Private jet charter in Como

Lake Como is an hour and a half from a London airfield by private jet, but the jet does not land on the lake: the town of Como has no airport that can take one, only a seaplane base for small piston aircraft, so every charter here begins with the choice of a gateway. Private Jets UK builds the charter around that choice. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Milan Malpensa stands about 60 km from the water by road, Linate and Bergamo are further, Lugano lies across the Swiss frontier, and a helicopter closes the last stretch in a quarter of an hour. The real decisions are which airport, which border and which of the lake's busy weeks you are flying into.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter to Lake Como depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Lake Como?

About 1 hour 35 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Edinburgh in a midsize cabin, and one hour of clock difference to allow for on arrival, because Italy keeps Central European time. The times below are for the flight to Milan Malpensa, the gateway most Lake Como trips use, since the lake itself has nowhere for a jet to land. At 506 to 821 nautical miles from the British fields we use, it is a light-jet sector from the south of England and a midsize job from Scotland. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Malpensa at about half past nine local time. Allow ten minutes for customs and passports, add the 48 minutes without stops that Villa d'Este itself quotes for the drive of about 60 km, and a guest is at the hotel door in Cernobbio before eleven. By helicopter the last stretch from Malpensa to the Como area is about a quarter of an hour in the air, according to one lake operator. The trip is short enough to do in a day, and the planning question is the hour at which you want to leave the water.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to five people with ordinary bags, take a light jet. An hour and a half in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is no hardship, and the light class is also the one most likely to suit Lugano, the Swiss option across the frontier;

– Past five, or with evening dress for a gala weekend, camera cases or a dog, we quote a midsize alongside so that you see both figures. On the lake the hold usually decides before the seat count does;

– A heavy jet is the exception, but not a problem. Malpensa has two runways of 3,920 m and a ramp that takes long-range aircraft, and the ramp at Linate is cleared up to an A320-size corporate jet, while Lugano, with a runway of 1,415 m, narrows the list of types sharply.

Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Milan Malpensa. Linate and Bergamo come out within a few hundred pounds of these figures and Lugano a little lower, as the notes further down explain. The week of the classic-car concours, the early-September forum and the Christmas weeks can price above these figures, and the calendar block explains when.

Private jet flights from Lake Como

Nothing leaves from the lake itself, so the sectors below are flown from Malpensa, a quarter of an hour by helicopter or about 48 minutes by road from the Cernobbio shore. From there the Alps are close: Zurich and Samedan, the airport for St Moritz, are 40 to 45 minutes away by turboprop, Geneva, Nice and Munich are a short light-jet hop, and Olbia, Paris and the Gulf are the longer sectors. Typical one-way prices:

Onward from the lake: Switzerland is closer than it looks

Samedan is 75 nautical miles from Malpensa, about 40 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, and one lake helicopter operator quotes the same forty minutes from its Como base. Zurich is 114 nautical miles, which is 45 minutes in a turboprop. For a party of nine with luggage a turboprop is the efficient aircraft over the Alps, and a helicopter, limited to five passengers on the machine we looked at, saves the airport transfer. The coast is where the jet pays: Nice is 140 nautical miles and Olbia 298. Every sector between Italy and Switzerland is free of passport control, because both countries belong to Schengen, so the first landing carries the formalities.

Before you accept an onward quote

– The airport the aircraft leaves from. A departure from Malpensa and one from Lugano look alike on paper and differ in hours: Malpensa is published as open round the clock, while Lugano works in two blocks with a closure at lunchtime. Tell us the hour you need to be airborne and we price the airport that fits it;

– The airport at the far end. Samedan lies at 1,707 m above sea level, works in daylight hours and asks the crew to be briefed in advance, so we price Zurich beside it for the days when the Engadin is closed in.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Lake Como:

Light jets, the usual choice for four or five people

An hour and a half is a comfortable sector for a small party with ordinary luggage. Every aircraft here has the range and the runway for Malpensa and Linate, and the light class is also the one most likely to suit Lugano, so the money goes on the hour and not on capability you will not need.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for gala weekends and long stays

