Private jet charter in La Rochelle
A light jet leaves the London fields and is over the Atlantic port of La Rochelle in a little more than an hour, which makes an oyster lunch on the quay a morning's work. The city is only part of what clients come for, because two islands, the cognac houses and a green wetland all lie within an hour or two of the runway, and Private Jets UK builds the charter around that whole programme. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. La Rochelle Île de Ré has a 2,213 m runway with an instrument approach on one end only, a compulsory handler on the paved apron and a customs notice of 48 hours for a flight from Britain. The airline traffic of the summer months decides how easy the stand is to secure, and the festival and boat show weeks decide the price.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in La Rochelle depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to La Rochelle?
1 hour 10 minutes from Biggin Hill in a light jet, 1 hour 45 minutes from Edinburgh, and one hour of clock difference to allow for on arrival, because France keeps Central European time. At 298 to 618 nautical miles from the British fields we use, La Rochelle sits in the comfortable middle of the French Atlantic coast: a light-jet sector from the south and the Midlands of England and Wales, a midsize one from the north and Scotland. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and you touch down at La Rochelle at about ten past nine local time. The airport lies on the north-western edge of the city, a short drive from the Old Port, typically a quarter of an hour. Handling is compulsory on the paved apron, so the agent meets the aircraft and walks the party through, and passport control is in the customs office in the arrival hall, next to the general aviation gate. A client who sets out from a London office can be eating on the harbour before one o'clock. The airlines' direct London services run only in the warmer months, so a private aircraft is the one way to choose the hour in any season.
Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route
– Up to four people with ordinary bags, take a light jet. A little over an hour in a CJ3+ is no hardship, and what you save against a midsize cabin pays for the car, the hotel and a boat to the islands;
– Five to eight people, or a week of luggage for two islands and a visit to a cognac house, we quote a midsize cabin alongside so that you see both figures. Cases of wine and spirits for the journey home take the place of a passenger faster than people expect;
– A large jet is not needed for the distance, and the field is not built around one. The runway is 2,213 m, the landing distance available is 1,746 m on runway 27 and 1,940 m on runway 09, and the taxiways take a wingspan of up to 36 m. That suits light and midsize jets comfortably, while a large cabin needs a performance check for the date and the fire cover published for it, and Bordeaux or Nantes is often the better field for it.

Prices for the private jet flights to La Rochelle
Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into La Rochelle Île de Ré. The Francofolies days in July, the Grand Pavois week in September and the summer weekends, when the airlines fill the paved apron, can price above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

The sector is long enough for the departure field to matter a little. Southampton and Exeter sit at the floor of the light-jet price, £5,300, Biggin Hill is £5,500 and Luton, in a Phenom 300E, £5,950. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest London field is small beside the cost of getting passengers to it, so choose the field that suits the party and not the mileage, and ask us for both a light and a midsize figure.
We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Onward from La Rochelle: when the aircraft wins and when the car does
Rochefort is about 34 km away and 32 minutes by road, so nobody charters a jet for it: you land at La Rochelle and drive. The onward flights worth paying for are the ones with a long road. Bordeaux is 184 km and almost two hours by road, against about 40 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12 over 87 nautical miles, and Nantes, 137 km and about an hour and three quarters by road, is about 35 minutes over 63. Biarritz is 170 nautical miles, about an hour in the same aircraft, and Jersey, 194 nautical miles, about 1 h 05 min, where the formalities change again because Jersey is outside Schengen. Inside Schengen the first landing carries the formalities and the hops after it are free of passport control. One legal point deserves a warning: a British-registered aircraft cannot simply carry passengers between two French airports, so a French domestic hop such as Nantes or Bordeaux is arranged with an EU operator or approved case by case, and we choose the operator accordingly.
Before you accept a coastal onward quote
– Who flies the leg. A flight between Britain and France is the ordinary case for a British operator, while a French domestic leg can need an EU operator or prior approval from the French authorities, and that is checked before the quote is written, not after it;
– Whether the legs are one booking. La Rochelle to Bordeaux to Biarritz over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of returning to base between stops.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Just fill in all the fields of the form with a note that you are interested in a specific model of the aircraft and get the final price. NB! - the figures are sent to you by email or messenger, please carefully fill in the contact details to get the calculation.
All our calculations are as transparent as possible for you. After receiving the request, we will prepare a beautiful offer - where the costs and the final price will be clearly described. The exact price is agreed in advance and is written in the contract, so you can be sure of the final cost.
Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for La Rochelle:
Light jets, the usual choice for four or five people
At a little over an hour in the air this is the natural class for a small party with ordinary luggage. Nothing here lacks the range, and the saving over a bigger cabin is better spent on the hotel, the car and the table at the harbour.
Midsize, for a larger party and a week of luggage
Two islands, a cognac visit and a week by the sea make a heavier trip than the seat count suggests. Bicycles are rented on the spot, but the cases of wine and spirits that come home with the party fill the hold quickly.
Super-midsize and large
For a delegation, a group travelling as one party, or a trip that carries on to Paris or the south. The airport can take these, but check the landing distance and the fire cover for the date, and the parking, because large cabins go to the paved apron by prior permission.
Turboprops
The right aircraft for the hops along the coast: Nantes and Bordeaux are well under an hour in the air, Biarritz about an hour, and the saving over a jet on those distances is large.
Helicopters
Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: the islands, the oyster basins, a loop over Fort Boyard or a transfer to a cognac estate. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

