How long does it take to fly to Belgrade?
Two hours forty-five minutes from Biggin Hill in a Citation CJ3+, three hours and five minutes from Edinburgh in a Challenger, and one hour of clock difference to add on arrival, because Serbia and Britain change their clocks on the same weekends and Belgrade therefore stays an hour ahead all year. Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Belgrade shortly before eleven local time. The airport stands at Surčin, about 18 km west of the centre, and the motorway into the city usually takes 20 to 30 minutes outside the rush hour, so a client who left a London office at six can be in a Belgrade meeting before lunch. Add the drive to the British airfield and the passport and customs checks at the Serbian ramp and the whole journey from central London to central Belgrade comes to about five hours, which is the number to set against a scheduled flight with its check-in, its queues and its baggage belt.
Light jet or midsize: the question that actually comes up on this route
– Up to four people with ordinary bags, a light jet works and the saving is real. Be honest about the length of the sit, though: close to three hours in a CJ3+ is longer than most clients expect, and the Phenom 300E has the roomier cabin for that time;

The south and the coast: when a turboprop beats the motorway
Kopaonik is the sharp case. By car it is roughly three and a half to four hours from Belgrade, while Niš, the nearest international airport to the resort, is under an hour away in a Pilatus PC-12; the last stretch is then by road or by helicopter, and we price both before you choose. Zlatibor is the opposite: about 230 km and some two hours forty-five minutes by road, with no airport worth a jet, so the aircraft lands in Belgrade and the car takes over. Tivat on the Bay of Kotor and Dubrovnik are each a little over an hour in a PC-12, which makes the pair easy to book as one trip. Novi Sad, 75 km up the A1 motorway, has no jet airport at all; it is a Belgrade landing and an hour in a car.
Before you accept an onward quote
– The border at both ends. Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Greece are all in Schengen, and Serbia is not, so every leg out of Belgrade ends in a Schengen arrival and every return means Serbian passport control again. Britain is outside Schengen as well, with its own checks on the way home. The handler organises each end, but the quote should say so;
– Which airport, and who can fly it. Niš is a civil and military field, and the summer airports on the coast tend to fill with charters in July and August. A quote that ignores either is a quote that will change;
– Whether the itinerary is one booking. Belgrade to Budapest to Vienna and back over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning to Belgrade between each stop.

One airport carries the traffic, and the others matter only when the itinerary reaches the mountains or the coast. It helps to know what each one is before a quote arrives with its name in it.

Choose the handler
The general aviation ramp has several independent agents: Euro Jet, whose office stands beside the general aviation parking apron, Aero Elite Services, and FCG OPS Belgrade Handling, which keeps a crew room in the terminal on Apron A. Service and price differ, so we ask the operator for its preference and book the agent together with the permit.
Hours, permits and slots
Belgrade is listed as open 24 hours, so a late departure is possible. Airport listings say no slot is needed and handling is not compulsory, but a non-scheduled flight needs prior permission from the Serbian authority, filed at least 36 hours ahead, and flight-support agencies work to two or three working days. We secure the permission and the parking time in writing.
Border and passport
Serbia is outside the EU and outside Schengen, and Britain is outside Schengen too, so neither side offers a shortcut: you clear Serbian passport control and customs on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any six months, with a passport valid for at least 90 days after the planned departure from Serbia. The hotel normally registers you with the police within 24 hours.
Car and the cash rule
Give us the handler as well as the flight, because a driver sent to the passenger terminal will wait at the wrong door. Cash or travellers' cheques worth more than roughly £8,500 must be declared to customs on arrival, and the stamped copy kept for the way out. For late arrivals the car and crew go into the quote from the start.
Arrival formalities in Belgrade
Serbia stamps British passports at the border, and the stamp matters: the Foreign Office warns that leaving without an entry stamp can bring a fine, and in the worst case a charge of illegal immigration. At the private ramp the officer comes to the aircraft, so the stamp is rarely forgotten, but it is worth looking for it in the passport before the car moves off. If the itinerary includes Kosovo, ask us before you book: Serbia does not treat its crossings with Kosovo as official, and a traveller entering Serbia from there generally needs an earlier Serbian entry stamp obtained at Belgrade, Niš or Kraljevo airport. On the way home the UK side is a General Aviation Report filed by the operator between 48 and 2 hours before departure, and any passenger who is not British or Irish and needs no visa for the UK needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation.
From the apron to the Sava
Belgrade sits where the Sava meets the Danube, and most of what a visitor wants lies a short drive from the confluence: the Kalemegdan fortress above the rivers, Knez Mihailova street, the Church of Saint Sava, and the glass towers of the waterfront district on the Sava bank. The distances that matter run outward, to Novi Sad, to the ski resorts and to the south.