Formal clothes, camera kit and a week of lakeside luggage are what push a party past the light-jet hold, and the Concorso weekend and the autumn forum both produce parties of that kind.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a team that wants to work in the air, a delegation travelling as one group, or a trip that carries on from the lake to the Gulf or across the Atlantic. Malpensa is the airport for these types, because the short runway at Lugano narrows the list sharply.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the short Alpine hops from Malpensa: Zurich and Samedan are 40 to 45 minutes in the air, and the saving over a jet on those distances is large.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: Malpensa to the Como area in a quarter of an hour, a hotel pad such as the one at Villa d'Este, or a loop of the three branches of the lake. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Lake Como sits within reach of Milan, Zurich and Nice, so there is often an aircraft within an hour of Malpensa, and a quote may name one of those cities as the positioning point. That is normal for a destination with no airport of its own, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports for Lake Como

Como has no jet airport. The town has a seaplane base on the lake and a gliding field in the hills, neither of which takes a business jet, so the real list is the airports around it. Which one is right depends on where on the lake you are going, how big the aircraft is and what time you need to land.

Airport What it gives you
Milan Malpensa
MXP / LIMC
The default gateway for Lake Como. Villa d'Este puts it at 60 km and 48 minutes by car without stops. Two runways of 3,920 m, about 49 km north-west of Milan, with the Milano Prime terminal run by SEA Prime between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: five lounges, a private meeting room and a hangar sized for large-cabin jets. A handling company's guide describes the airport as open round the clock with customs and police on site, and reports no curfew and no prior-permission requirement, though parking in peak summer is not always granted and should be requested in advance. It is the airport for large aircraft and long ramp stays, and for the helicopter hop to the lake
Milan Linate
LIN / LIML
The city airport, about 7 km east of the centre of Milan, with one runway of 2,442 m. Villa d'Este puts it at 70 km and about an hour by car. The same guide reports that it opens round the clock except for runway-closure notices, with customs and police on site at night by prior request, and says that slots or prior permission are needed and the airport is busy all year. Parking is usually on remote stands and has to be arranged in advance, and the ramp takes aircraft up to a corporate A320. Choose it when the day starts in Milan and the lake comes second
Milan Bergamo
BGY / LIME
The third Milan option, about 100 km and 1 hour 40 minutes from Villa d'Este by road. The runway is 2,874 m by the operator's figure, and the BGY Executive area has its own customs post and two handlers. An airport database lists a night restriction that allows take-offs on one runway only between 22:00 and 05:00. It is worth a quote when Malpensa and Linate have no parking for the week, and for a programme that also takes in Bergamo or Lake Iseo
Lugano-Agno
LUG / LSZA
The Swiss gateway, about 35 km from Como by road with the frontier at Chiasso in between. A single runway of 1,415 m and a steep approach keep the list of types short, with light jets and turboprops at home there, and customs run in two blocks, about 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 20:00 in summer time, with a closure in the middle. It suits a light-jet party for Como and Cernobbio who want the shorter drive and are content to pass the border by road
Como seaplane base
LILY, Aero Club Como
The only aviation on the lake itself, on the shore beside the city. A water lane of about 900 m by 150 m, daylight and visual flying only, with no lighting, no customs and no status as an airport of entry. The club flies small piston seaplanes on training and scenic flights. A business jet cannot use it and a party arriving from Britain has to clear customs elsewhere first
Alzate Brianza
LILB
A gliding field at Orsenigo, about 7 km from Como, with a 600 m asphalt runway, no customs and no fuel. It is run by a soaring club and is reported to allow powered aircraft only by strict prior permission and in exceptional cases. It appears on charts of the area, which is why it is listed here, but it is not an option for a business jet

Four things to settle before a Lake Como arrival:

Choose the gateway by the hotel

Villa d'Este quotes 60 km and 48 minutes from Malpensa, 70 km and an hour from Linate, and 100 km and 1 hour 40 minutes from Bergamo. The west shore around Como and Cernobbio sits closest to Malpensa. Lugano is about 35 km from Como by road but adds a frontier crossing. Tell us the hotel and the hour, and we price the airport that fits.

