Private jet charter in Nepal

Kathmandu lies close to 4,000 nautical miles from London in a straight line and about 4,746 on the track a business jet actually flies, which puts Nepal beyond the nonstop reach of most cabins and makes the fuel stop the first thing we plan. Private Jets UK files the landing permit, finds a handler on the ground and matches the airport to the part of the country you are heading for. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Nepal that means an application to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal made well ahead of the date and a choice between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Bhairahawa.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter to Nepal depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Kathmandu with one technical stop in Dubai and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Nepal?

Nepal keeps a time zone of its own, 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and 4 hours 45 minutes ahead of British Summer Time, with no change of clocks. The figures below start at London Biggin Hill, use the lowest-priced aircraft that can fly the sector and count about an hour on the ground for the technical stop:

London to Kathmandu
4,746 nautical miles planned, the capital and the only airport in the country that most business jets use
about 11 h 55 min
London to Pokhara
4,671 nautical miles planned, the lakeside city below the Annapurna range, with a modern international-class runway
about 11 h 45 min
London to Bhairahawa (Lumbini)
4,639 nautical miles planned, Gautam Buddha International, the airport for the birthplace of the Buddha in the southern plains
about 11 h 40 min

Why the planned distance is longer than the map

Measured along a straight line, Kathmandu is about 4,000 nautical miles from London. That figure never appears in a quote. A business jet follows a track that avoids the airspace which insurers and regulators advise against, and for South Asia that means a long arc through south-eastern Europe, Turkey and the Gulf. Flown that way, the sector measures 4,746 nautical miles, and every price on this page is built on that distance.

Gulf airspace can change at short notice, so the plan names a second stop beside the first, normally Doha or Muscat.

Range decides where the aircraft lands. An Embraer Praetor 600 is rated at 4,018 nautical miles and we plan each leg at about 85 percent of a published range. Dubai lies 3,067 nautical miles from Biggin Hill, inside that limit, and leaves 1,679 for the second leg. A Gulfstream G650ER or a Global 7500 can fly the whole 4,746 nautical miles without landing, in about 9 h 50 min in the G650ER.

What the clock says on arrival

A Praetor 600 that leaves Biggin Hill at seven in the morning, British summer time, takes about 11 h 55 min to Kathmandu including the stop and touches down shortly before midnight Nepal time. The customs window printed in the Nepalese AIP closes at 00:30 local time, so the margin is thin in summer and gone in winter. We plan backwards from the closing hour, and sometimes the better plan is a night in Dubai.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

What sits outside the figures

– The choice of Nepalese airport moves the price by a couple of thousand pounds. From London Biggin Hill the Praetor 600 reaches Kathmandu for about £74,100, Pokhara for about £72,950 and Bhairahawa for about £72,500, both slightly cheaper because they lie a little closer to Dubai. This page is anchored to Kathmandu because it is the capital and the busiest airport;

– Handling at the stop, the Nepalese permit and its fee, and airport charges are quoted on top. The prices are one-way and include the empty positioning flight home.

Private jet flights within Nepal and to its neighbours

The three international airports are close together by jet standards. Kathmandu to Pokhara is 80 nautical miles, Kathmandu to Bhairahawa 108, and Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata and Dhaka all lie within about 500 nautical miles of the capital. The figures show scale rather than a firm quote, because a foreign aircraft needs a permit for each landing and a second authority on the far side:

Before you plan a loop of the country

– The road from Kathmandu to Pokhara is a long day in a car, and the flight takes under an hour. Whether the jet that brought you from Britain may fly that leg is a question we put to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal in writing, and the answer decides whether the aircraft waits or goes to Delhi and comes back;

– Crossing into India or Bangladesh adds a second authority with its own permit, so a multi-country itinerary is drawn up in full at the start.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Business aviation airports in Nepal

A foreign aircraft lands only where its permit says it may, so the airport is chosen together with the permit. Kathmandu takes nearly all private arrivals:

