Private jet charter in London

London is the one city on our list that is also home, and that changes the question: a client landing here is rarely asking whether to come, only which of nine airfields to use. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around the airfield, the hour and the address at the other end. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. London has no single private-jet airport. It has a ring of them, from Northolt in the west to Southend on the Thames estuary, and each one sets its own hours, runs its own handlers and decides for itself how large an aircraft it will take, so the choice of field matters here more than the choice of cabin.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of a private jet charter to London depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Paris Le Bourget, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to London?

Under an hour from Paris or Amsterdam, about 1 hour 25 minutes from Geneva and a long day in the air from Dubai or New York. London is the end of a great many European private-jet routes, and the flight itself is rarely the awkward part. What shapes the day is the airfield: the same Phenom from Geneva can land at Farnborough, Biggin Hill or Luton and put you in very different corners of the city. Clocks in London run an hour behind Paris and Geneva, so a short hop can land before the departure time looks as if it should allow. The table gives still-air times from each origin to the field we would normally quote for it, and wind moves the long sectors by an hour or more either way.

From the departure lounge to the desk in town

Take off from Paris Le Bourget at nine in the morning and you touch down at London City a little before nine, London time, because the clocks go back an hour. The Docklands Light Railway runs from the airport to Bank in about 22 minutes, and Canary Wharf is only about three miles west of the runway, so a client who left Le Bourget at nine can be at Bank by about half past. By scheduled service the same journey eats most of the morning. The saving is not the flying time. It is the airport: no check-in queue at either end, a business-aviation terminal instead of the main concourse, and an arrival field chosen to sit next to the meeting rather than next to a motorway.

Which size of aircraft a London arrival actually needs

– Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and Jersey are light-jet or turboprop work. Up to four people with ordinary bags, a CJ3+ is the right answer, and a PC-12 is cheaper still from Jersey. London City and Northolt are the two fields where the aircraft has to fit the airfield: London City takes only types certified for its steep approach, and Northolt allows no more than 29 passengers;

– Geneva, Zurich, Munich, Milan and Nice are sectors of an hour and a half to two hours, and the line between light and midsize is the luggage. Ski bags, golf clubs and evening dress push a party into a midsize cabin before the seat count does;

– Madrid, Palma and Athens run from two to three and a half hours, which is Latitude or Challenger 350 territory for a family or a team. Dubai and New York need a long-range heavy such as a Global 6000, because nothing smaller flies the distance without a fuel stop, and we quote on range with the winds rather than on the brochure figure.

Private jet flights from London

A large part of European private flying starts in London: the Alps in winter, the Riviera and the Balearics in summer, the Gulf when the weather turns, and Paris or Amsterdam on any weekday. The departure airfield changes the quote more than people expect, because airfield charges and the positioning leg differ from one field to the next, so each route below starts from the field we would normally use. Departing London: pick the airfield by the direction of travel

Biggin Hill sits to the south-east, London City and Southend to the east, Northolt to the west and closest to the West End, and Farnborough to the south-west on the way to Surrey, Hampshire and the M3 and M4 corridors. Luton and Stansted take the north, with a fast train into St Pancras or Liverpool Street as a fallback. Leaving from the field nearest to the passengers can save an hour on the road, which on a flight to Paris of about 45 minutes is the larger part of the journey.

Before you accept a London departure quote

– The hours of the field, not just of the flight. Farnborough works from about 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and closes earlier at weekends, London City is shut from Saturday lunchtime to Sunday lunchtime, and Northolt needs prior permission for every movement. A quote that ignores them is a quote that will change;

– Whether the aircraft suits the field. London City accepts only certified types, Biggin Hill has a runway of about 1,800 m, and a long-range jet loaded for Dubai or New York belongs at Farnborough, Stansted or Luton, where the runway runs to 2,160 m or more;

– Whether the itinerary is one booking. A weekend with a Geneva leg out and a Nice leg back costs noticeably less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning to London between each stop.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h
Medium-sized jet (Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP)£3,000 - 3,700/h
Large medium-class jet (Challenger 300)£4,600 - 5,500/h
Large jet (Legacy 600)£4,900 - 5,800/h
Long-haul jet (Global 5000, G550, Falcon 7X)£5,800 - 8,800/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for London:

Light jets, and where most London bookings land

Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and the Channel Islands are short enough that a light jet is the sensible default for four or five people. Check the field before the aircraft: London City accepts only certified types, so a quote for it names the model.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for ski kit and a week of luggage

Geneva, Zurich, Munich and Nice are long-hour sectors where the hold decides and the seat count does not. Skis, boots and a family wardrobe fill a light-jet baggage compartment faster than people expect.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize, large and long-range

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for Jersey and other sectors of about 141 nautical miles or less, where the saving over a jet is large and the runway at the far end can be short.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight into Britain but for the last stretch: from an airfield to the Battersea heliport, to a racecourse or to a country house. Landing sites and times are agreed before the quote, since London has strict rules on both.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Many business aircraft are based in or near London, and Farnborough alone sees around 30,000 movements a year, so for a booking that falls outside the event weeks there is usually an aircraft within an hour of the field you want, and that is often where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in London

There is no single answer here, which is unusual for a capital. Nine airfields take business jets, two more sit further out, and a quote that arrives with one of them in it deserves a second look. Here is what each one gives you.

Airport What it gives you
London Farnborough
FAB / EGLF
The only London airport that exists purely for business aviation. About 35 miles south-west of the centre, with a single 2,440 m runway, a single FBO run by the airport itself and Border Force cover that we confirm for your arrival time. Typically open from 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends, with no extensions, and it works on prior notice rather than airline-style slots. Allow 60 to 80 minutes by road or 15 to 18 by helicopter. The natural field for the west and south-west
London Biggin Hill
BQH / EGKB
The business airfield for the south-east, 12 nautical miles south-south-east of the centre. A runway of about 1,800 m with an instrument approach to runway 21 and a visual circle-to-land when runway 03 is in use, customs and immigration on site, and two handlers, Biggin Hill Executive Handling and Jetex. Typically open from 06:30 to 23:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 22:00 at weekends, with prior permission needed for the first departures of the morning and the last arrivals of the night. A helicopter shuttle to Battersea takes 6 to 12 minutes
London Luton
LTN / EGGW
The big-cabin airfield for the north. A 2,162 m runway, customs round the clock and two handlers, Signature and Harrods Aviation. Open all hours in principle, but in the summer months night movements are rationed to a handful a month and only for the quietest aircraft, and noise fines are routine. About 35 miles from the centre, 60 to 90 minutes by road, and trains from Luton Airport Parkway reach St Pancras in as little as 22 minutes. International pet clearance is available
London Stansted
STN / EGSS
The round-the-clock choice and the sensible tech stop for the south-east. A 3,049 m runway, a separate business-aviation side with five operators, Harrods Aviation, Inflite Jet Centre, Universal Aviation, XJET and Fayair, and Border Force on site. Noise rules bite after 23:30 and night slots for business aviation are tight in summer. About 31 miles north-east of the centre, around 50 minutes by road, 45 to 53 minutes on the Stansted Express and 10 to 12 by helicopter
RAF Northolt
NHT / EGWU
The closest field to the West End, about 12 miles out, and a working RAF station that also takes private flights. Prior permission is required, civil movements are capped, private flights are limited to 29 passengers and security is especially stringent. Universal Aviation is the handler, the runway is about 1,700 m, and typical hours are 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays with shorter weekends. It is not a designated point of entry for pets, which is a problem for anyone arriving with a dog
London City
LCY / EGLC
Three miles east of Canary Wharf and about six miles from the City. A 1,508 m runway, a 5.5 degree approach and rules to match: only multi-engine fixed-wing types with the right certification, and crews trained for it, which in practice means light and some midsize jets and turboprops. Open about 06:30 to 21:30 on weekdays, 06:30 to 12:30 on Saturday and 12:30 to 21:30 on Sunday, with a dedicated Jet Centre and very little parking, often a few hours at most
London Heathrow
LHR / EGLL
Useful mainly when the passengers connect to an airline. Runways of 3,902 m and 3,660 m and a handling agent in Signature, but the airport runs close to capacity, business aviation gets no night slots and the night quota applies from 23:30 to 06:00. The Windsor, the airport's VIP terminal, is built for airline First and Business Class passengers, not for chartered jets. Fourteen miles west of the centre, 15 minutes to Paddington on the Heathrow Express
London Gatwick
LGW / EGKK
Open round the clock on paper, with no night slots for business aviation and parking limited to a day. A main runway of 3,316 m and Signature as the handler. About 30 miles south of the centre, around 30 minutes to Victoria on the Gatwick Express. A sensible choice when the passengers are heading to Sussex or Surrey, and a poor one when the aircraft needs to stay
London Southend
SEN / EGMC
The late-evening option on the Thames estuary. A 1,856 m runway, a former passenger terminal converted into the London Southend Jet Centre with its own hangar, and hours that typically run from 06:00 to 01:30, later than any other field on the list. About 36 miles from the centre, with trains to Liverpool Street in around 55 minutes
Oxford and Blackbushe
OXF / EGTK, BBS / EGLK
Two outliers. Oxford is about 60 miles from London, open from 06:30 to 22:30 and noticeably cheaper in handling fees, and Blackbushe lies roughly 40 miles south-west, takes light jets and turboprops up to a Citation or a Falcon 7X and puts efficiency ahead of lounges. Worth a look when the meeting is in the Thames Valley rather than in town