Hours, slots and permits

Malpensa is reported as open all hours with no curfew, Linate needs a slot or prior permission, and Bergamo is a coordinated airport. A British operator is a non-EU operator in Italy, so a commercial charter needs a landing permit from the civil aviation authority, ENAC: for aircraft with fewer than 20 passenger seats the single-flight request is made at least three working days ahead. Lugano adds a Swiss permit for a British operator, applied for 72 hours ahead for up to three flights. We track all of it.

Border and passport

Britain is outside Schengen, so you clear passports and customs at the first Italian or Swiss airport. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. First-time visitors may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints, which is free.

Car, boat and driver

Give us the terminal and the hotel, not only the flight. A driver told only the airport may wait at the wrong building. Villa d'Este also has a private dock by request and a ferry pier five minutes' walk from the hotel, so the last mile can be done by water.

business aviation

Border, passport and the Swiss frontier

The first landing in the Schengen area is where the formalities happen, and at Malpensa that means being escorted through customs and immigration at the general aviation terminal, since clearance cannot be done on the aircraft. After that the lake is open country. Como itself borders Switzerland, at Chiasso and Vacallo, and the frontier has had no routine passport control since Switzerland joined Schengen, but because Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, customs checks can still be carried out at the border and goods have to be declared. Villa d'Este gives its own directions from Lugano along the A9 towards Como and Chiasso, leaving at Cernobbio Lago about 200 metres after the Swiss border and customs. For the return to Britain, the General Aviation Report is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and passengers who are not British or Irish citizens may need an electronic travel authorisation to enter.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

From the apron to the lake

Lake Como is shaped like an inverted Y, 46 km long, 146 square kilometres in area and up to 425 m deep, with Como at the foot of the south-western branch and Lecco on the south-eastern one. Como itself has about 84,000 people, a cathedral begun in the fourteenth century and a funicular up to Brunate at 715 m. What matters to a private client is the shore: Cernobbio with Villa d'Este and Villa Erba, Laglio, the Tremezzo side of the west bank, Bellagio on the headland where the branches meet and Varenna opposite. Boats run between all of them, and Navigazione Laghi operates the ferries and hydrofoils.

48 minutes
Linate to Villa d'Este

Flying to Lake Como with a dog or a cat

For a pet the paperwork is the part of an Italian trip that needs planning, and the flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on an hour and a half most simply sleep. Italy is an EU country, so the European rules apply, and the second question is the lake itself, because a day in Ticino turns the trip into a Swiss one.

private flight with animals

What Italy asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination, never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given from 12 weeks of age, with 21 days to pass before travel;
  • An animal health certificate from an official veterinarian, needed for each trip and valid for ten days for entry to the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport is not accepted. Defra publishes the Italian version as certificate 9072;
  • Entry through a travellers' point of entry, with no more than five animals per traveller. Which entry point applies to a private aircraft we confirm in writing before the flight;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, with a pet travel document and a declaration. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Lake Como run

– The Swiss side. Switzerland lists Basel, Geneva and Zurich as the airports where accompanied animals may enter by air, and Lugano is not among them. A drive to Lugano for lunch is a Swiss import in its own right, so we check the paperwork for a day in Ticino before the booking is taken;

– The helicopter. One lake operator carries pets only under 12 kg and no more than five passengers with a limited number of bags, so a large dog and a family may need a car for the last stretch;

– The vet at the far end. The 24 to 120 hour window for the tapeworm treatment is only four days wide, so book an appointment near the lake for the end of the stay and keep the receipt with the pet travel document.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Lake Como calendar: cars in May, a forum in September, lights in December

Lake Como has a long season and a short list of fixed weeks. The lake works best between April and October, the weeks that matter most are the few with a famous event in them, and winter is quiet until the Christmas lights. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

