Private jet charter in Ethiopia

Almost eight hours in the air is the price of reaching Ethiopia nonstop from the south-east of England, and that figure settles the choice of aircraft before it settles anything else. Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Union, so a good share of our passengers fly there for meetings and not for leisure. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Ethiopia that means a landing permit requested from the Ethiopian civil aviation authority, a handler named before the aircraft leaves Britain, an e-visa for every passenger and a straight answer on which aircraft can fly the distance in one hop.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Ethiopia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 flying nonstop to Addis Ababa Bole International and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Ethiopia?

Ethiopia keeps East Africa Time, three hours ahead of Greenwich all year, with no daylight saving. The gap with Britain is therefore three hours in winter and two in summer. A departure from Biggin Hill at eight in the morning, London time, lands after about eight hours of flying, which is a little before seven in the evening in Addis Ababa in winter. These are the sectors to Bole on a Praetor 600, gate to gate, from the airfields our clients use most:

Biggin Hill to Addis Ababa
3,304 nautical miles, the closest of the London fields to Ethiopia, and the base for the price quoted at the top of the page
about 7 h 50 min
Farnborough to Addis Ababa
3,326 nautical miles, the usual field for Surrey, Hampshire and the Thames Valley
about 7 h 55 min
London Luton to Addis Ababa
3,337 nautical miles, the choice for north London, Hertfordshire and the Midlands
about 7 h 55 min
Birmingham to Addis Ababa
3,401 nautical miles, the main airport of the Midlands
about 8 h 05 min
Manchester to Addis Ababa
3,451 nautical miles, the departure for the north-west of England
about 8 h 10 min
Edinburgh to Addis Ababa
3,582 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, about 280 nautical miles further than Biggin Hill
about 8 h 30 min

Few trips to Ethiopia go anywhere but the capital, and the other airports a jet can use sit only a little further out. The aircraft that reaches Bole nonstop reaches these too:

Biggin Hill to Dire Dawa
3,364 nautical miles, the eastern gateway, for Harar and the east of the country
about 8 h
Biggin Hill to Hawassa
3,395 nautical miles, the lakeside city of the Rift Valley, south of the capital
about 8 h 05 min
Biggin Hill to Arba Minch
3,429 nautical miles, the southern Rift Valley lakes
about 8 h 05 min

The distance settles the aircraft before the budget does

Addis Ababa lies 3,304 nautical miles from Biggin Hill. A midsize jet such as a Citation XLS+, with a range of about 2,100 nautical miles, needs two fuel stops, which is why the quote and the title price of this page are built on the Praetor 600, a super-midsize jet quoted at about 3,900 nautical miles of range. A Challenger 350, quoted at about 3,200, needs one stop, because the reserves leave no margin on this distance.

A stop adds about an hour and a half of ground time and a second set of landing and handling charges, shown as a line of its own in the quote. The operator files the route and the overflight permissions for every state along it.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Prices for the private jet flights to Ethiopia

Typical private jet charter prices from Britain to Addis Ababa Bole, listed cheapest first. Every row is a nonstop Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for this run without a fuel stop. London City is left out on purpose, because its short runway is a poor start for a sector of this length:

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The departure airfield moves the price by a few thousand pounds and not by tens of thousands. Edinburgh costs about £4,200 more than Biggin Hill on the same aircraft and Glasgow about £4,600 more, and each hundred nautical miles adds roughly £1,500 on a Praetor 600;

– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies back empty. For a return trip with a stay of several days the aircraft either waits in Ethiopia, with parking and crew accommodation as lines of their own, or flies home and returns for you.

Bole is the anchor because it is the airport the business world uses. The same aircraft flying from Biggin Hill to the other Ethiopian airports that take a business jet costs this:

Route from Biggin Hill Flight time Price, one way
Biggin Hill - Addis Ababa Bole
3,304 nm / 6,119 km, Praetor 600
about 7 h 50 min from £52,300

Biggin Hill - Arba Minch
3,429 nm / 6,351 km, Praetor 600
about 8 h 05 min from £54,200

Why the title says Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is the closest Ethiopian airport to London on that list, and the only one with round-the-clock customs and a full set of services. Dire Dawa costs £900 more from the same airfield and Arba Minch, the furthest, £1,900 more. The differences are small beside the cost of the permit work and the handling at a secondary field, which is why most itineraries land at Bole and continue on the ground or on a local turboprop.

