Private jet charter in Sion
About an hour and a half after leaving a London airfield, a light jet is already between the walls of the Rhone valley, with Verbier, Crans-Montana, Zermatt and Saas-Fee all inside a morning's drive. Private Jets UK plans each Sion charter around two facts that decide the trip: the approach is steep and open only to crews with the airport's own qualification, and the field is shared with the Swiss Air Force. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Sion is the nearest jet-capable airport to the highest resorts in Switzerland, and what you pay for that convenience is preparation, so the real decisions here are the aircraft, the crew and the handler.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sion depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Sion?
About 1 hour 25 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, 1 hour 20 minutes from Farnborough in a Phenom, roughly two hours from Edinburgh or Glasgow, and one hour of clock difference to allow for on arrival, because Switzerland keeps Central European time. At 438 to 757 nautical miles from the British fields we use, Sion is a light-jet trip from the south of England and a midsize one from the north. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and you land at Sion around half past nine local time. Customs and immigration are listed against the airport's operating hours, so the formalities are done at the airport itself, and a car waiting at the apron has you on the road quickly. Crans-Montana is about 35 minutes from the terminal and Verbier about 50, which puts a London client on a Verbier terrace by about eleven. Add the drive to the British airfield and the whole journey from central London to the resort comes to roughly four hours. By scheduled flight you would still be driving from Geneva airport, and that drive alone runs to about two hours as far as Sion.
Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route
– Up to four people with ordinary bags, take a light jet. Under an hour and a half in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is no hardship, and what you save against a midsize cabin pays for the transfers and the lift passes;
– Past four, or with ski kit, boot bags and a week of resort clothes, we quote a midsize alongside so that you see both figures. In the mountains the hold fills faster than the seats;
– The runway is 2,000 m by 40 m at 483 m above sea level, which is generous for light and midsize jets. The demanding part is the final approach, published at 4.0 degrees, and fire cover that is category 5 for charter traffic unless a higher category is requested in advance. For a heavy cabin we usually plan Geneva and add the road, after checking performance with the operator.

Private jet flights from Sion
Sion is a sound starting point for the Alpine side of Switzerland and for the Italian lakes, with the proviso that the airport is not a hub and its approach is not for every crew. The long Alpine hops are turboprop work, Zurich, Geneva and Bern are close enough that road or rail usually beats a flight between them, and Milan, Nice and Paris are an hour or less in a light jet. Onward from Sion: when the aircraft wins and when the road does
Samedan, the closest airport to St Moritz and Davos, is 112 nautical miles from Sion, about 45 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, and the mountains between the two valleys are exactly what makes the aircraft the better choice. Geneva is only 53 nautical miles away, Bern 44 and Zurich 93, and that is the point: between Swiss airports the road or the train is nearly always the answer, so a jet leg between them is a positioning flight and not a passenger plan. Geneva is about two hours from Sion by road and Zurich a little over three hours, which is why Zurich is a fall-back for a large cabin and not a first choice for a Valais trip. Chambery is 73 nautical miles on the chart, but the Alps stand in the way of any drive, so it makes sense only when the programme really includes Courchevel and Meribel.
Before you accept a Valais quote
– Which airport, and which rule applies there. Sion requires a handler for non-based aircraft over 3 tonnes and a crew with the airport qualification; Geneva asks for prior permission for every general and business aviation flight; Zurich needs a slot for every instrument flight. A quote that ignores the rule of the airport it names is a quote that will change;
– Whether the legs are one booking. Sion to Samedan and back over four days costs noticeably less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of returning to base between stops. Remember that the main apron allows non-based aircraft to stay for up to seven days.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Just fill in all the fields of the form with a note that you are interested in a specific model of the aircraft and get the final price. NB! - the figures are sent to you by email or messenger, please carefully fill in the contact details to get the calculation.
