Private jet charter in Venice

Venice is about two hours from London by private jet, and almost everything that makes the trip unusual happens after you land, because the last stretch into the city is water and not road. Private Jets UK books the aircraft, the airport permission and the boat at the dock as one job. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We work with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Venice is a small stage with a very full diary: one main airport, a handful of apron stands for private aircraft and a calendar that fills the lagoon several times a year. For that reason a Venice enquiry starts with your dates and your hotel, and only then with the aircraft.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Venice depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Venice?

Roughly two hours from the London airfields and a little under three from Glasgow. At 626 nautical miles from Biggin Hill, Venice is long enough for cabin size to start mattering, which it does not on the hop to Milan, and short enough that no one needs a large jet to make the distance. The aircraft question here is mostly about luggage, seats and what you want to pay per hour, and the times below are planning figures for a light or midsize jet in normal conditions.

Door to door, which here means door to dock

Marco Polo sits on the mainland shore of the lagoon, about eight kilometres in a straight line from the old city, and the general aviation terminal has its own boat dock beside it. That changes the arithmetic. Walk from the aircraft to the customs desk, then to the boat, and you are on the water within a short time of landing; the crossing to the San Marco basin takes about half an hour. From a private terminal in the London area to a hotel landing stage in Venice the whole journey tends to come to four to five hours, most of it spent sitting down. What clients are buying on this route is not the speed of the aeroplane but the absence of the airport hall, and the fact that the boat can pull up at the hotel's own steps.

Light jet or midsize: how we decide

– A Citation CJ3+ or a Phenom 300E is an honest two-hour cabin. Biggin Hill to Venice comes to £9,000 one way in a CJ3+, against £11,200 in a Citation XLS+ and £13,950 in a Challenger 350. The step up is real money, so it needs a reason;

– The reason is almost always luggage and not legroom. Film Festival delegations with garment bags, Biennale parties carrying pieces for a stand and anyone arriving with several weeks of clothes will fill the hold of a light jet before they fill its seats, and that is the argument that moves us up a class;

– For a party of six or more, or anyone who wants a stand-up cabin and a proper lavatory on a two-hour leg, the midsize class is the sensible floor. We say so at the quote stage rather than after the aircraft is chosen.

Private jet flights from Venice

Venice is a good place to start from. The Alps are an hour away, the Croatian coast closer than that, and most of the cities on the Italian and Austrian side of the continent sit within a light jet's lunch break. On sectors this short the figure is set by a minimum charge rather than by distance, which is why several rows below carry the same price:

Why the Croatian legs look cheap, and when they are not

Split is 214 nautical miles from Marco Polo, which is under an hour in the air, and Dubrovnik is not much further. A leg that short is billed at the minimum a charter operator will accept for an aircraft leaving its base, so a weekend on the Dalmatian coast costs little more in a light jet than a trip to Milan. The sum changes when the aircraft has to wait. If you want the same jet back on the Sunday, the crew and the aeroplane stay on the ground for two nights and the quote reflects it. We price the out-and-back as one booking and, where the dates allow, as two one-way legs flown by whichever operators are nearest, then show you both.

Three questions that move a Venice quote

– Where is the aircraft now? A jet already sitting in northern Italy carries no positioning cost, and on a short sector positioning is a large share of the bill. One arriving from Britain to take you onward is a different quote;

– Is the whole itinerary one booking? Venice, then Split, then back to Venice over a long weekend is cheaper arranged together than as three separate charters, because the aircraft stays on your job instead of flying home between legs;

– Do the stand and the date agree? Marco Polo has only a few private stands and approves parking for a limited stay, so a three-night wait on the apron may be quoted as a drop-off and a return from another airport. That is a good outcome, not a bad one, and we would rather price it at the start.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3500 in Europe and 3000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. On charters into Marco Polo the three types that turn up most often are the Phenom 300, the Citation XLS and the Citation Latitude, and the cards below are grouped the way we sort a Venice request:

Light jets, the default for a short stay

On a two-hour sector and a party of four or fewer this is where we start. The cabin is enough, the hold is small, and the saving over a midsize aircraft pays for the boat at the other end.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, the most common Venice booking

A stand-up cabin, a real lavatory and a hold that takes festival luggage. The Citation XLS and Latitude are the two names you will hear most often for this airport.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h

Super-midsize and large

For a full party travelling as one, for a Scottish departure where the extra speed saves a little time, and for itineraries that carry on from Venice to the Gulf or the islands without turning round.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h

Turboprops

Worth a question for a small party on a quiet week out of southern England. They fly lower and slower, so the sector runs longer, and the saving shrinks once the extra time is billed.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for what follows it: the quick hop from the airport into the city, and the Dolomites, where a helicopter beats a winding mountain road by a wide margin.

