Private jet charter in Sofia
Sofia is about three hours from the London fields in a light jet and two hours ahead on the clock, and it is a capital where the flying is the easy part: the planning goes into the winter weather, the mountain road to the ski resorts and the landing permit for a British-registered aircraft. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever of those matters most. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The airport stands 530 metres above sea level in a valley ringed by mountains, with one long runway, a VIP wing of its own and compulsory handling, so the real decisions are the season, the size of the cabin and what happens after the apron.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sofia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Legacy 600 and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Sofia?
Just over three hours from Biggin Hill in a light jet, three and a half from Scotland, and a two-hour jump on the clock when you land, because Bulgaria keeps eastern European time and is two hours ahead of Britain all year. At 1,125 to 1,386 nautical miles this is the long end of short-haul. A light jet can do it, but it is a long sit, and past four passengers we quote a midsize cabin next to it. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground in Sofia around midday local time: about three hours in the air, plus the two hours the clocks have moved. The airport lies roughly 10 km east of the centre. A metro station next to Terminal 2 reaches the centre in about 20 minutes, but nobody arriving by private jet takes the metro, and a car waiting at the VIP entrance does the run in about 20 to 30 minutes outside the rush hour. A client who walked out of a London office at half past six can be in a Sofia meeting room by two in the afternoon. Add the drive to the British airfield and the quick processing at both ends and the journey comes to about five hours, with none of the queues, check-in desks and baggage halls that a scheduled flight adds.
Light jet or midsize: the question that actually comes up on this route
– Up to about four people with ordinary bags, a light jet is the right answer and the saving over a midsize cabin is real. Three hours in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is comfortable;
– Past that, or with ski bags, boots, camera cases or a dog, we start quoting a midsize jet alongside so you see both figures. In winter the luggage count rises faster than the passenger count, and the hold is what decides;
– Heavy aircraft only make sense when the party is large, when the same aircraft stays with you across several Balkan stops, or when Sofia is the first leg of something longer.

Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Sofia Airport. The ski weeks from December to March and the festival weeks of May and June can sit above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

Bulgaria from the air: when a turboprop beats the road
Varna is about 204 nautical miles from Sofia and Burgas about 188, a straight line of roughly 365 and 335 km, and the road is longer than a straight line. A Pilatus PC-12 covers either in about an hour, lands at an airport 10 km from the city it serves and leaves the day free. Plovdiv is the opposite case. The city lies about 144 km from Sofia, the flight is under 40 minutes, and by the time the car has fetched you from each airfield the road is usually as quick, so we only fly it when the same aircraft is carrying on elsewhere. Bansko has no airfield at all: the flight ends in Sofia and a transfer of about 160 km follows, which is why the helicopter block further down exists.
Before you accept a Bulgarian onward quote
– Which airport, and who handles it. Burgas has mostly seasonal airline service tied to the summer resorts, so a private arrival there sits among holiday traffic and we ask for the slot to be confirmed in writing before the quote is accepted;
– Whether the itinerary is one booking. Sofia to Bucharest to Belgrade over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning to Sofia between each stop.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Just fill in all the fields of the form with a note that you are interested in a specific model of the aircraft and get the final price. NB! - the figures are sent to you by email or messenger, please carefully fill in the contact details to get the calculation.
All our calculations are as transparent as possible for you. After receiving the request, we will prepare a beautiful offer - where the costs and the final price will be clearly described. The exact price is agreed in advance and is written in the contract, so you can be sure of the final cost.
Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Sofia:
Light jets, and where most bookings land
At about three hours this is the top end of what a light jet does comfortably: fine for three or four people with ordinary luggage, and tight once the ski bags arrive. The range is there, so the money goes on the hour and not on capability you will not use.
Midsize, for ski bags and winter luggage
Skis, boots, helmets and a week of heavy clothing are what push a party past the light-jet hold, and a midsize cabin also gives the longer legroom a three-hour sector deserves.
Super-midsize and large
For a delegation travelling as one party, for a team that needs to work in the air, and for trips that carry on from Sofia round the Balkans or to the Gulf rather than turning round.
Turboprops
The right aircraft for the Black Sea legs and the short regional hops: Varna and Burgas are about an hour in a turboprop, and the saving over a jet on that distance is large.
Helicopters
Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: the ski villages, a mountain monastery and a hotel lawn that has no runway. The landing site is agreed before the quote, never after it.

This is a small part of what is available. Sofia lies on the south-eastern edge of the European fleet, so outside the ski and festival peaks there is often an aircraft already within an hour or two of the city, in Bucharest, Belgrade, Athens or Istanbul, and that is where the better price tends to come from.

