Private jet charter in Samoa

Samoa lies almost on the opposite side of the globe from Britain: the direct line is about 8,827 nautical miles, and a private jet flies it in two long legs with a single stop in the United States. Private Jets UK plans the crossing, the landing permit and the handling at Faleolo, the one airport on the islands where a long-range jet can land. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Samoa is a small destination with a thin aviation infrastructure, so we say plainly below what is confirmed, what is listed in directories and what we ask the authorities in writing.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Samoa depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, a Bombardier Global 6000 to Faleolo International Airport at Apia with one technical stop at Seattle Boeing Field, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Samoa?

The straight line from Luton to Apia is about 8,827 nautical miles, while the longest-range business jets are published at 7,500 to 7,700. The route therefore breaks at Seattle: 4,303 nautical miles across the Atlantic and Canada, then 4,724 over the Pacific, 200 more than the direct line. Samoa keeps UTC+13 all year with no summer time, thirteen hours ahead of Britain in winter and twelve in summer. Times are westbound and count flying time only:

London to Apia, Global 6000 via Seattle
9,027 nautical miles from Luton in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Boeing Field
about 20 h 05 min plus the stop
Apia to London, Global 6000 via Seattle
9,027 nautical miles, helped on the Atlantic by the prevailing westerly winds
about 17 h plus the stop
Seattle to Apia, the Pacific leg
4,724 nautical miles of open ocean, with Honolulu the usual fallback
about 10 h 30 min
Apia to Pago Pago, Citation CJ3+
85 nautical miles to American Samoa, gate to gate
about 40 min

The day that goes missing

A Global 6000 that leaves Luton at eight in the morning in winter spends about 20 hours 5 minutes in the air and an hour in Seattle, and touches down at Apia at about six in the evening on the following calendar day, because Samoa is thirteen hours ahead. Daylight matters for the drive along the coast, so an earlier departure is the better plan.

The way home returns the day. Leaving Apia at eight in the morning, the same aircraft flies about 17 hours plus the stop and lands in Britain at about one in the afternoon of the same calendar day in winter, because the clocks fall back thirteen hours.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Three things worth knowing about these figures

– From Luton a Global 6000 with the stop at Seattle starts at £240,300. A Global 7500 on the same routing comes to £305,500, and a Gulfstream G550 from Edinburgh to £244,250;

– The Seattle to Apia leg of 4,724 nautical miles sits within the published range of a Global 6000, yet a headwind can still decide the question. When the margin is thin, the crew adds a landing at Honolulu, which brings the total to about 9,083 nautical miles. The G550, G650ER and Global 7500 carry more reserve on this leg;

– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Samoa and to its neighbours

There is not much of a domestic network to price. Samoa consists of two main islands, Upolu and Savai'i, with the capital on Upolu, and only Faleolo has a runway that suits a jet. The other airfields are short strips used by Twin Otters, so the useful jet sectors from Apia go abroad. The table shows three of them:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way
Apia - Pago Pago (American Samoa)
85 nm / 157 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7
about 40 min from £5,300
Apia - Nadi (Fiji)
679 nm / 1,258 km
Citation XLS+
up to 9
about 2 h 05 min from £11,950
Apia - Auckland (New Zealand)
1,623 nm / 3,006 km
Challenger 350
up to 9
about 4 h 05 min from £31,650

Two things worth knowing about the sectors from Apia

– Pago Pago is only 30 to 40 minutes away, yet American Samoa runs its own entry system. The territory asks foreign visitors to apply for an entry permit through its legal affairs department at least 72 hours ahead, and the airport lists a prior-permission requirement of 24 hours for non-scheduled arrivals. We handle both before the tail number is released;

– Nadi and Auckland are the practical neighbours. Both are international airports with long runways, and a party that wants Fiji or New Zealand after Samoa can continue on the same jet, since the long-range aircraft is already in position.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h

Large jet (Legacy 600)£4,900 - 5,800/h
Long-haul jet (Global 5000, G550, Falcon 7X)£5,800 - 8,800/h
Business linersfrom £10,300/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. For Samoa the choice follows the distance:

Turboprops

Not for the crossing. They belong on the short island hops once you are in the Pacific, and the Twin Otters that serve Samoa's own strips are a different class again.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Mid-size jets

Regional aircraft here, for Pago Pago, Nadi or Auckland. From Britain they would need several extra stops, so we do not offer them for the whole journey.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Ultra-long range

The class that makes the trip practical. The Global 6000 is the entry point for the Seattle routing; the others add cabin size and fuel margin.