Airbus H130 · 6 seatson request
Agusta AW109 Grand New · 5 seatson request

This is a small part of what is available. For Venice the aircraft is often already somewhere in Italy, Switzerland or Austria rather than in Britain, and that is usually where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in Venice

Venice has one airport that matters for a private jet and a short list of others that matter for a particular reason. Marco Polo is the answer unless the dates, the destination or the size of the aircraft say otherwise.

Airport What it gives you
Venice Marco Polo
VCE / LIPZ
The default for private traffic, on the mainland shore about 8 km in a straight line from the old city. Two asphalt runways, the longer of 3,300 metres, so nothing a client is likely to charter is too big for it. A general aviation terminal on the western side of the field with crew and passenger lounges, meeting rooms and its own boat dock next door. A 24-hour airport of entry with no curfew, no slot requirement, but prior permission is needed for every movement
Treviso Sant'Angelo
TSF / LIPH
About 31 km from Venice and half an hour to forty minutes by road. A single asphalt runway of 2,420 metres, full handling by Sky Services and Treviso Corporate Aviation, and a dedicated general aviation entrance to the terminal. The overflow field when Marco Polo is full, and the better starting point for Cortina and the Veneto hinterland. It is more prone to fog than its neighbour
Verona Villafranca
VRN / LIPX
A runway of 3,068 metres about 10 km south-west of Verona and roughly an hour and a half by road from Venice. A good fit for a short stay in Verona itself or for Lake Garda, and a sensible fallback for the Venice area only when everything closer is booked
Trieste Ronchi dei Legionari
TRS / LIPQ
About an hour from Venice by car, with full handling, ground equipment and reasonable parking. We use it as a parking alternative on the busiest weeks, with the aircraft dropping you at Marco Polo and returning for the departure
Venice Lido Nicelli
LIPV
A grass strip of about 1,000 metres on the Lido, some 3.5 km east of the city. It is a light-aircraft field and not a place we would send a jet, a charter party or an international arrival
Padua Allegri
LIPU
A single asphalt runway of about 1,100 metres. Too short for most business jets, and for that reason it does not feature in our Venice plans

Four practical matters shape a private arrival at Marco Polo: the choice of airport, the hours, the paperwork and the catering.

Why Marco Polo

Nothing else in the area puts a private jet this close to the water. The general aviation terminal is a few minutes' walk from the boat dock, and the airport accepts arrivals round the clock. Customs and immigration are normally cleared inside the terminal in minutes for a small party. Treviso adds half an hour or more of road at each end.

Hours and parking

Published hours for the general aviation terminal disagree. The operator's listing gives 0600 to 2200 local, with later service on request, so we confirm your day in writing. The airport itself stays open all night, and out of hours customs is done in the main terminal. Private stands are few, and a stay of up to about 72 hours is typical.

Permission and passports

Prior permission, not a slot, is the paperwork. Request it once the schedule is fixed, with registration, operator, crew and passenger details and the length of stay, and allow 24 to 48 hours. Britain is outside Schengen, so the border is crossed inside the terminal: passport issued within ten years, three months valid beyond departure.

Catering and fuel

The Marco Polo caterers are good but want 24 to 48 hours, so order a day or two ahead. At Treviso or Trieste it is simpler to bring catering on board or use a local restaurant. Private non-revenue flights may take fuel only within four hours of departure, and the trucks can be slow around midday.

business aviation

We keep Treviso for three situations: the destination is Cortina or the Veneto interior, Marco Polo has no stand left for your dates, or the aircraft is staying and needs more ramp than the lagoon airport will give it.

