Private jet charter in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone lies on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, and a super-midsize jet leaves Biggin Hill and lands at Freetown in about 6 hours 30 minutes without a stop. The sector is 2,753 nautical miles, which an Embraer Praetor 600 covers in one hop, while lighter jets break the journey in the Canaries. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Sierra Leone that means the landing permit and parking slot, a named handler, and a plan for the water crossing from the airport to the capital.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sierra Leone depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Freetown International Airport at Lungi, nonstop, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Sierra Leone?

Sierra Leone keeps Greenwich Mean Time all year, so its clocks match Britain in winter and run one hour behind from spring to autumn, and the UTC hours in airport records are also local time. These are the sectors to Freetown on a Praetor 600, gate to gate:

Biggin Hill to Freetown
2,753 nautical miles, the basis for the price at the top of the page
about 6 h 30 min
Farnborough to Freetown
2,739 nautical miles, the usual choice for Surrey and Hampshire
about 6 h 25 min
Manchester to Freetown
2,847 nautical miles, the main departure for the north of England
about 6 h 40 min
Edinburgh to Freetown
2,995 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, and the longest of the four
about 7 h

Why the aircraft decides the plan

The Praetor 600 and everything larger reach Freetown from Britain in one hop. A Phenom 300E or a Citation XLS+ has a range of roughly 2,000 nautical miles, so it calls at Gran Canaria, which typically adds about an hour.

From Biggin Hill a Phenom 300E through Gran Canaria takes about 7 h 40 min gate to gate, close to an hour more than the Praetor, and our model puts it near £34,700 against £44,000. We quote both.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– On the same Praetor 600, Manchester costs about £1,400 more than Biggin Hill for Freetown, and Edinburgh about £3,650 more, because the sector is longer;

– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies home empty. For a stay the aircraft either waits at Lungi, with parking and the crew's hotel as lines of their own, or returns to Britain and comes back for you.

Private jet flights within Sierra Leone and to its neighbours

Sierra Leone has no domestic charter market that we could price honestly. Apart from Lungi there are a few airstrips, among them Hastings near the capital and Kenema in the east, but we found no verified services that would let us offer a business jet to any of them, so we quote nothing there.

The sectors we can price are international. Conakry is only 65 nautical miles away, Monrovia 230, and Dakar, Abidjan and Accra are the big gateways along the coast:

Short hops from Lungi

– Every row crosses a border, so each needs its own permit and handler;

– Conakry and Monrovia are also the natural alternates for Lungi.

Business aviation airports in Sierra Leone

For a private jet, Sierra Leone means one airport, and it is not on the capital's side of the water. The first row is the gateway, the second a nearby strip, and the last two are alternates in neighbouring countries:

Airport Ground How it operates
Freetown International (Lungi)
FNA / GFLL
at Lungi in Port Loko District, across the Sierra Leone River from the capital The only international airport in the country and the gateway for business jets. One asphalt runway, 12/30, of 10,498 feet (3,200 metres), with ILS and VOR approaches and firefighting category 8. Airport and tower are listed as open round the clock, with customs and airport of entry status. Jet fuel only, handling compulsory, and a landing permit together with a parking slot
Hastings
HGS / GFHA
on the Freetown side of the estuary, about 14 nautical miles from Lungi A short strip: one asphalt runway, 09/27, of 960 metres (3,150 feet). One handler guide lists neither customs nor immigration there, and a permit agent lists it as an airport of entry subject to its operational status. We do not treat it as a jet gateway
Conakry
CKY / GUCY
in Guinea, about 65 nautical miles to the north-west The nearest large alternate. One runway, 06/24, of 10,827 feet (3,300 metres), listed open round the clock with customs and airport of entry status. A separate country, so a diversion means a new entry and a new permit
Monrovia Roberts International
ROB / GLRB
in Liberia, about 230 nautical miles to the south-east The other alternate. One asphalt runway, 04/22, of 11,000 feet (about 3,350 metres), listed open round the clock with customs; handling is compulsory and slots are not required

Lungi began as a British air base. The newer passenger terminal includes a separate VIP terminal, and the flight-support pages we read describe VIP access and security screening arranged at short notice. We found no FBO with a lounge of its own for general aviation passengers.

Handling is compulsory, and the airport record lists flight-support organisations rather than one local operator: Jetmate Aviation, JETplus Aviation Services, International Flight Planning Solutions and Just Aviation. Marshalling, ground power, stairs, catering and crew hotels are arranged through them. How your party is met, at the VIP terminal or at the aircraft, we confirm with the handler before the flight.

