Private jet charter in Estonia

Estonia sits about 1,000 nautical miles north-east of London, close to three hours in a light jet, and its clocks run two hours ahead of Britain all year. Private Jets UK treats it as a country of one big gateway and four small ones: Tallinn takes the jets, while Tartu, Pärnu, Kuressaare on Saaremaa and Kärdla on Hiiumaa are the places where a flight from Britain can also clear the border close to the destination. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Estonia that service matters on the ground: it decides whether a summer guest steps off the aircraft a few minutes from a Baltic beach or waits for the ferry at Virtsu, and whether a winter delegation leaves on time or waits for a de-icing truck.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Estonia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London City Airport, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ nonstop to Tallinn and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Estonia?

Estonia keeps Eastern European time, two hours ahead of Britain, and both countries change their clocks on the same weekends, so the difference holds through the year. The sectors below are from British airfields to Tallinn unless stated, gate to gate:

London City, Citation CJ3+
nonstop, 998 nautical miles with the routing allowance, the same figure from Luton
about 2 h 45 min
Biggin Hill, Citation CJ3+
nonstop, 1,006 nautical miles
about 2 h 50 min
Manchester, Citation XLS+
nonstop, 1,002 nautical miles
about 2 h 40 min
Edinburgh, Challenger 350
nonstop, 958 nautical miles, a little shorter than the run from London
about 2 h 30 min
Glasgow, Challenger 350
nonstop, 994 nautical miles
about 2 h 35 min
London City to Kuressaare, Citation CJ3+
nonstop, 904 nautical miles, the westernmost landing in the country
about 2 h 35 min

Almost three hours out, two hours on the clock

A CJ3+ that leaves London City at eight in the morning lands in Tallinn at about a quarter to one in the afternoon local time. That leaves a working afternoon in the capital, and an evening flight back is possible, though most Estonian programmes run to a night or more.

Three jobs are done before the aircraft moves: the handler at Tallinn is appointed, the permit question is answered, and the border plan is set for the first Estonian landing. We start all three on the day the request arrives.

Airline or private jet: where the aircraft earns its price

– For one traveller with a single meeting in Tallinn a scheduled seat is the cheaper answer, and the capital has airline links to London;

– A private aircraft wins when the party is three or more, when the plans take in the capital and an island in the same trip, or when the destination is a spa on the coast and the scheduled option means a change in Helsinki or Riga and a long drive.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The cheapest departures are London City and Luton on a Citation CJ3+, both £13,350. Biggin Hill on the same type is £13,450 and Farnborough on a Phenom 300E is £13,750. Past the south-east the price climbs by thousands of pounds, because the hourly rate of a larger cabin rises faster than its speed does: Manchester on a Citation XLS+ is £16,600 and Glasgow on a Challenger 350 is £20,450;

– Tallinn is the reference, not always the cheapest landing. From London City the same CJ3+ is £12,250 to Kuressaare, £12,550 to Kärdla and £13,000 to Pärnu, against £13,800 to Tartu. The quote includes the handler's fee and landing charges, so the figure does not grow at the airport.

Private jet flights within Estonia and to its neighbours

Estonia is small and mostly coast: more than 2,000 islands lie off the mainland. Tartu is some 169 km from Tallinn in a straight line, Pärnu about 117 km, and Saaremaa is the far side of a ferry crossing. A turboprop covers any of these sectors in well under an hour.

Two things worth knowing about these sectors

– The short hops sit inside the minimum charge. Helsinki (30 min), Riga (45 min) and Vilnius (1 h 05 min) cost the same £5,300 on a Citation CJ3+, because the minimum, not the distance, sets the price. The island sectors are short enough for a PC-12 to be the right aircraft: Tallinn to Kuressaare is only about 194 km;

– Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen and Warsaw make the second ring, with Berlin beyond them, and Nice stands in for the long sectors to the Mediterranean. The three Baltic capitals are all inside Schengen, so a hop between them involves no passport control.

