Private jet charter in Italy

From London, Italy is really two destinations for a charter broker: the north, which a light jet reaches in under two hours, and the long south, where Palermo or Lampedusa stretches the same flight to about three hours. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you the most favorable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Before we quote an Italian trip we ask for the hotel, the villa or the marina, not the city, because the airport that suits a dinner on Lake Como is not the one that suits a yacht in Porto Cervo, and the difference is counted in hours of road.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Italy depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: departure from London Biggin Hill Airport, a Cessna Citation CJ3+, arrival at Milan Linate, two passengers. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Italy?

Italy is a long country, and the flight time from London depends on which part of it you aim for. The nearest jet field, in the Aosta valley, is about 462 nautical miles away, and the farthest we price, Lampedusa, about 1,138. These are the sectors from London Biggin Hill, gate to gate, in a light jet:

London to Turin
496 nautical miles to the nearest large Italian airport, and the field for Turin and the western Alps
about 1 h 45 min
London to Milan Linate
530 nautical miles to the terminal closest to the city, and the sector most clients start with
about 1 h 50 min
London to Venice
626 nautical miles to the lagoon, with Cortina and the Dolomites behind it by road or by helicopter
about 2 h
London to Olbia
769 nautical miles to the Costa Smeralda, a summer airfield that fills up from late May
about 2 h 25 min
London to Rome Ciampino
801 nautical miles to the field where general aviation is steered in the capital
about 2 h 25 min
London to Naples
895 nautical miles for the Amalfi coast, Capri and Pompeii
about 2 h 40 min
London to Palermo
1,002 nautical miles for western Sicily, close to three hours
about 2 h 55 min
London to Lampedusa
1,138 nautical miles to the farthest Italian airfield we price
about 3 h 15 min

North Italy is a short hop, the south is a different trip

Turin is 1 h 45 min from Biggin Hill, Milan 1 h 50 min, Venice 2 h, Rome and Olbia about two and a half hours, and Sicily close to three. Beyond Rome we usually move a party into a midsize or super-midsize cabin and say so in the quote. From Manchester add about 20 minutes to any of these times, and from Edinburgh about 45.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Prices for the private jet flights to Italy

Typical one-way prices from British airports into Italy, listed cheapest first. The rows run the length of the country on purpose, so the table shows how the price follows the map: a light jet to Milan and the Ligurian coast at the bottom, and a large-cabin aircraft for Rome, the south and the islands at the top:

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– A one-way price includes the empty flight home of the aircraft. That is why £7,900 from Biggin Hill to Linate is not half of a return, and why the same jet booked there and back in one go costs noticeably less per direction than two separate one-way trips;

– The steps in the table are changes of aircraft, not of service: a light jet to Milan and Genoa, a midsize cabin for Tuscany, a larger one for Sardinia, and a large-cabin jet for Rome, Naples and everything south of them. Most of the gap between Stansted to Genoa at £8,600 and Birmingham to Rome at £18,800 is distance rather than comfort.

Private jet flights within Italy and to its neighbours

Inside Italy the sectors are short and the ground is slow: mountains, coastal roads and the sea are what a jet shortens. These are the pairs we are asked for most, within the country and across its borders:

Two things worth knowing about the Italian sectors

– A non-EU operator may not carry passengers on a domestic Italian leg that has nothing to do with its international flight. A British aircraft flies the internal legs of the journey it brought you on, and a stand-alone hop, say Milan to Palermo, goes to an aircraft based in Italy or elsewhere in the EU;

– The price per mile is highest on the shortest legs. Rome to Naples at £3,100 is a floor, not a bargain, and on pairs like that a car or a train is a fair alternative, which we will say. A jet earns its fee on long pairs such as Milan to Bari at £8,400, and on island hops.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Turboprops

For the short hops inside the country, Milan to Genoa or Rome to Naples, and for the small fields where a jet will not fit. On the run from Britain a turboprop is too slow to be worth quoting.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · up to 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 250 · 7 seatsfrom £1,500/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h
Piaggio P180 Avanti II · 8 seatsfrom £2,000/h

Light jets

The default for Milan, Turin, Genoa and the Alpine fields from the south of England. Check the hold before the seats: ski bags, or a fashion-week wardrobe, fill a light cabin faster than the seat count suggests.