Private jet flights within Ethiopia and to its neighbours

A typical Ethiopian trip is a hub and spoke: the jet from Britain lands in the capital, and the party works from there for a few days, with at most one flight out to the Rift Valley or the east. The sectors below start at Addis Ababa and include the neighbouring capitals:

Two things worth knowing about the sectors inside Ethiopia

– Domestic sectors inside Ethiopia are typically reserved for locally registered operators, and handler guidance says a charter from abroad may normally land at a single destination in the country. We arrange the domestic leg with a local operator, quote it separately and confirm the position for your aircraft before you commit;

– A Pilatus PC-12 covers the Rift Valley hops in about an hour, which is why a turboprop is the ordinary tool for Hawassa and Arba Minch. The northern airports are left out of the table on purpose, for the reasons given in the section on arrivals.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h
Medium-sized jet (Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP)£3,000 - 3,700/h
Large medium-class jet (Challenger 300)£4,600 - 5,500/h
Large jet (Legacy 600)£4,900 - 5,800/h
Long-haul jet (Global 5000, G550, Falcon 7X)£5,800 - 8,800/h
Business linersfrom £10,300/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Ethiopia:

Turboprops and light jets

The class for the hops inside Ethiopia once you are there. The Pilatus PC-12 NGX takes up to nine on the Rift Valley sectors. From London these jets reach Addis Ababa only with two stops, which few clients accept.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h

Super-midsize

The smallest class that flies London to Addis Ababa in one go, and the one our title price is built on. A Challenger 350 needs a technical stop on the way out.

Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Large cabin

For a delegation with staff, or a family with a long stay ahead, and room to rest on a sector of nearly eight hours. Range is tighter on the way home, because the airfield stands at 2,334 metres and the aircraft leaves heavy.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Ultra-long range

The class that makes the run comfortable, with the margin to fly Addis Ababa to London nonstop with a full cabin and to continue to the Gulf or the rest of Africa without a stop.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Business aviation airports in Ethiopia

One airport carries almost all the private traffic in Ethiopia, and the useful question is what that airport can and cannot do for a business jet:

Airport Ground How it operates
Addis Ababa Bole International
ADD / HAAB
About 6 to 8 km south-east of the city centre, at 2,334 metres above sea level The answer for every business trip. Two parallel runways of 3,800 and 3,700 metres, open round the clock, customs on site, an ILS approach. Slots not required, handling compulsory, and all flights listed as prior permission
Dire Dawa International
DIR / HADR
Eastern Ethiopia, 193 nm from Addis Ababa One runway of about 2,680 metres, customs on its record, jet fuel listed, a few kilometres from the city. Listed hours are 06:00 to 20:00 local and by prior permission, so a late arrival is agreed in advance. Handling not compulsory
Hawassa
AWA / HALA
Rift Valley, 120 nm from Addis Ababa A new asphalt runway of 3,130 metres at 1,708 metres elevation, with scheduled flights from the capital. We confirm customs, handling and the arrival procedure for a private aircraft before we quote
Arba Minch
AMH / HAAM
Southern Rift Valley, 198 nm from Addis Ababa One runway of 2,800 metres, about 5 km north-east of the town, with scheduled flights from the capital. Domestic in character: a foreign aircraft normally arrives from Addis Ababa and not from abroad
Northern airports (Lalibela, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Axum, Mekelle)
LLI, BJR, GDQ, AXU, MQX
Amhara and Tigray regions Lalibela has a runway of 2,400 metres, 23 km from the town. We do not plan private charters to any of these fields, because the British government advises against all travel to the regions around them

Bole is an airline hub, and a private aircraft shares it with the long-haul fleet of the national carrier. It has a single general aviation parking area, and wide-body and large business aircraft are often parked on the commercial side of the airport. A business aviation department exists, and private flights are handled much like VIP flights. For heads of state, senior officials and the diplomatic corps, a dedicated VIP terminal has been built on the left wing of Terminal 2, with its own access road and parking. The handler and the protocol office decide whether a private flight uses it, and we ask before the quote is final.

Handling is compulsory. One designated handler is listed for the airfield, S B Man and Co Ltd, and the other firms in the records are supervising agents who book the services for the operator. Customs, immigration and quarantine are normally done in the VIP lounge when this is requested in advance through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the crew go through a separate crew line in the main terminal. Clearance on board is not an option. Jet fuel is listed from two suppliers, AEG Fuels and World Fuel, and Bole is the only airport in the country with an in-flight caterer, so the catering for a continuing journey is collected here before leaving.

