Private jet charter in Chania
From a London airfield a light jet reaches the west of Crete in just under four hours, which puts the Venetian harbour of Chania, the Samaria Gorge and the beaches of Elafonissi and Balos inside a single day of leaving Britain. Private Jets UK plans the charter around the permit, the slot and the road at the far end, and not only around the flight. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Chania airport lies about 14 km from the old town on the Akrotiri peninsula and shares its two long runways with the Souda air base, which is why a private flight here needs more notice than one to most Greek airports.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Chania depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Chania?
Just under four hours from Biggin Hill, a little over four and a half from Glasgow, and two hours to add to the clock on landing, because Crete is two hours ahead of Britain all year. At 1,460 to 1,756 nautical miles the sector is long for a business jet, so the cabin matters more than the badge on the tail. A light jet is fine for a short passenger list, and from five or six people upwards a midsize cabin is the better quote. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you land at Chania at about one in the afternoon local time. Passport control and customs are on the airport, the old town is about 14 km away, and a table on the Venetian harbour by half past two is realistic. Add the drive to the British airfield and the journey from central London comes to roughly six and a half hours, against a long day of two scheduled flights and a change in Athens.
Light jet or midsize: the question that decides the quote
– Up to four or five people with soft bags, a light jet can fly London to Chania nonstop, and it is the cheapest private option. With more people, more luggage or a strong headwind it may need a fuel stop, which costs an hour and a landing fee. We ask for the passenger and bag count before quoting a light jet;
– For most families we quote a midsize cabin next to it. A Latitude or a Praetor 600 swallows a week of beach bags, a pushchair and a cool box, and four hours in a cabin you can stand up in feels shorter on the way home;
– Large aircraft make sense for ten or more, for a party that wants the same jet for the whole stay, or when Chania is the first leg of something longer. Dubai is about 1,791 nautical miles from Chania, which a Global 6000 flies without a stop.

Prices for the private jet flights to Chania
Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Chania Ioannis Daskalogiannis Airport. The light-jet rows are priced for a short passenger list; July, August and Orthodox Easter tend to sit above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

Crete and the Cyclades from the air: when a short hop beats the road
Heraklion is 54 nautical miles from Chania, which a PC-12 covers in well under an hour against about two hours by road, but the real use of the short sectors is the Cyclades. Santorini (86 nm) and Mykonos (133 nm) are quick flights, yet a broker guide documents a 40-minute maximum stay under prior permission at both airports during the busiest daytime hours, so the aircraft that takes you there usually cannot wait and is planned back to a base. That is a reason to book the island leg and the return together, and to think of the jet as a taxi between airports and not as a car left outside the hotel.
Before you accept a Greek quote
– Which airport, and who handles it. Handling is mandatory at Chania, and a quote that does not name the handler is one that will change;
– How the permission is sequenced. At a military airfield the landing permit takes at least four working days for a private aircraft, prior permission comes first and the slot, which can be requested up to 14 days ahead, must match it exactly;
– What happens if the plan moves. An unused slot has to be cancelled at least 12 hours ahead, and flying outside the approved window can draw a penalty, so a change of date is a call to us and not to the pilot.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.

Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Chania:
Light jets, for a small party
Four hours in the air is the upper limit of what a light jet does comfortably. Two couples with soft bags will be happy; add golf clubs, a nanny or a headwind and the answer changes, so the load is checked before a light jet is quoted.
Midsize, the usual choice for a villa week
A real baggage hold, a cabin where you can stand, and range that leaves a margin when Chania is busy and the aircraft is asked to hold. Most families and most small groups end up here.
Super-midsize and large
For ten people travelling together, for a wedding party or a family with staff, and for itineraries that continue from the west of Crete to the Gulf instead of coming home empty.
Turboprops
Crete to Santorini, Athens or the Heraklion side of the island takes under an hour in a PC-12 or a King Air, and the saving against a jet is large on a sector that short. Chania's long runway puts no limit on either.
Helicopters
For the last stretch from the apron to a villa or a beach hotel, and for the crossing to the Cyclades. The landing site is agreed with its owner before the quote is issued.

This is a small part of what is available. Chania is far from the busiest business jet bases, and in July and August the airline traffic leaves little room on the apron, so the aircraft often positions in from Athens, Italy or Turkey. That positioning is where the better price, or the worse one, comes from, and it is the first thing we look at.

