Private jet charter in Bilbao

Bilbao is the Basque gateway where a light jet and a heavy one are equally at home, and that shapes most of the charters we plan there from London. Private Jets UK builds the trip around the airport you land at and the programme you have on the ground. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Bilbao airport stands at Loiu, 9 km north of the city, with a main runway of 2,600 m and customs during airport hours, and it takes everything from a Phenom to a Gulfstream, while San Sebastián, Vitoria, Santander and Pamplona serve as smaller or inland alternatives. The choice among them depends on the plan for the day, not on the jet.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Bilbao depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Bilbao?

About 1 h 30 min from Farnborough or Cardiff in a Phenom, about 1 h 35 min from Biggin Hill in a light jet, and about 2 h 05 min from Edinburgh or Glasgow in a Challenger. Spain runs an hour ahead of Britain all year, so the clock on the wall at Loiu reads later than the flight time suggests. The British fields we use sit between 482 and 790 nautical miles from Bilbao, which makes it an easy light-jet sector from the south of England and a job for a larger cabin from the north. The table gives each field in turn.

Door to door, and the day it leaves you

Take off from Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and you touch down at Loiu at about twenty to ten local time. The airport is 9 km from the centre of Bilbao, customs and immigration run for the airport's opening hours, and your handler meets the aircraft at the stand, so there is no queue to join. From a central London office the whole trip takes about three and a half hours, and you can be in front of the Guggenheim before lunch. The return is where Bilbao earns its place on the shortlist. The airport stays open until 23:30 local time, and later by arrangement, so a day trip need not end before dinner.

Light, midsize or heavy: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four passengers with ordinary luggage, a light jet is enough. A Citation CJ3+ or a Phenom 300E crosses the sector in under two hours, and the money you save against a larger cabin goes further on the ground;

– Five to eight people, clubs, cases of wine from Rioja Alavesa on the way back, a team that wants a table to work at: ask for a midsize or a super-midsize alongside the light-jet quote. We show both figures and let you see what the extra cabin costs;

– Large and long-range jets are a normal visitor here. The main runway is 2,600 m long and has instrument landing systems at both ends, so a Gulfstream or a Falcon needs no special planning for the airfield. Airliner-size VIP aircraft are restricted to three listed stands, which we name at booking, and every aircraft needs a contracted handler on its flight plan.

Prices for the private jet flights to Bilbao

Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Bilbao airport. Bilbao BBK Live in July and Aste Nagusia in August can price above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

Bombardier Challenger 350 8 from £16,800
Edinburgh - Bilbao

Cabin size moves the price far more than the airport does. From Biggin Hill a Challenger 350 comes to about £12,000 one way, a Falcon 2000LXS to about £14,700 and a Gulfstream G450 to about £17,100. The same sector into San Sebastián is a little cheaper, which is why the airport rarely settles the choice. The runway, the hour of the return and the programme on the ground do.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. Onward from Bilbao: when the aircraft wins and when the car does

San Sebastián airport is 51 nautical miles from Bilbao, about half an hour in a Pilatus PC-12, against roughly an hour and ten minutes on the motorway between the two cities. Santander is 42 nautical miles away and about 100 km from Bilbao airport. Either hop is worth paying for only when the road leg would eat the day. The sectors that earn their cost are the long ones, Madrid and Barcelona, where the aircraft saves a morning against any other way of going. Spain and France are both inside the Schengen area, so after the first landing the later hops carry no passport control. One legal point needs care: a British-registered aircraft cannot simply carry passengers between two Spanish airports, so a domestic hop is arranged with an EU operator, and we choose the operator accordingly.

Before you accept an onward quote from Bilbao

– Who flies the leg. A flight between Britain and Spain is the ordinary case for a British operator, while a Spanish domestic leg can need an EU operator or approval from the national authorities, and that is checked before the quote is written, not after it;

– Whether the legs are one booking. Bilbao to Madrid and on to Lisbon over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of returning to base between stops.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Bilbao:

Light jets, for a short stay and a small party

Four or five people and a programme that stays in the city: a light jet is the economical way to Bilbao, and the airport gives it no trouble. Nothing here lacks the range, and the saving is better spent on the car and the table.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for wine cases and a team of six

A trip to Rioja Alavesa fills the hold faster than the seats: bottles, cheese, tinned fish from the market, golf clubs. A midsize cabin carries all of it with room for the party.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large, the natural fit for Bilbao

For a delegation, a family party or a trip that goes on to Madrid, Lisbon or beyond. Bilbao has a 2,600 m runway with instrument landing systems at both ends, which is exactly the margin these aircraft like, and no extra drive is needed to use it.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops inside the region: San Sebastián and Santander are about half an hour in the air, and the saving over a jet on those distances is large.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: a transfer from the airport to a winery or a restaurant in the hills, or a link to a jet that lands at another Basque airport. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Because Bilbao is the main business airport of the Basque Country, a quote may name Madrid, Biarritz or another Spanish field as the place where the aircraft is positioned from. That is normal for a region without a large based fleet, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports near Bilbao

One airport serves the city and four others matter for the wider Basque and Cantabrian programme. Which is right depends on where you are going and how large the aircraft is, not on the make of the jet.