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Estonia:

Light jets

The class behind the price in the title. Four to six people reach Tallinn nonstop from the London fields in under three hours. The same class fits the island runways, 2,000 metres at Kuressaare and 1,520 at Kärdla.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h

Midsize

The usual pick from the Midlands and the north of England, and for a party with ski gear or a week of luggage. A Citation XLS+ or a Latitude gives a standing cabin and a hold that takes the bags, and it still fits the runways at Tartu and Pärnu.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h

Super-midsize and large

For delegations, families travelling with staff and the northern departures from Scotland and Northern Ireland. Tallinn has 3,480 metres of runway, so size is a question of the stand and the winter de-icing queue, not of the concrete.

Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h

Heavy and ultra-long range

For ten or more passengers, or when Tallinn is one stop of a longer programme to the Gulf or Asia. A large cabin is checked against the handler's stand and hangar space before a figure is sent.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Turboprops

The aircraft for Tallinn to Tartu, Pärnu or the islands, and for the short hops to Helsinki or Riga when speed is not worth a jet's price. Not for the crossing from Britain, where a jet is faster and costs no more.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

For an Estonian booking the best aircraft is rarely in Estonia. The nearest suitable jet may stand in Britain, in Finland or in Sweden, so the positioning leg can change the price more than the choice of model. We look at the whole map before a number is sent.

Business aviation airports in Estonia

A flight from Britain arrives from outside the Schengen area, so the first Estonian landing has to be at an aerodrome with a customs and border service. The Estonian AIP names five such aerodromes: Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, Kuressaare and Kärdla. The facts below come from the AIP, and every opening time and handler is confirmed in writing before a flight:

Airport Ground How it operates
Tallinn, Lennart Meri
TLL / EETN
about 5 km south-east of the centre, with a tram line into the city The gateway for every jet that is not bound for an island or the south. One runway, 08/26, of 3,480 m by 45 m, the longest in the Baltic states, with a Category II ILS at both ends. The Estonian AIP lists customs, immigration, security, handling and de-icing as available round the clock, with Jet A-1 and hangar space for visiting aircraft by arrangement. Handling is compulsory and the AIP names AS Tallinn Airport GH as the handler; an industry directory also lists Clearway Handling & Operations as an FBO on the field. A business hangar complex of 5,230 square metres stands on the airfield, and general aviation parks on Apron Y5, usually behind a follow-me vehicle
Tartu, Ülenurme
TAY / EETU
about 11 km south-south-west of the university town The field for south Estonia. One runway, 08/26, of about 1,800 m by 31 m, with a Category I ILS approach to 26. Customs and immigration are listed round the clock on one hour's notice, and Jet A-1 is supplied on the same notice. Flying schools and medical flights share the airfield, and the runway suits light and midsize jets better than large ones
Pärnu
EPU / EEPU
about 2.4 nautical miles north-west of the resort town The airport of the summer coast. One asphalt runway, 03/21, of 1,970 m by 30 m, with satellite-based approaches instead of an ILS. Customs and immigration work every day in daytime hours with an hour's notice, and a fuel order above 1,000 litres needs 48 hours. The operator asks pilots to avoid low flying over the town at night
Kuressaare, Saaremaa
URE / EEKE
about 1.5 nautical miles south-south-east of the island town The airfield of Estonia's largest island. A main runway, 17/35, of 2,000 m by 30 m and a short second one of 799 m, customs open every day and handling by arrangement with the airport. It takes light and midsize jets and is the nearest landing for the castle, the island spas and the summer opera
Kärdla, Hiiumaa
KDL / EEKA
about 2.7 nautical miles east of the town A small field on the second-largest island. One asphalt runway, 14/32, of 1,520 m by 30 m, with satellite approaches but no ILS, and a displaced threshold that leaves 1,280 m of landing distance on 32. The AIP lists Jet A1, handling and de-icing on weekday and shortened weekend hours, customs and immigration on 24 hours' notice, and no hangar or repair facilities. Light jets are the realistic choice here

Four points settle most Estonian arrivals before a quote goes out:

The permit: private or paid, the answer differs

A private flight under the Chicago Convention needs no permission. A charter by a foreign operator that sets down or picks up passengers in Estonia needs permission from the Transport Administration, asked for at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and public holidays. We say which case your trip is when we send the offer.