Four points settle most London arrivals:

Choose the airfield by the address

Mayfair and the West End are closest to Northolt, the City and Canary Wharf to London City and Biggin Hill, and Surrey and the M3 and M4 corridors to Farnborough. Luton and Stansted take the north, with a train into St Pancras or Liverpool Street as a fallback. We ask where you are going before we ask where you are flying.

Hours, slots and noise

London's fields keep very different hours. Farnborough and Biggin Hill ask for prior notice instead of airline-style slots, London City closes on Saturday afternoon, Northolt works by prior permission, and Heathrow and Gatwick give business aviation no night slots. Stansted and Luton stay open, with noise rules after 23:30 and tight summer limits at Luton. For a late departure we confirm in writing first.

Border and passport

Britain is outside Schengen and keeps its own entry rules. Each passenger needs a valid passport, an EU identity card is not accepted, and most visitors who do not need a visa need an electronic travel authorisation before boarding. The operator files a General Aviation Report with Border Force, and the handler pre-arranges the clearance.

Car and late nights

Ordinary taxis often fail to find a business-aviation terminal, so we book a prepaid car through the handler and give the driver the handler's name as well as the airfield. For late arrivals into Farnborough, London City or Northolt, put the car and the crew's hours into the quote from the start, because the field may shut before the car arrives.

business aviation

Border, passport and the General Aviation Report

Arriving in Britain by private jet is simple when the paperwork is right and expensive when it is not. The operator submits a General Aviation Report to Border Force no earlier than 48 hours and no later than two hours before departure, and Border Force can grant permission to enter by email or telephone, as long as it arrives before the passengers leave the aircraft. Every passenger needs a passport that proves identity and nationality. Visitors who do not need a visa, which covers most travellers from Europe and the USA, usually need an electronic travel authorisation instead, valid for stays of up to six months, while British and Irish passport holders do not. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens must travel on a passport, because identity cards are not accepted for entry. An operator who carries a passenger without the right permission can be charged £2,000 for each one, which is why we check every name against the rules before the aircraft is released.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

From the apron to Mayfair

London is a city you cross, not a city you walk, and the distances that decide a day are the ones between the airfield and the meeting. The card below gives the usual road, rail and helicopter times from each field to the centre. They are ranges, because traffic sets the rest.