Airport What it gives you
Bilbao
BIO / LEBB
The business aviation gateway of the Basque Country, in the municipality of Loiu, 9 km north of the city. Two runways: 12/30 at 2,600 m by 45 m, with instrument landing systems at both ends, and 10/28 at 1,910 m by the airport's own figures, though some reference books say about 2,000 m. On runway 30 the threshold is displaced, so the declared landing distance there is 2,140 m, and on runway 12 it is 2,540 m. Low-visibility procedures come into force when runway visual range drops below 550 m, and the main runway stays usable for take-off. The listed handlers for general aviation are Universal Aviation with its partner NIS, AviaVIP and United Aviation Services, and one must be named on the flight plan. Jet A-1 is supplied by Exolum and SLCA, and a Spanish tax number is required to refuel. We found no slot requirement and no curfew in the aeronautical information. Choose it for any size of jet, a late return, the Guggenheim, the coast of Bizkaia and the wine country
San Sebastián
EAS / LESO
The small airfield at Hondarribia, on the border with France, about 100 km from Bilbao by road and roughly 20 km from San Sebastián. Its runway is 1,590 m with 1,427 m of declared landing distance, and it is open from 07:30 to 21:45 local time. Choose it for a light or midsize jet and a programme that is mostly in San Sebastián, with Bilbao as the fallback for a bigger aircraft or a later departure
Vitoria-Gasteiz
VIT / LEVT
The inland airport of Álava, with a concrete runway of about 3,500 m. It is a working cargo field, home to a large DHL logistics centre, with a small scheduled passenger service, and about fifty minutes by road from Bilbao airport. Choose it when the programme is Vitoria itself or Rioja Alavesa and the jet is large, or as a diversion option when Bilbao is closed by weather
Santander
SDR / LEXJ
The Seve Ballesteros airport at Maliaño, on the bay of Santander in Cantabria, about 100 km west of Bilbao. The runway is about 2,420 m, a general aviation apron was built there, and runway 29 has a precision approach lighting system. Choose it when the programme is in Cantabria and Bilbao is simply the alternative on the day
Pamplona
PNA / LEPP
A regional airport 6 km from the city, in Navarre, with a runway of 2,207 m. The drive from Bilbao is about 155 km and takes just under two hours. Choose it when the programme is in Navarre, and treat Bilbao as the alternative when the aircraft is larger than the field likes

Four things to settle before a Bilbao landing:

The handler

Spain's aeronautical information lists three handlers for general aviation at Bilbao: Universal Aviation working with NIS, AviaVIP and United Aviation Services. It also lists two airline handlers. A contracted handler is mandatory for every flight apart from aircraft based at the airport, and its name goes into the remarks of the flight plan, or the plan is not cleared. We order the car, the catering and the reception through the handler. The aeronautical information does not list any of the large international FBO brands at this airport, so we confirm the handler and the meeting point for your date.

Hours and local time

Spanish aeronautical information gives its times in UTC unless it says otherwise, so we convert them. In local time (UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer) the airport is open from 06:45 to 23:30 all year. Air traffic services, handling and de-icing run from 06:30 to 23:50, and the airport lists an extension to about one in the morning, which the handler books for you. Fuelling runs from 06:00 to 23:50. There is no published slot system, but a stand is allocated through the handler.

Border and passport

Spain is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border at the first landing. The aeronautical information lists customs and immigration for the airport's opening hours. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU border system.

Car and the ría

The airport is 9 km from the centre of Bilbao, so the transfer is short. Tell us the hotel, the winery or the restaurant as well as the flight, so the driver waits where you come out. For the coast and for Rioja Alavesa the drive is the longer part of the day, and a late arrival should be planned with the handler's hours in view.

business aviation

Border, passport and the way back

The first landing in the Schengen area is where the formalities happen. At Loiu they are arranged through your handler for the opening hours of the airport, and the details of every passenger go to the handler with the flight plan. For the return to Britain the General Aviation Report is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure. A visitor who holds a British passport still has to meet the 90-day rule counted across the whole Schengen area, so tell us if the Bilbao trip is one of several European stays in the same half year.