The handler: agreed in advance

Handling at Tallinn is compulsory, and the terms are settled with the handler before the flight. The handler files the general declaration, orders fuel and the stand, tells the driver which door to wait at and arranges de-icing in winter. The AIP shows no slot system and no curfew for Tallinn.

The first landing: five fields, two kinds of hours

Tallinn is open at all hours and Tartu at all hours with an hour's notice. Pärnu keeps daytime hours, Kuressaare is open daily, and Kärdla needs a day's notice for customs. A late concert in Pärnu or an evening on Saaremaa has to be planned around the airfield's day, not the table's.

The flight inside Schengen: any aerodrome

Once the aircraft has cleared at its first Estonian landing, a flight on to another Estonian airfield or to Riga, Vilnius or Helsinki is a flight within Schengen, and any aerodrome will do. That is why one customs stop at Tallinn can still end the day on an island.

Winter at the stand: de-icing and hangars

The January average in Tallinn is about minus 3 degrees Celsius, and a heavy snowfall puts de-icing slots and hangar space under pressure. De-icing is done by the handler at the stand or at a holding point and adds minutes to a departure. We book it early, keep Helsinki or Riga in mind as a plan B, and give the car company the handler's name as well as the flight number.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Estonia is a full member of the Schengen area and Britain is outside it, so the border check takes place at the first landing. At Tallinn the handler arranges the arrival formalities, and we confirm in writing which facility receives the party.

Passports
British citizens may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa; the passport must have been issued less than ten years before arrival and expire at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
every passenger, children included
Entry/Exit System
a photo and fingerprints are taken from short-stay visitors, and children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted
allow a few extra minutes on a first visit
Authorisation
the British government's Estonia entry advice does not mention the EU's online ETIAS authorisation; where it applies to a British passport on your date, we tell you before the offer, not on the apron
we check for your date
Declaration
anything prohibited or subject to tax or duty has to be declared, and meat and milk products cannot be brought into the EU, with narrow exceptions for baby food, medically required food and pet food
declare when in doubt
Aircraft paperwork
for a private flight from a country outside the EU the pilot sends a general declaration with the passenger data to the police before take-off
we prepare it with the handler
Cash
a declaration is due at customs if you carry cash worth ten thousand in the EU's own currency or more, a rule that applies on every entry to the EU
declare it at the first landing

The way home and the passenger who is not British

Coming back is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, while most other nationalities do.

A passenger with another passport should tell us at the start. The visa position for Estonia and the authorisation for Britain are different questions, and each takes longer to settle than a flight takes to book.

Which airport for which part of Estonia

Estonia looks small on a map and takes time on the ground, because the roads run to Tallinn and ferries do the rest. These are the distances that matter, and winter adds to every one of them:

Tallinn, the north coast and Lahemaa
the capital and its Old Town; Lahemaa National Park with its manor houses at Palmse, Sagadi, Vihula and Kolga lies about 70 km to the east
Tallinn
Tartu, Otepää and the south
Tartu is about 186 km south-east of Tallinn and the Otepää ski and cross-country area lies beyond it; a south Estonian programme gains hours by landing at the southern field
Tartu, or Tallinn for the capital first
Pärnu and the south-west coast
Pärnu is 128 km south of Tallinn, the beach resort town of the country, with the mud baths and the long summer evenings
Pärnu
Saaremaa and Muhu
the largest island is reached by ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu on Muhu and a causeway beyond it, so landing at Kuressaare spares the crossing
Kuressaare
Hiiumaa
the second-largest island is a 28 km, 75-minute ferry crossing from Rohuküla on the mainland to Heltermaa, with up to ten departures a day
Kärdla, for light jets
Haapsalu and the west coast
the town of the bishop's castle and the mud cure has no customs airfield of its own, so it is reached from Tallinn by road or by helicopter, or from Pärnu or Kärdla
Tallinn
Helsinki and the northern shore
two to three and a half hours by ferry, 57 nautical miles by air; the Finnish capital makes sense as a combined trip or as a plan B
Tallinn, then onward

Tallinn, the university town and the islands: what our clients go for

About 1.36 million people live in a country of 45,335 square kilometres, half of it forest, and the highest point is a hill of 318 metres, Suur Munamägi. Most business goes to Tallinn. The Old Town is a UNESCO site, Toompea hill holds the parliament, Kadriorg park lies two kilometres east of the centre, and the old factories of Telliskivi, Noblessner and Rotermann have turned into offices, studios and restaurants.