Cash and ordinary credit cards are not the usual means of payment at Bole. The supervising agent normally extends credit and settles the landing, parking, navigation and terminal fees, which appear as lines in the invoice, and a notice of at least 12 hours is recommended for the handling.

Dire Dawa can take an international arrival and suits a party that wants to start in the east. Sources differ on whether it works round the clock, so we treat it as a daytime field. Hawassa and Arba Minch are domestic fields, and we plan a private jet there only as the second leg of a trip that began at Bole.

Five points settle most Ethiopian arrivals before a quote goes out:

Landing permit: 72 working hours

A foreign operator needs a landing permit, and an overflight permit where land is crossed, from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority. Handler guidance quotes 72 working hours of lead time and a validity of 72 hours once the permit is issued. Landing permits are processed on weekdays in office hours, roughly 08:00 to 17:00 local, so a request made on a Friday evening for a Monday departure is already late.

A local sponsor for the visit

A technical or crew-rest stop needs a permit and little else. A landing for passengers needs a local business contact and a letter from that contact to the authority confirming the invitation. For a tourist trip the contact can be a tour company or a hotel, and for a business trip it is the host company.

Changes need a revised permit

A new tail number, a change of destination or a schedule outside the validity window each need a revision, which takes at least 12 working hours. A change of passengers or crew normally does not.

Slots and prior permission

Records disagree about whether Bole is a prior-permission airport. We treat every arrival as one that needs permission and ask the handler for written confirmation of the time, the stand and the terminal.

Cabotage

A charter from abroad may normally land at one destination in the country. A flight onward from Addis Ababa to Hawassa, Arba Minch or Dire Dawa is flown by a locally registered operator, and the authority wants to know the purpose of each destination.

Arriving from Britain: passports, visas and customs

Ethiopia is far outside the Schengen area, and every British passenger needs a visa before travel. These are the points that decide whether the party passes through in minutes or is held at the desk:

Passports
the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day of arrival and be machine-readable; a dual national returning to Britain must carry a British passport or a certificate of entitlement
every passenger, children included
Visas
the British government points travellers to the official Ethiopian e-visa platform, which asks for a colour scan of the passport and a passport-sized photograph; the tourist visa it describes is a single-entry visa for 30 days, it does not allow any employment, voluntary work included, and an overstay costs 30 US dollars a day, payable before the traveller can leave
apply online before the flight
Health
a yellow fever certificate is needed when the traveller comes from a country with a risk of transmission, and some travellers must complete a health survey or declaration before arrival; the airline or the handler tells us which applies
direct from Britain, usually none
Money
up to 3,000 Ethiopian birr can be brought in or out; cash worth more than 10,000 US dollars must be declared, and a British resident of Ethiopia must declare more than 4,000 US dollars; exchange receipts are worth keeping, since leftover birr may not be changed back without one
declare in the hall
Equipment
satellite phones, binoculars and drones need prior approval from the Ethiopian security and information agency and may be confiscated without it; filming and audio gear can fall under special rules, and journalists need a media entry clearance before they travel; antiques need an export certificate, ivory is illegal to buy or own, and khat may not be taken out
check before you pack

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Most other nationalities do.

Read the travel advice before you book

The British government publishes advice for Ethiopia region by region, and the list is long. It advises against all travel to the whole of Tigray, Amhara and Gambela, to the strips along the borders with Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia and Kenya, and to parts of Afar, Oromia, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz, and against all but essential travel to several further areas, among them most of the East Shewa zone of Oromia. It also records fighting in the north, high tension with Eritrea, and flights across the north that may be suspended at short notice.

For a private traveller the practical meaning is plain. Addis Ababa and the road south to Hawassa are outside the restricted areas, and the advice excepts the expressway to Adama and the corridor to Bishoftu. The historic north, with Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Axum, lies inside the regions covered by the strongest warning, and we do not plan or quote private flights there. The advice also warns that travel insurance can be invalid for a journey made against it. We read the advice against your itinerary before we quote and again close to departure, and a flight is confirmed only when the operator holds the route, the permissions and the insurance cover in writing. If airspace is closed, the flight does not operate, and the practical alternative is the nearest open airport and a ground transfer, which we price on request.