Business aviation airports in Chania
Chania takes almost every trip to the west. The other airport that matters is the one on the far side of the island, and a few places that people ask about have no airfield at all, so it helps to know the picture before a quote arrives.
| Airport | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Chania, Ioannis Daskalogiannis CHQ / LGSA |
The airport for the west of Crete. It stands on the Akrotiri peninsula about 14 km from Chania at 149 m above sea level, with two parallel runways of about 3,350 m, so length is never the question. It is a joint civil and military airfield, home to the Souda air base, and Fraport Greece runs the civil side. Listed as open round the clock with customs and immigration on site, handling mandatory, summer slot coordination and prior permission for the military base. Signature Aviation lists an FBO here. Chania is also on the Greek list of entry points for pets coming from outside the EU |
| Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis HER / LGIR |
The other jet airport on the island, about 140 km east by road, and the better landing point for Knossos, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. It is not one of the military airfields to which the four-working-day lead time applies in the broker guides we use, which makes it the fallback when a Chania permit cannot be obtained in time, at the price of a drive of about two hours to the west. We compare the two before quoting if the stay is in the middle of the island |
| Rethymno, Sfakia, Elafonissi and Balos | None of them has an airfield. Rethymno is about 70 km east of Chania, Balos 55 to 60 km west, Elafonissi roughly 75 km south-west and Chora Sfakion on the south coast sits across the White Mountains. Chania is the airport for all four, and a helicopter is the way to shorten the drive once the landing site is agreed |
| Santorini and Mykonos JTR / LGSR, JMK / LGMK |
Not alternatives but the islands many clients fly on to. Parking at both is tight, with a documented 40-minute maximum stay under prior permission in the busiest daytime hours, and the aircraft from Chania usually positions away and returns. We plan the return leg together with the outbound one |
Four points settle most Chania arrivals:
Choose the handler
Handling is mandatory at Chania. Signature Aviation lists an FBO here and deals with the slot and the military base's prior permission for its customers, and other agents can be appointed by the operator. Quotes differ, so we ask which handler the operator will use and put the name in the quote.
Hours, slots and the military base
Two airport directories list Chania as open round the clock, and the tower as 24 hours, while a third gives the airport hours as 05:30 to midnight, so a night arrival is confirmed in writing first. In summer the slot is coordinated at the highest level, the permission has to be in place before the slot is requested, and the aircraft must keep within 15 minutes of it. Because Souda air base shares the field, private aircraft need a landing permit on top.
Border and passport
Greece is in Schengen and Britain is not, so passport control happens at Chania itself, and customs is listed with the airport at all hours. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued under ten years ago and valid for three months after the planned departure. Some travellers are asked for a photograph and fingerprints at the EU entry system.
Car, and which end of the island
The airport is about 14 km from Chania on the Akrotiri peninsula. Balos is 55 to 60 km away, Elafonissi about 75 km and Rethymno some 70 km, so give us the hotel or villa as well as the flight date. For the east of the island Heraklion may be the better airport.

Border, passport and the permit for a private aircraft
The border is dealt with once, at the first landing. Chania is an airport of entry with customs and immigration listed for all hours, you arrive from outside Schengen, and from that moment a flight on to Heraklion, Athens or a Cycladic island is a domestic leg with no second passport control. The extra step at Chania is the military one: the base asks for a landing permit for private aircraft at least four working days ahead, on top of prior permission 48 hours before arrival, and the handler files both. We start the paperwork the day the booking is confirmed.
For the flight home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and any passenger who needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the UK must hold it before boarding. British and Irish citizens are exempt. The agent who handled the arrival files the departure paperwork too.

From the apron to the Venetian harbour
Chania is the second city of Crete, with about 111,000 people in the municipality, and the old town is the reason most clients come. The Venetian harbour dates from the fourteenth century and is closed at one end by a lighthouse, usually called the Egyptian lighthouse; on the quay stands the domed Küçük Hasan Mosque, and along the water the Venetian shipyards. The old town is divided into quarters, among them Topanas, Splantzia and Kasteli, and the Firkas fortress at the harbour mouth houses the Maritime Museum of Crete. The lanes are narrow and made for walking, so the car stops at the edge and the rest is done on foot. Hotels and villas are scattered around the old town, along the beaches of the Chania bay and in the villages of the Apokoronas hills.

