Private jet charter in Kenya
Nine hours in the air is what Kenya costs from the south-east of England, and about the same coming home, so the first decision is the aircraft and the second is the airport. Nairobi has two of them within a few miles of each other, and they suit different jets. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Kenya that means a landing permit requested from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, a slot and a handler arranged for Jomo Kenyatta before the aircraft leaves Britain, an electronic travel authorisation for every passenger, and a turboprop waiting at Wilson Airport when the plan is a safari.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Kenya depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 flying nonstop to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Kenya?
Kenya keeps East Africa Time, three hours ahead of Greenwich all year, with no daylight saving. The gap with Britain is three hours in winter and two in summer. A Praetor 600 leaving Biggin Hill at nine in the evening, London time, lands after about nine hours at Jomo Kenyatta at about nine in the morning, local time in winter, in time for a meeting. These are the sectors to Nairobi, gate to gate, from the airfields our clients use most:
3,822 nautical miles, the closest of the London fields to Kenya, and the base for the price quoted at the top of the pageabout 9 h
3,841 nautical miles, the usual field for Surrey, Hampshire and the Thames Valleyabout 9 h
3,858 nautical miles, the choice for north London, Hertfordshire and the Midlandsabout 9 h 05 min
3,920 nautical miles, the main airport of the Midlandsabout 9 h 15 min
3,974 nautical miles, the departure for the north-west of Englandabout 9 h 20 min
4,117 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, about 300 nautical miles further than Biggin Hillabout 9 h 40 min
Not every trip ends in the capital, and the Kenyan coast lies further away than Nairobi does. Sectors from Biggin Hill to the coastal airports, on a Global 6000, which is the aircraft that reaches them without a stop:
3,984 nautical miles, the island archipelago in the far north of the coast, with the airport on Manda Islandabout 8 h 40 min
4,016 nautical miles, the resort town north of Mombasaabout 8 h 40 min
4,047 nautical miles, the second city and port, and the gateway to the beaches south of itabout 8 h 45 min
The distance settles the aircraft before the budget does
Nairobi lies 3,822 nautical miles from Biggin Hill. A Praetor 600 is published at about 4,000 nautical miles of range with four passengers and reserves, so the run is inside its range with two aboard, and it is the aircraft behind the title price of this page. The margin is slim, about 200 nautical miles, and Jomo Kenyatta stands at 1,624 metres, where a full cabin and a warm afternoon cost take-off performance. The return leg is the one that meets the headwind, and a planner may ask for a fuel stop on the way home. A Challenger 350, quoted at about 3,200 nautical miles, needs one stop on the way out, and a midsize jet such as a Citation XLS+, at about 2,100, needs two.
A stop adds about an hour and a half of ground time and a second set of landing and handling charges, shown as a line of its own in the quote. The coast is further still, about 4,000 nautical miles to Malindi and Mombasa, which is why the Global 6000 flies those sectors. The operator files the route and the overflight permissions for every state along it.
The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Prices for the private jet flights to Kenya
Typical private jet charter prices from Britain to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, listed cheapest first. Every row is a nonstop Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for this run without a fuel stop. London City is left out on purpose, because its short runway is a poor start for a sector of this length:
| Route | Aircraft | Price, one way |
|---|---|---|
| London Biggin Hill - Nairobi 3,822 nm / 7,078 km |
Praetor 600 up to 9 |
from £60,150 |

| Glasgow - Nairobi 4,140 nm / 7,667 km |
Praetor 600 up to 9 |

Two things worth knowing about these figures
– The departure airfield moves the price by a few thousand pounds and not by tens of thousands. Edinburgh costs about £4,450 more than Biggin Hill on the same aircraft and Glasgow about £4,800 more, and each hundred nautical miles adds roughly £1,500 on a Praetor 600;
– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies back empty. For a return trip with a stay of several days the aircraft either waits in Kenya, with parking and crew accommodation as lines of their own, or flies home and returns for you.