Tartu is the second reason to land. Its university was founded in 1632, and a city of about 97,000 people is built around it: Toome Hill with the ruins of the cathedral, the Kissing Students monument on the town hall square, the AHHAA science centre, the Estonian National Museum and the Vanemuine theatre, the oldest Estonian-language theatre in the country. Hanseatic Days fill the old town with crafts and jousting in the summer.

The coast is where the leisure traffic goes. Pärnu has long been called the summer capital of Estonia, a town of about 41,500 people with wide beaches, a stone mud bath house from the 1920s and some 1,950 hours of sunshine a year, most of them from May to July. Haapsalu, further north, has a bishop's castle with the largest single-nave church in Estonia, a mud cure resort founded in 1825, shawls that made the town known and a Tchaikovsky piano suite written during a stay there.

Then the islands. Saaremaa covers 2,673 square kilometres and has about 31,000 residents; Kuressaare Castle, begun in 1380, is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in the country, the first spa opened in the town in 1840, and the Kaali group of nine meteorite craters lies inland. Hiiumaa is smaller, with 989 square kilometres and fewer than 10,000 people, and its Kõpu lighthouse, built by the Hanseatic League around the start of the 16th century, is counted the third-oldest working lighthouse in the world. In some winters an ice road, 26.5 km long, opens across the frozen sea from Hiiumaa to the mainland.

The Estonian year: snow, white nights and a short festival summer

There is no dead season in Tallinn, but the private-jet calendar follows the dark months, the white nights and the festival weeks:

December to March
the Christmas tree and market on the Town Hall Square from mid-November until almost the end of January, cross-country skiing around Otepää, and the Tartu Marathon in February; in some winters the sea freezes hard enough for ice roads to the islands
Tallinn or Tartu
April to June
Tallinn Music Week and Jazzkaar in April, Kalamaja Days in mid-May, Old Town Days in late May and Midsummer Eve on 23 June, when the country goes out of town to light bonfires
Tallinn and Pärnu
July to August
the busiest weeks on the coast and the islands: Medieval Days in Tallinn, the Viljandi folk music festival, the Saaremaa Opera Festival, the I Land Sound festival, Hanseatic Days in Tartu, the Haapsalu blues festival and the Birgitta festival
Kuressaare, Pärnu, Tartu
September to November
the Tallinn Marathon and the Wandering Lights festival in September, the Saaremaa Rally in October, the Tallinn Digital Summit in the autumn and the Black Nights Film Festival from mid-November
Tallinn

At Tallinn's latitude the summer nights never go fully dark, but there is no midnight sun: the sun rises at about four in the morning and sets a little before eleven at night. A dinner at ten in June is still eaten in daylight.

The Estonian calendar: song festivals, island opera and film nights

Dated events fill an apron fastest, and several of them concentrate private flights on a single field:

Every five years, June and July
The Song and Dance Celebration gathers a choir of more than 30,000 singers on the Song Festival Grounds in Tallinn, with an audience of around 80,000; hotels and cars across the capital are typically booked months ahead
April
Tallinn Music Week fills the clubs and halls of the city with nearly 200 artists, and Jazzkaar, the largest jazz festival in the Baltics, runs from April into May
Late May
Old Town Days run for about a week from late May into early summer, with markets, music and costumed events in the streets of the medieval centre
23 June
Midsummer Eve empties Tallinn for the coast and the islands, which suits a landing at Pärnu, Kuressaare or Kärdla better than one in the capital
July
The Saaremaa Opera Festival raises a temporary 2,000-seat opera house in the Bishop's Castle at Kuressaare, the Viljandi Folk Music Festival draws traditional-music fans to Viljandi, and the I Land Sound festival plays at Orissaare on Saaremaa
August
The August Blues Festival fills Haapsalu Castle with blues from the United States and Europe, and the Tallinn Fringe Festival opens its theatre, dance and circus programme, which runs on into September
February
The Tartu Marathon, 63 km on skis between Otepää and Tartu, with a 31 km version, a relay and children's races
Mid-November
The Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Northern Europe's largest, runs for two weeks of screenings, parties and talks

What an Estonian peak does to a flight plan

The pinch points are the Song Celebration years, Midsummer, the July island festivals and the Black Nights fortnight. Kuressaare is a small island field with a 2,000-metre runway, so the handler, the stand and the hotel car come first, then the seat on the ferry as the fallback. A request sent as soon as the dates are known gives every one of them time to line up.