In the Film Festival weeks a quick turnaround may be limited to two hours on the ground, and cash or travellers cheques worth roughly £8,500 or more must be declared.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

From the apron to the lagoon

This is the part of a Venice trip that no other city quite has. Cars stop at the edge of the old city, the hotels sit on canals, islands and the Lido, and the sensible way to arrive is a boat that leaves from a dock beside the terminal. Distances here mean less than the route you take.

Marco Polo to the San Marco basin by private water taxi
from the dock next to the general aviation terminal, with a stop at the hotel's own landing stage where there is one
about 30 minutes
Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto by car
the end of the road; from there the last stretch is on foot or by boat
25 to 35 minutes
Marco Polo to the Lido
the Film Festival island, reached by water taxi from the same dock
by boat
Marco Polo to the old city by helicopter
a short hop, subject to a landing site that suits your hotel
8 to 12 minutes
The public Alilaguna water bus
the cheap option, with stops at Venice, Lido and Murano, and no use to a party with luggage in a hurry
60 to 90 minutes
Treviso to the old city
about 31 km, and the road ends at the same Piazzale Roma
30 to 40 minutes
Verona to Venice
only for a Verona stay with a day in Venice added
about 1 h 30 min

Three things to settle with the transfer

– Name the hotel before we name the airport. Some of the best hotels are reachable only by boat, and a landing stage of their own saves the walk across the bridges. Venice has more than four hundred footbridges with steps, and a wheeled suitcase is a poor companion on all of them. We book a porter along with the boat;

– The published retail price of a private boat for the crossing runs from roughly £120 to £175 for up to six people, and it is higher at night. Public water taxis are far cheaper and can take up to an hour. On a trip that already includes a charter aircraft, the private boat is the one we book;

– Plan a margin in winter. Fog over the lagoon brings low-visibility procedures at the airport, and the morning departure that was easy in May may need an hour in hand in January. A same-day visit to the old city also makes you a day visitor under the city's access fee on selected peak days, which overnight guests do not pay. We tell you if your dates fall on one.

Cortina d'Ampezzo: the Dolomites from Venice

Venice and Treviso are the two airports most people use for Cortina, in winter for the skiing and again in summer, when the peak season runs from June to September. Cortina is not a destination for a jet: the old aerodrome at Fiames is now the base of a helicopter operator, so a charter client flies into Venice or Treviso and finishes the journey by road or by air.

Treviso to Cortina
137 km, and the nearer of the two main airports on the map. The lead usually evaporates on the mountain road
10 to 15 minutes quicker on a clear day
Marco Polo to Cortina
148 km, the longer motorway run but a flat and easy one, and the better airport when the dates are tight
a little over two hours in good conditions
Bolzano to Cortina
138 km, a third gateway that we look at only for aircraft that suit its approach
similar to Treviso
Verona to Cortina
265 km, a backup rather than a shortcut
about three hours
Marco Polo to the Cortina heliport at Fiames
roughly 60 nautical miles in a straight line, the clearest argument for a helicopter in this part of Italy
about 30 to 35 minutes

How we plan a Cortina transfer

– Every road vehicle for Cortina uses the same valley road, the SS51 through the Cadore, and it clogs on winter Saturdays with crossings and speed cameras. Where the dates are flexible we move the arrival to a weekday or a Sunday, and that saves more time than any choice of airport;

– Winter tyres or chains are required from November to April, and the high passes such as Falzarego and Valparola can close in heavy snow. A driver who knows the valley is part of the booking. Resorts beyond Cortina, such as Arabba or Corvara, can take well over three hours from the airport;

– A helicopter turns the transfer into a short flight, but the weather decides it, not us, and the Fiames heliport is where we plan to land. We do not assume that a hotel lawn will do without asking first. Ski luggage and a large group are the case for the road, with a minibus waiting at the aircraft.

Flying to Venice with a dog or a cat

Italy is one of the easier countries to take an animal to, and a private flight removes most of the difficulty. The animal sits in the cabin with you, there is no hold and no weight limit, and the general aviation terminal at Marco Polo handles the formalities away from the public concourse. The less obvious part comes after landing: Venice is a city of boats, steps and narrow pavements, and a dog has opinions about all three.

private flight with animals

What Italy asks for:

  • An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days between the injection and the day of entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian, valid for entry for 10 days from the date of issue and for six months afterwards for travel inside the EU and the return to Britain. A British pet passport is not accepted for entry, and a new certificate is needed for each trip;
  • Up to five dogs per person. Puppies under the minimum age cannot enter;
  • For dogs, tapeworm treatment from a vet in Italy given between 24 and 120 hours before the return to Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Cats are exempt.