Business aviation airports in Sofia
One airport does nearly all of the work, and it has an unusual feature: the business aviation wing is part of the main passenger terminal. The other Bulgarian fields matter for specific reasons, the sea above all, and it helps to know them before a quote arrives with one of them in it.
| Airport | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Sofia, Vasil Levski SOF / LBSF |
The answer for nearly every trip. About 10 km east of the centre and 531 m above sea level, with a single asphalt runway of 3,600 m, listed as open round the clock and with customs on the airfield. The VIP lounge sits in the western wing of Terminal 1 with its own entrance and four rooms, and independent handling agents meet the aircraft on the ramp. Handling is compulsory and slots are required. High ground surrounds the field, so approaches follow set terrain-clearance procedures |
| Plovdiv PDV / LBPD |
The airport of Bulgaria's second city, about 12 km south-east of the centre, with a 2,500 m concrete runway. The city itself lies roughly 144 km from Sofia. The field serves the Old Town and the Thracian plain, and it is the fallback if Sofia is shut by weather, at the price of that drive |
| Burgas BOJ / LBBG |
The airport for the southern Black Sea coast, about 10 km from Burgas near Sarafovo, with a 3,200 m runway. Airline service there is mostly seasonal and tied to the summer resorts, so a private arrival is planned around the holiday schedule |
| Varna VAR / LBWN |
The northern coast, about 10 km from Varna near Aksakovo, with a 2,517 m asphalt runway and a Category I instrument approach on runway 09. The practical choice for Varna and the resorts around it, and a straightforward destination for a PC-12 or a light jet |
| Bansko and Borovets no airfield |
Bulgaria's two best-known ski resorts have no airport of their own. The flight lands in Sofia and the rest is by road or helicopter: Bansko is about 160 km away and two hours by road in good conditions, Borovets about 70 km and roughly an hour |
Four points settle most Sofia arrivals:
Choose the handler
Handling at Sofia is compulsory, so the question is which agent and not whether. Several independent agents work the ramp, and the VIP wing in Terminal 1 has its own entrance and lounge rooms. Service and fees differ, so we ask the operator for its preferred agent and check that the quote covers ramp, lounge and a car to the aircraft door.
Hours, slots and permits
The aerodrome is listed as open round the clock, but slots are required and handling is mandatory, so the slot is booked with the flight. Britain is outside the EU, which makes a British-registered aircraft a third-country operator: Bulgaria's civil aviation authority approves the landing, and handlers typically work to two or three working days for the permit.
Border and passport
Bulgaria applies Schengen rules and Britain is outside them, so you clear the border at the airport. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for at least three months after departure. A first entry means fingerprints and a photograph under the EU entry-exit system.
Car and the winter road
Give us the handler and the terminal and not just Sofia Airport, because a driver waiting at Terminal 2 will not see you come out of the VIP wing in Terminal 1. For the ski resorts book the transfer with the flight. In heavy snow the road to Bansko can close for hours, so a winter plan carries a second option: a helicopter, or a night in Sofia.

Arrival formalities in Sofia
Landing in Bulgaria from Britain is a Schengen entry wherever the aircraft touches down, Sofia, Varna or Burgas alike. The handler receives the general declaration, the crew list and the passenger manifest before arrival, and immigration for a private flight is normally cleared in the general aviation or VIP area and not in the main hall. Customs rules are those of the EU: goods that must be declared, meat and dairy products that cannot come in, and for animals the rules in the section further down.

From the apron to Vitosha
Sofia is a capital you leave quickly. The cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, which holds 10,000 people, and the National Palace of Culture sit in the middle of a city of about 1.3 million, and the places clients ask for are on its edges and beyond: the Boyana Church, the slopes of Vitosha, the monastery at Rila and the ski resorts of the Rila and Pirin mountains.
about 10 km, with a metro station next to Terminal 2 that takes about 20 minutes to the centre; a private car is quicker door to door20 to 30 minutes
the nearest ski slopes, with a cable car to Aleko at 1,810 m and a summit at Cherni Vrah of about 2,290 mcable car to 1,810 m
a UNESCO site on the edge of the city, where small groups are allowed about ten minutes inside, so the visit is planned around it10 minutes inside
about 70 km, the closest of the big resorts and the usual first choice for a short stayabout 1 hour
about 117 km to the monastery, a UNESCO site in a deep valley of the Rila mountainsabout 117 km
about 160 km by road, and in heavy snow the road can close for hoursabout 2 hours
Flying to Sofia with a dog or a cat
Bulgaria is inside the EU, so the EU pet rules apply from the moment you land, and they ask for more paperwork than the flight takes. The animal sits beside you in the cabin. The date on the certificate is the detail that goes wrong: it is valid for entry for ten days from the day it is issued.