Cessna Citation Mustang · 4 seatsfrom £1,750/h
Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 8 seatsfrom £2,350/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,500/h
Bombardier Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h

Super-midsize

Where Rome, Olbia and Naples settle from the south of England, and where a party of eight lands whatever the sector. Enough cabin to work in on a flight of two and a half hours.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £2,850/h
Embraer Legacy 500 · 9 seatsfrom £3,200/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,500/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Heavy jets

For Scottish departures to Rome and the south, for Sicily and Puglia from anywhere, for a larger party, and for the corporate group that wants a conference table rather than a row of seats.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,850/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,850/h

Ultra-long range

Rare on any Italian sector, since all of Italy sits inside the range of a midsize jet from London. A Milan or Rome arrival by one of these usually belongs to a longer itinerary and not to a London sector.

Dassault Falcon 8X · 14 seatsfrom £6,250/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,450/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,750/h

Business aviation airports in Italy

About two dozen Italian airports can take a business jet from Britain with customs on the spot; the rest are flying-club strips, seaplane bases and heliports that a charter cannot use. These are the fields our bookings rely on, north to south:

Airport Ground How it operates
The north and the Alps
Milan Linate
LIN / LIML
about 7 km to the centre The city airport and the default for private traffic: a 2,442 metre runway, Sky Services and Signature at the general aviation terminal, and customs on site. Listed as coordinated, although one directory says general aviation needs no slot, so we confirm in writing
Milan Malpensa
MXP / LIMC
about 49 km to the centre The intercontinental hub, open round the clock, with a 3,920 metre runway and Milano Prime for private traffic. Right for widebodies and long stays
Milan Bergamo
BGY / LIME
about 45 minutes to Milan BGY Executive has its own customs post and two handlers, and the runway is 2,874 metres. Between 22:00 and 05:00 local time take-offs use runway 10 only. The overflow field for Milan
Turin Caselle
TRN / LIMF
about 15 km to the centre A 3,300 metre runway, one general aviation terminal and ESAIR Handling. Prior permission is listed for every general aviation flight, and slots are required
Aosta
AOT / LIMW
about 3 km to the town A valley field with a 1,499 metre runway, customs on about three hours' notice and compulsory handling. Light jets and helicopters; Courmayeur is about 35 km away
Genoa
GOA / LIMJ
about 7 km to the centre A 2,916 metre runway on an artificial peninsula, open round the clock, with slots required. Delta Aerotaxi and Da Vinci FBO have lounges. The airport for Portofino
Albenga Riviera
ALL / LIMG
about 6 km to Albenga A runway of about 1,430 metres for turboprops and light to midsize jets. Hadid Riviera runs the terminal. Hours are 08:30 to 18:30 in winter and 08:00 to 20:00 in summer, local time. No slots
Veneto, the Dolomites and the north-east
Venice Marco Polo
VCE / LIPZ
about 8 km to the old city Two runways, the longer of 3,300 metres. An airport of entry open round the clock, where prior permission, not a slot, is the paperwork. The terminal has its own boat dock
Treviso
TSF / LIPH
about 31 km to Venice A 2,420 metre runway with Sky Services and Treviso Corporate Aviation. The overflow for Venice and the nearer field for Cortina
Verona Villafranca
VRN / LIPX
about 10 km to the centre A 3,068 metre runway, open round the clock, with five handlers. Prior permission is needed because stands are limited. Lake Garda and the Veronafiere fairs
Bolzano
BZO / LIPB
about 4 km to the centre A 1,432 metre runway with no ILS, for turboprops and light jets. Every instrument approach needs the airport's authorisation, tied to the pilot. ABD Airport is the only handler
Bologna
BLQ / LIPE
about 6 km to the centre A 2,800 metre runway. TAG Bologna runs the general aviation terminal, with services round the clock, and handling is compulsory. The base for the Motor Valley
Tuscany and the centre
Florence Peretola
FLR / LIRQ
about 5 km to the centre About 1,560 metres of runway, so light and midsize jets. Every flight needs prior permission, handling is compulsory, and Italy FBO runs the terminal
Pisa Galilei
PSA / LIRP
about 85 km to Florence A main runway of about 3,000 metres, an airport of entry open round the clock, with slots required. Delta Aerotaxi runs the FBO. The answer for large cabins
Rome Ciampino
CIA / LIRA
about 12 km to the centre A runway of about 2,200 metres and a terminal with customs on site, handled by Signature and Sky Services. Typically a permission number rather than a slot; general aviation is listed from 06:00 to 23:00 local time
Rome Fiumicino and Urbe
FCO / LIRF and LIRU
about 30 km and 7 km Fiumicino has no general aviation terminal and takes private jets only from 23:01 to 06:00, for up to 12 hours. Urbe, with a 1,080 metre runway, is for turboprops, the lightest jets and helicopters
The south
Naples Capodichino
NAP / LIRN
about 6 km to the centre A 2,628 metre runway. Sky Services, Alisud and Fly Service handle; slots and permission go through the airport's online system, and ground time is typically capped at two hours. Salerno's 2,000 metre field is a small-jet alternative
Bari Karol Wojtyla
BRI / LIBD
about 8 km to the centre A 3,000 metre runway, open round the clock, with Sky Services and Delta Aerotaxi as handlers. Customs and immigration run from 04:00 to 22:00 UTC. Summer parking is time-limited