Airport Ground How it operates
Kathmandu Tribhuvan International
VNKT / KTM
about 6 km east of the city centre, 4,390 ft (1,338 m) above sea level The country's gateway and our price anchor. One asphalt runway, 02/20, 3,050 m by 46 m in the aerodrome data of the Nepalese AIP, on a tabletop site with a slope of 1.2 percent. A later extension to 3,350 m is reported, so we ask for the declared distances. There is no ILS, and the approaches are VOR/DME and RNAV/RNP, with obstacles on the approach. Fire cover is category IX. The AIP lists fuelling, handling, customs and immigration from 00:15 to 18:45 UTC, which is 06:00 to 00:30 local time, and air traffic services from 00:15 to 21:15 UTC, with extensions on permission from the airport's general manager. Some databases show the field open round the clock and without slots, and we treat the printed hours as binding until the handler confirms otherwise in writing. Fuel is Jet A-1 only, with no de-icing, hangar or repair for visiting aircraft. Trip-support companies listed for the field are VVIP Flight, IFOS Aviation Services and Just Aviation, and Ghale Group describes a Private & VVIP Aviation FBO on the airport with permits, ground power, customs, immigration and visa on arrival at the aircraft, crew visas and catering. A government VIP terminal receives state guests
Pokhara International
VNPR / PKR
about 200 km west of the capital and 2.5 km east of the old domestic airport, 2,638 ft (804 m) above sea level The airport for the lakes and the Annapurna range. One concrete runway, 12/30, 2,500 m by 45 m, with an ILS to runway 30 and non-precision approaches to runway 12. One database lists fire category 8, jet fuel, customs and the status of an airport of entry, with VVIP Flight as the only support company. The field mostly sees domestic flights and a few international charters, and it opened without customs facilities, so we have the handler confirm customs in writing. Published hours differ between sources, so the hours for the date are confirmed before the aircraft is planned
Gautam Buddha International (Bhairahawa)
VNBW / BWA
at Siddharthanagar, also known as Bhairahawa, in the southern plains near the Indian border, 344 ft (105 m) above sea level The airport for Lumbini, Nepal's second international airport. One asphalt runway, 10/28, 3,000 m long, with an ILS and VOR/DME and RNAV/RNP approaches. One database lists customs, the status of an airport of entry, fire category 9 and round-the-clock hours, with BIZAV International and VVIP Flight as support companies. Winter fog and low visibility stopped scheduled international carriers soon after it opened, though the authorities promote it, with Pokhara, as an alternate for Kathmandu
Other Nepalese airfields
-
mountain and Terai airstrips Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary) has a runway of 527 m by 30 m with a gradient of 11.7 percent at 2,846 m above sea level, and takes helicopters and small STOL aircraft only. We have found no published information that any other Nepalese airfield is open to a foreign business jet, and we plan none outside the three above without written approval

Five rules shape every arrival:

The permit comes from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal

The AIP asks for applications for a non-scheduled landing at least 15 working days ahead, and permit services quote about seven days for charters filed through a local agent in Kathmandu. We plan on the longer figure. The charter permission fee is listed at the equivalent of US$56.50, and an overflight needs its own permission.

Papers that must match

The application names the operator, aircraft type and registration, call sign, schedule in UTC, entry and exit points and purpose, with the registration, airworthiness and insurance certificates behind it. A change of tail number, date or route can mean an amended permit.

Mind the printed hours

The customs window printed in the AIP closes at 00:30 local time, and the field is not one to arrive at after it without a written extension from the airport management.

Weather and the approach

Kathmandu has a tabletop runway with no ILS, so low cloud, monsoon storms or winter fog can hold an arrival or send it to an alternate. Pokhara and Bhairahawa have an ILS and are named as diversion fields.

Parking and fuel

The international apron at Kathmandu has 17 positions, only three of them for wide-body aircraft, so a long stay is not something to assume. We ask the handler to confirm parking in writing, and if it cannot be given the aircraft positions to Delhi or Dubai and returns.

Arriving from Britain: visa, customs declaration and what to carry

The traveller, the aircraft and the papers that tie them together are all checked on the way in.