Jomo Kenyatta is the anchor because it is the airport where a jet from Europe lands. The same departure to the coastal airports costs more, because the distance is longer and the Praetor cannot fly it nonstop; these sectors are priced on a Global 6000:
| Route from Biggin Hill | Aircraft | Flight time | Price, one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biggin Hill - Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta 3,822 nm / 7,078 km |
Praetor 600 up to 9 |
about 9 h | from £60,150 |
| Biggin Hill - Lamu (Manda Island) 3,984 nm / 7,378 km |
Global 6000 up to 13 |
about 8 h 40 min | from £108,550 |
| Biggin Hill - Malindi 4,016 nm / 7,438 km |
Global 6000 up to 13 |
about 8 h 40 min | from £109,400 |
| Biggin Hill - Mombasa Moi 4,047 nm / 7,495 km |
Global 6000 up to 13 |
about 8 h 45 min | from £110,200 |
| Biggin Hill - Diani (Ukunda) 4,063 nm / 7,525 km |
Global 6000 up to 13 |
about 8 h 50 min | from £110,600 |
Why the title says Nairobi
Nairobi is the closest large Kenyan airport to London and the one with round-the-clock customs and a full set of services. A Global 6000 to Mombasa costs £5,900 more than the same aircraft to Nairobi from the same airfield, and Lamu £4,250 more than Nairobi on that aircraft, so the choice of coast against capital is usually made by the itinerary. Many parties continue from Nairobi to the coast on a light jet.
Private jet flights within Kenya and to its neighbours
A typical Kenyan trip is a hub and spoke: the jet from Britain lands at Jomo Kenyatta, and the party fans out by turboprop to a reserve, a conservancy or the coast and comes back. The sectors below start at Nairobi and include the neighbouring capitals:

Two things worth knowing about the sectors inside Kenya
– Handler guidance says Kenya has no cabotage restriction, so a chartered aircraft may be used for several domestic sectors, although the operator must give the authority its full schedule and passenger list for every stop. We confirm the position for your aircraft before you commit;
– The Masai Mara and the other bush airstrips are gravel, and as we understand it they are used by turboprops and not by jets. A Pilatus PC-12 flies to the Mara in about 55 minutes, which is why a turboprop is the ordinary tool for Kenya's reserves, taking off from Wilson Airport and not from Jomo Kenyatta.
We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Just fill in all the fields of the form with a note that you are interested in a specific model of the aircraft and get the final price. NB! - the figures are sent to you by email or messenger, please carefully fill in the contact details to get the calculation.
All our calculations are as transparent as possible for you. After receiving the request, we will prepare a beautiful offer - where the costs and the final price will be clearly described. The exact price is agreed in advance and is written in the contract, so you can be sure of the final cost.
Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Kenya:
Turboprops and light jets
The class for the hops inside Kenya once you are there. The Pilatus PC-12 NGX takes up to nine on the sectors to the Mara, Laikipia and the coast. From London these jets reach Nairobi only with two stops, which few clients accept.
Super-midsize
The smallest class that flies London to Nairobi in one go, and the one our title price is built on. A Challenger 350 needs a technical stop on the way out.
Large cabin
For a family with a long stay ahead, or a delegation with staff, and room to rest on a sector of nine hours. Range is tighter on the way home, because the airfield stands at 1,624 metres and the aircraft leaves heavy.
Ultra-long range
The class that makes the run comfortable, with the margin to fly Nairobi to London nonstop with a full cabin and to reach Mombasa, Malindi or Lamu from Britain without a stop.

Business aviation airports in Kenya
Two Nairobi airports share the private traffic, and the useful question is which of them fits the aircraft and the plan:
| Airport | Ground | How it operates |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International NBO / HKJK |
About 18 km south-east of the city centre, at 1,624 metres above sea level | The answer for a jet arriving from Europe. One runway of 4,117 metres, open round the clock with a 24-hour tower, customs on site, an ILS approach. The airport is slot coordinated and handling is compulsory, so both are arranged before the flight plan is filed |
| Nairobi Wilson WIL / HKNW |
About 4 to 5 km south of the city centre, at 1,690 metres | The base for turboprops, light jets and safari flights. Two asphalt runways, the longer of about 1,550 metres, visual approaches only on its record, customs listed and no slots. Listed hours are 08:00 to 17:00 local, so a late arrival is agreed in advance |
| Mombasa Moi International MBA / HKMO |
About 13 km north-west of the town, close to sea level | The coastal gateway. A runway of 3,350 metres, open round the clock with customs, slots required and handling compulsory on its record, and a separate general aviation terminal for private and charter flights |
| Malindi MYD / HKML |
Coast north of Mombasa, about 105 km by air from Moi | Two runways, the longer of about 1,400 metres, with immigration and customs and international operations listed for daily daytime hours, 06:00 to 18:30 local. A field for light jets and turboprops, not for a large jet from London |
| Lamu (Manda Island) LAU / HKLU |
Manda Island, a short boat ride from Lamu town | A paved runway of about 1,900 metres, sources differ slightly. Customs and handling for a private aircraft are confirmed with the handler before we quote. The British government advises against all travel to most of Lamu County, with Lamu Island and Manda Island excepted |
| Diani (Ukunda) UKA / HKUK |
South coast, beside Diani Beach | A runway of 1,174 metres and scheduled turboprop flights from Nairobi, so a domestic field for a turboprop or a small jet, and not an airport of entry for a trip from Britain |
Jomo Kenyatta is an airline hub, and a private aircraft shares it with the long-haul fleets of the scheduled carriers. The airport is listed as slot coordinated, and handler guidance says the slots matter mainly for large aircraft and for stays of several days, with scheduled traffic given priority. Requests go through the handler, with a notice of at least 48 hours quoted, and the flight plan of a large aircraft can be refused without a slot number in the remarks. Handling is compulsory. Records list many flight support companies for the field, among them General Aviation Services Ltd, Africa Aviation Executive Services, Jetmate Aviation and FCG Ops Africa, and several are supervising agents who book the services and not ramp handlers. We name the one we use in the quote.