Alghero and Cagliari
AHO / LIEA and CAG / LIEE
about 9 km and 7 km Runways of 3,000 and 2,804 metres, both with slots and compulsory handling. Cagliari's general aviation terminal is staffed from 08:00 to 20:00
Palermo
PMO / LICJ
about 35 km to the city Runways of 3,326 and 2,068 metres at Cinisi. Customs, compulsory handling, slots, and Fly Service in the terminal. Directories give different hours, so we confirm
Catania
CTA / LICC
about 4 km to the city One runway of about 2.5 km. Customs, compulsory handling and slots. Etna ash sometimes closes it, usually for under a day, and flights move to Palermo
Trapani and Comiso
TPS / LICT and CIY / LICB
about 15 km and 5 km Trapani shares a 2,695 metre runway with an Air Force wing and keeps weekday hours. Comiso, a former air base, has customs, optional handling and no slots
Pantelleria and Lampedusa
PNL / LICG and LMP / LICD
5 km to the town on Pantelleria Island runways of 1,675 metres and about 1,800 metres, the latter with daytime hours only in one directory. Summer extensions to a Sicilian trip

Three points settle most Italian arrivals before a quote goes out:

Milan: Linate first, Malpensa for size

Linate is where the city is, and the border is cleared in its terminal. Malpensa takes widebodies and long stays but adds roughly half an hour of road each way. Bergamo, with its own customs post, is the overflow.

Rome: a choice made for you

General aviation is steered to Ciampino, typically from 06:00 to 23:00 local time. A permission number goes into the flight plan, charters with more than 19 seats also need a slot, and the oldest noise stages are prohibited.

Runways that pick the aircraft

Florence has about 1,560 metres, Aosta 1,499, Bolzano 1,432 and Albenga about 1,430. These fields suit turboprops and light to midsize jets, and some need a crew approved for the approach.

Opening hours differ widely from field to field. Times below are local time unless marked UTC; Italy keeps UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer:

Rome Ciampino
general aviation typically accepted, seven days a week
06:00 to 23:00
Bari customs and immigration
daily, and otherwise on request
04:00 to 22:00 UTC
Albenga
twelve hours of notice are needed outside these hours
08:30 to 18:30 winter, 08:00 to 20:00 summer
Lampedusa
directories disagree, and the one that names its time zone gives UTC; no round-the-clock handling
05:00 to 21:00 UTC

Italy has no single night ban, which is not the same as having none

The limits are set airport by airport. Bergamo restricts night take-offs to one runway, Bologna steers night traffic away from the city, Rome keeps general aviation out of Fiumicino except overnight, and sources disagree on a night curfew at Naples. So an Italian evening return is planned backwards from the published closing time, confirmed in writing by the handler.

Arriving from Britain: permits, passports and customs

Italy belongs to the European Union and to Schengen, and Britain belongs to neither. A private flight from London therefore arrives as a flight from outside both, and the border is dealt with at the first Italian airport you land at. Most of the paperwork sits with the operator and the handler:

The operator's permit
a commercial flight by a non-EU aircraft needs authorisation from ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, backed by the operator's EASA third-country authorisation. For a single flight the request reaches ENAC at least three working days ahead, and a series of flights can run under one blanket permit
arranged by us
Where you first land
an airport of entry with customs and border police; small fields and the lake seaplane base cannot be the arrival point, and domestic legs follow from there
airport of entry
Passports
up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa; the passport must have been issued less than ten years before arrival and be valid for three months after departure. A photo and fingerprints may be taken under the EU Entry/Exit System, free of charge
every passenger, children included
Cash and food
cash or travellers cheques worth about £8,500 or more, a threshold the EU sets in its own currency, must be declared; meat, milk and products containing them cannot be brought in
declare, do not carry