All our calculations are as transparent as possible for you. After receiving the request, we will prepare a beautiful offer - where the costs and the final price will be clearly described. The exact price is agreed in advance and is written in the contract, so you can be sure of the final cost.
Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Sion:
Light jets, the usual choice for four or five people
At under an hour and a half this is a short sector for a small party with ordinary luggage. Nothing here lacks the range, and the 2,000 m runway suits the class comfortably, so the money is better spent on the transfer and the chalet than on a bigger cabin you will not fill.
Midsize, for ski bags and a long week
The hold fills faster than the seats on a Valais trip: skis and boots in winter, golf bags for the Crans-Montana summer, and whatever comes home from the shops.
Super-midsize and large
For a team that wants to work in the air or a group travelling as one party. At Sion the approach performance and the fire category are checked with the operator before the quote, and Geneva is the fall-back for the biggest cabins.
Turboprops
The right aircraft for the hops across the Alps: Samedan, Geneva and Bern are about an hour or less in the air, and the saving over a jet on those distances is large.
Helicopters
Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: Zermatt, Saas-Fee, a chalet in Verbier or a lawn in Crans-Montana that has no runway. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

This is a small part of what is available. Sion is not a hub, but Geneva, Zurich, Bern and Milan are all within about forty minutes of the airport in the air, so a quote may name one of those cities as the positioning point. That is normal for a mountain airport, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports for Sion
One airport does the work for the central Valais, and four more matter when the aircraft is too big, the hours do not fit or the programme leaves the canton. Which one is right depends on the size of the cabin and on where the chalet is.
| Airport | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Sion SIR / LSGS |
The airport for Valais, 2.5 km south-west of the town in the Rhone valley, with a 2,000 m by 40 m asphalt runway (07/25) at 483 m above sea level. It is a joint civil and military field and one of the four Swiss Air Force jet fighter bases, with retractable arresting cables between the thresholds. Customs, immigration, fuel and handling are listed against the airport's operating hours, which differ between April to September and October to March. Non-based aircraft over 3 tonnes must use a handling agent, and the airport lists three: the airport company itself, TAG Aviation and Alpine Jet Service, while Signature Flight Support also appears on the airport's own pilot page |
| Geneva GVA / LSGG |
The large airport for western Switzerland and the second way into the Valais resorts, about two hours from Sion by road. All general and business aviation flights need prior permission, requested through the handling agent. Choose it for a heavy cabin, a late departure or a programme that begins on Lake Geneva, and accept that the road to Verbier or Zermatt is longer |
| Zurich ZRH / LSZH |
Switzerland's main airport, a little over three hours from Sion by road, and the choice when a heavy cabin or a late arrival rules the Valais out. Every instrument flight needs an airport slot obtained through a handling agent from the official list, and Jet Aviation runs the stand-alone terminal there with its own customs and immigration |
| Bern-Belp BRN / LSZB |
The quiet capital airport, with a 1,730 m runway and no slots required, but business jets above 3.5 tonnes may use it only from 08:00 to 19:00 local time. Sion is 44 nautical miles away, so it suits a programme that begins in the capital, not a ski week |
| Chambery Savoie CMF / LFLB |
On the French side of the Alps, with a business aviation terminal, customs and police by prior request, and an approach with a steep glide path that needs trained crews. It matters to a Valais trip only if the party also has Courchevel or Meribel on the list; the straight line to Sion is 73 nautical miles, but the mountains make the drive long |
Four things to settle before a Sion landing:
Choose the handler
Handling is compulsory for non-based aircraft over 3 tonnes, and the agent is named in the flight plan. The airport company, TAG Aviation and Alpine Jet Service are the agents in the airport's published data, and Signature Flight Support also works from the field. Fuel is Jet A1, with de-icing available from the start of November to the end of April, and hangars take aircraft up to 77 tonnes. Service and pricing vary, so we ask the operator for its preference.