Three points specific to Venice

– Dogs ride free on the public water bus, one per passenger, with a lead and a muzzle. Italy requires a lead no longer than 1.5 metres in public and a muzzle on public transport, so carry one even if the dog never wears it. On a private water taxi the pilot decides, and most agree, but a dog that hesitates at the step between the quay and the boat will not enjoy the tide;

– The city is hard on four legs and on small paws in summer: more than four hundred footbridges with steps, crowds at the weekends and very little grass. We book a hotel near a park or on the Lido when the animal is the first priority, and we ask the hotel to confirm it accepts dogs in writing. Dogs are not allowed on the cemetery island of San Michele;

– The worming appointment for the way home has to happen in Italy inside the 24 to 120 hour window. There are vet clinics in Venice and in Mestre on the mainland, and we book one near where you are staying rather than sending you back towards the airport.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Venice calendar: a small city with a long list of crowded weeks

Venice has no single peak the way a ski resort has one. It has a run of events, each of which fills the hotels, the docks and the few private stands at the airport, and between them are stretches when the city is calm and a booking takes a day. Knowing which side of an event you are on matters more here than the choice of aircraft.

Late Jan to Shrove Tuesday
Carnival, from late January to Shrove Tuesday: the date follows Easter, so it falls in February in most years and can slip towards March. The last ten days are the heaviest, with the mask parades and the balls in the old palazzi
May to November
The Biennale, from May to late November. Art and Architecture alternate from one year to the next, each running for about six months at the Giardini and the Arsenale. The preview days in the first half of May are the sharp peak; the rest of the season is a long, steady load on hotels
Late May
The Boat Show and Vogalonga, late May: the Boat Show fills the Arsenale and the Vogalonga rowing race takes over a Sunday on the lagoon, so docks and hotels are both busy
Third weekend of July
Redentore, the third weekend of July: a bridge of boats to the Giudecca and fireworks on the Saturday night, with the St Mark's basin crowded with boats. Water taxis and hotels are booked long in advance
Late Aug and early Sep
The Film Festival, late August into early September: on the Lido, for ten days or more. Hotels on the island and in the city sell out, crew accommodation is hard to find, and private stand parking is limited
First Sunday of September
The Regata Storica, the first Sunday in September: the historic boats on the Grand Canal, a day when transfers on the water need to be timed with care
December
Christmas and New Year: markets and concerts through December, with fireworks over the St Mark's basin on New Year's Eve
December to March
Skiing, December to March. Venice and Treviso work as the doorway to Cortina and the Dolomites, and the onward leg matters more than the city does

What a peak week actually changes

Not the flying, and a great deal of everything around it. The aircraft is rarely the problem, because the European light and midsize fleet is large and Venice sits within reach of most of it. What runs short is the number of private stands at Marco Polo, the hotel rooms for the crew, and the water taxis, all at once and all for the same few days. A booking made late in Film Festival week can end up with the aircraft dropping you and flying to Treviso or Trieste to wait, with the crew in a hotel on the mainland. Made early, the same trip keeps its place on the apron. Outside the event weeks Marco Polo is a straightforward airport, with prior permission rather than a slot, and a charter can be arranged in a day or two.

Three levers on the price

  • Move off the event weeks if the trip allows it. A Tuesday in early June costs noticeably less than the same aircraft in the first week of September;
  • Let the aircraft leave. If the stay is long, the cheapest answer is often a drop-off and a return flight from Treviso or Trieste. It looks odd on paper and saves a night of apron fees and a night of crew;
  • Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise. On a two-hour sector the cabin upgrade buys comfort you will use for a short time and costs a sum you will notice.

Venice attracts a different mix from the business cities we cover. The people who book here are rarely going to a meeting in the centre; they are going to somewhere specific, for a reason with a date attached.