Two points belong to the aircraft. The financial police have been reported to check foreign-registered private aircraft, mostly in the north-east, for ownership, customs and VAT status; a charter on a licensed operator's certificate answers that at once. And for the way home the operator files a General Aviation Report with UK customs between 48 and 2 hours before departure, and passengers who are not British or Irish citizens may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

Which airport for which part of Italy

An Italian booking is almost always settled by an address: the hotel in Cortina, the office in Milan, the villa above Positano. These are the pairings behind most of our Italian private jet bookings:

Milan and Lake Como
the Quadrilatero, the fairs and the banks; the lake has no jet airport
Linate or Malpensa
Turin and the western Alps
Turin for the city and the nearer resorts, Aosta for Courmayeur when the aircraft suits the field
Turin or Aosta
Venice, Cortina and the Dolomites
about 148 km to Cortina from Venice and 137 km from Treviso
Venice or Treviso
Liguria and Portofino
the Riviera from Genoa to the French border
Genoa or Albenga
Tuscany and Emilia
Florence for the city, Pisa for large cabins, Bologna for the Motor Valley
Florence, Pisa or Bologna
Rome, Naples and Amalfi
the capital by Ciampino, the coast and Capri through Naples
Ciampino or Naples
Sardinia
Olbia for the Costa Smeralda, Alghero for the north-west, Cagliari for the south
Olbia, Alghero or Cagliari
Sicily
Palermo and the north coast, Catania for Etna and Taormina, Comiso for the south-east
Palermo, Catania or Comiso

Two things that shape an Italian booking

– The address decides the airport more often than the region does. Tell us the village, not just the coast, and we will choose the field and the last leg together;

– A short flight can hide a long transfer. Naples to Positano is about 80 km and an hour and a half, and Venice to Cortina about two hours, which is why the helicopter is a normal part of an Italian booking.

Where the jet stops: the lakes, the Riviera, Capri and the Dolomites

Several places clients name first have no airport a charter jet can use. That is a planning step, not a problem, and the usual answer for each is below:

Lake Como
the seaplane base at Como is a water runway of about 900 metres, open by day to visual flights, with no customs; Villa d'Este quotes 60 km and 48 minutes from Malpensa and 70 km and an hour from Linate
Malpensa, then car or helicopter
Portofino
about 45 km and 38 minutes by road from Genoa airport
Genoa
Monaco
under 20 minutes by helicopter from Albenga
Albenga or Nice
Cortina d'Ampezzo
137 km from Treviso and 138 km from Bolzano by road, with the old Fiames airfield used as a helicopter base
Treviso or Venice
Capri
no airport: helicopters land at Damecuta in Anacapri in under 30 minutes from Naples, and hydrofoils take 45 to 50 minutes in the season
Naples, then helicopter
Taormina
67 km and 45 to 55 minutes by road from Catania
Catania

If a quote shows a jet landing on Capri or on the shore of Lake Como, it is wrong. The airport is the first leg, the car, boat or helicopter the second, and we price and book them together.

Italian seasons: a ski winter, an island summer and a quiet shoulder

Italian private flying runs on two seasons that barely overlap, with a quieter one between them. Winter belongs to the Alps, from late November to early April at Courmayeur, and summer to the coasts and islands, from Easter on Capri and early June on Lake Como to the end of September. Each concentrates traffic on a handful of airfields.

The week that empties Italy and fills the islands

Ferragosto, on 15 August, turns the middle of the month into the busiest stretch of the year for the coasts and the quietest for the northern cities. An arrival in Sardinia or on the Amalfi coast that week needs the aircraft, handler, car and boat booked together and early. Eccelsa at Olbia puts about four fifths of its yearly traffic between late May and early October, which shows how short the season is.

The Italian calendar: fashion, design, motors and festivals

Italy has a calendar that repeats almost to the week, and each peak lands on a particular airport. Knowing which airport an event uses is as useful as knowing its date:

February
Milan Fashion Week and the Sanremo Music Festival, and Venice Carnival, which runs from late January to Shrove Tuesday
April
Salone del Mobile, the furniture fair in Milan, and Vinitaly, the wine fair in Verona

What a race or a regatta does to a flight plan

Monza in September and the Mille Miglia in early summer are weekends when hotels, helicopters and stands run out together, so the helicopter and the handler are fixed before the aircraft. Misano, in the province of Rimini, holds its motorcycle Grand Prix in September, and Imola, which hosted Formula One for many seasons, still stages endurance racing; Bologna is the airport for both.