From the apron to the Ría

Bilbao grew along its estuary, the Ría, which runs about 15 km from the point where the Nervión and the Ibaizabal meet to the sea. For a century the banks were steelworks and shipyards, and the city has spent the time since turning them into museums, parks and concert halls. The Guggenheim, designed by Frank Gehry and opened in the late nineties on the site of former docks, is the building the world knows, with 24,000 square metres of floor and 9,000 of galleries. It stands beside the river in the centre, close to Abando, the district that was annexed to the city in the nineteenth century and holds its park, Doña Casilda Iturrizar.

The Old Town is the opposite of all that. The Seven Streets, the Siete Calles, date from the Middle Ages and were completed in the fifteenth century, the Cathedral of St James and the Church of San Antón stand among the oldest buildings, and the pintxos bars sit on a tight grid that is easy to cross on foot. Norman Foster designed the metro, which makes the city simple to move through without a car. Mount Artxanda, reached by funicular from the centre, gives the view over the whole estuary.

Industry is still part of the city's story. The Altos Hornos de Vizcaya steelworks opened at the start of the twentieth century, Etxebarria Park was built on the site of a steel mill and kept its chimney, and the Carola crane at the Maritime Museum is the last element of the Euskalduna shipyard. The yard gave its name to the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall, home of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, and the old wine warehouse that Philippe Starck redesigned now holds the cinema, library and restaurant of Azkuna Zentroa. For a business visit this matters, because a meeting here often ends with a walk through the places where the work was done.

Food decides the dates for many clients, and the strongest tables lie outside the centre. According to the Basque tourist board, Azurmendi at Larrabetzu, near Bilbao, holds three Michelin stars.

Tables worth planning the flight around

– Three stars: Azurmendi at Larrabetzu, a short drive from the city, the only three-star house on the regional list;

– One star in the city: Nerua, Mina and Zortziko are listed by the tourist board among the one-star restaurants, and Etxanobe Atelier and Zarate have appeared on the regional lists alongside them;

– One star in the hills: Etxebarri at Axpe, the grill house that the regional helicopter operator names among its food routes. Tables at the top houses go months ahead, so send us the dates you hold before the aircraft is quoted, not after it.

Wine is the second reason to fly in. Rioja Alavesa is the part of the Rioja region that belongs to the Basque Country, and the wine villages sit about 130 km from Bilbao airport. The Marqués de Riscal hotel and winery at Elciego, designed by Frank Gehry and covered in titanium with pink, gold and silver tones, is the best-known building, and Ysios at Laguardia, 7 km away, is by Santiago Calatrava. Tours of the winery are reserved through its website and take 60 to 90 minutes. Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country, lies on the way and is worth an hour for its medieval quarter and for the Old Cathedral, a fortress-like Gothic church.

The coast is the third. Gaztelugatxe, the islet with a hermitage of St John the Baptist, is about 35 km east of Bilbao and 6 km beyond Bakio. Access is free, but a ticket booked in advance is needed from 10 am to 7 pm daily from mid-June to mid-September and at weekends from the last week of March to the end of October, and the pass is reserved online up to six months ahead. The dates change from year to year, so we check the booking calendar for your day. The path ends in 241 steps, and the bell at the top is rung three times for a wish. Further up the coast Urdaibai, a biosphere reserve around the estuary at Gernika, holds the surfing village of Mundaka, the fishing port of Bermeo and the Santimamiñe cave, with its traces of prehistoric settlement. Getxo, at the mouth of the Ría, has the Vizcaya Bridge, built in the nineteenth century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the oldest transporter bridge in the world.

Flying to Bilbao with a dog or a cat

Two things go wrong with a pet on a trip like this: the date on the health certificate and the vet appointment for the journey home. The flight is the easy part, because the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of under two hours most simply sleep.

private flight with animals

What an EU country such as Spain asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Bilbao run

– The tapeworm window on the way home. Spain does not ask for it on entry, only Britain does for a dog returning, so the vet visit is booked in Bilbao itself. Count back from the departure time, because a flight that slips by a day can move the 24 to 120 hours out of reach;

– The order of the chip and the vaccine. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be refused entry, so we read the certificate line by line before the flight;