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h
Bombardier Global 7500 · 14 seatsfrom £8,300/h

Business aviation airports in Samoa

Faleolo is the answer, and the only answer, for a long-haul jet. It has the 3,000 metre runway, the instrument approach and the border officers, and the other fields are strips for turboprops. We tell clients plainly that the services are modest: the airport handles scheduled traffic from Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, Nadi and Honolulu, and a private jet fits into that rhythm. The table lists the fields on either side:

Airport Ground How it operates
Faleolo International
APW / NSFA
Northwest coast of Upolu, listed at 25 to 40 km west of Apia The gateway and the only airport we plan a long-haul jet into. One runway, 08/26, asphalt, 3,000 by 45 metres, with an ILS on the 08 end, high-intensity lights, fire category 8 and no slots required according to directories. Jet A-1 is listed and avgas is not. The apron is small: one directory gives room for two heavy or three medium aircraft
Handling
Listed: Oceania Aviation; flight support companies
At the airport There is no business aviation terminal of the Farnborough kind. Directories list Oceania Aviation as a ground handler, and international trip-support companies offer marshalling, steps, power, catering and access to the VIP area of the terminal. We appoint the handler with the permit request, not after it
Customs and immigration
Listed on site
Arrival hall of the terminal Faleolo is listed as an airport of entry with customs, and officers cover the scheduled arrivals. The hours for a private arrival, especially at night, are something we confirm in writing, because the directories disagree about whether the airport is open around the clock
Fagali'i
FGI / NSFI
East of Apia on the north coast of Upolu Apia's second airport, with an asphalt runway of roughly 670 to 710 metres depending on the source. Samoa Airways flies Twin Otters between here and Pago Pago. It is a place for a small turboprop, not for the jet that crossed the Pacific
Savai'i strips
Maota (MXS), Asau (NSAU)
Maota is about 15 nautical miles from Faleolo, Asau about 41 Maota has a 700 metre asphalt runway near the ferry port of Salelologa and Samoa Airways flies there from Apia. Asau is a further strip run by the airport authority. Neither is for a business jet; most visitors cross by ferry
Seattle Boeing Field
BFI / KBFI
4,724 nautical miles from Apia Our stop on the way out. The main runway is 10,007 by 200 feet, the airport is open around the clock and is an airport of entry, and three FBOs are listed. Everyone on board clears United States customs here
Pago Pago, Nadi and Auckland
PPG / NSTU, NAN / NFFN, AKL / NZAA
85 nautical miles to Pago Pago, 679 to Nadi, 1,623 to Auckland The realistic diversion fields for a heavy jet if Faleolo is closed. Pago Pago has a 3,048 metre runway, Nadi one of about 3,200 metres. Pago Pago is the nearest, Nadi and Auckland the larger international airports

Permit: seven days or more

The Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure is listed as the authority for a non-scheduled flight, with a request at least seven days before departure and approval in hand before the aircraft leaves its last port. We plan for two weeks.

Papers: operator and aircraft

The request lists the air operator certificate, the registration certificate, the radio licence, the crew documents and the contract for the flight, and the original documents can be inspected.

Parking is limited

With room for two heavy or three medium aircraft listed on the apron, a long stay needs agreeing in advance. The alternative is to drop the party and fly the jet on to Nadi or Auckland until the return.

Arriving from Britain: passports, entry rules and what to declare

Samoa is an independent country with its own border rules. A private flight from London arrives as an international flight, lands at Faleolo and is cleared by the customs and immigration officers there. The rules are short, and the strictest part is biosecurity.

Passport
valid for at least six months after the date you arrive in Samoa, for every passenger, children included
check before booking
Visa
no visa is needed for a visit of up to 60 days; a longer stay, work or study needs an entry permit from Samoa
no visa, 60 days
Onward ticket
you may be asked for an onward or return ticket; on a private flight that is the itinerary we issue
agreed beforehand
ESTA for the US stop
an approved ESTA or a visa is needed for the landing at Seattle, where everyone on board clears the United States
apply before departure
Cash and goods
cash or travellers cheques worth 20,000 tala or more are declared, and strict rules cover plant and animal products, firearms, drugs and pets
declare both

The way home, and the yellow fever certificate

A yellow fever certificate is required only for travellers arriving from a country on the transmission risk list, so a party that adds a stop in such a country carries the certificate.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. The stop at Seattle is a second clearance, this time out of the United States.