Customs and immigration are on site. Jet fuel is listed, and catering can be arranged at any hour, with 48 to 72 hours of notice advised for unusual items. Some stands need a tow-in, so a tow bar is worth carrying. The original civil terminal on the north side of the runway is now used by the Kenya Air Force, so there is no separate private terminal to point to on this page, and we ask the handler for the stand, the terminal route and the car access in writing.
Wilson is the city airport, about 18 km by road from Jomo Kenyatta. The scheduled domestic airlines and the medical and missionary aviation operators work from it, and executive aircraft favour it for the faster check-in. Its two asphalt runways are short for a jet of the Praetor class at that altitude, so we plan it for turboprops, the Pilatus PC-12, the King Air and the lighter jets, and not for the aircraft that flies in from London.
Mombasa takes a large jet and works round the clock. The smaller coastal fields, Malindi, Lamu and Diani, are for turboprops and light jets.
Four points settle most Kenyan arrivals before a quote goes out:
Landing permit: 72 working hours
A foreign operator needs a landing permit and, where land is crossed, an overflight permit from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Handler guidance quotes 72 working hours of lead time, with shorter notice possible at the authority's discretion when the papers are complete. Another permit specialist quotes 24 to 48 working hours for a complete file. A permit covers a window of about 72 hours.
Office hours matter
The authority works on weekdays, roughly 08:00 to 15:00 local, and is closed at weekends and on public holidays. A weekend flight needs the request in by Thursday.
A local contact and the purpose
Each general aviation request states the purpose of travel, a business contact in Kenya, and the details of everyone aboard, with the aircraft papers and worldwide insurance. For a safari the contact is the lodge or the tour company, and for a business trip the host company.
Changes need a revised permit
A change of airport, or a schedule outside the permit window, needs a new or revised permit. Flights to or from Somalia need separate written permission, and government or diplomatic flights have their own procedure through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Arriving from Britain: passports, travel authorisation and customs
Kenya is far outside the Schengen area. It asks British visitors for an online electronic travel authorisation, and every passenger needs one before the flight. These are the points that decide whether the party passes through in minutes or is held at the desk:
the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day of arrival and have at least two blank pages; a dual national returning to Britain must carry a British passport or a certificate of entitlementevery passenger, children included
the British government points travellers to the official Kenyan eTA site and recommends applying at least two weeks before departure; the official fee starts at 30 US dollars, most applications are handled in about three business days, and each member of a group needs a separate approval before travelapply online before the flight
most visitors who stay under 12 months must buy the Kenyan government travel health insurance, which is added when the eTA is bought and is valid for 90 days; the British government says foreign travel insurance is not accepted in its placepart of the eTA application
a yellow fever certificate is needed when the traveller arrives from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk, and travellers arriving from some neighbouring countries may face enhanced health screeningdirect from Britain, usually none
importing or exporting a drone needs prior approval from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority; anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty must be declared at customscheck before you pack
Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Most other nationalities do.