Lungi's airport-of-entry status and its customs hours, which are not round the clock, are confirmed with the handler in writing for your date and hour.

Four points settle most arrivals:

Permit: ask early

The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority issues the permits. Its rules ask for applications 72 hours before the operation date, and permit agents advise 48 to 72 hours.

Validity and parking

One handler guide lists a landing permit as valid for 24 hours and an overflight permit for 72 hours, with a parking slot required together with the landing permit.

Papers for the permit

Aircraft certificates and insurance, the schedule and routing, crew and passenger passport copies and a local receiving party. A private aircraft does not normally need an air operator certificate.

Crew visas

Crew visas are listed as issued on arrival through the general declaration, usually for up to 14 days.

Arriving from Britain: visa, health declaration and the Foreign Office advice

Sierra Leone asks British passengers for a visa and for a health declaration, and both are quick if done in advance.

Visa
British citizens need a visa. It can be bought on arrival for US$80 in cash dollars, or applied for beforehand as an e-visa. A single-entry visa is valid for 90 days from issue for a stay of up to 30 days
apply online before departure
Passport
valid for at least six months after the date of the visa application
check the expiry
Yellow fever
a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required
bring the certificate
Health declaration
completed on the Sierra Leone Health Travel Portal within 72 hours before travel, for arrivals and for departures, with the QR code or reference number kept to hand
on the way in and on the way out

The Foreign Office entry page also mentions enhanced health screening on arrival and a wider Ebola outbreak that the World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern. We read the page again before every departure.

The Foreign Office advice, as published

The summary page we read carries no advise-against-travel statement for the country. The safety pages describe overall crime as comparatively low but rising, with robberies, sometimes at knifepoint, reported around Congo Cross, Wilkinson Road, Lumley Beach and Aberdeen, and at beach resorts on the Freetown peninsula and nearby islands. Visitors are advised not to walk alone at night and to arrange transport in advance. Protests can turn violent, and terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out.

Serious road accidents are common, and outside the Freetown peninsula the advice is to avoid driving at night. The beaches have no lifeguards, and currents along the coast are strong. We ask clients to read the full text before they travel.

Cash, clearance and the way home

Strict customs rules apply, and anyone leaving with precious stones needs an export licence.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Passengers with another passport should check their own entry rules.

Which part of Sierra Leone, and how to cross from the airport

With one jet airport the question is not which field but how to cross the estuary, because Lungi is not on the capital's side:

Water taxi
two companies, Sea Coach Express and SeaBird Water Taxi, run a 30 to 45 minute service between Freetown and Lungi, timed to flights, with a courtesy bus at the Lungi end
the usual choice
Ferry
the one-hour car ferry between Lungi Tagrin and Kissy Town runs only when there is enough demand
not for a tight schedule
By road
around three hours round the estuary, there is no car hire at the airport, and the High Commission's staff rarely use this route even by day
not recommended

Once across, the capital offers more than the crossing suggests. The site of the Cotton Tree, the city's symbol until a storm brought it down, marks the centre, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary lies in the rainforest reserve of the peninsula a few miles away, Bunce Island, with the ruins of a slave fortress, is reached by boat, and the peninsula is ringed with beaches, among them Lumley, Tokeh and River Number 2.

Most people who charter to Sierra Leone are there for work: mining and energy companies, contractors and international organisations. Airline links run via Brussels, Casablanca, Istanbul, Addis Ababa and Nairobi, so a charter earns its place by timing and by keeping a group together.

The Sierra Leone year: the dry months and the rains

The climate is tropical, and the calendar for a visit is set by the rain:

December to April
the dry season. The dusty harmattan wind blows in from the Sahara, nights can fall to about 16 degrees Celsius, and February is the driest month in Freetown, with about 6 mm
best for beaches and roads
May to November
the rainy season. Freetown averages about 4,400 mm a year, with about 1,190 mm in July and about 1,080 mm in August, and the roads suffer. The Foreign Office notes that rough seas from May to October may delay or cancel the water taxis and the ferry
wet

The Sierra Leone calendar: national days

Public holidays close offices, and the Islamic dates move, so we check them before a permit request goes in:

January to March
New Year's Day on 1 January, Armed Forces Day on 18 February and International Women's Day on 8 March
Easter and 27 April
Good Friday and Easter Monday in March or April, and Independence Day on 27 April, the main national holiday
May and the Eids
Labour Day on 1 May, then Korite at the end of Ramadan, Tabaski at the Feast of the Sacrifice and Mawlid for the birthday of the Prophet, whose dates move through the year
December
Christmas Day on 25 December and Boxing Day on 26 December

Planning around the holidays

We book the water taxi and the cars together with the aircraft and keep a margin on any public holiday.