April to October
The boat season. Ferries run their normal timetable from about early June to the end of September, and after October many restaurants and cafes close and the boats run a much reduced service. Many hotels shut between November and March and reopen from Easter. Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo closes its gardens and museum for the winter
February, April, September
Milan's big weeks. Fashion Week falls in February and September, Design Week in April and the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in September. The effect on the lake is indirect but real: parking at the Milan airports tightens in summer and during events, and the handling companies advise asking for it early
May
The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, held by BMW Group Classic with the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este at Villa d'Este and Villa Erba in Cernobbio, with a public day on the Sunday at Villa Erba. The azaleas at Villa Carlotta flower for a few weeks in the same month
Around 24 June
The Sagra di San Giovanni at Ossuccio in Tremezzina: fireworks over Isola Comacina after sunset, hundreds of boats in the bay, a Mass on the island the next day and a regatta of the traditional lucia boats
Late July
Open-air cinema at Villa Erba in Cernobbio. The Lake Como Film Nights and the Lake Como Film Festival have run there in the last week of July, with evening screenings in the park
July and August
The peak of the summer: July and August are the hottest and driest months, with temperatures reaching about 30 degrees Celsius and everything open. August is the main Italian holiday month, so expect crowds
Early September
The Ambrosetti forum at Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, a three-day gathering of some 200 top managers and, by the organiser's account, heads of government, ministers and Nobel laureates. September also holds Milan fashion and the Monza race
Late September to early October
Il Lombardia, the last of cycling's five Monuments, known as the race of the falling leaves. The finish alternates between Como and Bergamo
October
The Lake Como Design Festival in Como, a programme of exhibitions, talks and film in the historic centre, with Teatro Sociale and Palazzo Mantero among the venues
Late Nov to early Jan
Como Città dei Balocchi, the city's Christmas event: wooden market stalls, an ice rink in Piazza Cavour, a post office for Father Christmas and the Magic Light Festival of projections on the buildings, running from late November to Epiphany. Weekend breaks by air, small parties, often with a dog

Why a concours or forum weekend costs more

Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large, and Malpensa is well placed in it. What gets tight is the parking at the Milan airports, the cars and the rooms on the shore, all in the same few days. A booking made two weeks before the Concorso or the September forum can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Zurich, Nice or Rome, which costs more. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks the lake is an easy place to reach, and a charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Lake Como price down

  • Move the dates by a few days where you can. The days either side of the Concorso weekend and the early-September forum are calmer than the weekends themselves;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Milan, Zurich or Nice takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
  • Compare the gateways. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill, Linate and Bergamo are priced about £300 above Malpensa, and Lugano about £150 below it. The Lugano saving is real and so is the border crossing and the 35 km by road, so let the hotel decide.

Types of flights

Lake Como produces a different mix from the Alpine or the big-city destinations we cover, because it is a resort with a famous hotel, a handful of fixed events and no airport, in a region where the nearest runways belong to Milan and to Switzerland.

  • Weekends and weeks on the lake, with a villa or a hotel at Cernobbio, Tremezzo or Bellagio, often with a dog and a car waiting at Malpensa;
  • Gala weekends: the Concorso d'Eleganza in May, private celebrations in the summer and the Christmas lights, all with formal clothes in the hold;
  • Business and policy gatherings at Cernobbio, led by the September forum, where timing is fixed and arrival formalities are the main concern;
  • Overflow from Milan in the fashion, design and Monza weeks, with some guests working in the city and sleeping on the lake;
  • Day trips across the frontier to Lugano, with a driver who knows the border posts and the airport that fits;
  • Onward hops to Samedan for St Moritz, to Zurich and Geneva and to the Mediterranean inside a longer European loop.

The day trip is the one to look at closely. Land at Malpensa at about half past nine, leave at six in the evening local time and you are back on the British side at about half past six UK time, with roughly eight and a half hours on the ground. Take off the drive each way and about seven of them are on the shore. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. We quote it both ways, so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Lake Como does not produce them in volume, but it produces them on a pattern, and it helps to know what that is.