Approach, hours and military days
The ILS to runway 25 is flown at 4.0 degrees, steeper than usual, and IFR flights need a crew with the airport qualification: the entry-level one is gained through an online briefing and limits the flying to daylight and good visibility, while the higher one needs local training or a simulator. The airport is not a 24-hour field, and short windows outside the published hours need special permission. Military flying windows apply, and some civil movements need authorisation inside them. We confirm all of it for your date.
Border and passport
Switzerland is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border on arrival, and Switzerland is outside the EU, so its customs rules are its own: you declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints, which is free.
Permits and the Swiss operator rules
A British operator running a charter also needs a Swiss permit: individual permits for up to three flights in three months must be requested at least 72 hours before the first flight, and a chain of four or more flights needs an operating permit filed at least 30 days ahead. For the winter weekends one broker listing reports slot coordination at Sion, although the airport's own data does not mention it, so we confirm it with the handler for each date.

Border, passport and Swiss customs
Switzerland sits in the Schengen area but outside the European Union, which is why a flight from Britain meets two separate systems at once. Passport control follows the Schengen rules, while customs follows Swiss ones, and the border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, an onward ticket and enough money for the stay. At Sion the airport itself publishes an immigration declaration among its forms for arriving crews and passengers, and for the return the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure. Passengers should keep the receipts of anything bought in Switzerland that may attract tax or duty on the way back.

From the apron to the pistes
Sion is a small cantonal capital in the middle of the Rhone valley, and the airport sits only 2.5 km from the town. What matters to a private client is the road out of the valley: Crans-Montana and Anzère climb the northern slope, Verbier and the Four Valleys lie to the south-west, and Zermatt and Saas-Fee lie up the two side valleys that open at Visp, to the east.

Flying to Sion with a dog or a cat
For a pet the paperwork is the part of a Valais trip that needs planning, and the flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of under an hour and a half most simply sleep. What goes wrong is the entry check, because Switzerland is not in the EU and its animal rules are its own.

What Switzerland asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:
- An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination. In every case the chip has to come first;
- A valid rabies vaccination. The first vaccination can be given from 12 weeks of age and takes effect 21 days later;
- If the animal already meets the Swiss requirements, a valid Swiss or EU pet passport is enough. Otherwise Switzerland wants an official veterinary certificate issued in the country of departure, and we confirm in writing which document it will accept for a British animal;
- A mandatory pet check at the red customs exit. An animal with missing documents can be refused;
- Entry through an approved point. The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office names Basel, Geneva and Zurich for animals flown in with their owner, and Sion is not on that list;
- For the return, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt. A pet travel document and a declaration go with the animal, and no more than five animals travel per person.
What catches owners out on the Sion run
– The entry point. Sion is the airport for the programme, but the animal check may have to happen at Geneva or Zurich, and that changes the whole route and adds hours of road. Whether Sion can receive a pet arriving by private jet is something we settle with the authorities in writing before the quote, not at the apron;
– The tapeworm window against the end of the stay. The treatment is booked with a vet in the resort or in Sion for the second half of the trip, between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home, and a flight that moves by a day can move the window out of reach;
– The order of the chip and the vaccine. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be refused, so the documents are checked line by line before the flight.
Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and a quarantine of up to four months awaits an animal that arrives in Britain without meeting the rules.
The Sion calendar: a long ski winter and a short list of festivals
Valais lives by the mountain seasons more than by a city diary. The winter is the long peak, spring and summer bring a handful of events that fill the resorts for a week at a time, and a glacier keeps skiers busy in between. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.
Why a winter weekend costs more
Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Sion is well placed in it. What gets tight is the single paved runway shared with a fighter base, space on the transit apron and cars for the mountain roads, all in the same weekend. The aircraft also needs a crew with the airport qualification, and not every operator has one available on the date. A booking made a fortnight before Christmas or the half-term can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Geneva or Milan. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. In the weeks between the peaks a Sion charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.