Flying to Sierra Leone with a dog or a cat

A pet can travel in the cabin, but Sierra Leone asks for its own paperwork, and the way home falls under stricter British rules.

The one fact to read before you book

A published guide to Sierra Leonean entry lists an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture before arrival, an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 6 months before arrival, and an original health certificate completed within 48 hours of entry and endorsed by a government vet. It names Freetown International Airport as the entry point and says there is no quarantine if every condition is met.

We obtain the requirements from the Ministry in writing, with the entry point, before the aircraft is confirmed.

Coming home, a pet from a country outside the simple British scheme, as we understand Sierra Leone to be, needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, then a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample before the animal travels. The wait is not required if the animal was vaccinated, blood-tested and given a British health certificate before it left, so we ask owners to do the tests before the outward flight. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

We confirm in writing which entry point will receive the animal and which papers are needed. Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species are set out in our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price.

Where Sierra Leone empty legs come from

– A charter that lands at Lungi and does not wait;

– Aircraft repositioned after a contract elsewhere in West Africa.

Whatever is free is on our empty legs page. A selection of Sierra Leone empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Sierra Leone (Freetown) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £18,500
UK (London Luton) - Sierra Leone (Freetown) Praetor 600 9 seats £18,650
UK (Manchester) - Sierra Leone (Freetown) Praetor 600 9 seats £19,050
Sierra Leone (Freetown) - UK (Bristol) Challenger 605 12 seats £23,400
Sierra Leone (Freetown) - UK (Birmingham) Challenger 605 12 seats £24,000
UK (Farnborough) - Sierra Leone (Freetown) Legacy 650 13 seats £24,850
UK (Edinburgh) - Sierra Leone (Freetown) Challenger 605 12 seats £25,600
Sierra Leone (Freetown) - UK (London Gatwick) Falcon 2000LXS 10 seats £26,500

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Manchester to Freetown with nine aboard works out at about £2,100 a seat, and with four aboard about £4,750.

Helicopter charter

We found no helicopter charter operator in Sierra Leone that we can verify, so we name none.

The only short transfer that comes up is from Lungi to the capital, about 9 nautical miles in a straight line across the estuary, which a helicopter would cover in 15 min at 115 knots against a water taxi of 30 to 45 minutes. For most clients the water taxi arranged by the handler remains the practical answer.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Sierra Leone

1How long does it take to fly to Sierra Leone by private jet?

About 6 hours 30 minutes from London Biggin Hill on a Praetor 600, without a stop. A Phenom 300E stops in Gran Canaria and takes about 7 hours 40 minutes.

2How much does a private jet to Sierra Leone cost?

From about £44,000 one way from Biggin Hill on a Praetor 600. A Challenger 605 on the same departure is about £56,250, and from Edinburgh about £60,950.

3Which airport do private jets use in Sierra Leone?

Freetown International (FNA / GFLL) at Lungi, with a runway of about 3,200 metres, listed open round the clock with customs. It lies across the estuary from the capital, so the last leg is a water taxi of 30 to 45 minutes. We found no private terminal with a lounge of its own; handling is compulsory.

4Do British passengers need a visa and a permit for a private flight to Sierra Leone?

Yes, a visa is needed, either as an e-visa beforehand or on arrival for US$80 in cash, together with a yellow fever certificate and a health declaration within 72 hours before travel. The aircraft needs a landing permit and a parking slot from the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, and agents advise 48 to 72 hours as a lead time.

5What does the Foreign Office advise about travel to Sierra Leone?

The summary page we read carries no advise-against-travel statement. The safety pages describe rising crime in Freetown, poor roads, strong sea currents and rough seas from May to October, and the entry page mentions enhanced health screening on arrival.

6Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Sierra Leone?

Yes, with several weeks of planning. A published guide lists an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, a microchip, a rabies vaccination 30 days to 6 months before arrival and a government-endorsed health certificate, and we confirm the rules with the Ministry in writing. The return follows the British rules for countries outside the simple scheme, including a rabies blood test and a three-month wait.