Flying to Estonia with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travels in the cabin with you, and the paperwork has two halves: the European set for the flight out and one vet appointment for the flight home. Estonia applies the rules of the European Union, and its veterinary service publishes the conditions for animals arriving from outside the EU on the website of the Agriculture and Food Board.

The one fact to read before you book

The animal needs an ISO microchip, and the rabies vaccination must come after the chip, from the age of 12 weeks, with 21 days to pass before travel. A health certificate from an official vet is issued for each trip and is valid for ten days for entry, and the owner signs a declaration that the move is not commercial. No more than five animals may travel with one person, and the animal has to enter through a border point open to international traffic.

Estonia does not ask for tapeworm treatment on arrival, which Finland, Ireland, Malta and Norway do. Coming home is where the diary matters: a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 and no more than 120 hours before it arrives in Great Britain, with the product, date and time entered in the document, and a cat does not. We book a vet near the hotel with the flight and count back from the departure time.

  • A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination at 12 weeks or later, with 21 days elapsed before travel;
  • An official veterinary health certificate for each trip, since a British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • For a dog on the way home, the tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing in Great Britain.

A trip that starts at Tallinn with a dog in the cabin is the straightforward case. A programme that starts at Pärnu, Kuressaare or Kärdla with an animal aboard is raised at the quote stage, because the point of entry must be agreed in writing before the flight, and if it cannot be agreed the first landing is Tallinn. Combining Estonia with a Finnish stop adds a rule: a dog entering Finland needs a tapeworm treatment on the way in, and a dog that flies directly from Finland to Great Britain needs no second one.

Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Estonia produces a steady supply of them, because most aircraft that bring a party out have to fly the long way home with an empty cabin, or fly out empty to collect people at the end of their week.

Where Estonian empty legs come from

– The summer coast and the islands: aircraft land at Pärnu or Kuressaare with guests for a long weekend, and the return leg goes unsold until the party flies home;

– The event calendar: the Song Celebration, the Saaremaa Opera Festival, Midsummer and the Black Nights fortnight bring aircraft in full and send them out empty, and the reverse happens at the end of each event;

– Business trips to Tallinn, where a jet takes executives to a meeting and goes back the same evening or the next morning, and aircraft from Helsinki, Stockholm or Riga that position to Britain for a client.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Estonian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft

Praetor 600 9 seats £7,900
UK (Edinburgh) - Estonia (Tallinn)

Challenger 350 9 seats £8,350

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Citation XLS+ from Tartu to Manchester with eight aboard comes to about £900 a head.

Helicopter charter

In Estonia a helicopter saves the road or the ferry between the airport and the destination, not the crossing from Britain. These are our estimates for the main transfers, calculated at about 115 knots with a few minutes for the start and the landing:

Tallinn to Helsinki
city to city across the Gulf of Finland, instead of a ferry of two hours or more
about 30 min
Tallinn to Pärnu
the summer capital, against a drive of 128 km
about 40 min
Tallinn to Haapsalu
the castle and the mud cure on the west coast
about 35 min
Tallinn to Lahemaa
the manor houses at Palmse and Sagadi in the national park to the east
about 30 min
Tallinn to Tartu
the university town, some 186 km away
about 55 min
Tallinn to Kuressaare
the island capital, without the ferry from Virtsu
about 60 min

These are estimates and move with the weather and the load. We confirm the aircraft, the route, the number of passengers and the baggage allowance for your date before the offer goes out.

Two points on Estonian rotary legs

A helicopter that lands away from an airfield needs a site that the operator and the landowner have agreed, and the choice is narrow near castles, manors and the old towns. Sea fog and low cloud over the gulf and the straits can stop a crossing, so the helicopter and the jet are booked together, with the road or the ferry as the fallback.