  • Weekend and short-stay trips, usually three nights, with a jet that drops the party and a boat that collects it at the dock;
  • Festival and exhibition travel around the Film Festival in late summer, the Biennale preview days in May and the Boat Show, with fixed dates and more luggage than people;
  • Carnival weekends, when the palazzi host the balls and a room in the old city is the point of the whole trip;
  • Ski trips through Treviso or Marco Polo to Cortina, where Venice is the transit point and the road or the helicopter is the real journey;
  • Business in the Veneto, which is mostly inland: Treviso, Padua and Verona are the destinations and Venice is only the nearest airport that fits the aircraft;
  • Sea and island connections, with Venice as the start of a summer leg to the Croatian coast or Sardinia.

The day trip deserves a word because it works here less well than it does to Milan or Paris. The flight takes two hours each way, the boat takes half an hour on top of it, and a same-day return leaves a few hours in the city at best. It is still possible, and an early departure from Biggin Hill with a late return is a defensible way to see a Biennale pavilion or a meeting on an island. The aircraft waits at Marco Polo, which is a real line in the quote, and a day visitor to the old city should check the city's access fee on selected peak days. For most clients we suggest one night, which changes the picture entirely.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual figure. The London to Venice corridor produces them for reasons that are particular to this airport.

Why this corridor generates them

– The stands. With only a few private stands at Marco Polo and parking approved for limited stays, an aircraft that drops passengers in the lagoon often cannot wait, so it leaves empty for Treviso, Trieste or home. That is an empty leg on the way out;

– The event weeks. The Film Festival, the Biennale openings and Carnival pull aircraft into Venice from across the continent and send them back within days, with the first movement full and the second empty;

– The ski season. Aircraft that carry skiers to Treviso for Cortina fly home empty, and the repositioning legs between the lagoon and the Alpine airfields are among the cheapest flying available in the region.

What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. A client who can name a window of a few days rather than one date has a good chance on this route, because legs tend to appear around the events. Whatever is listed is on our empty legs page, and we flag a Venice match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In most cities a helicopter is a luxury. In this part of Italy it is a practical answer to two problems: a lagoon city that road cannot enter, and a mountain valley where the road is the bottleneck. The difference is that the first is a small gain, and the second a large one.

Marco Polo to the old city
quicker than the boat, though the boat arrives at a hotel landing stage and the helicopter arrives at a pad that must be approved
8 to 12 minutes
Marco Polo to Treviso
31 km by road, which takes half an hour or more; useful when the jet has moved to the overflow field and the passengers have not
about 10 minutes
Marco Polo to Cortina d'Ampezzo
the Fiames heliport, against two hours or more on the SS51 in the ski season
about 30 to 35 minutes
Treviso to Cortina d'Ampezzo
137 km by road and the shorter flying leg of the two
about 25 to 30 minutes
Scenic flights over the Dolomites
offered from Cortina by a local operator, for individuals and for groups
on request

Three things worth knowing before you plan around one

– Weather rules the schedule. Cloud in the Dolomite valleys will stop a rotary flight on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a mountain transfer always carries a road alternative planned into the same day;

– A landing site must be approved in advance. In the lagoon the choice of pads close to the historic centre is narrow, and we confirm what is open for your hotel and your date before promising a helicopter. In Cortina we plan around the heliport at Fiames;

– The Film Festival and the ski weekends are when helicopter capacity itself runs short. In those windows the helicopter is booked with the jet or not at all.

The machines that work this region are chosen for mountains rather than distance. The Airbus H125 does most of the Alpine and Dolomite work, strong on the climb and untroubled by small landing sites. The wider-cabin H130 handles scenic transfers and short hops. For larger parties and longer legs the twin-engine H145 and the Agusta AW109 Grand New take over, and a twin is the sensible minimum for crossings of high ground. We book the helicopter alongside the jet so that both operators work to one set of timings.

Venice charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs, described without names and with a few particulars altered.

FILM FESTIVAL · THE AIRCRAFT WENT TO TREVISO

A party of four for the festival week

Farnborough - Marco Polo, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 05 min · 4 pax

The party wanted the jet on the ground for six nights. In festival week the private stands at Marco Polo are limited and long stays are cut back, so the aircraft dropped them, flew to Treviso to wait and came back for the departure. The hotel on the Lido took longer to find than the aircraft did. A booking made six weeks out would have kept more options, and on this airport the calendar, not the fleet, is what runs short.