Read the travel advice before you book
The British government publishes advice for Kenya county by county. Because of the threat of terrorism from groups based in Somalia, it advises against all travel to Mandera County, to Lamu County except Lamu Island and Manda Island, to Garissa County except Garissa town and the Lagdera constituency, to the Tarbaj and Wajir East constituencies of Wajir County except Wajir town, and to the parts of Wajir County within 60 km of the Somali border. It advises against all but essential travel to Garissa town, to the part of Tana River County north of the river as far as Saka, and to the strip within 15 km of the coast between the Tana River and the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki) River.
For a private traveller the practical meaning is plain. Nairobi, the Masai Mara, the Laikipia conservancies, Amboseli, Mombasa, the south coast and the islands of Lamu and Manda lie outside the areas named, and those are the places this page is about. We read the advice against your itinerary before we quote and again close to departure. Travelling against it can invalidate travel insurance, and a flight is confirmed only when the operator holds the route, the permissions and the insurance cover in writing. If airspace is closed, the flight does not operate, and the practical alternative is the nearest open airport and a ground transfer, which we price on request.

Which airport for which part of Kenya
Kenya is large, and what matters is where the party sleeps:
the capital stands at 1,795 metres, the United Nations offices at Gigiri host UN Environment and UN-Habitat, and Jomo Kenyatta is about 18 km from the centre, so most meetings are a short drive from the aircraftNairobi Jomo Kenyatta
the reserve adjoins the Serengeti, its eastern edge is about 224 km from Nairobi, and a string of gravel airstrips serves the camps, among them Keekorok, Serena, Musiara, Ol Kiombo and Olare Orok; scheduled flights from Wilson take about an hourWilson, then a turboprop to the strip
the private ranches and conservancies on the plateau north of Mount Kenya, and the park below Kilimanjaro, are each about 50 minutes by turboprop from WilsonWilson, then a turboprop
the coastal gateway has a runway of 3,350 metres and a general aviation terminal, and the beach resorts of Diani lie to the south, with a short airstrip of their own for turbopropsMombasa Moi, or a turboprop to Diani
Malindi, north of Mombasa, has a customs-listed airstrip, and Lamu, with its old town on the island, is reached from the airport on Manda Island by a short boat ride; the advice for the county excepts both islandsMalindi or Lamu, by turboprop or light jet
Nairobi, the Mara and the coast: what our clients go for
Safari comes first. The Masai Mara, the conservancies of Laikipia and the park at Amboseli are all within an hour of Nairobi by turboprop, in place of most of a day on the road. A jet to Jomo Kenyatta, a car to Wilson and a turboprop to a camp is the standard pattern, and we quote it as one itinerary.
Diplomacy and business come second. Nairobi is the headquarters of UN Environment and UN-Habitat, and many agencies and embassies keep regional offices in the city, so delegations arrive for conferences and negotiations with a protocol officer and a tight programme, and a private aircraft keeps to a timetable that scheduled flights cannot guarantee.
The coast is the third reason: Mombasa, the second city and the port, Diani Beach to the south of it, and Malindi and the old town of Lamu to the north. A party that has finished a safari often ends on the coast, and the jet flies it from the bush to the sea without a connection. At Lamu the last stretch is a short boat ride from the airport on Manda Island.
The Kenyan year: two rainy seasons on the equator
Nairobi sits almost on the equator, so rain, not temperature, defines the seasons. Daytime highs at the airport run from about 24 degrees in July to about 28 in March, and the evenings are cool, dropping to about 9 degrees in June and July. The rain is what changes from month to month:
the sunniest and warmest part of the year, with the highest daytime temperatures in March; the Serengeti calving, in neighbouring Tanzania, is at its peak in Februarywarm, mostly dry
the long rains, which fall over about six to eight weeks in the Mara; April and May are the heaviest months of the year at Nairobi airport, and the roads to the camps are slowlong rains
the driest months, with July, August and September the driest of all at Nairobi, cool nights and clear days; the wildebeest herds reach the Mara between July and August and the river crossings peak in August and September, which makes it the busiest part of the safari seasondry season, peak safari
the herds head south in October and the short rains arrive in November and December, a period of about four weeks of rain in the Mara; November is among the wettest months at Nairobi airport, and December brings the holidaysshort rains and the holidays
The airfield is high, and the aircraft feels it
Jomo Kenyatta stands at 1,624 metres and Wilson at 1,690. At that height the air is thin, and an aircraft needs a longer run to take off and carries less for a given weight, especially on a warm afternoon. The runway at the international airport is 4,117 metres, so length is no problem, but a long sector home with full tanks and a full cabin can limit the payload. Nairobi is also where passengers from sea level may feel breathless on the first day. We ask for the payload to be confirmed in the quote.