This is a small part of what is available. La Rochelle is a regional airport without a large based business fleet, so a quote may name Bordeaux, Nantes or Paris as the positioning point for the aircraft. That is normal for a field of this kind, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in La Rochelle
Seven airports are worth discussing for a trip to the Charente coast. Which one is right depends on where the programme is and on the customs position of the flight, not on the aircraft.
| Airport | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| La Rochelle Île de Ré LRH / LFBH |
The answer for nearly every trip, on the north-western edge of the city. Runway 09/27 is 2,213 m by 45 m, runway 27 has a Category I ILS and runway 09 has no ILS, and the tower works in the summer schedule from 07:30 to 22:30 local time and in the winter schedule from 07:30 to 20:30. Fire cover is category 5 during tower hours, with category 7 set out by NOTAM. Handling by Aviapartner is mandatory on the paved apron, and a flight from outside Schengen needs a customs notice of 48 hours. Scheduled airlines use the same field, so the stand needs a permission request. Choose it for the city, the islands, Rochefort and almost every programme on this coast |
| Rochefort Charente-Maritime RCO / LFDN |
The small field about 30 km south-east of La Rochelle and about 12 minutes by car from Rochefort. Runway 12/30 is 2,280 m by 45 m, the AIP lists no instrument approach, the radio service is a weekday daytime AFIS, fire cover is category 1 and fuel is self-service by card. The AIP names no customs or border service, so a flight from Britain should not make its first landing here. Choose it for a light aircraft that has cleared the border elsewhere and wants the Hermione and the Arsenal |
| Cognac Châteaubernard CNG / LFBG |
A French air force base, 2.8 km south of Cognac, with a runway of 2,422 m. It is a restricted-use aerodrome: a civil aircraft needs the permission of the base commander with five working days' notice, the AIP lists no customs service, and the field is closed at weekends. It is not a realistic arrival for a charter. Land at La Rochelle or Angoulême and drive to the houses |
| Angoulême Brie Champniers ANG / LFBU |
The civil field nearest to Cognac, 15 km north-east of Angoulême. Runway 10/28 is 1,860 m by 45 m with an ILS on runway 28, the radio service is a weekday daytime AFIS, and fire cover is category 4 in those hours. Customs is on request with 48 hours' notice, and handling is compulsory for aircraft of 3 tonnes or more. Choose it for a light or midsize jet when the programme is the cognac houses and the valley of the Charente, and expect a drive of well under an hour to Cognac |
| Poitiers Biard PIS / LFBI |
The inland alternative, about 140 km and an hour and a half by road from La Rochelle. Runway 03/21 is 2,350 m by 45 m, the tower runs round the clock from Monday morning to Saturday evening, fire cover is category 7 by NOTAM and the handler is SEALAPB, which is also the aerodrome administration. Customs and immigration need 48 hours' notice, and a request that does not comply is refused. There is no hangar for visiting aircraft. Choose it when the programme is inland, not for the coast |
| Nantes Atlantique NTE / LFRS |
The big-airport alternative to the north, 137 km and about an hour and three quarters by road from La Rochelle. A single runway 03/21 of 2,853 m by 45 m, police and immigration round the clock, customs by random availability with two hours' notice, and handling by Aviapartner, Alyzia or Air France. In summer the airport is slot-coordinated through COHOR for IFR movements, and aircraft may not land or leave their stand between midnight and 06:00 local time. Choose it when Nantes or the Vendée coast is the real destination |
| Bordeaux Mérignac BOD / LFBD |
The large-cabin alternative to the south, 184 km and almost two hours by road from La Rochelle. The airport is open round the clock, with a 3,100 m runway with a Category III ILS and a second runway of 2,145 m. The AviaVIP business aviation terminal is staffed from 07:00 to 21:00 local time and works at any hour by arrangement, with border control on request, VIP and crew lounges and a hangar for aircraft up to 17 m in wingspan. Choose it for a large cabin, a night arrival or a programme that combines the Charente coast with the Bordeaux vineyards |
Four things to settle before a La Rochelle landing:
The handler and the apron
Handling on the paved Foxtrot apron is compulsory and is done by Aviapartner, with a permission request made 48 hours ahead, because for safety and security reasons nobody parks there unannounced. The airport says plainly that the paved apron is limited and given first to scheduled commercial flights, which is why a summer Saturday takes more planning than a spring Tuesday. A grass apron serves light general aviation up to 5.7 tonnes, and business jets use the paved one. For hangar space for a visiting aircraft the AIP points to the airport operator.
Hours, fuel and fire cover
The French AIP prints times in UTC, so we convert them: the tower runs from 07:30 to 22:30 local time in the summer schedule and from 07:30 to 20:30 in the winter schedule. Jet A1 comes by bowser in set hours, in summer from 07:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 19:30 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 19:30 at weekends and on public holidays, in winter from 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:30, and a request outside those hours is charged at a fixed fee. Fire cover is category 5 during tower hours and category 7 by NOTAM. The AIP shows no slot coordination for La Rochelle, and the runway closes in snow because the field has no snow clearing or de-icing.
Border and passport
France is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border at La Rochelle. Customs needs a notice of at least 48 hours, sent by email with the crew and passenger details including passport numbers, and passport control is in the customs office in the arrival hall next to the general aviation gate. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU border system.
Car and the coast
Give us the terminal as well as the flight, so the driver waits where you come out. The Old Port is a short drive away, Saint-Martin-de-Ré on the Île de Ré is about 22 km and 24 minutes away when the road is clear, and the road to the bridge fills on summer weekends. The last section of this page lists the road times to the places clients ask about most.