about 140 km, and the reason the east is flown to Heraklionabout 2 hours
Elafonissi, Balos, Samaria and Sfakia: the west by the day
This is what the 4-hour flight is for. The west of Crete has four great set pieces, and each one has a logistics problem that a broker should solve before the aircraft leaves Britain.
Elafonissi is the beach of pink sand at the south-western corner, about 75 km from Chania. In fine weather you can wade across the shallows to the island, which is a protected nature reserve; the colour comes from tiny pigmented organisms deposited by the tide and the waves. The road is narrow near the villages and through the Topolia Gorge, and a guide advises leaving Chania by eight in the morning to stay ahead of the coaches that make the same trip. A private driver in a comfortable car, who knows when to leave, is worth more here than at any other stop.
Balos lies on the Gramvousa peninsula, 55 to 60 km from Chania, and the lagoon is the picture on half of the island's postcards. It sits inside a protected area. By car the road is paved as far as Kaliviani and unpaved for about 8 km after it, and the car park above the beach fills in July and August, so you need to be there before nine; the walk down takes 20 to 30 minutes and the climb back 30 to 45. A boat from Kissamos is the alternative, and for a party with small children or elderly guests it is often the easier one. A helicopter landing at either Balos or Elafonissi should not be assumed, because both are protected sites, and any plan that includes one is checked with the operator first.
The Samaria Gorge is the long walk. It opens on 1 May and closes on 31 October, and the park is open from seven in the morning to three in the afternoon. The gorge is 16 km from Xyloskalo to the sea at Agia Roumeli, with its narrowest point, the Iron Gates, only about four metres wide between walls of nearly 300 metres. The walk takes five to seven hours, so a private client starts early and does not plan another engagement for the day. From Agia Roumeli a ferry runs to Sfakia (Chora Sfakion) or west to Sougia and Paleochora, and the driver, who has taken the car round, meets you there. The car waiting at the far end is the part that an independent walker finds hardest to arrange.
Sfakia is the south-western coast, a mountainous district of proud local history, where the airport's namesake, the rebel Daskalogiannis, was born at Anopolis. The road from Chania runs through Vryses, across the Askifou plateau and the White Mountains to Chora Sfakion, which is about an hour and a quarter by car. The coastal villages beyond it are not linked by road. Loutro is car-free and reached only by boat, and Frangokastello, to the east, has a Venetian fortress on a long sandy beach. A day there is usually a boat or a short walk, and the car brings you back for dinner.
Villas and the Akrotiri peninsula
Chania's character as a villa destination comes from its geography. The rentals with private pools cluster in the Apokoronas villages such as Kalyves, Almyrida and Georgioupoli, along the north coast between Chania and Rethymno, and around the airport on the Akrotiri peninsula, where the Stavros beach is the one featured in the film Zorba the Greek. The peninsula also has the monasteries of Agia Triada, a seventeenth-century foundation of two Venetian monks who became Orthodox, and Gouverneto, a fortress-like complex some 5 km further north, and the tombs of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophoklis at a site overlooking Chania. A villa in the Akrotiri district is typically only minutes from the apron; one in Apokoronas is typically about half an hour away.
Before you take a villa
– Tell us the village, not just 'Chania'. The airport, the old town and the Apokoronas coast are three different journeys, and the car or helicopter is booked for the right one;
– Ask about the road. Many villa lanes are narrow and unmade, and a saloon car may be the wrong answer; we book the vehicle the owner recommends;
– Arrival day matters. Villa changeovers cluster on Saturdays and Sundays in summer, exactly when the airport is busiest, so a Friday or a Monday arrival is easier to slot and usually easier to price.
Flying to Crete with a dog or a cat
Greece asks for no more than any other EU country, and Chania is on the Greek list of authorised entry points for animals arriving from outside the EU, so a pet can land here directly. An animal in the cabin of a private jet has a far kinder journey than one in an airliner's hold. What matters is the order of the paperwork, because the certificate has a ten-day life from the day it is issued and the return rules to Britain have their own clock.