Which airport for which part of Ethiopia

Ethiopia is big, the roads are slow and the fields are few. What matters is where the party sleeps:

Addis Ababa: the African Union, the embassies and the ministries
the capital stands at 2,355 metres, and Bole is about 6 km south-east of the centre, so most meetings are a short drive from the aircraft
Addis Ababa Bole
Hawassa and the Rift Valley lakes
Hawassa lies about 273 km south of the capital on the Trans-African Highway 4, on the shore of its lake; a Pilatus PC-12 flies the sector in under an hour
Hawassa, by turboprop or by road
Arba Minch and the southern lakes
the airport lies about 5 km north-east of the town, at 1,187 metres, and receives a scheduled service from the capital
Arba Minch, by turboprop
Dire Dawa and Harar
Dire Dawa has the second international airport, and Harar, with its walled old town and its 82 mosques, stands about 500 km from the capital; the road section is checked against the British advice before we plan it
Dire Dawa
Bale Mountains
the national park lies about 400 km south-east of the capital, with the Sanetti Plateau and the 4,385 metre summit of Tullu Dimtu; no airport on this page serves it, so the trip is by road from Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa Bole, then by road
Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Axum
the historic circuit of the north, which falls inside the regions the British government advises against visiting
not planned

Addis Ababa, the Rift Valley and the east: what our clients go for

Diplomacy comes first. Addis Ababa is the headquarters of the African Union and of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and many states keep large embassies in the city. Delegations arrive for summits, ministerial meetings and negotiations, with a protocol officer, a security team and a tight programme, and a private aircraft keeps to a timetable that scheduled flights cannot guarantee.

Business is the second reason. Investors, contractors and exporters make the trip, and some go on to Hawassa, 273 km to the south, where an industrial park devoted to apparel stands on the outskirts.

Travel is the third reason. The Rift Valley lakes, the southern lakes around Arba Minch and the Bale Mountains offer scenery and wildlife, and Harar, in the east, is a walled town on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The northern circuit of rock-hewn churches and ancient capitals that fills the guidebooks is another matter, covered in the section on arrivals.

One detail catches visitors out. The Ethiopian year has twelve months of 30 days and a short thirteenth month of five or six days, its year number is seven or eight years behind the western one, and the new year falls on 11 September, or 12 September in the year before a leap year. A document dated by the Ethiopian calendar can disagree with a western diary by about a week in the day, so a date on an invitation letter is confirmed in both.

The Ethiopian year: a high plateau with a long rainy season

Addis Ababa stands at 2,355 metres, and that altitude keeps the temperature gentle all year, with daytime highs between 21 and 26 degrees. The rain, not the heat, is what changes from month to month:

October to January
the dry spell: highs of about 23 to 24 degrees and rainfall of 5 to 32 millimetres a month, with November the driest at about 5 millimetres; the best weather for travel on the plateau
dry season
February to May
the short rains: highs of 25 to 26 degrees, the warmest months of the year, and rainfall rising from about 34 millimetres in February to about 91 in April
warm, with showers
June to September
the long wet season: highs of 21 to 24 degrees, the coolest months, and the heaviest rain in July and August, at about 238 and 242 millimetres a month
rainy season

The airfield is high, and the aircraft feels it

Bole stands at 2,334 metres. At that height the air is thin, and an aircraft needs a longer run to take off and carries less for a given weight. The 3,800 metre runway leaves a wide margin on the ground, but a long sector home with full tanks and a full cabin can limit the payload, and operators sometimes plan a fuel stop on the way back. We ask for the payload to be confirmed in the quote. Passengers arriving from sea level may feel breathless on the first day.

The Ethiopian calendar: summit week, Timkat and Meskel

A handful of dates fill the hotels and the airport apron in Addis Ababa, and some follow the Ethiopian calendar, so the western date is checked for the year of travel:

Early January
Genna, the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, which falls in the first week of January and brings families together, many of them travelling from abroad
19 January
Timkat, the Epiphany feast, on 19 January or 20 January in a leap year. Priests carry the tabot, a model of the Ark of the Covenant, in procession to water, and the feast is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage
February
The ordinary summit of the African Union, which is held at its headquarters in Addis Ababa and puts heads of state and delegations on the apron in the same few days
27 September
Meskel, which falls on 27 September or 28 September in a leap year. The celebration in the capital is held at Meskel Square, with a bonfire, the demera, lit in the evening, and it is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage
November
The Great Ethiopian Run, a 10 km race through the capital that draws tens of thousands of runners and closes streets for the morning

What an event does to a flight plan

Summit week and the feast days tighten the supply of long-range aircraft and the slots on the commercial side of the apron, and hotels in the capital fill early. A booking made three or four weeks before the African Union summit or Timkat is simpler and cheaper than one made in the last week.