RAF Northolt to the West End
about 12 miles, the closest field to Mayfair and Park Lane
30 to 35 minutes
London City to Canary Wharf and the City
about three miles east of Canary Wharf, with the DLR to Bank in about 22 minutes
20 to 45 minutes
Biggin Hill to central London
12 nautical miles south-south-east, or 6 to 12 minutes by helicopter shuttle to Battersea
45 to 60 minutes
Heathrow to Paddington
about 14 miles west, with the non-stop Heathrow Express taking around 15 minutes
30 to 60 minutes by road
Farnborough to central London
about 35 miles south-west, or 15 to 18 minutes by helicopter
60 to 80 minutes
Luton to central London
about 35 miles north, with trains from Luton Airport Parkway reaching St Pancras in as little as 22 minutes
60 to 90 minutes by road
Stansted to central London
about 31 miles north-east, with the Stansted Express taking 45 to 53 minutes to Liverpool Street
about 50 minutes by road
Southend to Liverpool Street
about 36 miles, with trains usually every 20 minutes
about 55 minutes by rail

Flying to London with a dog or a cat

Britain applies its own pet rules to arrivals, private jets included, and they ask for more paperwork than the flight takes in time. Airlines usually carry animals as cargo, whereas on a chartered private plane the animal can sit in the cabin, which makes a charter one of the easiest ways to bring a dog or a cat into the country. The animal usually sits beside you. What matters is the order in which the steps are done.

private flight with animals

What Britain asks for:

  • A microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination and not after it;
  • A rabies vaccination, with at least 21 full days elapsed after the first vaccination (or the last of the first course) before the animal travels, and in some departure countries a blood test as well;
  • A pet travel document from a vet in the country of departure: a pet passport, an animal health certificate or a Great Britain pet health certificate, depending on where you start;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment given no less than 24 hours and no more than five days before arrival;
  • A pet travel declaration, signed if the animal is not going to be sold or transferred;
  • No more than five animals, because a larger number brings the commercial import rules into play unless you are attending a competition, show or sporting event;
  • A charter operator authorised to carry pets into Britain and an entry check on arrival, which at Luton is done on the aircraft in about ten minutes with 24 hours' notice.

What catches owners out on the London run

– Not every operator and not every airfield will take an animal. The operator must hold authorisation to carry pets on a charter, and the arrival field needs a pet entry arrangement. Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Luton and Stansted have one, while RAF Northolt takes domestic pet arrivals only. We settle both before the quote;

– The tapeworm window is the step that trips people up. Between 24 hours and five days before arrival means a vet appointment at the place you are leaving, timed to the flight, and not something done at home a week earlier;

– A pet that does not meet the rules can be held in quarantine for up to four months at the owner's cost, and a banned dog breed cannot enter without a Certificate of Exemption. From the Republic of Ireland no approved route is needed, so a flight from Dublin carries lighter paperwork than most.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The London calendar: a season of set-piece days

London has no off-season for private flying, but it has dates that drive demand: the garden show and the racing of late spring, the tennis and the regatta of high summer, the airshow in July of every other year and the art fair in October. The rest of the year runs on steady business travel, and knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

April
The London Marathon, held on a Sunday in April. The event takes over streets in the capital, so the car from the airfield is worth planning with the handler in advance
May
Chelsea Flower Show: five days in May in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Small parties in town for a day or two, usually landing at the field nearest the West End
June
The Derby and Royal Ascot: the Derby is run on the first Saturday in June at Epsom Downs in Surrey, and Royal Ascot lasts five days from a Tuesday in the third week of June, about 25 miles west of London. Both fall in June, so race-day bookings bunch together
Late June to July
Wimbledon, Henley, Goodwood and Silverstone: Wimbledon runs for two weeks from late June, Henley Royal Regatta for six days ending on the first weekend of July, the Goodwood Festival of Speed falls in late June or early July, and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, roughly halfway between London and Birmingham, is typically in July. Demand is at its widest and helicopter capacity goes first
July, every other year
Farnborough International Airshow: five trade days in mid-July in even-numbered years. Farnborough Airport itself advises booking well ahead for those weeks, because business jets from all over the world arrive in the same few days
October
Frieze London in Regent's Park, with Frieze Masters alongside it: a week of gallery visits and short stays, and a good reason to ask for an airfield close to the West End

Why a set-piece week costs more

Not the flying. Aircraft are plentiful in and around London. What tightens is the ground: parking at Luton and London City, the evening hours of fields that close at 22:00 or earlier, and a heliport at Battersea with room for three or four aircraft. A booking made a fortnight before Royal Ascot or Wimbledon can still be done, but it may pay for an aircraft positioned from another country and a car that is not the one you wanted. The same request placed five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those dates London is one of the easiest cities to charter into, and a day or two is usually enough.