Flying to Belgrade with a dog or a cat
Serbia is outside the EU, so the routine that works for a weekend break in the EU does not apply. A British dog or cat going to Belgrade needs paperwork that starts months before the flight, chiefly because of the rabies blood test, and the planning has to begin long before anyone books a jet. The animal sits beside you in the cabin and no hold is involved.
What Serbia asks for, according to Defra's guidance for exports to Serbia and the Serbian Veterinary Directorate:
- An identification microchip, checked by the vet before anything is entered on the certificate;
- A rabies vaccination, with at least 21 days elapsed after the first one;
- A rabies antibody blood test: a sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an EU-approved laboratory, and at least three months between the sample and the day you leave;
- The Defra export health certificate for cats, dogs and ferrets going to Serbia, completed and signed by an Official Veterinarian, together with the animal's vaccination record;
- An import permit from the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, obtained before the animal leaves Britain;
- No more than five dogs, cats or ferrets in one non-commercial movement;
- For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the flight back to Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt.
What catches owners out on the Belgrade run
– The blood test sets the calendar. A vaccination, thirty days, the sample and then three months before departure add up to about four months, so a trip with an animal that has not yet had the test is a project and not a booking;
– The way home is a separate set of rules. Serbia is not in the EU, and what Great Britain asks of an animal returning from outside the EU depends on whether the country is on Defra's list. For an unlisted country the blood test and a three-month wait apply, with an exception for an animal vaccinated, tested and documented before it left. We check the list and the animal's position in writing for your dates;
– The tapeworm treatment for a dog has to be given in Belgrade, inside the 24 to 120 hour window before the return flight. We book the vet appointment together with the aircraft, so that the time of treatment and the time of departure are agreed in one message and not in three.

The Belgrade calendar: a river city with a festival habit
Belgrade keeps its rhythm by the weather and by the Orthodox calendar. Summers are hot, with July highs averaging about 29 degrees, and the river bank and the open-air stages fill up; winters are cold, with January highs of about 5 degrees, and still busy, with two New Years inside two weeks. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.
Why a festival week costs more
Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Belgrade is well placed in it. What gets tight in a busy week is the handler's cars, space on the general aviation apron and hotel rooms, all in the same days. A booking made a fortnight before a festival can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft positioned from Budapest or Vienna. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks Belgrade is easy to fly into, and the main constraint is the landing permit, not the aircraft.
Ways to bring the Belgrade price down
- Move the dates a few days where you can. The days just after a festival weekend are calm, and so is the second half of November;
- Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet already in Belgrade, Budapest or Zagreb needs less positioning than one from Britain, and on a sector of nearly three hours positioning is a large part of the bill;
- File early. The landing permit for Serbia is the one step that cannot be rushed, and a booking with ten days in hand leaves the operator room to look for the cheaper aircraft;
- Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise, and consider a Phenom over a CJ3+ for the legroom, since both carry four people comfortably.
Types of flights
Belgrade produces a different mix from the Italian or Austrian destinations we cover, because it is a government capital, a technology centre and the doorway to the western Balkans at the same time.
- Business and delegation travel, tied to the ministries, the National Bank of Serbia and the Belgrade Stock Exchange, to the banks and to the Belgrade offices of firms such as Microsoft, Intel and Ubisoft, where timing is fixed and the permit is the main concern;
- Investor and property visits to the waterfront district on the Sava, a long-running project built with an Emirati partner;
- Day trips from London, which at nearly three hours each way are a long day but a workable one;
- Weekend city breaks in summer and at New Year, with the river clubs, the old quarter and the dining scene as the draw;
- Ski trips that start in Belgrade or Niš and end at Kopaonik, and summer trips that run on to Montenegro and Croatia;
- Balkan business loops to Zagreb, Budapest, Vienna and Sarajevo, often with a Belgrade stop in the middle.
The day trip is worth a closer look. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. Leave at seven and you are in the meeting by noon; the return that starts at about half past five Belgrade time lands in Britain in the evening, and on this route we quote it both ways so the difference is visible.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Belgrade route they come from the pattern of seasons and events, and it helps to know what produces them.
Where Belgrade empty legs come from
– Festival and fair weeks. Aircraft arrive with delegations and leave empty a day or two later, producing outbound legs in the days afterwards;
– Summer on the Adriatic. When charters shuttle between Belgrade, Tivat and Dubrovnik through July and August, the short return legs are the ones most often offered;
– Ski season. Operators move aircraft towards Niš and back, and the short domestic legs can be cheap.
Because the Belgrade corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing outside an aerodrome needs an authorised site, so a hotel lawn or a private villa has its status confirmed before we quote and not after. We ask the operator and the Serbian authority for each site, and we do not assume that a place used last time is cleared this time;
– Mountain weather sets the schedule. Cloud over the high ground can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a mountain transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

Niš (INI / LYNI) is the nearest international airport to the Kopaonik ski resort, and Novi Sad has no jet airport: land in Belgrade and drive about an hour.
4Do I need a visa or a permit to fly privately to Serbia?
British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any six months, with a passport valid for at least 90 days after the planned departure from Serbia. Serbia is outside the EU and Schengen, so passport control and customs apply on every arrival. The flight itself needs prior permission from the Serbian aviation authority for a non-scheduled flight, filed at least 36 hours ahead, and we arrange it with the handler.
5Can I fly on from Belgrade to Niš, Kopaonik or the Adriatic coast?
Yes, and a turboprop is the usual aircraft: Niš is under an hour in a PC-12, against three and a half to four hours by road to Kopaonik, and Tivat or Dubrovnik is a little over an hour. A helicopter can cover the final stretch to the mountains. Zlatibor and Novi Sad are best reached by car from Belgrade.
6Can I take my dog to Belgrade on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, but Serbia is outside the EU and adds a rabies antibody blood test to the usual paperwork: a microchip, a rabies vaccination, a blood test taken at least three months before departure, an export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian and an import permit. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