The cabin is not the problem: the animal sits beside you for the eight hours. The paperwork is the problem. Ethiopia asks for an import permit before the animal travels, and Britain does not treat Ethiopia as a listed country, so an animal coming home needs a rabies blood test planned months before the flight.

The one fact to read before you book

Every dog and cat entering Ethiopia needs an import permit from the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, applied for before the animal travels, and the number of the permit is written on the British export health certificate. For a dog, GOV.UK lists a certificate for Ethiopia that an Official Veterinarian completes shortly before departure. We confirm the certificate for a cat, and the permit conditions, with the British and Ethiopian authorities for your dates.

Agencies that specialise in animal travel summarise the Ethiopian rabies condition as a vaccination given more than 30 days and less than 12 months before entry. The animal enters through Addis Ababa Bole, where the veterinary officials are told in advance.

  • A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination, as the return to Britain requires;
  • A rabies vaccination given at least 30 days, and not more than 12 months, before entry to Ethiopia, and at least 21 days before the return to Britain;
  • The Ethiopian import permit and the export health certificate, completed by an Official Veterinarian, with the vaccination record attached;
  • For the return, a rabies blood test, because Ethiopia is not listed, and a Great Britain pet health certificate; GOV.UK counts three months from the date of the blood sample before an animal from a non-listed country may travel to Britain;
  • For dogs only, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. A cat needs no treatment.

An approved travel route for the return is the last item. GOV.UK tells owners to check it, and its guidance does not say how the rule applies to a private aircraft, so we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight. An animal that does not meet the rules can be placed in quarantine for up to four months at the owner's expense, and an animal that does not meet the Ethiopian conditions can be quarantined or sent back at the importer's cost.

The dates run in two directions at once. The tapeworm window for the flight home is 24 to 120 hours, so a dog's vet visit falls in Ethiopia, near the end of the stay, and not before leaving. Requirements for ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. The sector is so long that an aircraft rarely goes there and back in a day, and many trips are one-way by nature: a delegation flies out for a summit, stays a week and the aircraft comes home or moves on.

Where Ethiopian empty legs come from

– Aircraft that take a delegation or a company party to Addis Ababa and fly back to Britain without passengers, which is the leg most often offered;

– Aircraft repositioning to Addis Ababa before the African Union summit in February, when operators move large aircraft out to Africa for the same few days;

– Regional legs between Addis Ababa, Nairobi and the Gulf, which come up when a client stays in one city and the aircraft goes on to the next.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. Typical Ethiopian empty legs:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Nairobi - Addis Ababa Phenom 300E 8 seats £3,950
Addis Ababa - Dubai Challenger 350 9 seats £11,750
Addis Ababa - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £21,950
Addis Ababa - UK (Farnborough) Praetor 600 9 seats £22,100
UK (London Luton) - Addis Ababa Praetor 600 9 seats £22,200
UK (Birmingham) - Addis Ababa Praetor 600 9 seats £22,600
UK (Manchester) - Addis Ababa Praetor 600 9 seats £22,900
UK (Edinburgh) - Addis Ababa Praetor 600 9 seats £23,750

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from London Luton to Addis Ababa at £22,200 with eight aboard comes to about £2,800 a head;

– A leg that points towards Britain is easier to find in the days after a summit or a feast, when the delegations go home, and an open return date helps.

Helicopter charter

A helicopter in Ethiopia is a tool for the edges of a trip and not an airport shuttle, and it is arranged case by case. We do not publish a standing helicopter service for the country, because the machine, the crew and the permission for each landing site come from local operators and the Ethiopian authorities and are confirmed for the date. The times below are straight-line planning estimates from the capital:

Addis Ababa to Bishoftu
to the crater lakes south-east of the capital, in place of the expressway
about 20 min
Addis Ababa to Hawassa
to the lakeside city of the Rift Valley, a morning flight in place of a long drive
about 1 h 10 min
Addis Ababa to Arba Minch
to the southern lakes, a day trip from Addis Ababa
about 1 h 50 min
Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa
to the east, for Harar, a long sector for a helicopter
about 1 h 50 min

Typical machines are the Airbus H125 and H130 for short transfers, and the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin-engine helicopter is wanted. At 2,355 metres a helicopter carries less than at sea level, which is why the load is stated in the quote. We book it alongside the jet, so the whole itinerary is quoted as one.