Getting from the airport to Apia and beyond

Faleolo is at the western end of Upolu, so every transfer starts with the coast road. The distances in directories differ, which is why we ask the handler for the vehicle and the time on the day:

Apia
the capital and the harbour on the north coast of Upolu, with most of the hotels, restaurants and offices; the road from the airport is listed at about 45 minutes
about 45 min
Fagali'i
the second airport, on the same coast east of the capital, for a Twin Otter to Pago Pago
by road via Apia
Savai'i by ferry
the larger island lies west of Upolu; the ferry crossing is about 90 minutes, and the Twin Otter from Apia to Maota is the quicker way
about 90 min
Maota
the strip on Savai'i, about 15 nautical miles from Faleolo, ten minutes south of the ferry town of Salelologa
about 15 nm

Samoa: what our clients go for

Samoa has a little over 205,000 people, about three-quarters of them on Upolu and some 42,000 on Savai'i. Samoan and English are both official, the currency is the tala, and the highest point, Mount Silisili on Savai'i, rises to 1,858 metres. Tourism provides roughly a fifth of the economy, and the visitors come mainly from New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

The draws are natural: the To Sua Ocean Trench, a sinkhole you swim in, the beaches at Lalomanu and Saleapaga, the Piula Cave Pool and the Papaseea sliding rocks on Upolu, and the blowholes and the Saleaula lava fields on Savai'i. In Apia there is Robert Louis Stevenson's villa and his grave, and a Baha'i House of Worship at Tiapapata.

The case for a private flight is time and control. The scheduled network is a short list of routes from Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, Nadi and Honolulu, so reaching Samoa from Britain is a long chain of connections. A private aircraft flies on the day you choose, and the same jet can take the party on to Fiji or New Zealand.

The year in Samoa: dry winter, wet summer

The temperature barely moves, at an average of about 26 degrees, and the seasons are separated by rain:

June to September
the drier season, with August the driest month at about 113 millimetres on average, and the busiest weeks for visitors
dry, most popular
December and January
the second peak, with Christmas and New Year; January is also the wettest month, at close to 490 millimetres on average
busy, wet
November to April
the main rainy season, although heavy rain can fall in any month and Apia averages nearly 3,000 millimetres a year
wet, humid

Weather is a planning problem, not an exception

Cyclones are among the natural disasters that disrupt tourism in Samoa, and with a single jet-capable runway the diversion is a long flight to Pago Pago, Nadi or Auckland. In the wet months we keep the return date flexible. The figures on this page, from £240,300 one way, describe an ordinary week.

The Samoa calendar: Independence, Teuila and White Sunday

A few national occasions fill the hotels and the roads of Apia:

1 June
Independence is celebrated on this date, although it took effect on 1 January; the date falls in the drier season
September
The Teuila Festival, about a week in Apia, opens with a floral parade and Siva Afi fire knife dancing, with a Chief's Fiafia show, craft fairs, tattooing demonstrations and the Miss Samoa pageant
Second Sunday of October
White Sunday, a national holiday with the Monday after it, when children lead the church service, wear white and are served first at the family table
December and January
Christmas and New Year, a peak for families who come home to Samoa and for visitors from New Zealand and Australia

What a holiday does to a flight plan

A public holiday shuts the offices that sign the paperwork, and a festival week fills the hotels around the venue. On White Sunday weekend the villages are quiet and the transfers are slow. We book the handler and the transfer with the flight.

Flying to Samoa with a dog or a cat

A pet can reach Samoa, but not on an impulse. Every dog and cat needs an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, applied for before travel, and an animal that arrives without one, or without the right papers, can be seized, treated, sent back or destroyed at the importer's expense.

The facts to read before you book

The published list of approved origins is American Samoa, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and the United States. Animals from other countries, the United Kingdom among them, are listed as considered when the permit is applied for, and one guide says that animals from other countries need six months of consecutive residence in an approved country.