Estonian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

TALLINN · A DAY IN THE CAPITAL

Two directors, one meeting and a return the same evening

London City - Tallinn, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 45 min · 2 pax

Wheels up at eight, a car at the handler's door on landing and a long lunch with the client before the afternoon meeting. The party left Tallinn at six in the evening and was back in London before seven, which is why they chose a light jet and a single day.

PÄRNU · THE SPA WEEKEND

A couple and a three-night stay on the coast

London Luton - Pärnu, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 45 min · 2 pax

Landing at the resort's own airfield put them minutes from the hotel instead of a drive of 128 km from Tallinn. The return was timed for the afternoon, because customs at the field keep daytime hours.

KURESSAARE · THE OPERA IN THE CASTLE

Three friends and a July evening on Saaremaa

Farnborough - Kuressaare, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 25 min · 3 pax

Kuressaare was chosen over Tallinn because the road and ferry route from the capital takes most of a morning. The handler cleared customs on arrival, a hotel car met them at the apron, and they flew home the next day.

TARTU · THE MARATHON WEEKEND

Six guests for a February ski race

Birmingham - Tartu, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 50 min · 6 pax

The party landed on the southern field and drove to the start. Because winter snow can slow a departure, the handler booked de-icing in advance and the return was set for the early afternoon, with Tallinn as the fallback.

WITH THE DOG · TAPEWORM FIRST

A couple and a spaniel on a long weekend

Southampton - Tallinn, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 45 min · 2 pax + dog

The certificate was dated six days before departure, Estonia asked for no tapeworm treatment on the way out, and a vet near the hotel gave the tapeworm treatment on the Friday afternoon, inside the window for the Sunday flight home.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE FESTIVAL

A flexible return to London

Tartu - London Luton, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 2 h 55 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of two days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £5,800, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a Monday departure.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Estonia

1How long does it take to fly to Estonia by private jet?

About 2 hours 45 minutes from London City to Tallinn in a Citation CJ3+, about 2 hours 40 minutes from Manchester in a Citation XLS+ and about 2 hours 35 minutes from Glasgow in a Challenger 350. Estonia is two hours ahead of Britain all year, so a morning departure lands around midday local time.

2How much does a private jet to Estonia cost?

From about £13,350 one way from London City to Tallinn on a Citation CJ3+, the same from Luton and £13,450 from Biggin Hill. A Citation XLS+ from Manchester is about £16,600 and a Challenger 350 from Glasgow about £20,450. Kuressaare is nearer and costs about £12,250 from London City, Kärdla about £12,550 and Pärnu about £13,000.

3Which airports do private jets use in Estonia?

Tallinn is the gateway, with customs, immigration, handling and de-icing listed round the clock and a runway of 3,480 metres. Tartu serves the south, Pärnu the summer coast, Kuressaare the island of Saaremaa and Kärdla the island of Hiiumaa; all five can clear a flight from Britain, though the regional fields keep shorter hours or need notice and take light and midsize jets.

4What are the passport and customs rules for a private flight from Britain to Estonia?

British citizens may stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, and the passport must be less than ten years old on arrival and valid for three months after departure. Photos and fingerprints are taken under the Entry/Exit System. The first Estonian landing must be at Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, Kuressaare or Kärdla, and the pilot sends a general declaration to the police before take-off. A paid charter by a foreign operator needs permission from the Transport Administration, a private flight does not, and we confirm which case applies.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Estonia?

Yes. The animal needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination given from 12 weeks and after the chip, 21 days before travel, an official health certificate valid for ten days and a declaration that the journey is not commercial. Estonia does not ask for tapeworm treatment on arrival. A dog coming home needs a treatment 24 to 120 hours before it lands in Great Britain, so we book a vet for the day before the flight, and we confirm in writing which airport receives the animal.

6How early should I book a private jet to Estonia?

As soon as the dates are known, and at least three working days ahead for a paid charter by a foreign operator, since the Transport Administration asks for 48 hours not counting weekends and public holidays. The Song Celebration years, Midsummer, the July island festivals and the Black Nights fortnight fill the aprons first, and winter mornings need de-icing booked early.