Where Lake Como empty legs come from

– Event weekends. When guests arrive for the Concorso, the forum or a wedding, the aircraft often leave empty a day or two later, and the outbound leg from Malpensa is the one offered;

– Summer weekends. Small parties arrive on a Friday and the aircraft goes home empty, which produces an outbound leg on the Friday or Saturday;

– Milan weeks. After fashion and design weeks, aircraft that brought guests to Milan reposition from Malpensa and Linate toward Britain, and a leg that starts there is one a lake client can take.

Because lake dates cluster around a few events, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Malpensa match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

On Lake Como a helicopter is part of the middle of the trip and not only the edge. The airports are close to an hour away by road, the shore is long, and the places people go are strung along it. Villa d'Este has a private helipad for its guests, and a private civil heliport in the Como area, open from 07:00 to 23:00 according to its operator, sends machines to Malpensa, to the lake and over the Alps.

Malpensa to the Como area
the usual last stretch, against 48 minutes by road to Cernobbio
about 15 minutes
Como to Samedan, for St Moritz
over the Alps, against a flight of the same length from Malpensa in a PC-12
about 40 minutes
Como to Zermatt
a long Alpine sector, flown on the days the weather allows it
about 55 minutes
A sightseeing loop of the lake
from the Como heliport north past Cernobbio, Bellagio and Varenna, about an hour for the whole experience
15 to 18 minutes in the air
Como to Bellagio
13 nm in a straight line, against the road round the shore
about 15 minutes
Como to Tremezzo
12 nm up the west shore, for Villa Carlotta and the grand hotels
about 14 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs a site that has been agreed and cleared, so we check the status of a hotel lawn or a villa pad before the quote is written. Villa d'Este has its own helipad and the rest we check one by one. Bellagio, for one, has no public helipad that we can confirm, so a landing there means agreeing a private site;

– Capacity is small. The Como heliport operator we looked at takes at most five passengers, two hold suitcases and three cabin cases, and pets under 12 kg. A party of six, or one with golf clubs and a spaniel, becomes two flights or a helicopter and a car;

– Weather sets the schedule. Cloud on the peaks and fog on the lake can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, and a flight across the frontier into Switzerland means a second set of permissions and a customs question. Tell us the landing site at the other end when you ask for the quote.

The seaplane is the other aircraft of the lake, and a pleasure rather than a transfer. Aero Club Como, which calls itself the oldest seaplane flying organisation in the world, flies scenic trips over Bellagio and Villa del Balbianello in small single-engine floatplanes, from the water beside the Sinigaglia stadium in the city. It cannot meet a jet and is not an airport of entry, so we book it as an experience on the day after arrival, not as a way to reach the lake.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for scenic and mountain work, the wider H130 for villa and lakeside transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Lake Como charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

DAY TRIP · OUT AND BACK

A morning meeting at Cernobbio and home for dinner

Biggin Hill - Malpensa and return, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 35 min each way · 4 pax

Wheels up at seven, on the ground at about half past nine local time, in the car by ten and at the hotel before eleven. The aircraft and crew waited at Malpensa rather than going home, which is a real line in the quote and still comes in below two separate one-way charters. The drive back was timed so that the aircraft left in the early evening.

CLASSIC CARS · A MAY WEEKEND

Six people, evening clothes and a Sunday at the villa

Farnborough - Malpensa, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 35 min · 6 pax

The luggage booked the cabin: dinner jackets and gowns took the hold past what a light jet carries comfortably, so the quote moved up a class for that reason and not for the seats. The booking went in six weeks ahead, because the hotels and the airport parking fill in the same week. The return left on the Monday morning.

FORUM WEEK · FIXED DATES

A delegation for the September gathering at Cernobbio

London Luton - Malpensa, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 35 min · 8 pax

The dates were set by the event and not by the client. Eight people, laptops, folders and a request for cars at the aircraft door. The airport parking was requested well ahead, the handler confirmed it, and the arrival at the hotel took the 48 minutes the hotel had promised.