Before you plan around a helicopter

The Ethiopian authorities control where a helicopter may operate and over which areas, and the British advice excludes large parts of the country, so we confirm the permission for every landing site and every overflown area before we quote. A hotel lawn or a lake shore is not a site until it has been approved.

Ethiopian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

ADDIS ABABA · SUMMIT WEEK

A delegation and a protocol officer

Farnborough - Addis Ababa, Praetor 600, about 7 h 55 min · 6 pax

The dates came from the summit programme. The permit request went in well over 72 working hours ahead, the sponsor letter came from the host ministry, and the handler had the passenger details before the aircraft left Britain.

ADDIS ABABA · A SHORT STAY

Two executives and a one-night visit

London Luton - Addis Ababa, Praetor 600, about 7 h 55 min · 2 pax

They arrived in the evening, slept in the city and flew home after a morning of meetings. The crew rested in Addis Ababa, and the luggage stayed light, because a full cabin and the fuel for the long sector home would have cost payload at that altitude.

FAMILY · THE EPIPHANY FEAST

Three generations for Timkat

Birmingham - Addis Ababa, Praetor 600, about 8 h 05 min · 8 pax

The family came for the January feast. The e-visas were issued two weeks before departure, the vehicles were booked with the closed streets near the processions in mind, and the aircraft waited at Bole for the return.

RIFT VALLEY · A LAKESIDE FACTORY

A buying team and a day at Hawassa

Biggin Hill - Addis Ababa, Praetor 600, about 7 h 50 min · 4 pax

The jet landed at Bole and the team went south by road, a corridor the British advice excepts. The visit to the apparel park took a day, and the same road brought them back for the flight home.

WITH THE DOG · THE LONG LEAD TIME

Two adults and a spaniel on a posting

Biggin Hill - Addis Ababa, Praetor 600, about 7 h 50 min · 2 pax + dog

The import permit came first, then the export certificate, and the rabies blood test for the way home was taken early because Ethiopia is not a listed country. The tapeworm treatment was booked with a vet in Addis Ababa for the end of the stay.

EMPTY LEG · A FLEXIBLE RETURN

A Bole departure with a window of three days

Addis Ababa - London Luton, Praetor 600 empty leg, about 7 h 55 min · 4 pax

The client gave us a window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £22,200, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a departure on the second day of the window.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Ethiopia

1How long does it take to fly to Ethiopia by private jet?

About 7 hours 50 minutes nonstop from London Biggin Hill to Addis Ababa Bole on a Praetor 600, and 8 hours 30 minutes from Edinburgh. A smaller aircraft needs a technical stop that adds about an hour and a half. Ethiopia is three hours ahead of Britain in winter and two hours ahead in summer.

2How much does a private jet to Ethiopia cost?

From about £52,300 one way from Biggin Hill to Addis Ababa on a Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for the nonstop run. Edinburgh costs about £4,200 more on the same aircraft. Dire Dawa is £53,200 and short domestic hops from the capital start from £3,100 on a turboprop.

3Which airport should a private jet use in Ethiopia?

Addis Ababa Bole International (ADD / HAAB) for almost every trip: open round the clock, customs on site, handling compulsory, with a VIP terminal for heads of state and diplomats. Dire Dawa (DIR / HADR) is the second international airport, with shorter hours. Hawassa and Arba Minch are domestic fields reached by a local operator from the capital.

4Do British passengers need a visa and a permit for a private flight to Ethiopia?

Yes, every British passenger needs a visa, applied for on the official Ethiopian e-visa platform before the flight. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival. The aircraft needs a landing permit from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, with a local sponsor for a passenger visit, and handler guidance quotes 72 working hours of lead time.

5Can I fly a private jet to Lalibela or the north of Ethiopia?

We do not plan private charters to the north. The British government advises against all travel to Tigray and Amhara, the regions around Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Axum, and warns that flights across the north may be suspended at short notice. Addis Ababa and the road south to Hawassa lie outside those warnings, and we read the advice against your itinerary before we quote.

6Can I take my dog or cat to Ethiopia on a private jet?

Yes, in the cabin, but start early. The animal needs an Ethiopian import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and a UK export health certificate completed by an Official Veterinarian. For the return Ethiopia is not a listed country, so it needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a rabies blood test, a Great Britain pet health certificate and, for dogs, a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. We confirm each step in writing.