Ways to bring the Sion price down
- Move the dates by a few days where you can. A Tuesday to Tuesday week costs less than a Saturday to Saturday one, and the weeks outside Christmas and the half-term are calmer;
- Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Geneva, Bern or Milan takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
- Check whether Geneva works as well for your resort. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill, the sector to Geneva is priced about £400 lower than the one to Sion and the sector to Zurich about £200 lower. Geneva and Zurich have their own conditions, a prior permission or a slot, and the road from them is longer, so let the location of the chalet decide.
Types of flights
Sion produces a different mix from the city or the hub destinations we cover, because it is the gate to the highest resorts in the country and a fighter base at the same time.
- Ski weeks and long weekends in Verbier and Crans-Montana, flown into Sion with ski luggage and a car waiting at the apron;
- Zermatt and Saas-Fee, flown to Sion and finished by road, by train from Täsch or by helicopter with a mountain operator;
- Summer in the mountains: golf at Crans-sur-Sierre, hiking and glacier skiing, and the festival weeks in Verbier;
- Family and group trips, with chalet staff, children and a dog on board;
- Crossings to St Moritz, Davos or the Savoie, usually as a turboprop leg from Sion;
- Event weekends: the Caprices Festival in April, the Patrouille des Glaciers at the end of April and the Verbier Festival in July.
The day trip needs care. Sion is open only during the published hours, and the entry-level approach qualification limits flying to daylight, so a same-day return is planned backwards from the closing time of the season, with the aircraft and crew waiting for you at the apron. The waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. In winter, when the days are short, we quote it both ways so that the difference is visible.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Sion does not have a single event that creates them, so they come from the pattern of the ski season and the neighbouring airports, and it helps to know what produces them.
Where Sion empty legs come from
– Ski weekends. Parties arrive on the Friday or the Saturday and the aircraft goes home empty, and because the airport has published hours the legs on offer tend to be daytime departures;
– Festival and golf weeks. Guests for the Verbier Festival or the European Masters may arrive on charters from across Europe, and an aircraft that leaves empty a day or two later can be offered;
– The Alpine rotation. Operators moving aircraft between Geneva, Sion, Samedan and Milan put short legs on the market, and those short hops can be cheap.
Because the Valais corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Sion match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter
In the Valais a helicopter is the way to finish a journey, not to start it. The valley floor is easy by car, and rotary flight changes the day only where the road climbs: Zermatt, Saas-Fee and the high chalets of Verbier. Sion airport is itself a helicopter base: Air-Glaciers flies from the field, Alpine Helicopters is based beside it, and Air Zermatt keeps an office there.
Air-Glaciers flies a 20-minute loop in an Airbus H125 over the resorts, vineyards and snowfields of the Valais20 minutes
heli-skiing, scenic flights and VIP transfers between Sion, Geneva and Milan airports and resorts such as Courchevel, St Moritz and Courmayeurquoted by the operator
Air Zermatt keeps an office at Sion airport and flies AS 350 B3, EC 135, EC 130 and Bell 429 machinesquoted by the operator
prior permission is required, parking is limited to 7 days, and machines larger than 11 m rotor diameter or 13.15 m length need authorisation firstagreed in advance
Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a chalet lawn or a mountain pad before the quote is written, not after it;
– Weather sets the schedule. Cloud in the valleys can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a mountain transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;
– Mind the sectors at Sion. The helicopter area on the Grély side requires handling with TAG Aviation, and the north apron needs prior permission for non-based machines.
The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for Alpine work, the wider H130 for chalet and scenic transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Sion charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.
SKI WEEK · VERBIER
Six guests, ski luggage and a car at the steps
Farnborough - Sion, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 20 min · 6 pax
Wheels up at eight, on the ground at Sion before eleven local time and in Verbier a little before noon. The handler was named in the quote, the operator confirmed in writing that its crew held the Sion qualification, and the aircraft flew home rather than waiting the week on the apron. The return was booked for a mid-afternoon departure, well inside the published hours.
