Private jet charter in Uganda

Eight and a half hours is all that separates Biggin Hill from the shore of Lake Victoria, and the aircraft crosses the Mediterranean and the whole of north-east Africa to get there. Uganda has one international airport, so the first question is not which airport but which aircraft, and the second is how the party gets from the runway at Entebbe to the safari strip. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Uganda that means a landing permit and a parking slot at Entebbe, a visa approval for every passenger, a handler on the apron and, for the parks, a turboprop booked for the last leg.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Uganda depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 flying nonstop to Entebbe International Airport and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Uganda?

Uganda keeps East Africa Time, three hours ahead of Greenwich all year round. The gap with Britain is three hours in winter and two in summer. A Praetor 600 that leaves Biggin Hill at nine in the evening, London time, in winter lands at Entebbe after about eight and a half hours at around half past eight in the morning, local time, which leaves a working day. Sectors to Entebbe, gate to gate, from the airfields our clients use most:

Biggin Hill to Entebbe
3,629 nautical miles, the closest of the London fields to Uganda, and the base for the price quoted at the top of the page
about 8 h 35 min
Farnborough to Entebbe
3,647 nautical miles, the usual field for Surrey, Hampshire and the Thames Valley
about 8 h 35 min
Edinburgh to Entebbe
3,931 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, about 300 nautical miles further than Biggin Hill
about 9 h 15 min

The distance settles the aircraft before the budget does

Entebbe lies 3,629 nautical miles from Biggin Hill. A Praetor 600 is published at about 4,000 nautical miles of range with four passengers and reserves, so the sector is comfortably inside its range with two aboard, and it is the aircraft behind the title price of this page. Entebbe stands at 1,153 metres and its main runway is 3,658 metres long, so the take-off for the way home is rarely the limiting factor. A Challenger 350, quoted at about 3,200 nautical miles, needs one technical stop on the way out, and a midsize jet such as a Citation XLS+, at about 2,100, needs two.

A stop adds about an hour and a half on the ground and a second set of landing and handling charges, shown as a line of its own in the quote. The operator files the route and the overflight permissions for every state along it.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Typical private jet charter prices from Britain to Entebbe, listed cheapest first. Every row is a nonstop Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for this run without a fuel stop. London City is left out on purpose, because its short runway is a poor start for a sector of this length:

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The departure airfield moves the price by a few thousand pounds. Edinburgh costs about £4,600 more than Biggin Hill on the same aircraft and Glasgow about £4,900 more, and each hundred nautical miles adds roughly £1,500 on a Praetor 600;

– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies back empty. On a return trip the aircraft either waits at Entebbe, with parking and crew accommodation as lines of their own, or flies home and returns for you.

The aircraft changes the figure more than the airfield does: from Biggin Hill a Global 6000 comes to about £99,300 and a Gulfstream G650ER to about £117,150, against £57,200 on the Praetor 600. The extra money buys cabin, room for six to eight people on a flight of more than eight hours, and range for the way home with a full load. For two or three passengers the Praetor is the sensible price point.

Two things worth knowing about the sectors inside Uganda

– The park airstrips are short, from about 1,100 to 1,800 metres, and are used by turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12 and the Cessna Caravan, not by jets, so the PC-12 price is the figure for almost every domestic leg;

– The gorilla country and Queen Elizabeth National Park are most of a day from Kampala by road, and the British government advises against driving outside the main towns after dark, so the turboprop is also the safer plan.

Business aviation airports in Uganda

There is one airport for the jet and a ring of airstrips for the turboprop, and the whole planning job is the join between them:

Airport Ground How it operates
Entebbe International
EBB / HUEN
On the shore of Lake Victoria, about 6 km south-west of Entebbe town and about 40 km by road from central Kampala, at 1,153 metres The only international airport and the answer for every jet from Europe. Runways of 3,658 and 2,408 metres, an ILS approach, customs and immigration on site, a tower open round the clock, jet fuel. Records list no slots, but a landing permit and parking slot are arranged before the flight
Jinja
Jinja airfield
About 95 km by air east of Entebbe, near the source of the Nile An unpaved runway of 1,688 metres, run by the civil aviation authority. A field for a turboprop when the plan is the Nile and not the road
Kasese and Mweya
Kasese / Mweya
Western Uganda, about 261 km and 283 km by air from Entebbe Kasese has a grass runway of 1,600 metres at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains, and Mweya one of 1,255 metres inside Queen Elizabeth National Park. Turboprop strips
Kisoro
KXO / HUKI
Far south-west, about 6 km north of the Rwanda border, at 1,900 metres A paved runway of 1,130 metres, the nearest airport to Bwindi and Mgahinga, the gorilla parks. A turboprop strip
Pakuba
Pakuba airfield
Northern Uganda, inside the Murchison Falls area, at 721 metres A murram runway of 1,760 metres, listed for Murchison Falls National Park. A turboprop strip
Kidepo
Kidepo airstrip
Far north-east, about 456 km from Entebbe, at 1,128 metres An unpaved runway of about 1,500 metres near the headquarters of Kidepo Valley National Park. The longest turboprop sector in the country

