosing wrongly is paid in the car.

Olbia airport to Olbia town
about 4 km, so close that the airport sits almost inside the town
under 10 minutes
Olbia airport to Porto Rotondo
about 20 km along the coast road
about 25 minutes
Olbia airport to Porto Cervo
about 32 km on the SS125, the transfer that defines the Costa Smeralda
35 to 40 minutes
Alghero airport to Alghero
about 9 km north-west of the old town
a short drive
Alghero to Olbia
about 140 km on the SS729, with roadworks that can add time
1.5 to 2 hours
Cagliari airport to the centre
about 7 km, with Forte Village at 47 km and Villasimius at 62 km
about 10 minutes to the centre, 40 to 60 to the resorts
Cagliari to Olbia
about 264 km, the length of the island
about 3 hours

Flying to Sardinia with a dog or a cat

Italy asks for more paperwork than the flight itself takes. The animal sits beside you in the cabin and the sector is short enough that most dogs sleep through it, but the certificate has a ten-day life from the day it is issued, so the date on it matters. An island trip is also a long stay by habit, which is why the way home needs planning as much as the way out.

private flight with animals

What Italy and the EU ask for:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or on the same day, never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued no more than ten days before the animal enters the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at the first point of entry into the EU, which we confirm in writing together with the paperwork before the flight;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Sardinian run

– The tapeworm treatment is for the way home, not the way out, so it is a vet appointment you book on the island, towards the end of the stay. A fortnight leaves room for it and a long weekend does not, and on the Costa Smeralda in August vets are busy, so ask your hotel for a name before you leave;

– A pet passport issued in England, Scotland or Wales cannot be used to enter the EU. The certificate has to be a fresh one for each trip, and a dog whose rabies vaccination lapses while it is away loses the right to come back on it;

– Summer heat is real on the apron and in the villa. Tell us about the animal in the first message so that the car, the boat and any helicopter transfer accept it before the quote.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Sardinian calendar: a season built around the sea

Sardinia has one dominant season and a handful of dates that matter around it. The terminal at Olbia handles about 15,000 private flights a year, and about 80 percent of them fall between late May and early October. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

January to Lent
Village winter festivals and carnivals: the masked Mamuthones of Mamoiada on 17 January, and Sa Sartiglia in Oristano on the Sunday and Tuesday before Lent. Cultural trips, small parties, and very light private traffic
Holy Week
Processions across the island in late March or April, with Alghero among the best places to see them. A quiet, atmospheric weekend rather than a rush
1 to 4 May
The Festival of Sant'Efisio, the largest in Sardinia, with a procession from Cagliari to Nora. It fills the capital and the south, so book that weekend early
Late May to early June
The Porto Cervo season opens: the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta runs from late May into June, and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda season continues to September. In June the Sardinian round of the World Rally Championship has used Alghero as its base
Late June to early September
Peak private traffic across the island, heaviest at Olbia. Slots are mandatory from May to September, parking tightens in July and August, and with the sea at roughly 20 to 26 degrees the coast fills
Around 15 August
Ferragosto, the tightest fortnight of the year. Slots, apron space, helicopters, boats and cars are booked weeks ahead, and jets that drop passengers on the north coast reposition to Cagliari, Rome or Pisa
September
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup at Porto Cervo is normally held this month. The sea is still warm, the crowds thin, and the shoulder weeks are the best value on the island
October to April
Traffic falls sharply. A charter can usually be arranged in a day or two, and the island belongs to its residents and to walkers, wine and food travellers

Why an August week costs more

Not the flying. The fleet around Italy and southern France is large and Sardinia sits comfortably inside it. What gets tight is the apron, the slot and the car, all in the same fortnight, and the fixed shape of the Olbia season means every operator is chasing the same parking space. A booking made a fortnight before Ferragosto can still be done, but it pays more, and it may mean an aircraft positioned from Rome or Nice or a drop-and-go plan. Made five or six weeks earlier the same trip is simpler and cheaper. Outside June to September Sardinia is one of the easier islands to fly into.

Ways to bring the Sardinian price down

  • Move the dates a few days where you can. The shoulder weeks in June and September are quieter and cheaper than the middle of August, and the sea is already warm;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet already in Rome, Milan or Nice takes less positioning than one from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful share of the bill;
  • Choose the airport that matches the stay. Landing at Cagliari for a Costa Smeralda holiday saves nothing on the flight and costs about three hours on the road each way;
  • Agree the aircraft's plan for the week. A jet that goes away and comes back for you can cost less than one that waits on a crowded apron, and the quote should say which you are paying for.

Types of flights

Sardinia produces a different mix from the Italian mainland cities we cover, because it is a holiday island first and a business destination a distant second.

  • Summer villa and yacht travel to the Costa Smeralda, usually families and friends who stay one or two weeks and want a boat or a helicopter on arrival;
  • Sailing weekends around the Porto Cervo regattas, with crews, owners and guests landing on the same days;
  • Motorsport and sport, from the rally in June to golf and diving in the shoulder months;
  • Two-coast loops, landing at Olbia and leaving from Cagliari or Alghero, so that the aircraft never waits for you;
  • Short city breaks in spring and autumn, centred on Alghero or Cagliari with the interior as the programme.

The day trip is worth a closer look, if only because it is rare. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for. At two hours fifteen each way it is a long day, but for a site visit on the island or a lunch on the Emerald Coast it usually still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters, and in August we quote it both ways because the parking question changes the answer.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Sardinian routes they follow the season and the weekend change-over, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Sardinian empty legs come from

– Summer change-over days. Aircraft bring one villa party in on the Saturday and take another home, and the sector that finds no passenger on the day is the one offered;

– Repositioning in the peak. With parking limited at Olbia in July and August, jets that have dropped passengers move to Cagliari, Rome or Pisa and return later, and those short legs are released at short notice;

– Regatta weekends. Aircraft come in for the Porto Cervo events and go back empty to their bases afterwards, and the departures that follow them are the ones most often offered.