A dog from Australia must be treated against tapeworm within 21 days of departure, against roundworm and for ticks, fleas and lice within four days, and vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus. A government vet certifies this within four days of departure. Those conditions come from an earlier permit and may change.

  • A microchip of the ISO type is expected, the rabies vaccination must be current, and a rabies antibody test may be required for an animal from outside the approved list;
  • The animal enters at Faleolo, and each dog or cat is inspected by quarantine officers on arrival;
  • The notices are written for air freight, so whether the animal may travel in the cabin of a private aircraft is something we ask the Ministry in writing.

The way home would be British, and it is stricter. A dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before it lands in Britain. We have not found Samoa among the places named in the gov.uk lists of countries, and a pet from a country outside the lists needs a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the last 10 days, a rabies vaccination after the age of 12 weeks, a blood test at least 30 days later, a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an approved laboratory and a wait of three months from the sample. An animal that does not meet the rules can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

We confirm in writing the airports and the paperwork for the animal. Rules for other species are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the way to Samoa they are rare, and we say so rather than promise. A jet that has delivered a party to Apia usually flies home empty, and a jet sent out empty to collect guests is the other source.

A client with an open date has a far better chance of a match, because the whole aircraft goes at about two-fifths of a fresh charter. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. The table gives an idea of the figures:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (London Luton) - Apia Global 6000 13 seats £100,950
Apia - UK (London Farnborough) Global 6000 13 seats £101,150
UK (London Biggin Hill) - Apia Global 6000 13 seats £101,300
Apia - UK (Edinburgh) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £102,600
UK (Manchester) - Apia Gulfstream G550 16 seats £104,300
Apia - UK (Glasgow) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £115,350

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. On the Luton sector in a Global 6000 an empty leg would cost about £100,950, which is a guide and not an offer, since the operator owns the date;

– A match on this corridor needs weeks of notice rather than days.

Helicopter charter and air tours

We found no helicopter operator with a published base in Samoa. One broker guide lists helicopter transfers among the services at Faleolo, without naming a company, and Samoa Airways flies Twin Otters between Upolu, Savai'i and American Samoa, which also gives a view of the islands.

A party that wants a helicopter, for the lava fields or a resort transfer, gets a written answer from us on the operator, the aircraft and the landing site before we quote, and we say so if the answer is that none is available.

Samoa charters from the booking notes: two typical trips

Two typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

DECEMBER · A FAMILY OF FIVE

Christmas in Upolu

Luton - Apia via Seattle, Global 6000, about 20 h 05 min plus the stop · 5 pax

The family left in the morning so that the aircraft landed before dusk. Passports were checked for six months beyond the return, and ESTA approvals were in place for Seattle.

ONWARD · PAGO PAGO · FOUR GUESTS

Across the date line in half an hour

Apia - Pago Pago, Citation CJ3+, about 40 min · 4 pax

The party flew on a mid-size jet after the long-range aircraft had been parked. The entry permit for American Samoa was applied for well ahead, and they landed on the calendar day before the one they left.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Samoa

1How long does it take to fly to Samoa by private jet?

About 20 hours 5 minutes of flying from London in a Global 6000, plus about an hour on the ground at Seattle. The return takes about 17 hours of flying.

2How much does a private jet to Samoa cost?

From about £240,300 one way from London Luton in a Bombardier Global 6000 with one technical stop at Seattle Boeing Field. A Global 7500 from Luton comes to about £305,500. Air Passenger Duty is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in Samoa?

Faleolo International (APW, NSFA) on the northwest coast of Upolu, with a 3,000 metre runway and customs on site. It is the only airport in the country that suits a long-range jet. The other airfields have runways of about 700 metres.

No visa for up to 60 days. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival, and an onward ticket may be asked for. The aircraft needs permission for a non-scheduled flight, listed as requested at least seven days ahead, and an ESTA or a visa is needed for the landing at Seattle.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Samoa?

It is possible only with an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the conditions for animals from Britain are decided at the permit stage. The way home needs the British rules for the country of origin. We ask the authorities in writing before the booking.

6When is the best time to fly to Samoa, and how early should I book?

June to September is the drier season and the busiest, with December and January a second peak. November to April is wet. Book as soon as the dates are known, since the permit alone takes a week or more.