What the rules ask for:
- An ISO microchip, fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination and not after it;
- A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before travel;
- An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued for each trip and valid for ten days for entry into the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate;
- A declaration that the animal is not being moved for sale or rehoming;
- No more than five animals per traveller, presented at an authorised point of entry, and Chania is on the Greek list;
- For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt.
What catches owners out on a Crete trip
– A trip of five days or less changes the order. The tapeworm treatment can then be given before you leave Britain, provided the dog lands home at least 24 hours and no more than 120 hours after it. On a longer stay in a villa it becomes a vet appointment in Chania, booked towards the end of the week;
– A pet passport issued in England, Scotland or Wales cannot be used to enter the EU. The certificate has to be a fresh one for each trip, and a lapsed rabies vaccination during the stay puts the return at risk;
– A helicopter operator has to agree to an animal separately, and a long drive to Balos or Elafonissi in August heat is no place for a dog, so settle the transfers before the quote and not at the aircraft door.
Cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.
The Chania calendar: a gorge season and a long summer
Western Crete is driven by two things: the opening of the gorge and the arrival of the holiday flights. The Samaria Gorge is open from 1 May to 31 October, so walkers define the shoulder months, and the summer peak is the time when the airport carries close to four million passengers a year through a terminal that was built for far fewer. Winter is quiet, and the real question is which week, not which aircraft.
Why August costs more
Partly the flying, and mostly the system around it. Chania is slot-coordinated in summer, a joint military field adds a permit the airlines do not need, and the aircraft that serve Crete come in from Athens, Italy and Turkey rather than waiting on the apron. Where the Greek island airports fill up, brokers note that alternates such as Chania fill by Friday, so a Saturday arrival is the hardest day of the week. Booked two or three weeks before 15 August a Chania charter can usually still be done, at a higher price and sometimes in a different aircraft. Booked two months earlier it is straightforward, and outside the peak it can often be arranged within the week, provided the permit window is respected.
Ways to bring the Chania price down
- Arrive on a Thursday, Friday or Monday. The Saturday changeover is the hardest day for slots and for aircraft, and an off-peak day can save a repositioning;
- Choose May, June or the second half of September. The gorge is open, the sea is warm and the airport has room, and the permit and slot are easier to secure than around 15 August;
- Take the midsize unless the party is large. A Latitude or a Praetor 600 has the range and the hold this trip needs and prices well below a heavy jet, and the money saved pays for the driver who takes you to Balos before the car park fills.
Types of flights
Chania sells itself as a leisure destination, but the leisure is of a particular kind: long stays, big parties and a local geography that rewards planning.
- Villa weeks in Apokoronas and on the Akrotiri peninsula, with the whole family and often a dog;
- Weddings and anniversary parties in the old town or at a resort, with guests arriving on one aircraft;
- Sailing holidays and yacht charters, where the boat waits in a harbour near Chania and the crew meets the guests at the airport;
- Walkers who come for the gorge season in May, June and September;
- Combined Crete and Cyclades itineraries, using Chania as the start or the finish;
- Onward trips to Athens, Malta, Istanbul or the Gulf, with Chania as the first sector of a longer route.
A word on waiting. A jet that stays on the apron costs standing time, but parking on a Greek island in peak season cannot be taken for granted, and at a military field it is also subject to the base. For a stay of three or four nights the cheaper plan is often to let the aircraft position away and book the return as a second flight. We quote both ways, and which one wins depends on the month.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. The summer rhythm of Crete makes them frequent, and it helps to know what produces them.
Where Chania empty legs come from
– Changeover days. A party that flew out on a Saturday leaves an aircraft that goes home empty the same day or on the Sunday, and brokers report empty legs are often available in summer and the shoulder months;
– Easter. Aircraft arrive for the Orthodox Easter weekend and return a few days later, leaving outbound legs for whoever is flying home;
– Island rotation. Operators moving aircraft between Athens, the Cyclades and Crete leave short, cheap legs in both directions during the season.
A client who can name three or four days has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening, because the operator owns the date and the hour and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Chania match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter
In western Crete a helicopter is for the last stretch and for the sea, not for the old town, which is a walk. The roads are slow and the coastline is long, so the places where rotary flight changes the day are the villas on the hills, the Cyclades and the mainland.
a private helicopter transfer is offered from the airport, priced as a charter and not as a tourabout 45 minutes
flown over open water to the Cyclades, with the aircraft staying on the island or returningabout 1 h 15 min
for a client who wants to arrive in the capital by helicopter rather than by jetabout 1 h 30 min
Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A hotel pad or a villa lawn has to be confirmed with the owner and the operator before we quote, and the protected beaches at Balos and Elafonissi are not places to assume a landing;