– The coast with a dog. Gaztelugatxe has a ticket system and a stepped path, and each hotel, winery and pintxos bar sets its own rules for animals. Settle the hotel before the quote, and tell us if the programme goes on to another country, so that we check the paperwork there too.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Bilbao calendar: two festivals and a damp, green year

Bilbao has no closed season. The climate is oceanic, with rain through the year and mild temperatures, and the average high runs from about 13°C in January to about 26°C in August. Two festivals set the pace of the year, one in July and one in August, and knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

January to March
The quiet months. The weather is wet and cool, and rooms, tables and aircraft are easier to find than in summer. The airport has low-visibility procedures for fog, so a fallback plan is sensible
April to June
Green hills, long evenings and the start of the coastal season. Gaztelugatxe needs a booked ticket at weekends from the last week of March, and the wine villages of Rioja Alavesa are open for visits. The easiest time to organise a wine-and-art trip
July
Bilbao BBK Live, the pop and rock festival at Kobetamendi on Mount Cobetas, usually three days in July. Hotels and cars tighten
August
Aste Nagusia, the Big Week, nine days that begin on the Saturday after 15 August with the opening rocket and the figure of Marijaia, and end on a Sunday when she is burned. Fireworks, over a hundred concerts and a bar run by each festive group on El Arenal. The tightest stretch of the year in the city
September and October
The festivals are over and the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa are usually busy with the harvest. A good time for wine and for the Guggenheim without the crowds
November
Grey and wet, with no festival to compete for rooms or tables. A sensible month for a restaurant weekend or a short business visit
December
Short days and rain, and the restaurants are open as usual. Few events compete for rooms and aircraft, so quotes are simple

Why a festival week costs more

The aircraft are rarely the problem. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Bilbao is an easy sector for it, and the heavy jets that the airport suits are available in any week. What gets tight is everything around the aircraft: the hotel rooms, the cars, the drivers and the table you want. A booking made two weeks before Aste Nagusia or Bilbao BBK Live can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Madrid or Bordeaux, and that costs more. The same booking made four or five weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the two festivals a charter to Bilbao can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Bilbao price down

  • Move the dates by a few days where you can. The week after Aste Nagusia and the weeks between the festivals are calmer than the festival weekends themselves;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Madrid, Bordeaux or Biarritz takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
  • Compare the airports. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill the sector costs about £7,600 into San Sebastián, £7,750 into Bilbao or Santander, and £8,000 into Pamplona or Vitoria, so the difference is small and the programme on the ground should decide.

Types of flights

Bilbao produces a mix that differs from the beach or the ski destinations, because it is a working city with a famous museum, a serious kitchen and two good landscapes within an hour's drive.

  • Culture breaks built around the Guggenheim and the Old Town, usually a long weekend from the south of England;
  • Gastronomy trips, from a three-star dinner in the hills to a pintxos evening in the Seven Streets;
  • Wine days, flying into Bilbao and driving to Rioja Alavesa through Vitoria;
  • Coast and nature days: Gaztelugatxe, Urdaibai and the beaches of the Bizkaia coast;
  • Festival weekends for Bilbao BBK Live in July and Aste Nagusia in August;
  • Business visits and conferences, such as those at the Euskalduna centre, where delegations often want a same-day return, plus onward hops to Madrid or Barcelona.

The day trip is the one to look at closely. Land at about twenty to ten, leave Loiu at six in the evening local time and you are back at Biggin Hill at about twenty-five to seven in the evening, UK time, with about eight hours on the ground in between. The aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but a same-day return still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. We quote it both ways, so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Because Bilbao takes aircraft of every size, it sees more of them than the small airfields along the coast, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Bilbao empty legs come from

– Weekend trips. Aircraft that bring a party on the Friday and leave empty on the Sunday, or that arrive empty to collect one, put a leg on the market towards Britain or Madrid;

– Festival weeks. Bilbao BBK Live and Aste Nagusia produce one-way arrivals followed by a repositioning flight home, and an outbound leg on the Monday morning is the one most often offered;

– Spanish loops. Operators moving aircraft between Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián and the north coast put short hops on the market, and those hops can be cheap.

A client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Bilbao match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In Bilbao a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The city is crossed by metro and car, and the places where rotary flight changes the journey are the hills and the vineyards, the restaurants that are hard to reach and the link with a jet that lands at another airport. Public scenic flights in the Basque Country are listed as leaving from the airport at Hondarribia, near San Sebastián, not from Bilbao, while private helicopter transfers and charters are offered from the airports of Bilbao, San Sebastián, Biarritz, Vitoria and Pamplona to wineries, restaurants and other destinations. At Bilbao there is no separate helicopter area: the aircraft are cleared to land on the runway in use, and the airport has marked stands for them.