What the EU asks for:
- A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same appointment, because a vaccination given first has to be repeated;
- A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 full days elapsed before travel;
- An Animal Health Certificate from your vet, issued no more than ten days before entry into the EU and valid for six months for onward travel within the EU and for the return to Britain;
- No more than five animals per traveller on one certificate;
- For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than five days before the return flight to Britain. The rule is written for dogs, and cats are not named in it.
What catches owners out on the Sofia run
– The tapeworm treatment is needed for the way home, not the way out, so it is a vet appointment you book in Sofia towards the end of the stay, inside a window of four days. A Sunday flight with a Saturday morning vet is the arrangement that works;
– A new Animal Health Certificate is needed for each separate trip, and an animal whose rabies vaccination lapses during the stay can no longer use the certificate for the return;
– A ski week with a dog is an ordinary booking. Settle the hotel and any helicopter before the quote, because a hotel has to accept the animal and a helicopter operator has to agree to it separately.
Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. The EU rules are common to all member states, but how the animal is presented on arrival in Bulgaria is something we check with the handler for every trip.
The Sofia calendar: a mountain capital with a festival habit
Sofia has two seasons that matter to a charter client. Winter belongs to the mountains and the ski weeks. Late spring and summer belong to the festivals in the capital and to the Black Sea, where the demand moves away from Sofia altogether. Knowing which of them you are booking matters more than choosing an aircraft.
Why a ski week costs more
Not the flying. What gets tight is the Sofia ramp, the slots, the cars and the helicopters, all in the same February weeks. Winter adds a risk of its own: Sofia lies in a valley ringed by high ground, winter temperatures can fall below minus 15 degrees, and a departure that fits a ski transfer on paper may move with the weather. A booking made a fortnight before a February weekend can still be done, but it pays more, and it may mean an aircraft positioned from Bucharest, Belgrade or Athens. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks a charter can often be arranged in three or four days, and the permit for a British-registered aircraft is what sets the pace.
Ways to bring the Sofia price down
- Move the dates out of February where you can. The first half of December and March usually still have snow, with fewer people competing for aircraft and cars;
- Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that is already in Sofia, Bucharest or Belgrade needs less positioning than one from Britain, and on a three-hour sector positioning is a large share of the bill. An aircraft registered in the EU also avoids the permit step that a British one needs;
- Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise. Four people and four ordinary bags do not need a midsize, and the money saved buys the car and the hotel.
Types of flights
Sofia produces a mix of its own, because it is a business capital with a large technology sector and a mountain resort region on its doorstep at the same time.
- Business and technology travel, driven by an IT sector that employs about 50,000 people and generates around 14 percent of the city's exports, where the dates are fixed by meetings and the permit is the main concern;
- Ski trips that land in Sofia and end in Bansko, Borovets or on Vitosha, with the luggage and the winter road as the main questions;
- Black Sea summers, flown to Varna or Burgas, sometimes with a business stop in Sofia first;
- Cultural weekends built around Boyana, Rila Monastery, Plovdiv or a festival;
- Balkan business hops to Bucharest, Belgrade, Thessaloniki, Athens and Istanbul, often tied to a Sofia stop;
- Day trips from London.
The day trip deserves a closer look, because the clock helps. Leave a British airfield at seven, land around midday in Sofia, hold meetings through the afternoon, take off at six in the evening local time and you are back in Britain at about quarter past seven the same evening, since the clocks give two hours back. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you, and that waiting is paid for, but it normally comes out below two separate one-way charters. On this route we quote the day trip both ways so the difference is visible.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Sofia route they follow the pattern of the seasons, and it helps to know what produces them.
Where Sofia empty legs come from
– The ski season. Aircraft bring parties out for a week and go home empty, or arrive empty to collect them, and the weekend legs in each direction are the ones most often offered;
– The Black Sea summer. Operators move aircraft between Burgas, Varna and Sofia, and aircraft that delivered a group to the coast return to base without passengers;
– Balkan business weeks. When delegations travel on charters from Bucharest, Belgrade or Athens, the aircraft often leave empty a day or two later, producing legs towards the west and north.
Because the Sofia corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a much better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Sofia match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter
In Sofia a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The city can be crossed by car, and the places where rotary flight changes the day are the ski resorts, the monastery at Rila and the slopes of Vitosha.
about 70 km by road, against roughly an hour behind the wheelabout 25 minutes
about 160 km by road, two hours in good conditions and longer in snowabout 45 minutes
about 117 km by road to the monastery in its deep valleyabout 35 minutes
the city, the mountain and the cable car line to Aleko from aboveabout 30 minutes
Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A hotel lawn, a private villa or a mountain terrace needs its status confirmed before we quote, not after;