ZERMATT · A FAMILY WEEKEND
Four adults, two children and a shuttle train
Biggin Hill - Sion, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 25 min · 6 pax
They had assumed the car could drive into the village. We explained that private cars stop at Täsch and that the shuttle train covers the last 12 minutes, arranged the luggage to travel ahead, and kept a helicopter as the alternative for a day of heavy snow on the road.
GOLF WEEK · CRANS-MONTANA
Eight players, bags and a week in September
London Luton - Sion, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 25 min · 8 pax
The week of the European Masters meant hotels first and the aircraft second. We booked the car for the golf bags, positioned the jet from Geneva instead of Britain to keep the price down, and agreed the departure day four weeks ahead.
VERBIER FESTIVAL · A DOG ON BOARD
Four adults and a labrador in late July
Southampton - Sion, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 25 min · 4 pax + dog
The entry point for the dog was settled in writing before the aircraft was booked, and the vet appointment in Valais for the tapeworm treatment was set between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. The hotel took the dog, and the return was planned for the afternoon.
SION RULED OUT · GENEVA INSTEAD
Eight guests for a Verbier chalet
Edinburgh - Geneva, Challenger 350, about 1 h 55 min · 8 pax
The best-placed aircraft belonged to an operator whose crews did not hold the Sion qualification, so Sion was ruled out. We landed at Geneva, which asks for prior permission through the handler, and organised two cars for the road to Verbier.
EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY AFTERNOON WEST
A jet already going your way
Sion - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 25 min · 3 pax
The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday afternoon departure to the London fields.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Sion
1How long is a private jet flight from London to Sion?
About 1 hour 25 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City, and around 1 hour 20 minutes from Farnborough in a Phenom, covering roughly 438 to 473 nautical miles. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about 1 hour 35 to 40 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours. Switzerland is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands around half past nine local time.
2How much does a private jet to Sion cost?
From about £6,800 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, and £6,900 from London City. Farnborough and Luton in a Phenom run £7,100 to £7,300, a midsize cabin costs £8,850 to £9,900 from the south and Midlands, and from Scotland allow £15,900 to £16,250. The Christmas and New Year weeks, the February half-term and the busiest ski weekends can price above these figures.
3Which airport should a private jet use for Verbier, Crans-Montana, Zermatt or Saas-Fee?
Sion (SIR / LSGS) for all four. The road times from the terminal are about 35 minutes to Crans-Montana, 50 minutes to Verbier, 1 hour 10 minutes to the Zermatt valley, where private cars stop at Täsch and a shuttle train takes 12 minutes, and about 73 km to Saas-Fee. Geneva suits a heavy cabin or a late arrival, but it adds about two hours on the road, and Geneva asks for prior permission through the handler.
4Can any crew land a private jet at Sion?
No. Instrument flights need a crew with the airport qualification, the final approach is published at 4.0 degrees, and the entry-level qualification limits the flying to daylight and good visibility. The airport is not a 24-hour field, it is shared with the Swiss Air Force, and non-based aircraft over 3 tonnes must use a handling agent. We check the qualification, the hours and the fire category with the operator before we quote.
5Do I need a visa or a permit for a private flight to Sion?
Britain is outside Schengen and Switzerland is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A British operator also needs a Swiss permit: up to three flights in three months are covered by individual permits requested at least 72 hours ahead, and four or more flights need an operating permit filed 30 days ahead. We track it with the aircraft paperwork.
6Can I take my dog to Sion on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Switzerland asks for a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a valid vaccination whose first dose was given at 12 weeks or older, and an official veterinary certificate from Britain unless the animal holds an EU or Swiss pet passport. The pet check takes place at customs, and the Swiss veterinary office names Basel, Geneva and Zurich as entry points for animals flown in, so we confirm the entry point in writing first. For the return a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain. Cats are exempt.