Visa
British citizens need a visa for a visit of up to 90 days. The usual route is a visa on arrival: the form is filled in online up to 15 days ahead and the fee paid at the airport against the receipt, or the form is completed at a terminal there. An advance visa can be collected from the Nepalese embassy in London. The published on-arrival fees are typically US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days
before departure
Passport
Valid for at least six months after the day of entry
every passenger
Insurance and first night
Border officers may ask for travel insurance covering healthcare and repatriation and for the address of the first night
carry the papers
Cash
Banknotes above US$5,000, or above US$10,000 counting travellers' cheques, are declared on arrival, and the certified declaration is kept for the departure
declare it
Vaccination certificate
A yellow fever certificate is needed when the traveller arrives from a country with a risk of transmission
check the route

What the British government says about the country

Heavy rain can bring floods and landslides that leave some areas unstable, and an earthquake can trigger more. Insurance should cover the itinerary, the planned activities and an emergency. We read the Foreign Office advice before a route is fixed.

Coming home is a flight into Britain: a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation for Britain. The first landing must be at an aerodrome that is regulated for customs, since a landing at an unregulated one carries a fine of £2,500.

Which airport for which part of Nepal

Start from the bed and work back to the runway:

Kathmandu Valley
The capital, the old squares of Patan and Bhaktapur and the temple of Pashupatinath, which stands about a kilometre from the runway. Business visitors are nearly always here
Kathmandu
Pokhara and the Annapurna range
The lakeside base for the Annapurna treks, about 200 km from the capital, with a modern runway of its own
Pokhara, or Kathmandu and a short hop
Lumbini
The birthplace of the Buddha, a World Heritage site in the southern plains, about 108 nautical miles from Kathmandu in a straight line. The airport at Bhairahawa serves it
Bhairahawa
Everest region
The villages of the Khumbu lie beyond Lukla, whose runway takes helicopters and STOL aircraft only, so a jet client flies to Kathmandu and changes to a helicopter
Kathmandu, then helicopter

Kathmandu, Pokhara and the mountains: what our clients go for

Eight of the world's ten highest mountains lie wholly or partly in Nepal, and the tallest, Everest, which the Nepalese call Sagarmatha, stands at 8,848.86 metres. Most visitors come to see that wall of rock from close by, on foot or by air.

UNESCO lists four places in Nepal: the Kathmandu Valley, Sagarmatha National Park, Chitwan National Park and Lumbini. In the valley the old royal squares, the stupas and the riverside temple complex of Pashupatinath make a day of walking. Pokhara is the gentler half of a trip, with a lake, boat trips and the Annapurna range standing over the water in clear weather.

Nepalese seasons: clear autumns, a hot spring and the monsoon

The weather decides the views, the roads and the mornings on which a runway is usable:

October to December
Rains end by about mid-October and the weather turns cool, clear and dry, the best stretch for mountain views and treks
busiest season
January and February
Cold on the high ground and often foggy in the lowlands. Fog has disrupted flights at Kathmandu and Bhairahawa
fog risk
March to May
April and May are dry and hot in the lowlands, with thunderstorms building before the monsoon. The spring trekking season runs through these months
second season
June to September
The wet season. Sustained rain typically arrives around mid-June, cloud cover reduces safety margins for aviation, and landslides interrupt the roads
monsoon

Weather is a scheduling fact

Kathmandu has no ILS, so a cloud base that would not matter in Europe can close the approach. We plan Kathmandu with an alternate at Pokhara or Bhairahawa and give guests a spare half day in the monsoon and in January.

The Nepalese calendar: Dashain, Tihar and the spring festivals

Most dates follow the lunar calendar and move from one year to the next, so the months below are typical and not fixed:

February or March
Maha Shivaratri, the night of Shiva, draws pilgrims to Pashupatinath, beside the airport. Holi, the festival of colours, follows in March
Mid April
The Nepali New Year, on the first day of Baishak, is a public holiday, and the spring trekking season is under way
May
Buddha Jayanti, the birthday of the Buddha, is celebrated in Lumbini and Kathmandu, and Republic Day falls at the end of the month
September and October
Dashain, the longest and most important festival of the year, runs for about two weeks, and families travel across the country, so roads and hotels are busy and offices close for several days
Late October and November
Tihar, the festival of lights, with lamps in every street, and Chhath after it

Why a festival week costs more

Not for the flying, but for permits, handlers and rooms. During Dashain and Tihar public offices typically close for several days, so a permit is filed well before the holiday.

