Business aviation airports in Bremen

Bremen has one airport, and for a business jet it is an unusually friendly one. Bremen Airport (BRE / EDDW) sits 3.5 km south of the city centre, which puts the Marktplatz about ten minutes from the aircraft steps, and the whole field is wrapped inside Airport City, the industrial quarter where Airbus, OHB and their suppliers sit within sight of the apron. The main runway 09/27 runs 2,040 by 45 metres, enough for every business jet class in normal service, and the second strip, 700 metres, is limited to aircraft up to 5.7 tonnes.

General aviation at Bremen works differently from the dedicated business terminals in London. There is no separate FBO building on the far side of the field: crews and passengers on private flights are handled through Terminal 1, with GA passengers screened at the central security control and crews using their own entrance. It is a short walk rather than a lounge crawl, and with no queues at the private end the practical arrival time is still about half an hour before departure. Handling is arranged through the airport’s own services company and its subsidiaries, and we book it as part of the flight.

Alternatives worth knowing about, since clients ask: Hamburg is 103 km away and Hannover 89 km, both roughly an hour by road, and either can take a flight if Bremen is closed overnight or weather closes the approach. The old Bremerhaven airfield, which still appears on many charter websites, is not one of them: it closed years ago and the site is being redeveloped as an offshore port. Groningen in the Netherlands, Munster and Braunschweig round out the list of regional fields within reach.

• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• For the flight home, dogs need a tapeworm treatment with praziquantel administered by a vet 24 to 120 hours before landing in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Cats do not.

What Germany does not require is the part that makes trips to non-EU countries expensive: no rabies antibody blood test and no three-month waiting period, because the same certificate that took your dog out brings it back for up to six months.