Flying to Italy with a dog or a cat

Italy is an easy country to take an animal to by private jet. The paperwork is the standard European set, there is no list of banned breeds, and the part that needs planning is the journey home.

The one fact to read before you book

A dog or cat from Britain must enter Italy through a travellers' point of entry designated by the Italian authorities, so the first landing is chosen with the animal in mind and we confirm the airport in writing. The published lists name Malpensa, Bergamo, Fiumicino, Venice, Turin, Bologna, Verona, Naples, Bari, Catania, Palermo, Cagliari, Alghero and Ancona, but not Linate or Ciampino, so a dog bound for Milan or Rome may land at Malpensa or Fiumicino instead. The Animal Health Certificate is valid for ten days for entry into the EU, and for the return as stated on the certificate. No rabies blood test is required from Great Britain. Dogs coming home need a tapeworm treatment given by a vet between 24 hours and five days before they re-enter Great Britain, and that is the appointment to book before you leave, not after you land.

  • A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
  • Rabies vaccination at least 21 days old on the day you travel, given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, dated no more than ten days before entry, and a declaration that the journey is not commercial;
  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs on the homeward leg, recorded with the date and the product;
  • No more than five animals per person, travelling with the owner or an authorised person.

Cats need the same list without the worming. In Italy a dog must be on a lead in public places and on public transport, and a muzzle must be carried. If the itinerary continues to Malta, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment for entry there as well. There is no weight limit and no hold on a charter, so a large dog travels exactly as a small one does.

Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

Another way to fly cheaper is to use Empty Legs. This service allows you to save on regular charter rates. As you know, part of the flights is one-way (for example, when the passenger flies from England to Italy). After the flight, the jet returns to its home base (for example, to London Farnborough airport) empty. Such flight is called "Empty Legs". Empty leg flights can be as cheap as 50-75% off the standard charter price. This option is profitable for both the passengers and the charter companies. The clients can enjoy the services of business aviation at a very good price, while the airlines recoup part of the cost of fuel and jet maintenance.

It is almost impossible to find Empty Leg flights, as the information about them is stored in special databases available only to the aviation brokers and specialized companies. You should know that Empty Leg flights offer the same service as private jet charters. The passengers enjoy a 100% private jet flying experience. Services and flight conditions are discussed individually. We should note that our company cooperates with the world's largest home bases, so we can offer our clients a wide choice of return flights. Just send a request to our manager who will help you find the best flight options. Please note that Empty Leg flights are sold out very quickly. To avoid such a problem, you can leave us a deposit, and we will contact you as soon as the flight of your choice becomes available. For additional information, check with the operators.

What an empty leg on the Italian routes typically looks like, shown at about two fifths of the fresh one-way price. Real legs vary with the day, the operator and how late the flight is released, so read the figures as a level and not as an offer:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Italy (Milan Linate) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Cessna Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £3,300
UK (London Stansted) - Italy (Genoa) Embraer Phenom 300E 8 seats £3,600
UK (London Luton) - Italy (Florence) Cessna Citation XLS+ 9 seats £5,150
UK (Birmingham) - Italy (Rome Ciampino) Bombardier Challenger 350 9 seats £7,900
Italy (Bari) - UK (Manchester) Bombardier Challenger 605 12 seats £10,250

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Challenger 605 from Manchester to Bari at £10,250 carrying eight works out at about £1,300 a head, against £24,400 for a fresh charter;

– Italian traffic loads one way at the weekend. Island and ski weekends send aircraft out on Friday and Saturday and bring them back empty on Sunday and Monday, so a client who can leave on a Monday or fly out midweek sees far more empty legs than one tied to a Saturday.

