What the clock says on arrival
Leave Biggin Hill at nine in the morning in British summer and the wheels touch down in Bishkek after nine at night. That is a late supper and a bed, not a meeting. Nobody does this in a day: the sector alone fills a crew duty period, so two nights on the ground is the minimum, and five or six if the lake or the mountains are part of the plan.
Range check: what flies nonstop and what stops
– A super-midsize jet is the floor. The Embraer Praetor 600 lists about 3,900 nautical miles and covers every British field in the table with a reserve, at £48,650 from Biggin Hill;
– The Challenger 350 lists about 3,200 nautical miles, which leaves too little margin on a 3,000-mile sector, so we plan it with one fuel stop: about 8 h 10 min and £65,250. The Citation Latitude also stops and comes to about £65,000, so both cost roughly £16,000 more than the Praetor flying straight through;
– For eight or more passengers, or a party with ski and trekking luggage, a large cabin avoids a weight compromise.

Two things worth knowing about these figures
– The starting field matters less than the aircraft. London City (£48,550), Stansted (£48,350), Aberdeen (£47,950) and Newcastle (£48,350) come out slightly below Biggin Hill and are left out of the table, which is built around it; Cardiff is £50,500 and Belfast City £50,600. Two points settle most Kyrgyz arrivals:
Plan the permit early
A landing permit is needed for each flight. For a charter the request typically goes in about three days before the movement at the latest, and the permit then runs for 72 hours from midnight on the date given. The application lists the aircraft registration and type, the operator, the schedule in UTC, the route with the Kyrgyz entry and exit points and the purpose, with the registration, airworthiness, insurance and noise certificates behind it. We plan for a week.
Handling at Manas is not optional
A handler is booked for every visit. It follows the permit, arranges fuel, parking and the ramp transfer, and meets the party in the VIP area. The offer names the handler and the permit status for every leg. Anything that needs the administration is done on a working day, because its hours are limited.
Arriving from Britain: passport, registration and what to carry
Kyrgyzstan is outside the European Union and the Schengen area. British citizens can enter without a visa, and the formalities are done at the airport of arrival.
British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 30 calendar days in each 60-day period; for a longer stay the traveller leaves in time or arranges the right documents30 days

Two passports, long stays and the way home
Kyrgyzstan does not recognise dual nationality, and a traveller who enters on a Kyrgyz passport gets very limited consular help from Britain. Overstaying even briefly can bring a fine and removal.
Coming home is a flight into Britain: a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation for the UK. Guests of other nationalities check their own entry rules.
What the British government says about the country
Earthquakes are a high risk and tremors are frequent; winter snow or slides can close mountain roads outside Bishkek; demonstrations are frequent in the capital and can turn violent with little warning; and near the border with Tajikistan, in the Batken region, the advice is to take care and check local conditions. We read the FCDO advice before a route is fixed.
Which airport for which part of Kyrgyzstan
The country is long and narrow, with the capital in the north, the lake in the north-east and the old cities of the Fergana Valley in the south-west. The ranges between them make the road the slow part, so the question is which two airports bracket the trip:

Bishkek, the lake and the high pastures: what our clients go for
Kyrgyzstan covers about 200,000 square kilometres and has some 7.5 million people, about 1.1 million of them in Bishkek. The highest point, Jengish Chokusu, reaches 7,439 metres.
Most visitors want the mountains and the water. Issyk-Kul lies at 1,607 metres, is about 178 km long and up to 668 metres deep, and rarely freezes because of its salinity. It is the second-largest mountain lake in the world after Titicaca and lies within a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Cholpon-Ata on the north shore is the old Soviet resort with an open-air petroglyph museum; Karakol at the eastern end is the starting point for the gorges and the ski base. The high summer pastures, the jailoo, with their yurt camps, are the other half of a typical journey, and Song-Kul is the best known.
The south is a different country in feeling. Osh is a city of the Fergana Valley, warmer and older, and Sulaiman-Too, the mountain rising from its middle, is described by UNESCO as a complete example of a sacred mountain in Central Asia, worshipped over several millennia. Business visitors nearly always stay in Bishkek, with Ala-Archa as the afternoon out.
The Kyrgyz year: summer pastures, ski winters and the mud of spring
The climate is continental in the lowlands and alpine above. Bishkek has a mean daily maximum of about 32 degrees in July and about 3 in January, with January nights averaging minus 7. The mountains and the lake behave differently:
the ski base at Karakol opens in mid-December, has its best snow in January and runs through February; Jyrgalan offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeingski and quiet city stays
April and May are muddy in the hills; the lower Ala-Archa trails open in April and the park is fully open to walkers in May, while high passes open latethe shoulder season
the passes are fully open in July and August, the yurt camps at Song-Kul open from mid-June and the lake warms to about 22 to 25 degrees in July, while Bishkek is hotpeak season
September is often called, with June, the best month for open passes and gentler temperatures; the passes begin closing and are shut by October, as are the yurt campsthe second good season
The altitude and the heat are scheduling facts
A jet departing from Tamchy, at 1,653 metres, on a hot July afternoon carries less than the book figure, so a full cabin may fly out in the cool of the morning. From Biggin Hill the Praetor 600 quote to Bishkek is £48,650 one way, to Osh £49,150 and to the lake £50,150.

Why a festival week costs more
Not for the flying, but for permits, handlers and rooms. A request a fortnight before a games week or a holiday may mean positioning an aircraft from Istanbul or the Gulf; six to eight weeks ahead is simpler and cheaper.
Flying to Kyrgyzstan with a dog or a cat
The animal travels in the cabin with you. The paperwork comes in two parts of unequal weight: a short one for Kyrgyzstan and a long one for the way home, because Kyrgyzstan is not on Britain's list of countries with simple pet-travel rules.
Two sets of rules
For entry the published summaries agree on the outline and differ on details, so we plan to the stricter reading and confirm with the Kyrgyz veterinary authority in writing before a booking with a pet is taken. Typically: a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before arrival and valid for the whole stay; a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of arrival and endorsed by the British government authority; no import permit and no quarantine for a personal dog or cat with the papers in order; and a microchip, which some sources call recommended. One summary names Manas as the airport for pet arrivals.
Coming home is where the planning lies. Because Kyrgyzstan is not a listed country, a dog or cat returning to Great Britain needs a Great Britain pet health certificate and a rabies antibody blood test: a sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an approved laboratory, and three months between the sample and the day of travel. A dog also needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before arrival in Britain. An animal that does not meet the rules can be held in quarantine for up to four months. In practice the blood test is done in Britain, months before the trip.
- A microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination;
- For the way home, the blood test, the three-month wait, the Great Britain pet health certificate and, for a dog, the tapeworm treatment given in Bishkek inside its window.
Cats need the same list without the worming. We book the vet appointment for the dog together with the aircraft and confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight. Birds, ferrets and rarer species are covered in our flying with pets guide.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. A jet that brings guests to Bishkek often leaves without any.
Where Kyrgyz empty legs come from
– Delegations and conference weeks. Aircraft arrive with guests and typically leave empty a day or two later, which produces westbound legs to Istanbul and Europe;
– The summer lake season. Jets that bring groups to Issyk-Kul in July and August often return without a booking.

How to read those figures
– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Manchester with eight aboard comes to about £2,600 a head;
– These legs are less regular than the ones to Germany or Italy, so an open return date helps.
Helicopter charter
In Kyrgyzstan a helicopter is a mountain tool, for the gorge and the valleys where the road is slow. We have not been able to confirm a regular civil helicopter charter operator in the country, so every request is a custom job, priced only after an operator and a landing site are named. The times are our straight-line estimates for a typical turbine helicopter in good visibility:

Before you plan around a helicopter
A landing away from an aerodrome needs an authorised site, so a lodge, a lake shore or a ski base is cleared before we quote. A helicopter needs its own permit, and whether a foreign-registered machine may work inside the country is something we ask the authority first.
At altitude a helicopter carries less, and low cloud or snow can keep it on the ground while a jet lands normally, so a road alternative stays in the plan.

For entry we plan to a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before arrival and a vet certificate dated within 10 days, and we confirm everything in writing before taking the booking.