The Kenyan calendar: the rally, the migration and the Lamu festival
A handful of dates fill the camps and the apron in Nairobi:
What a season does to a flight plan
The peak weeks of the Mara season, the week of the rally and the holidays tighten the supply of aircraft at Wilson and of beds in the camps. A booking made six to eight weeks before the migration season or the Christmas weeks is simpler than one made in the last week.

Flying to Kenya with a dog or a cat
The cabin is not the problem: the animal sits beside you for the nine hours. The paperwork is the problem. Kenya asks for an import permit before the animal travels, its published rules are written for animals shipped as air cargo, and Britain does not treat Kenya as a listed country, so an animal coming home needs a rabies blood test planned months before the flight.
The one fact to read before you book
Published guidance for owners says that a dog or a cat entering Kenya needs an import permit obtained in advance from the Kenyan veterinary authority, a microchip of the 15-digit type, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days and not more than 12 months before entry, and a health certificate from a licensed vet in the country of origin, endorsed by the government service, after an inspection within 48 hours of departure. Parasite treatment is asked for within 48 hours of arrival. The point of entry is Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta.
That guidance describes animals arriving as air cargo, and it says nothing about a private aircraft. Whether the animal may travel in the cabin of your jet is something we confirm with the Kenyan authority in writing before we quote. GOV.UK carries a Great Britain export health certificate for dogs and cats going to Kenya, which an Official Veterinarian completes shortly before departure.
- A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination, as the return to Britain requires;
- A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days, and not more than 12 months, before entry to Kenya, and at least 21 days before the return to Britain;
- The Kenyan import permit and the export health certificate, completed by an Official Veterinarian, with the vaccination record attached;
- For the return, a rabies blood test, because Kenya is not listed, and a Great Britain pet health certificate; GOV.UK counts three months from the date of the blood sample before an animal from a non-listed country may travel to Britain;
- For dogs only, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. A cat needs no treatment.
An approved travel route for the return is the last item. GOV.UK tells owners to check it, and its guidance does not say how the rule applies to a private aircraft, so we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight. An animal that does not meet the rules can be placed in quarantine for up to four months at the owner's expense, and one that does not meet the Kenyan conditions can be quarantined or sent back at the importer's cost.
The tapeworm window for the flight home is 24 to 120 hours, so a dog's vet visit falls in Kenya, near the end of the stay. Requirements for ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. The sector is so long that many trips are one-way by nature: a family flies out for a safari fortnight, and the aircraft comes home or moves on.
Where Kenyan empty legs come from
– Aircraft that take a family or a company party to Nairobi and fly back to Britain without passengers, which is the leg most often offered;
– Aircraft repositioning to Nairobi before the peak weeks of the Mara season;
– Regional legs between Nairobi, Zanzibar, Entebbe and the Gulf.
A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. Typical Kenyan empty legs:

| Zanzibar - Nairobi | Phenom 300E | 8 seats | £2,400 |
| Nairobi - Dubai | Challenger 350 | 9 seats | £16,100 |
| Nairobi - UK (London Biggin Hill) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £25,250 |
| Nairobi - UK (Farnborough) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £25,350 |
| UK (London Luton) - Nairobi | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £25,500 |
| UK (Birmingham) - Nairobi | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £25,850 |
| UK (Manchester) - Nairobi | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £26,250 |
| UK (Edinburgh) - Nairobi | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £27,150 |
How to read those figures
– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from London Luton to Nairobi at £25,500 with eight aboard comes to about £3,200 a head;
– A leg that points towards Britain is easier to find at the end of the school holidays and after the migration season, and an open return date helps.

Helicopter charter
A helicopter in Kenya is a tool for the edges of a trip, arranged case by case. We do not publish a standing helicopter service for the country, because the machine, the crew and the permission for each landing site come from local operators and are confirmed for the date. The times below are straight-line planning estimates from Nairobi:
to the Rift Valley lake town and the rally base, in place of the roadabout 35 min
to the plateau north of Mount Kenya, a morning flight in place of a long driveabout 50 min
to the park below Kilimanjaro, a day trip from Nairobiabout 50 min
a long sector for a helicopter, usually flown as a transfer between campsabout 1 h 10 min
Typical machines are the Airbus H125 and H130 for short transfers, and the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin-engine helicopter is wanted. At Nairobi's altitude of 1,795 metres a helicopter carries less than at sea level, which is why the load is stated in the quote. We book it alongside the jet, so the whole itinerary is quoted as one.