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a hotel terrace or a vineyard before the quote is written, not after it;

– Weather sets the schedule. Cloud and strong wind can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– Noise rules apply at the airport. Helicopters in the circuit avoid overflying Erandio, Sondika, Loiu, Zamudio and Derio except for safety, which can shape the routing, and helicopters of Bell 212 size or heavier use the circuit of the shorter runway for landing. Tell us the landing site at the other end when you ask for the quote, and book the helicopter together with the jet.

The machines normally used for this work are the Airbus H125 for scenic and mountain flying, the wider H130 for transfers, and the H135 or the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Bilbao charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

CULTURE WEEKEND · THE GUGGENHEIM

A long weekend that did not need a car

Farnborough - Bilbao, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax

Two couples wanted the museum, the Old Town and one good dinner, and nothing in between. We matched a Friday morning arrival with a Sunday afternoon departure, the handler arranged the car for the short run to the hotel, and the party walked everywhere else. A light jet was the right size and the runway never came into the conversation.

WINE · A FAMILY PARTY OF EIGHT

Rioja Alavesa by road, with the cases coming home

Biggin Hill - Bilbao, Challenger 350, about 1 h 30 min · 8 pax

Eight people, a driver booked for two days of cellars around Elciego and Laguardia, and a hold that filled on the way back. A midsize cabin would have carried them, but the party wanted to sit round one table, so the quote was written in a Challenger and the extra cost was set out beside the cheaper option.

BBK LIVE · A FESTIVAL WEEKEND

Land on the Friday, leave on the Sunday night

London Luton - Bilbao, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 35 min · 5 pax

The booking was made early because hotels and cars tighten in July. The party flew out on Friday morning and took a late flight home on Sunday, with the aircraft waiting at the airport that stays open until 23:30 local time, so the last act of the festival was not cut short.

A LATE RETURN · AFTER THE FIREWORKS

Aste Nagusia evening, home by midnight

London Luton - Bilbao, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 35 min · 6 pax

The client wanted the evening of the fireworks in the city and a departure at about half past ten at night. Bilbao is open until 23:30 local time, and the handler confirmed the stand in advance, so the party left from the airport at the hour it had asked for, which would have been impossible at the smaller coastal field.

A DOG ON BOARD · THE PAPERWORK FIRST

Four adults and two spaniels for a long weekend

Cardiff - Bilbao, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax + dogs

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment in Bilbao for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft and the hotel accepted the dogs, so the whole thing was settled in one exchange of messages rather than three.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING NORTH

A jet already going your way

Bilbao - Farnborough, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 30 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday afternoon departure to the south of England.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Bilbao

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Bilbao?

About 1 hour 30 minutes from Farnborough in a Phenom and about 1 hour 35 minutes from Biggin Hill or Luton, covering roughly 506 to 546 nautical miles. From Birmingham or Manchester allow about 1 hour 40 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 5 minutes. Spain is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure from Biggin Hill lands at about twenty to ten local time.

2How much does a private jet to Bilbao cost?

From about £7,650 one way in a Phenom from Farnborough or Cardiff, £7,750 on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, £7,850 from London City and £8,150 in a Phenom from Luton. A midsize cabin runs £9,100 to £10,450 from the south and the Midlands, and from Scotland allow about £16,850. Bilbao BBK Live in July and Aste Nagusia in August can price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Bilbao?

Bilbao airport (BIO / LEBB) at Loiu, 9 km north of the centre, takes aircraft of every size: the main runway is 2,600 m, both ends have instrument landing systems, and the airport is open from 06:45 to 23:30 local time, later by arrangement. San Sebastián (EAS) is a smaller airfield with a 1,590 m runway about 100 km away, while Vitoria (VIT), Santander (SDR) and Pamplona (PNA) serve inland and Cantabrian programmes.

4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Bilbao?

Britain is outside Schengen and Spain is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs at the first landing. The aeronautical information lists customs and immigration for the airport's opening hours, and your handler arranges them. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. The operator and our team handle the aircraft paperwork.

5What time does Bilbao airport close for private jets?

Spanish aeronautical information gives its times in UTC, which in local time (UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer) means the airport is open from 06:45 to 23:30 all year. Handling and air traffic services run from 06:30 to 23:50, and an extension to about one in the morning is listed, which the handler books for you. The aeronautical information shows no slot system or curfew.

6Can I take my dog to Bilbao on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and an EU country such as Spain asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. Spain does not ask for a tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