Border, passport and the customs booking
The first landing in the Schengen area is where the formalities happen. At La Rochelle they work through an appointment and not a permanent desk: the French AIP asks for notice of at least 48 hours for any flight from outside Schengen, by email to the La Rochelle customs unit and to the Bordeaux customs operations centre, with the aircraft, the crew and the passengers listed. The notice does not publish different times for weekends, but a Friday evening arrival before a bank holiday is the case to avoid, and a Tuesday morning is the easiest. We send the details with the handler's booking and keep the customs email in the same thread. A passenger with reduced mobility also needs 48 hours' notice for assistance. For the return, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure.

From the apron to the Old Port and the islands
La Rochelle was a Protestant stronghold that ran itself as a reformed republic, and it paid for it: Richelieu blockaded the city for fourteen months in the seventeenth century, until it surrendered and lost its mayor and its privileges. What remains is a working harbour town of about 80,000 people, and the Old Port is its centre. Three medieval towers stand at the harbour mouth. The Saint-Nicolas and Chaîne towers face each other across the channel as the gateway to the basin, and the Lantern Tower, partly twelfth century and partly fifteenth, is described as the oldest lighthouse on the Atlantic coast and later served as a naval prison, with more than 600 graffiti cut into its walls by prisoners over three centuries. All three can be climbed, and the views take in the city, the harbour and the islands.
Two more places repay an afternoon. The Aquarium on Quai Louis Prunier, a short walk from the Old Port, describes itself as one of the largest private aquariums in Europe, with about 600 species in areas that run from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean to sharks, jellyfish and a tropical forest, and a care centre for sea turtles; allow about two hours. Les Minimes, to the south-west, is the other half of the port. Counting the Old Port and a third basin as well, La Rochelle has more than 5,100 berths, and the trade press calls it the largest marina on the European Atlantic coast, which is why the town is a base for sailors as much as for tourists.
The weather is part of the case for flying here. La Rochelle averages about 2,300 hours of sunshine a year, with July the brightest month at about 297 hours, and about 750 mm of rain. The food comes from the water around it. The Marennes-Oléron basin farms the fine de claire oyster, usually eaten raw with lemon or shallot, mussels grown on stakes go into the creamy mouclade, and the fish markets of La Rochelle land sole in season. Pineau des Charentes, a fortified wine, is the aperitif and cognac the digestif, and Île de Ré adds its hand-raked fleur de sel and a new potato that arrives from late April and should be eaten within days. A long lunch on the harbour is a respectable way to spend the hour before departure.