Flying to Nepal with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat can fly to Nepal in the cabin, but the paperwork starts weeks ahead, and the way home is the harder half.

What Nepal asks for on the way in

Guides for pet owners typically list a 15-digit ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry, further core vaccinations for dogs and cats, and an original veterinary health certificate completed within 10 days of arrival and issued or endorsed by a government vet. A permit is typically not needed for fewer than three animals travelling with the owner, and an animal that meets the conditions is not quarantined.

The same guides send the animal through Tribhuvan International and advise telling the airport veterinary officials in advance. Because the sources are secondary, we confirm the list with the authorities and the handler in writing before the animal is booked.

Britain's rules for the return are stricter. Nepal is not on Britain's list of countries with simple pet-travel rules, and for a dog or a cat coming from such a country Britain requires a Great Britain pet health certificate and a rabies blood test:

  • A rabies vaccination first, then a blood sample taken at least 30 days after it, sent by the vet to an approved laboratory, with a result of 0.5 IU/ml or higher;
  • A wait of three months from the date of the sample before the animal may travel to Britain, and the sample stays valid for as long as the rabies vaccinations are kept up to date;
  • A Great Britain pet health certificate for the journey;
  • For a dog, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain;
  • Quarantine for up to four months if the rules are not met.

The sensible plan is to have the sample taken in Britain, months before departure, so that the three months have run out before the flight back. For a private flight we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

Other destinations, and the general rules for travelling with an animal on a private jet, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a flight the operator has to make anyway, with the cabin vacant, and so it is priced low rather than flown for nothing.

Why empty legs to Nepal are scarce

– Few aircraft fly to Nepal and stay. A jet that delivers a party to Kathmandu usually leaves again within a day or two, so the legs worth looking for run from Nepal towards Britain, the Gulf or India;

– A permit goes with a date, and a leg that moves can mean a fresh application.

A client who can move by a week or two has the best chance. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Nepalese empty legs follows, at roughly 40 percent of a fresh charter:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (London Biggin Hill) - Nepal (Kathmandu) Praetor 600 9 seats £31,100
Nepal (Kathmandu) - UK (London Luton) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £49,650
UK (Birmingham) - Nepal (Kathmandu) Global 6000 13 seats £54,850
Nepal (Kathmandu) - UK (Manchester) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £57,750
UK (Edinburgh) - Nepal (Kathmandu) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £65,950
Nepal (Kathmandu) - UK (London Stansted) Global 7500 14 seats £68,600

Reading the empty-leg prices

– The price covers the whole aircraft, not a seat. A Gulfstream G550 from Kathmandu to Manchester with eight aboard comes to about £7,200 a head;

– The cost to you is flexibility: the date, often the hour, sometimes the airport.

Helicopter charter

In Nepal the helicopter is the way into the mountains, and the main reason a jet client changes aircraft at Kathmandu. These are the names we can give:

Air Dynasty Heli Services
a Kathmandu operator with a hub at Lukla, flying AS350 helicopters on mountain tours, charter, rescue and filming work
Kathmandu and Lukla
Altitude Air
Himalayan tours, charter and medical flights with Airbus H125 helicopters and its own maintenance organisation
Kathmandu
Ghale Group
offers private helicopter flights from Kathmandu to the Everest base camp area with H125 and Bell 407 helicopters, and direct transfers from the jet to the helipad
on request

The times below are our straight-line estimates for a typical turbine helicopter in good visibility, counting a few minutes for start and approach:

Kathmandu to Lukla
the gateway to the Khumbu, 76 nautical miles in a straight line
about 50 min
Kathmandu to the Everest base camp area
the high camp below the mountain, 85 nautical miles in a straight line
about 50 min

Before you plan around a helicopter

At altitude a helicopter carries less, and low cloud or strong afternoon winds can keep it on the ground while a jet lands normally. Lukla is a morning airport, closed by south-westerly winds from mid to late morning, so a mountain flight is planned for the first hours of the day, with a spare day in the programme.