– Chania shares the sky with a military base. Helicopter movements near the airport are coordinated, and the pickup point at the airport is agreed in advance rather than on the apron;
– Weight and weather decide the schedule. Luggage is limited, a strong summer wind can delay a sea crossing on a day when the jet lands without trouble, and for August and Easter the helicopter is booked together with the jet or there may be none.
The machines on this ground are the Airbus H130 and H135 for hotel and villa transfers, the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted and the AgustaWestland AW139 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Chania charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.
VILLA WEEK · APOKORONAS
Eight people and a house with a pool
Luton - Chania and return, Praetor 600, about 4 h 00 min each way · 8 pax
The family wanted a villa in the hills above the north coast and had the luggage of a party that stays ten nights. A light jet would not have carried it, so the quote started at midsize. The aircraft positioned away after landing and came back for the return, which cost less than waiting, and the villa agent met the cars at the airport so that the children were in the pool before the first lunch.
WALKERS · THE GORGE
A day in the Samaria Gorge
Farnborough - Chania and return, Phenom 300E, about 4 h 00 min each way · 4 pax
Four friends flew out in the last week of May for the gorge. The driver left Chania before seven, dropped them at the trailhead and took the car round to Sfakia while they walked, and the ferry from Agia Roumeli brought them to the quay where the car was waiting. That one arrangement, the car at the far end, is the part an independent walker finds hardest to organise.
A DOG ON BOARD
A week with two spaniels
London City - Chania and return, Citation CJ3+, about 4 h 15 min each way · 3 pax + 2 dogs
The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and for a week-long stay the tapeworm treatment was booked with a vet in Chania for the last full day, in the window of 24 to 120 hours before the flight home. The dogs were in the cabin and Chania is on the Greek list of entry points, so the paperwork was checked once, at the airport.
THE PERMIT · FOUR WORKING DAYS
A request that came in on Wednesday
Southampton - Chania, Praetor 600, about 4 h 00 min · 6 pax
The group wanted to land the following Monday, which left fewer than four working days for the landing permit that the base asks for from private aircraft. We filed at once, but moved the flight by a day to leave a margin, and kept a Heraklion landing as a fallback in case the permit did not arrive in time. It came through, and the fallback was never used.
ISLAND LUNCH · HELICOPTER
Santorini for lunch and back for dinner
Chania - Santorini and return, helicopter, about 45 minutes each way · 4 pax
A day in the busy part of July. Taking the jet would have meant a slot and a 40-minute maximum stay at Santorini, so the party went by helicopter from the airport, lunched on the caldera and flew back for dinner on the Venetian harbour. The helicopter and the jet were booked at one time, and the pickup point at the airport was agreed in advance.
EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING
A jet already going your way
Chania - London Luton, Citation Latitude empty leg, about 4 h 05 min · 3 pax
The aircraft had brought a family out on the Saturday changeover and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the London fields.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Chania
1How long is a private jet flight from London to Chania?
About 3 hours 55 minutes from Biggin Hill in a Phenom 300E, covering roughly 1,460 nautical miles, and around 4 hours from Farnborough, Luton or Southampton. From Bristol or Birmingham allow 4 hours 15 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow 4 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 40 minutes. Crete is two hours ahead of Britain, so a departure at seven in the morning lands at about one in the afternoon local time.
2How much does a private jet to Chania cost?
From about £18,700 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill with up to five on board, and £19,000 from Farnborough. A midsize Praetor 600 or Citation Latitude with eight passengers runs £24,950 to £31,150 from English airfields, and from Scotland allow £33,500 to £34,000. July, August and Orthodox Easter tend to price above these figures.
3Should I fly to Chania or to Heraklion?
Chania (CHQ / LGSA) for a stay in the west: Chania itself, Apokoronas, Rethymno, Sfakia, Elafonissi and Balos. Heraklion is the island's capital and its main airport, and the better choice for Knossos, Elounda and the east, about 140 km away by road. Chania has two parallel runways of roughly 3,350 m, customs on the airport and a Signature FBO, but it is shared with Souda air base, so a private aircraft needs a landing permit applied for at least four working days ahead.
4When should I book a private jet to Chania?
In the quiet months a few days is possible, but never less than the four working days the base needs for a landing permit. For July, August, the 15 August holiday and Orthodox Easter allow at least two to three weeks, because summer slots at Chania are coordinated, prior permission comes first and the slot request, which can be made up to 14 days ahead, has to match it exactly.
5How far are Balos, Elafonissi and the Samaria Gorge from Chania?
Balos is 55 to 60 km away, about 1.5 to 2 hours by car including roughly 8 km of unpaved road, and the car park fills in July and August. Elafonissi is about 75 km, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours. The Samaria Gorge starts at Xyloskalo, about 1.5 hours from Chania, and is open from 1 May to 31 October. The walk to Agia Roumeli is 5 to 7 hours and ends with a ferry to Sfakia, so the car is arranged to meet you at the other end.
6Can I take my dog to Crete on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Chania is on the Greek list of entry points for animals arriving from outside the EU. You need a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of entering the EU. For the return, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain, and on a trip of five days or less it can be given before you leave.