Before you plan around a helicopter
The Kenyan authorities control where a helicopter may land, and the reserves and conservancies have their own rules on landing sites, so we confirm the permission for every landing site and every overflown area before we quote. A camp lawn or a lake shore is not a site until it has been approved.

Kenyan charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.
MASAI MARA · A FAMILY SAFARI
Three generations and a turboprop
Farnborough - Nairobi, Praetor 600, about 9 h · 6 pax
The jet landed at Jomo Kenyatta in the morning, cars took the party to Wilson, and a Pilatus PC-12 flew it to a gravel strip in the Mara in under an hour. The jet waited for the return.
NAIROBI · A SHORT STAY
Two executives and a one-night visit
London Luton - Nairobi, Praetor 600, about 9 h 05 min · 2 pax
They left London in the evening, arrived in the morning and flew home after a day of meetings and a night in the city. The luggage stayed light, because a full cabin and the fuel for the long sector home would have cost payload at that altitude.
NAIROBI · THE UNITED NATIONS
A delegation with a protocol officer
Birmingham - Nairobi, Praetor 600, about 9 h 15 min · 8 pax
The dates came from the conference programme. The permit request went in well over 72 working hours ahead, and the slot and the handler were fixed before the flight plan.
THE COAST · A HOLIDAY ON THE SOUTH SHORE
A family of seven and a long sector
Biggin Hill - Mombasa, Global 6000, about 8 h 45 min · 7 pax
The distance was beyond a Praetor on a nonstop sector, so the family took a Global 6000 straight to Mombasa and a car to the beach resorts. The jet flew back empty and returned for them at the end of the stay.
WITH THE DOG · THE LONG LEAD TIME
Two adults and a spaniel on a posting
Biggin Hill - Nairobi, Praetor 600, about 9 h · 2 pax + dog
The import permit came first, then the export certificate, and the rabies blood test for the way home was taken early because Kenya is not a listed country.
EMPTY LEG · A FLEXIBLE RETURN
A Nairobi departure with a window of three days
Nairobi - London Luton, Praetor 600 empty leg, about 9 h 05 min · 4 pax
The client gave us a window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £25,500, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a departure on the second day of the window.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Kenya
1How long does it take to fly to Kenya by private jet?
About 9 hours nonstop from London Biggin Hill to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta on a Praetor 600, and 9 hours 40 minutes from Edinburgh. A smaller aircraft needs a technical stop that adds about an hour and a half. Kenya is three hours ahead of Britain in winter and two hours ahead in summer.
2How much does a private jet to Kenya cost?
From about £60,150 one way from Biggin Hill to Nairobi on a Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for the nonstop run. Edinburgh costs about £4,450 more on the same aircraft. Mombasa is £110,200 on a Global 6000 and short domestic hops from Nairobi start from £3,100 on a turboprop.
3Which airport should a private jet use in Kenya?
Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO / HKJK) for a jet arriving from Europe: open round the clock, customs on site, slot coordinated and handling compulsory. Wilson (WIL / HKNW) is the city field for turboprops and light jets, the usual start for a safari flight. Mombasa Moi (MBA / HKMO) is the coastal gateway, with a general aviation terminal.
4Do British passengers need a visa or a permit for a private flight to Kenya?
Every passenger needs an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before the flight, and the British government recommends applying at least two weeks ahead. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival with two blank pages, and most visitors must also buy the Kenyan government travel health insurance. The aircraft needs a landing permit from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, and handler guidance quotes 72 working hours of lead time.
5Can a private jet land in the Masai Mara?
As we understand it, the airstrips of the Masai Mara are gravel and are used by turboprops, not by jets. The usual plan is a jet to Jomo Kenyatta, a short transfer to Wilson and a Pilatus PC-12 or a similar turboprop to the strip, about an hour in the air. We book the whole chain as one itinerary.
6Can I take my dog or cat to Kenya on a private jet?
It can be done, but start early. The animal needs a Kenyan import permit in advance and a UK export health certificate completed by an Official Veterinarian, and published rules are written for animals shipped as cargo, so we confirm in writing that the animal may travel in the cabin. For the return Kenya is not a listed country, so it needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a rabies blood test, a Great Britain pet health certificate and, for dogs, a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before arrival.