Entebbe has four ground handling companies, and for a private aircraft two matter. Entebbe Handling Services, trading as Menzies Aviation Uganda, is the largest and offers round-the-clock support for VIP and charter flights, with meet and greet, fast-track immigration and customs, and escorted transfers. DAS Handling also offers a round-the-clock team for VIP flights. Many flight support companies are listed for the field, and several are supervising agents who book services and do not work on the apron. We name the one we use in the quote.

The Karibuni lounge serves passengers, and a separate government lounge is for official and diplomatic travel with prior authorisation. Only ticketed passengers may enter the terminal building, so anyone meeting a party waits outside. Jet A-1 is listed, with UTC Operations and UCIG Energy among the suppliers.

Three points settle most Ugandan arrivals before a quote goes out:

Landing permit and parking slot

A foreign operator needs a landing permit from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and a parking slot, and an overflight permit where Ugandan airspace is crossed. One permit specialist suggests 24 to 48 working hours for a complete file. Another handler says its landing permits are valid for 24 hours and its overflight permits for 72 hours from the requested schedule.

Documents for a private flight

A private flight needs no air operator certificate. The file includes the schedule and routing, crew passports, the aircraft certificates, the insurance, the passenger list with passport copies and a local receiving party. Crew visas are usually issued on arrival and last about 72 hours.

Changes need a revised permit

A change of airport or a schedule outside the permit window means a new permit, and a domestic sector to an airstrip is a separate request. Entebbe itself never closes, but its administration works Monday to Saturday, so a Sunday request is made earlier in the week.

Arriving from Britain: visa, passports and customs

Uganda is not in any visa-free scheme for British passport holders, and the aircraft does not change that. Every passenger needs an approved visa before landing, and the approval is done online:

Visa
British citizens must have a visa to enter Uganda; the application is made online, the approval letter with its barcode is emailed and printed, and officials issue the visa on arrival. The official fee for a single-entry tourist visa is 50 US dollars, for up to three months, and the approval is valid for 90 days
apply online before the flight
East African Tourist Visa
an online visa costing 100 US dollars allows multiple entries into Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda over 90 days, which suits a trip that continues from Entebbe to Kigali or Nairobi
for a regional itinerary
Documents for the application
a copy of the passport page, valid for at least six months after arrival, a tour plan or itinerary, a hotel booking or the address of the accommodation, and a passport photograph, all in English
every passenger, children included
Health
the immigration service has stated that a yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer mandatory for entry; the British government points travellers to TravelHealthPro for vaccine and malaria advice
check before departure
Customs
strict customs rules apply and anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty has to be declared; military-style clothing, camouflage included, is illegal for everyone, including children, so leave it out of the safari bag
pack with this in mind

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Most other nationalities do.

Read the travel advice before you book

The British government says that terrorist attacks are very likely across Uganda, including in Kampala and in places popular with tourists, and that the western areas near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo have seen repeated attacks, in national parks among others. It advises against all travel to the Congolese provinces that border Uganda and to South Sudan. In Karamoja, in the north-east, it notes an increased security presence because of cattle theft. Photographing military, official or diplomatic sites is forbidden, the Owen Falls Dam near Jinja included.

For a private traveller the practical meaning is plain. Entebbe, Kampala, Jinja and the safari parks are not on the list of areas to avoid, but we read the advice against your itinerary every time, and the health pages, with their notes on outbreaks, are checked close to departure because border and screening measures can change at short notice. Travelling against the advice can invalidate insurance. A flight is confirmed only when the operator holds the route, the permissions and the insurance in writing.

Which airport for which part of Uganda

Every route starts at Entebbe, and the question is where the second leg ends:

Kampala, Entebbe and Lake Victoria
the capital is about 40 km from the airport, and most meetings and embassies are within a short drive of each other
Entebbe, by car or helicopter
Murchison Falls
the largest park in the country, in the north-west, with the falls on the Nile, and the Pakuba strip of 1,760 metres inside the area
Entebbe, then a turboprop to Pakuba
Queen Elizabeth and the Rwenzori
the park on the equator between lakes, with the Kazinga Channel, served by the grass strips of Kasese and Mweya, and the mountains behind them
Entebbe, then a turboprop to Kasese or Mweya
Bwindi and Mgahinga: the gorillas
the forests of the south-west on the borders of Rwanda and the Congo; the paved strip at Kisoro is the nearest airport, and Kihihi serves the north of Bwindi and the south of Queen Elizabeth
Entebbe, then a turboprop to Kisoro or Kihihi