Helicopter charter

In Italy the helicopter is a resort tool before it is anything else. A jet brings you to Naples, Olbia or Venice, and the last stretch to Capri, a Costa Smeralda villa or a Cortina hotel is where a rotary aircraft changes the day:

Naples to Capri
landing at the Damecuta heliport in Anacapri, against a hydrofoil of 45 to 50 minutes plus the transfers
under 30 minutes
Olbia to Porto Cervo
32 km by road, 35 to 40 minutes on the coast road
up to 10 minutes
Malpensa to Lake Como
the Como heliport takes up to five passengers between 07:00 and 23:00 local time
about 15 minutes
Venice to Cortina
about 60 nautical miles to the heliport at Fiames, against a road of over two hours
about 30 to 35 minutes

The machines, and two rules

– Airbus H125 and Bell 407 for resort transfers, H130 and H135 for five or six passengers, Leonardo AW109 and AW139 for a corporate group or a sea leg to a yacht;

– Landing outside an aerodrome is decided case by case, with prior authorisation from ENAC for a private site. A hotel lawn is not a heliport, so a transfer is planned between established sites;

– In peak weeks helicopter seats run short before jets do, so the rotary leg is booked together with the jet.

Italian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the Italian routes look like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs described without names, and with a few particulars altered.

ROME DAY RETURN · THE WINDOW CLOSED AT ELEVEN

Two executives, a long lunch and a general aviation window

Biggin Hill - Rome Ciampino and return, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 20 min each way · 2 pax

The meeting ran late and the dinner later still. General aviation is listed at Ciampino until 23:00 local time, and the flight plan needed that margin, so the return moved to the early evening and the dinner moved with it.

SARDINIA · THE AIRCRAFT COULD NOT STAY

A family of six, a week in August and a full apron

Farnborough - Olbia, Praetor 600, about 2 h 15 min · 6 pax

They asked for the jet to wait at Olbia for the week. In July and August parking there is limited, so the aircraft dropped them, repositioned to the mainland and returned a week later, and the quote showed two one-way sectors from the start.

CORTINA · THE LAST 140 KM

A group of five, ski bags and a valley road

London Stansted - Venice, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 55 min · 5 pax

The jet leg was the easy part. They had assumed a runway at Cortina. We landed at Venice, sent the ski luggage by minibus and the party by helicopter to Fiames, and booked both legs on one schedule.

SICILY · ETNA CLOSED THE FIELD

Three travellers and a plume of ash over Catania

Southampton - Catania, Challenger 605, about 3 h · 3 pax

Ash shut Catania on the morning of departure. Palermo had been agreed as the fallback when we quoted, so the flight was re-filed and a car was waiting at the other airport. The answer came from the plan made earlier.

EMPTY LEG · A MONDAY FROM MILAN

A client who gave us a window instead of a date

Milan Linate - Biggin Hill, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 1 h 50 min · 3 pax

Italian weekends load the traffic out on Friday and back on Sunday, which leaves aircraft flying home empty on a Monday. A three-day window brought up a Monday leg at a little over two fifths of a fresh one-way price.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Italy

1How long does it take to fly to Italy by private jet?

About an hour and three quarters from London to Turin, just under two hours to Milan, two hours to Venice, around two and a half hours to Rome or Olbia, and close to three hours to Palermo, gate to gate in a light jet. From Manchester add roughly twenty minutes and from Edinburgh about forty-five.

2How much does a private jet to Italy cost?

From about £7,900 one way from Biggin Hill to Milan Linate on a light jet. Genoa from Stansted starts around £8,600, Rome from Birmingham around £18,800, and Palermo from Leeds Bradford around £25,550. A weekend on an island is usually quoted as two one-way sectors.

3Which airports do private jets use in Italy?

Milan Linate for the north, Ciampino for Rome, Marco Polo or Treviso for Venice, Florence or Pisa for Tuscany, Naples for the Amalfi coast, Olbia for Sardinia and Palermo or Catania for Sicily.

4Do I need a permit or a slot to fly a private jet into Italy?

A commercial flight by a non-EU aircraft needs authorisation from ENAC, which the operator and we arrange. Most large airports are coordinated, so the handler requests a slot or prior permission, and handling is compulsory almost everywhere. Rome Ciampino typically works on a permission number rather than a slot.

5Is there an airport for Lake Como, Capri or Cortina?

No jet airport serves any of them. Lake Como is reached through Malpensa or Linate, Capri by helicopter from Naples in under 30 minutes, and Cortina through Treviso or Venice, about 140 km away by road, with a helicopter for the last stretch.

6Can I take my dog on a private jet to Italy?

Yes, with no weight limit and no hold. Italy asks for a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate dated within ten days of entry, and the animal enters through a designated point of entry. Dogs need a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 hours and five days before coming home.