THE LAKE IN SUMMER · THE LAST STRETCH

A helicopter to the hotel, a car for the luggage

Southampton - Malpensa, Citation Latitude, about 1 h 35 min · 5 pax

A party of five, a hotel at Tremezzo and a wish not to spend an hour on the road. The helicopter took the people from Malpensa in a quarter of an hour; the suitcases followed by car, because the machine's bag allowance was smaller than the party's. We had confirmed the landing site with the hotel before the quote.

A DOG ON BOARD · ITALY ONLY

Four adults and a spaniel for a long weekend

Edinburgh - Malpensa, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 15 min · 4 pax + dog

The party stayed on the Italian side of the lake and left the Lugano lunch for another trip, because the Swiss list of airports for accompanied animals does not include Lugano and a day across the frontier is a Swiss import. The vet appointment for the tapeworm treatment was booked in Como for the end of the stay.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING WEST

A jet already going your way

Malpensa - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 35 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of one date, took the Sunday evening departure and paid a fraction of the normal fare.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Lake Como

1Is there a private jet airport at Lake Como?

No. The town of Como has no airport that takes a business jet. It has a seaplane base on the lake, Como-Idroscalo (LILY), run by Aero Club Como for small seaplanes in daylight and visual conditions, with no customs, and a gliding field at Alzate Brianza (LILB) with a 600 m runway. Jets use Milan Malpensa, about 60 km and 48 minutes by road from Cernobbio, or Linate, Bergamo or Lugano in Switzerland, and a helicopter or a car covers the last stretch.

2How long is a private jet flight from London to Lake Como?

About 1 hour 35 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet to Milan Malpensa, and 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes in a Phenom from Farnborough or Luton, covering roughly 506 to 540 nautical miles. From Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes, and about 2 hours 15 minutes from Edinburgh in a midsize cabin. Add about 48 minutes by road from Malpensa to Cernobbio, or about a quarter of an hour by helicopter. Italy is one hour ahead of the UK.

3How much does a private jet to Lake Como cost?

From about £7,600 one way on a light jet from Biggin Hill to Malpensa, and £7,900 to £8,050 in a Phenom from Luton or Farnborough. A midsize cabin runs £9,850 to £10,850 from the south and the Midlands, and £13,700 from Edinburgh. These are starting figures for a one-way sector. A same-day return, the classic-car weekend in May, the September forum and the Christmas weeks move them up, and we quote the day trip both ways.

4Which airport should a private jet use for Lake Como: Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo or Lugano?

Malpensa (MXP / LIMC) is the default: Villa d'Este quotes 60 km and 48 minutes by car, and the airport has two runways of 3,920 m and a Prime terminal for private flights. Linate is the city airport, 70 km and about an hour from the hotel, and needs a slot or prior permission. Bergamo is the third Milan option, about 100 km away. Lugano is about 35 km from Como by road and suits light jets and turboprops, with a runway of 1,415 m, customs in two blocks and a Swiss frontier to cross. A helicopter covers the last stretch from any of them.

5Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Lake Como?

Britain is outside Schengen and Italy is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival at the first Italian airport. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A British operator running a charter is a non-EU operator, so for aircraft with fewer than 20 passenger seats the Italian civil aviation authority, ENAC, needs the single-flight request at least three working days ahead. Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU customs union, so a drive to Lugano needs no passport check but goods can still be inspected. For the return to Britain, a General Aviation Report is filed between 48 and 2 hours before departure.

6Can I take my dog to Lake Como on a private jet?

Yes, and the dog travels in the cabin with you. Italy, as an EU country, asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given from 12 weeks of age and at least 21 days before travel, and an animal health certificate for each trip, valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport is not accepted. On the way back dogs need a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival in Britain. A day in Switzerland follows Swiss rules, and Lugano is not on the Swiss list of airports for accompanied animals, so we confirm the entry point in writing first.