The Ugandan year: two dry seasons and two wet ones

Uganda sits on the equator, so the seasons are measured by rain and not by temperature. Daytime highs are steady all year, usually between 24 and 30 degrees, and what changes is the road and the trail:

December to February
the first dry season, warm and clear, with water sports on the Nile at Jinja at their best in December; it overlaps with the Christmas holidays
dry, busy holiday weeks
March to May
the long rains, with muddy trails and slower roads; parks are quiet and rates are lower
wet
June to September
the second and longer dry season, clearer skies, firmer trails and the easiest gorilla trekking; August is especially good for game drives because the vegetation thins; early September is popular for chimpanzees in the Kalinzu forest
dry, peak safari season
October and November
the short rains return and travel is quieter again until December
wet

The rain, not the cloud, decides the road

A turboprop flies over the mud, but the last stretch from a grass airstrip to the lodge is on the ground, and in the wet months a short transfer can be slow. We build a buffer day into every itinerary that depends on a permit for a given date.

The Ugandan calendar: the martyrs, the dry seasons and the holidays

A few dates concentrate demand for aircraft, rooms and permits:

3 June
Uganda Martyrs Day, when thousands of pilgrims from Uganda, from across Africa and from further afield gather at the Namugongo shrine near Kampala to honour 22 Catholic martyrs. Roads around Kampala are crowded and rooms are scarce, so a party landing that week plans the ground transfer early
June to September
The longer dry season and the peak of the safari calendar, with the best conditions for trekking and game drives

What a season does to a flight plan

The dry months and the holiday weeks tighten the supply of aircraft and beds, and gorilla permits for the best dates sell out early, so book six to eight weeks ahead.

Flying to Uganda with a dog or a cat

Uganda is a hard destination for a pet. The Ugandan rules were written for animals imported as freight and include quarantine on arrival, and Britain does not list Uganda among the countries whose animals may come home on the ordinary rules, so the return needs a rabies blood test planned months ahead.

The one fact to read before you book

The Ugandan ministry of agriculture says that an import permit for a dog or a cat is issued by the Commissioner for Animal Health, who also sets the port of entry. The written application goes in at least seven days before the animal arrives, and the date of arrival is confirmed with the veterinary official at the port at least three days ahead. An official veterinary health certificate from the exporting country, in English, must travel with the animal, and after the first examination on arrival the animal goes to a quarantine or holding facility. The ministry states 21 to 30 days, with sampling and testing before release.

A Ugandan embassy page adds a health certificate signed and stamped within 10 days of shipment, vaccinations given at least 30 days before arrival (for a dog distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and rabies, for a cat feline enteritis and rabies) and a letter that the area of origin is free from rabies. None of this mentions a private aircraft, so whether the animal may travel in the cabin of your jet is something we confirm with the Ugandan authority in writing before we quote.

  • A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination, as the return to Britain requires, and the Ugandan import permit and health certificate;
  • For the return, a rabies blood test, because Uganda is not a listed country, and a Great Britain pet health certificate; GOV.UK counts three months from the date of the blood sample before an animal from a non-listed country may travel to Britain;
  • For dogs only, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. A cat needs no treatment.

GOV.UK tells owners to check the approved travel route for the return, and its guidance does not say how the rule applies to a private aircraft, so we confirm the entry point and the paperwork in writing before the flight. An animal that does not meet the rules can be quarantined for up to four months at the owner's expense.

Many owners decide that a stay of a week or two does not justify a quarantine of three or four weeks and leave the animal at home. Requirements for ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Many trips here are one-way by nature: a family flies out for a safari fortnight, and the aircraft comes home or moves on.

Where Ugandan empty legs come from

– Aircraft that take a family or a company party to Entebbe and fly back to Britain without passengers, which is the leg most often offered;

– Aircraft repositioning to Entebbe before the dry season;

– Regional legs between Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi and Addis Ababa.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. Typical Ugandan empty legs:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Entebbe - Nairobi Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £2,250
Kigali - Entebbe Phenom 300E 8 seats £2,400
Entebbe - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £24,000
Entebbe - UK (Farnborough) Praetor 600 9 seats £24,150
UK (London Luton) - Entebbe Praetor 600 9 seats £24,300
UK (Birmingham) - Entebbe Praetor 600 9 seats £24,650
UK (Manchester) - Entebbe Praetor 600 9 seats £25,000
UK (Edinburgh) - Entebbe Praetor 600 9 seats £25,950

How to read those figures

Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from London Luton to Entebbe at £24,300 with eight aboard comes to about £3,050 a head. A leg that points towards Britain is easier to find after the dry season, and an open return date helps.