Because the Sardinian corridors are thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Sardinian match the day an operator releases it.

empty legs

Helicopter charter

In Sardinia a helicopter is a tool for the coast and not for the island. The distances between the three airports are too long for a light helicopter to make sense, but the last stretch from Olbia to the Emerald Coast is where rotary flight changes the day, and the same is true of the bays and villas of the north-west.

Olbia airport to Porto Cervo
against 35 to 40 minutes by road along the SS125 in season
under 10 minutes
Olbia airport to Cala di Volpe
landings are possible at select resorts, and the site is confirmed before we quote
by agreement
Alghero to Capo Caccia and Porto Conte
the cliffs and the park are reached by helicopter or on foot
on request
Cagliari to Forte Village
about 47 km by road, with the coast road where the summer time is lost
road: about 40 min
A bay or a villa lawn on the coast
possible only with the landowner, the operator and the authorities agreeing the site
site approval first

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. Landings outside an aerodrome need the landowner's consent and the operator's confirmation of the site, so a villa lawn or a hotel pad has its status checked before we quote, not after;

– Heat and weather set the schedule. High summer temperatures reduce what a helicopter can lift, so loads and bags are checked in advance, and a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– Twin-engine machines are the sensible choice over water, and in the middle of August rotary capacity is the first thing to run out. Book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is none.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for short coast work, the wider H130 for villa transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Sardinian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridors look like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

SUMMER VILLA · THE LUGGAGE BOOKED THE CABIN

Six people and a fortnight near Porto Rotondo

Farnborough - Olbia, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 20 min · 6 pax

Beach kit, a pushchair, two sets of golf clubs and enough clothes for two weeks took the hold well beyond a light jet, and the quote moved up a class for that reason and not for the seats. The car met them at the terminal, and the return was booked together with the outbound.

THE OTHER AIRPORT WON

A group for the Costa Smeralda

London City - Olbia, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 15 min · 5 pax

They had asked for Cagliari because it is the name everyone knows. The villa was near Porto Cervo, which is about three hours from Cagliari by road. Same aircraft, ten minutes less in the air and 35 minutes on the road instead of three hours. The only cost was asking where the villa was before quoting.

MID-AUGUST · THE AIRCRAFT MOVED OUT

A family week on the Emerald Coast

Birmingham - Olbia, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 30 min · 8 pax

The apron at Olbia was full, so the jet dropped the family and flew on to the mainland to wait. It came back for them a week later, and the quote showed both legs from the start. Nobody was surprised, which is the point of asking the question early.

REGATTA WEEK · FIXED DATES

Crew and guests for a September race

London Luton - Olbia, Citation Latitude, about 2 h 20 min · 5 pax

The dates were set by the racing and not by the client. Five people, sailing bags and a request for a car to the marina. The booking went in six weeks ahead, the handler had the slot and the parking plan agreed in advance, and the helicopter for the last stretch was booked on the same timetable.

JUNE RALLY · THE NORTH-WEST

Four enthusiasts for the rally weekend

Manchester - Alghero, Citation Latitude, about 2 h 35 min · 4 pax

The rally base was in the north-west, so we flew to Alghero and not to Olbia. A direct Alghero arrival saved the one and a half to two hours' drive from Olbia, and Alghero's slot and handling were confirmed with the booking.

A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a spaniel for a June fortnight

Southampton - Olbia, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 15 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment on the island for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the villa took the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Sardinia

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Sardinia?

About 2 hours 15 minutes from Biggin Hill, London City, Farnborough or Luton to Olbia in a Phenom 300E, covering roughly 769 to 806 nautical miles. From Bristol, Cardiff or Birmingham allow 2 hours 25 to 2 hours 30, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 55. Alghero is barely two minutes closer to London and Cagliari about ten minutes further. Sardinia is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands a little after ten local time.

2How much does a private jet to Sardinia cost?

From about £10,550 one way to Alghero, £10,700 to Olbia and £11,650 to Cagliari on a Phenom 300E from Biggin Hill. A midsize Citation XLS+ from Bristol, Cardiff or Birmingham runs £14,300 to £14,650, and from Scotland allow £21,950 to £22,300 on a Challenger 350. Late June to early September, and above all the middle weeks of August, price above these figures.

3Which airport should I use for Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo?

Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB / LIEO). It is about 32 km from Porto Cervo, which is 35 to 40 minutes by car along the SS125, or under ten minutes by helicopter in season. Alghero and Cagliari are roughly two and a half and three hours from Porto Cervo by road, so they make sense only when the rest of the trip is in the north-west or the south.

4Are there slot limits for private jets in Sardinia in summer?

Yes. Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari all require slots and compulsory handling, and Olbia is slot-coordinated in the summer season. Parking at Olbia is limited in July and August, so many aircraft drop their passengers and reposition to Cagliari, Rome or Pisa. Night noise abatement procedures also apply at Olbia. We secure the slot and the parking plan before the quote is confirmed.

5When should I book a private jet to Sardinia?

Outside the peaks a day or two is usually enough. For late June to early September, and especially the two weeks around 15 August, allow several weeks, because slots, apron space, helicopters and cars all tighten together. The yacht regattas at Porto Cervo in early summer and in September also fill the north coast, so book those dates early.

6Can I take my dog to Sardinia on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Italy asks for a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older with 21 days elapsed, and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of entry. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