CARNIVAL · THE BOAT WAS PART OF THE BOOKING

A couple for a three-night weekend

London Luton - Marco Polo, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 05 min · 2 pax

The palazzo hotel has its own landing stage, so the water taxi was booked with the aircraft and pulled up at the hotel's steps about half an hour after they left the terminal. The luggage was a masquerade ball's worth of costume and no light jet's hold would have taken it comfortably. They flew midsize for that reason alone.

SKI · TREVISO FOR CORTINA

Six skiers and a very full hold

London Luton - Treviso, Citation Latitude, about 2 h 05 min · 6 pax

Treviso is the nearer of the two airports for Cortina on the map, and on a clear day the road is ten or fifteen minutes quicker. They flew out on a Sunday rather than a Saturday to keep clear of the valley road, with a minibus waiting at the aircraft. The skis and boots set the aircraft class and not the number of seats.

BIENNALE · PREVIEW DAYS IN MAY

Two collectors, one night

Biggin Hill - Marco Polo, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 00 min · 2 pax

They asked for a day trip and ended with one night. Two hours each way plus the boat leaves little time among the pavilions, so we showed both quotes side by side: the aircraft waiting all day, against a hotel and a morning departure. The one-night version was the better trip and not much more expensive.

REDENTORE · ONE NIGHT ON THE WATER

A group of seven for the July weekend

London City - Marco Polo, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 00 min · 7 pax

The Saturday night fireworks fill the St Mark's basin with boats, so the arrival was timed for the afternoon and the water taxi was booked with the flight. The departure on the Sunday was planned around the crowds leaving the Giudecca. Docks and drivers, not the aircraft, were the constraint.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING HOME

A traveller with a flexible return

Marco Polo - London, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 2 h 05 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of three days rather than a date, which is what makes these work. A jet that had dropped passengers in the lagoon and could not stay on the apron was heading home empty and the seats were offered at a fraction of a fresh one-way charter. Because the stands at Marco Polo are few, legs like this tend to appear around the busy weeks.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Venice

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Venice?

About 2 hours from Biggin Hill or London City and a little over that from Luton, covering roughly 626 to 657 nautical miles. From Bristol or Birmingham allow around 2 hours 15 minutes, from Manchester about 2 hours 20 and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 40 to 2 hours 45. Add about half an hour on the water from the dock at the airport to the old city.

2How much does a private jet to Venice cost?

From about £9,000 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill and £9,400 from Luton. A midsize Citation XLS+ costs £11,700 from Southampton, and from Scotland allow £18,750 to £19,200 in a Challenger 350. The Film Festival weeks, Carnival and the Biennale preview days price well above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Venice?

Venice Marco Polo (VCE / LIPZ) for almost every trip. It is about 8 km in a straight line from the old city, a 24-hour airport of entry with a general aviation terminal, its own boat dock and no slot requirement, though prior permission is needed. Treviso (TSF / LIPH), 31 km away, is the overflow field and the better starting point for Cortina. Verona and Trieste are fallbacks, and the Lido and Padua airfields are too small for a jet.

4How do I get from the airport to a hotel in Venice?

By private water taxi from the dock next to the general aviation terminal, about 30 minutes to the San Marco basin, with a stop at the hotel's own landing stage where there is one. By road the car stops at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto after 25 to 35 minutes and the last stretch is on foot or by boat. A helicopter takes 8 to 12 minutes, subject to an approved landing site.

5Can I fly to Cortina d'Ampezzo from Venice?

Cortina is not a destination for a jet, so the usual route is a flight into Treviso, 137 km away, or Marco Polo, 148 km away, and then a transfer by road. A helicopter from Marco Polo to the heliport at Fiames takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Winter tyres or chains are required from November to April, and the road through the Cadore valley is busy on Saturdays.

6When should I book a private jet to Venice?

Outside the event weeks a day or two is usually enough, because Marco Polo needs prior permission and not a slot. For the Film Festival in late August and early September, Carnival, the Biennale preview days in May and the Redentore weekend in July, book at least a month ahead: private stands, crew hotels and water taxis all run short together, and a late booking tends to end up with the aircraft parked at Treviso.