– Mountain weather sets the schedule. Sofia is ringed by high ground and winters are cold, so cloud on the mountains can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, and a mountain transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;
– On routes across high ground it is worth asking whether a twin-engine machine is available. For the February ski weeks, book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is no rotary capacity.
The machines we usually source are the Airbus H125 for mountain work, the wider H130 for scenic and villa transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Sofia charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.
DAY TRIP · OUT AND BACK
A morning meeting in Sofia and home for the evening
Biggin Hill - Sofia and return, Citation CJ3+, about 3 h 15 min each way · 4 pax
Wheels up at seven, on the ground in Sofia around midday local time, in the meeting by two and away again at six in the evening. Back in Britain at about quarter past seven, because the clocks give two hours back on the way home. The aircraft and crew waited at the airport rather than going home, which is a real line in the quote and normally still comes in below two separate one-way charters. It is a long day and it works.
SKI SEASON · THE LUGGAGE BOOKED THE CABIN
Six people, six ski bags and a road to Bansko
Farnborough - Sofia, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 10 min · 6 pax
A February week in the mountains. Skis, boots and helmets took the hold well beyond what a light jet carries comfortably, and the quote moved up a class for that reason and not for the seats. The car to Bansko, about two hours in good conditions, was booked with the flight, and a hotel night in Sofia was held as the fallback in case snow closed the road.
TECHNOLOGY DELEGATION · FIXED DATES
A team visiting software and outsourcing offices
London Luton - Sofia, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 10 min · 8 pax
The dates were set by the client's meetings and not by us. Eight people, laptops and a request for a car at the aircraft door. The aircraft was British-registered, so the landing permit was the first item filed, and the handler had the passenger list in advance so that the passport check was waiting at the terminal.
BLACK SEA · THE OTHER AIRPORT WON
A group for a week on the southern coast
London City - Burgas, Citation CJ3+, about 3 h 40 min · 6 pax
They asked for Sofia because it is the capital and the name everyone knows. The resort was on the Burgas side of the coast, and Sofia is a straight line of about 335 km from it, so landing in Sofia would have meant a long day in a car at the end of the flight. The same aircraft flew a little further and put the group at Burgas, about 10 km from the city. The only cost was asking where the hotel was before quoting.
SKI WEEK · A DOG ON BOARD
Four adults and a spaniel for a winter week
Southampton - Sofia, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 15 min · 4 pax + dog
The Animal Health Certificate had to be issued inside ten days of arrival, and the tapeworm treatment for the way home had to be given by a vet in Bulgaria between 24 hours and five days before landing in Britain. We booked the vet slot with the aircraft, the hotel took the dog and the driver was told about the animal in advance, so the whole thing was settled in one exchange of messages and not three.
EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING WEST
A jet already going your way
Sofia - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 3 h 05 min · 3 pax
The aircraft had brought a ski party out for the week and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure towards the London fields.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Sofia
1How long is a private jet flight from London to Sofia?
About 3 hours 15 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a Citation CJ3+, and around 3 hours 5 minutes from Luton or Farnborough in a Phenom, covering roughly 1,125 to 1,154 nautical miles. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about 3 hours 20 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 3 hours 30 to 35 minutes. Sofia is two hours ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands around midday local time.
2How much does a private jet to Sofia cost?
From about £14,850 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill or London City, and £15,100 from Luton. A midsize cabin runs £19,050 to £19,900 from the south and Midlands, and from Scotland allow £26,850 to £27,450. The ski weeks and the festival season price above these figures.
3Which Sofia airport should a private jet use?
Sofia Airport (SOF / LBSF) for almost every trip. It is about 10 km east of the centre, has a 3,600 m runway and a VIP wing in Terminal 1, and handling is compulsory with slots required. Plovdiv (PDV / LBPD) is an alternative about 150 km away by road, useful if Sofia is closed by weather. Burgas and Varna are the airports for the Black Sea coast.
4When should I book a private jet to Sofia?
Outside the peaks three or four days is often enough, and the landing permit for a British-registered aircraft, which handlers typically work to two or three working days, sets the pace. For the ski weeks from December to March, February above all, and for the festival weeks of May and June, allow four to six weeks. Slots, cars and helicopters all get tight in the same days, and a late booking tends to pay more for an aircraft positioned from another country.
5Can I fly on from Sofia to Bansko, Borovets or the Black Sea?
Yes. Bansko is about 160 km and Borovets about 70 km from Sofia, roughly two hours and one hour by road, and neither resort has an airport, so the usual plan is a car or a helicopter from Sofia. For the coast a Pilatus PC-12 flies to Varna or Burgas in about an hour, or the jet from Britain can land there directly. Plovdiv is about 144 km away and the car usually wins.
6Can I take my dog to Sofia on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and the EU rules apply: a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of arrival, with no more than five animals per traveller. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than five days before landing. We confirm the arrival formalities with the handler for each trip.