Ways to bring the London price down

  • Choose the field for the trip and not for the postcode. When the meeting is in the Thames Valley rather than in town, Oxford costs an hour on the road but charges much lower handling fees than the inner ring;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet already in London or the Home Counties needs little positioning, and on a sector of 150 to 250 nautical miles positioning is a meaningful share of the bill;
  • Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise. Four people and four bags do not need a midsize, and the money saved pays for the car and the hotel.

Types of flights

London produces a different mix from the resort and capital destinations we cover, because it is a financial centre, a sporting calendar and a gateway to the Gulf and North America all at once.

  • Business shuttles from Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva and Zurich to the City, Canary Wharf and Mayfair, usually same-day and usually in a light jet;
  • Long-haul arrivals from the Gulf and North America in heavy jets, normally into Farnborough, Stansted or Luton and often with a helicopter on to town;
  • Race, tennis and garden-show days: Ascot, Epsom, Wimbledon, Henley, Chelsea, Goodwood and Silverstone;
  • Airshow and trade traffic around Farnborough in July of every other year;
  • Outbound leisure from London: the Alps in winter, the Riviera and the islands in summer, the Gulf when the weather turns;
  • Art-fair weeks and short city breaks, mostly small parties and mostly for one or two nights.

The same-day return is a common London arrival and it is worth a closer look. A day trip from Paris to London City takes about 45 minutes each way, and the aircraft and crew wait at the airfield rather than going home. That waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters, and it gives you a full working day in the capital and your own bed at night. On these routes we quote the day return both ways so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. In and out of London they follow the calendar rather than the clock, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where London empty legs come from

– Event weekends. Aircraft arrive for Ascot, Wimbledon or Goodwood and leave empty a day or two later, and the Sunday evening leg back to the Continent is the one most often offered;

– The ski rotation. Through the winter, operators move aircraft between London and the Alps, and the Saturday and Sunday changeovers leave empty sectors in both directions;

– The Gulf and North America. Long-range jets that bring a party in often go home empty, and a leg of that length is a large saving for anyone who happens to be going the same way.

Because London is so busy, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a London match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In London a helicopter is a tool for the last stretch, not the first. The city has one licensed heliport, on the south bank of the Thames at Battersea, and most of the value lies in how fast it connects to the airfields on the edge.

Biggin Hill to Battersea
the shortest hop to the heliport, against 50 to 80 minutes by car
6 to 12 minutes
Farnborough to Battersea
against 60 to 90 minutes by car
about 18 minutes
Luton to Battersea
against 65 to 95 minutes by car
about 18 minutes
Stansted to central London
against about 50 minutes on the road
10 to 12 minutes
Northolt to central London
for a West End arrival that cannot wait for the traffic
about 10 minutes
London City to central London
the closest pairing, and the one clients most often skip
6 to 8 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– Battersea is small, with room for three or four aircraft, and flights are permitted only from 07:00 to 23:00. Its normal hours are shorter, from 07:30 to 19:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 18:00 at weekends, and anything later is arranged in advance;

– The heliport has no permanent customs or immigration presence. Flights from abroad must be notified to Border Force beforehand, and an arrival whose clearance is incomplete can be diverted to an airfield that has it. We clear passengers at the airfield first and fly on from there;

– Noise rules shape every approach. Circuits are flown over the river, and routes through the local flying area require twin-engine machines, so the aircraft, the time and the landing site are agreed before the quote.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H130 for compact transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the AW139 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

London charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

BUSINESS HOP · THE MORNING SHUTTLE

A Paris meeting that starts in the City

Paris Le Bourget - London City, Citation CJ3+, about 45 min · 4 pax

Wheels up at nine from Le Bourget, on the ground at London City a little before nine London time and on the DLR to Bank within the half hour. The aircraft waited at the Jet Centre for the return rather than going home, which is a real line in the quote and still comes in below two separate one-way charters. It is a short day and it works.

