Algiers does nearly all of the work, and nobody should expect the infrastructure of Nice or Geneva. Flying to Algeria with a dog or a cat

The cabin is not the problem: the animal sits beside you and nothing goes into the hold. The paperwork is. Algeria is not on either of Britain's lists of listed countries, so an animal coming home needs a rabies blood test planned months before the flight.

• A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination, as the return to Britain requires;
• A rabies vaccination, inside the Algerian window for the outward trip;
• The Algerian health certificate, issued by a vet and endorsed shortly before departure, with the vaccination record attached;
• For the return, a rabies blood sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, with an antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml, then a wait of three months from the sample date, and a Great Britain pet health certificate issued within 10 days of travel;
• For dogs only, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. A cat needs no treatment.

The three-month wait is the one to plan around, because it runs from the blood sample, so the test is done before the animal leaves Britain. GOV.UK also tells owners to use an approved travel route for the return and does not say how that applies to a private aircraft, so we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight. An animal that does not meet the rules can be placed in quarantine for up to four months at the owner's expense.