Helicopter charter

A helicopter in Uganda is a tool for the edges of a trip, arranged case by case. We do not publish a standing service, because the machine, the crew and the permission for each landing site come from local operators. The times below are straight-line planning estimates from Entebbe:

Entebbe to Kampala
to the capital, in place of the road, which is slow at the busy hours
about 20 min
Entebbe to Jinja
to the town at the source of the Nile, a morning flight and not a long drive
about 35 min
Entebbe to the Murchison Falls area
to the falls on the Nile, a long sector for a helicopter
about 1 h 25 min
Entebbe to Bwindi
to the gorilla forest, usually flown as a transfer and not as a day trip
about 1 h 45 min

Typical machines are the Airbus H125 and H130 for short transfers and the H135 or Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. At altitude a helicopter carries less than at sea level, so the load is stated in the quote.

Before you plan around a helicopter

The Ugandan authorities control where a helicopter may land, and the national parks have their own rules, so we confirm permission for every landing site before we quote. A lodge lawn is not a site until it has been approved.

Ugandan charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

BWINDI · THE GORILLAS

Four adults and a permit date

Farnborough - Entebbe, Praetor 600, about 8 h 35 min · 4 pax

The trekking permit fixed the dates, and the jet was booked around them. The party slept at Entebbe and flew by turboprop to Kisoro the next day.

KAMPALA · A SHORT STAY

Two executives and a one-night visit

London Luton - Entebbe, Praetor 600, about 8 h 40 min · 2 pax

They left London in the evening, landed in the morning and flew home after a day of meetings in the capital.

KAMPALA · A DELEGATION

A group with a protocol officer

Birmingham - Entebbe, Praetor 600, about 8 h 45 min · 8 pax

The visa approvals came first, then the landing permit and parking slot, and a Sunday departure was moved to Saturday because the airport administration works Monday to Saturday.

MURCHISON FALLS · A SAFARI

A family of six and a long stay

Biggin Hill - Entebbe, Global 6000, about 7 h 55 min · 6 pax

The family wanted no stop and a cabin to sleep in, so we used a Global 6000. A turboprop took them to Pakuba and back while the jet waited at Entebbe.

WITH THE DOG · A QUESTION OF QUARANTINE

Two adults and a spaniel on a posting

Biggin Hill - Entebbe, Praetor 600, about 8 h 35 min · 2 pax + dog

The import permit and the quarantine period decided the plan before any aircraft did, and the rabies blood test for the way home was taken early because Uganda is not a listed country.

EMPTY LEG · A FLEXIBLE RETURN

An Entebbe departure with a window of three days

Entebbe - London Luton, Praetor 600 empty leg, about 8 h 40 min · 4 pax

The client gave us a window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £24,300, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a departure on the second day of the window.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Uganda

1How long does it take to fly to Uganda by private jet?

About 8 hours 35 minutes nonstop from London Biggin Hill to Entebbe on a Praetor 600, and 9 hours 15 minutes from Edinburgh. A smaller aircraft needs a technical stop of about an hour and a half. Uganda is three hours ahead of Britain in winter and two in summer.

2How much does a private jet to Uganda cost?

From about £57,200 one way from Biggin Hill to Entebbe on a Praetor 600, the smallest aircraft we price for the nonstop run. Edinburgh costs about £4,600 more on the same aircraft, and a Global 6000 from Biggin Hill is about £99,300. Hops to the parks start from £3,100 on a turboprop.

3Which airport should a private jet use in Uganda?

Entebbe International (EBB / HUEN), the only international airport of the country: a runway of 3,658 metres, customs and immigration on site and a tower open round the clock. The national parks are reached by turboprop from airstrips such as Kisoro, Kasese, Mweya and Pakuba.

4Do British passengers need a visa for a private flight to Uganda?

Yes. British citizens must have a visa, applied for online before the flight, with the approval letter shown on arrival. The official fee for a single-entry tourist visa is 50 US dollars, and the East African Tourist Visa for Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda costs 100 US dollars. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival.

5Can a private jet land near the gorillas in Bwindi?

No. The nearest airstrips, such as Kisoro with its paved runway of 1,130 metres and Kihihi, are short and are used by turboprops, not by jets. The usual plan is a jet to Entebbe, a night at Entebbe or a same-day transfer, and a Pilatus PC-12 or a similar turboprop to Kisoro, about 70 minutes in the air, followed by a drive to the trekking sector.

6Can I take my dog or cat to Uganda on a private jet?

It is hard. The animal needs a Ugandan import permit applied for in advance, an official health certificate in English, and, according to the ministry, a period in quarantine on arrival of 21 to 30 days. For the return Uganda is not a listed country, so the animal needs a microchip, a rabies blood test, a Great Britain pet health certificate and, for dogs, a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival. For a short trip most owners leave it at home.