ROYAL ASCOT · THE WEEK BOOKED FIRST

A party of six for the racing

Geneva - Farnborough, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 25 min · 6 pax

The dates were set by the meeting and not by the client, so the aircraft was booked weeks ahead and the car and the return slot were booked with it. Landing at Farnborough put the party on the south-western side of London, in the direction of the racecourse and well clear of town, and the return left on the Friday evening before the field closed.

LONG HAUL · NIGHT ARRIVAL

A family in from the Gulf

Dubai Al Maktoum - London Stansted, Global 6000, about 6 h 45 min · 6 pax

Stansted was chosen because the field stays open round the clock, the runway is long enough for a fully fuelled heavy and Border Force is on site. The family landed after dark, cleared at the terminal and was in the car within minutes. A fuel stop was never on the table, so the quote carried a Global 6000 from the start.

A DOG ON BOARD · THE PAPERWORK FIRST

Four adults and a spaniel coming home from Nice

Nice - Farnborough, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 50 min · 4 pax + dog

The operator had to be authorised to carry pets on a charter, the arrival field had to have a pet entry arrangement, and the tapeworm treatment had to be given at a Nice vet between 24 hours and five days before landing. We booked all three with the aircraft and the dog was checked in a few minutes.

TRANSATLANTIC · THE HELICOPTER ON

A New York team and a City meeting at noon

New York Teterboro - Farnborough, Global 6000, about 6 h 50 min · 5 pax

An overnight crossing that landed in the morning, with a helicopter waiting to take the team to Battersea in about 18 minutes instead of an hour or more by road. The passengers cleared Border Force at Farnborough first, because the heliport has no permanent customs presence, and the helicopter was booked on the same timetable as the jet.

EMPTY LEG · SATURDAY MORNING OUT

A jet already going your way

London Luton - Geneva, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 30 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the week and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Saturday morning departure to the Alps.

Frequently asked questions about flying to London

1How long is a private jet flight to London from Paris, Geneva or New York?

About 45 minutes from Paris Le Bourget to London City in a Citation CJ3+, about 1 hour 25 minutes from Geneva to Farnborough in a Phenom 300E, and about 6 hours 50 minutes from New York Teterboro to Farnborough in a Global 6000, which at roughly 3,105 nautical miles is a still-air figure. London clocks run an hour behind Paris and Geneva, so a short hop from the Continent lands close to the departure time on the wall.

2How much does a private jet to London cost?

From about £5,300 one way from Paris Le Bourget on a light jet, and £3,100 from Jersey on a turboprop. Geneva starts from £6,700 on a Phenom 300E, Nice from £10,550 on a midsize cabin and Madrid from £15,200, while Dubai and New York on a long-range jet run from about £84,800 to £85,600. Royal Ascot week, Wimbledon and the Farnborough Airshow weeks price above these figures.

3Which London airport should a private jet use?

It depends on where you are going. Northolt is nearest to the West End, London City and Biggin Hill to the City and Canary Wharf, Farnborough to the south-west and the M3 and M4 corridors, and Luton and Stansted to the north, with Stansted open round the clock. Heathrow and Gatwick take business jets but give them no night slots, and Southend is the late-evening option, open until about 01:30.

4When should I book a private jet to London?

Outside the peaks a day or two is usually enough. For Royal Ascot, the Wimbledon fortnight, the July airshow at Farnborough and the October art fair, allow five or six weeks. Parking, evening hours and helicopter space all tighten in the same days, and a late booking tends to pay more for an aircraft positioned from another country.

5Do I need a visa or an ETA to arrive in London by private jet?

Each passenger needs a valid passport, and EU, EEA and Swiss citizens cannot enter on an identity card. Most visitors who do not need a visa, including those from Europe and the USA, need an electronic travel authorisation before boarding, while British and Irish passport holders do not. The operator files a General Aviation Report with Border Force between 48 hours and two hours before departure, and permission to enter can be granted remotely before anyone leaves the aircraft.

6Can I bring my dog to London on a private jet?

Yes. On a charter the dog travels in the cabin, but only with an operator authorised to carry pets into Britain and through an airfield with a pet entry arrangement, such as Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted. The dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 full days old, a pet travel document from the country of departure and a tapeworm treatment given between 24 hours and five days before arrival.