A landing away from an aerodrome needs an authorised site, cleared before we quote, and the operator confirms the payload for the altitude.

Nepalese charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

The six trips below are typical jobs assembled from booking notes with the details changed, so none of them is one named client or one date.

KATHMANDU · THE LOWEST-PRICED WAY IN

Two directors with a week of meetings

London Biggin Hill - Kathmandu, Praetor 600 via Dubai, about 11 h 55 min · 2 pax

The brief had assumed an ultra-long-range jet. A Praetor 600 with one stop in Dubai did the job for far less, and the departure was timed to land well before the customs window closed.

POKHARA · A LAKE AND THE ANNAPURNA RANGE

A family on a ten-day trip

London Biggin Hill - Pokhara, Global 6000 via Dubai, about 10 h 55 min · 6 pax

The handler confirmed customs and the hours at Pokhara in writing, and an alternate at Bhairahawa was named in the plan.

EVEREST BY HELICOPTER · A SPARE DAY

A party of eight with a business week and a mountain day

Manchester - Kathmandu, Gulfstream G550 via Dubai, about 11 h 15 min · 8 pax

Four days of meetings were followed by a morning helicopter flight to the Khumbu, with a second day held in reserve for weather.

LUMBINI · A PILGRIMAGE

A small group bound for the Buddha's birthplace

London Luton - Bhairahawa, Gulfstream G450 via Dubai, about 11 h 30 min · 6 pax

The party chose the airport nearest Lumbini. Winter fog was the risk, so the date avoided the foggy weeks and Kathmandu was the alternate.

PETS · TWO DOGS TO KATHMANDU

A relocation with two dogs

London Farnborough - Kathmandu, Gulfstream G450 via Dubai, about 11 h 45 min · 2 pax and two dogs

The rabies blood samples needed for the way home were taken in Surrey months earlier.

EMPTY LEG · HOMEWARD FROM KATHMANDU

A flexible return after a long stay

Kathmandu - London Luton, Falcon 900LX empty leg via Dubai, about 11 h 55 min · 5 pax

The client gave a window of several days. The fare was about £49,650, roughly 40 percent of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Nepal

1Can a private jet fly from London to Kathmandu nonstop?

Yes, in an ultra-long-range cabin. A Gulfstream G650ER or a Bombardier Global 7500 can fly the planned 4,746 nautical miles without landing, and most other aircraft land once, usually in Dubai.

2How long does a private jet take from the UK to Nepal?

About 9 hours 50 minutes to Kathmandu nonstop in a G650ER, and about 11 hours 55 minutes in a Praetor 600 with a stop in Dubai, including the stop. The customs window printed in the AIP closes at 00:30 local time, so the departure is timed backwards from it.

3How much does a private jet to Nepal cost?

From about £74,100 one way from London Biggin Hill to Kathmandu on a Praetor 600 with a stop in Dubai. Aircraft that fly nonstop cost more, from about £163,400 in a Global 7500. Handling, permit fees and airport charges are quoted on top.

4Which airport should a private jet use in Nepal?

Kathmandu Tribhuvan International is the main choice: a 3,050 metre runway in the AIP, no ILS, and customs and immigration listed from 06:00 to 00:30 local time. Pokhara serves the lakes and the Annapurna range and Bhairahawa serves Lumbini, both with an ILS.

5What permits and visas does a private flight to Nepal need?

The aircraft needs a landing permit from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, which the AIP asks to be requested at least 15 working days before a non-scheduled landing. British passport holders need a visa, usually a visa on arrival that can be pre-filled online up to 15 days ahead.

6Can my dog or cat travel with me to Nepal on a private jet?

Yes, with planning. Nepal typically asks for a microchip, a rabies vaccination given 30 days to 12 months before entry and a veterinary certificate issued within 10 days of arrival, and we confirm the exact papers in writing for your dates. Coming home, Britain treats Nepal as outside its simple pet-travel list, which means a rabies blood test, a three-month wait and a Great Britain pet health certificate.