Île de Ré, Oléron and Fort Boyard
The Île de Ré is about 30 km long and 5 km wide, and a bridge of 2.9 km joins it to the mainland. The bridge carries a toll that is higher in summer. Of the island's ten villages, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is the main port, fortified by Vauban in the seventeenth century and listed by UNESCO among his fortifications, with a marina inside the citadel. Ars-en-Ré is known for its black and white bell tower and its market, and La Flotte and Ars are both ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Les Portes-en-Ré borders the nature reserve of Lilleau des Niges, and at the western tip the Phare des Baleines is 57 m high, with 257 steps and a view of the open ocean, the marshes and, on a clear day, the mainland.
The island is salt, oysters and bicycles. The salt marshes are still worked, around Loix, where there is an eco-museum of the marsh, and around Ars, where most of them lie, and the fleur de sel is raked by hand from the surface of the pans in fine weather. The island's donkeys, which wear trousers, were once used on the marshes. There are about 100 km of cycle paths, bicycles are rented in the villages, and in July and August a boat service called Vélo-Mouettes carries bicycles.
Oléron is the larger and the quieter island, the second largest of metropolitan France after Corsica, with 174 sq km. Its bridge, 2,862 m long, is toll-free, and Le Château-d'Oléron is about 71 km and a little over an hour from La Rochelle. The oyster basins of Marennes-Oléron, one of the main oyster-farming areas in Europe, lie between the island and the mainland, and the island has more than 100 km of cycle paths, mostly away from traffic. Boat trips link Boyardville and Saint-Denis with La Rochelle.
Fort Boyard stands in the strait between Aix and Oléron: a stadium-shaped fort 68 m long, with walls about 20 m high, begun under Napoleon and finished in the middle of the nineteenth century to close a gap in the defences that protected the arsenal at Rochefort. Longer-range guns made it unnecessary, it served briefly as a military prison and it was abandoned, and for decades it has been the set of the television game show of the same name. It belongs to the Charente-Maritime département. Boat trips from the La Rochelle harbour reach it, a helicopter flight from the airport passes over it, and a landing on it is a matter for its owner, which we do not promise.
Rochefort, the Marais Poitevin and the cognac houses
Rochefort is about 30 km to the south-east, and it exists because Colbert chose it as a naval base in the seventeenth century. The arsenal built ships there until it closed in the twentieth century, and the Corderie Royale, the rope factory, is over 370 m long and was for centuries the longest manufacturing building in the world. The Hermione, a replica of the frigate that carried Lafayette to America, was built in the town over seventeen years, is 65 m long and crossed the Atlantic to Yorktown and the American east coast; whether she is in port or at sea on a given date is a question we ask before a client plans the day. The Rochefort-Martrou transporter bridge, built at the turn of the twentieth century, is the only one left in France and one of eight in service worldwide.
North of La Rochelle the Marais Poitevin is the second largest wetland in France after the Camargue, about 970 sq km of fields, drained marsh and, in the wet east, a network of canals so often covered in duckweed that the area is called the Venise Verte. People see it from a barque, a flat-bottomed boat hired at the landing stages, and Coulon, about 54 km and under an hour from the city, is the usual base. It is a half day, and it is a quiet one.
The cognac houses are the longest of the three excursions. Hennessy, Martell, Otard, Camus and Rémy Martin all stand in or around Cognac, on the Charente, and Courvoisier is at Jarnac, about 15 km to the east. The houses have visitor centres; the visits run from a tasting of the younger blends to blending your own XO, and reservations are highly recommended, ideally weeks ahead, because groups are often capped at 10 to 20 people and demand peaks from June to August. Hennessy and Rémy Martin take bookings online, and Baron Otard shows visitors round the Château de Cognac beside the river. Cognac is about 104 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from La Rochelle, so a chauffeured day is realistic, and the charter should be timed so that the first tasting is not at eight in the morning. The town's own airfield is an air force base and not open to charters, so the options are the car from La Rochelle or a landing at Angoulême.
Flying to La Rochelle with a dog or a cat
For a pet the paperwork is the part of a trip to the Charente that needs planning, and the flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of just over an hour most simply sleep. The date on the health certificate is the detail that goes wrong, because the certificate is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU.

What an EU country such as France asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:
- An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
- A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
- An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
- No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
- For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.
What catches owners out on the La Rochelle run
– France does not ask for tapeworm treatment on the way in, only Britain asks for it on the way home, so it is a vet appointment you book in La Rochelle or on the island where you are staying. Count back from the departure time, because the window is 24 to 120 hours and a flight that moves by a day can move the window out of reach;
– The order of the chip and the vaccine matters. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be refused entry, so the certificate is checked line by line before the flight, not at the terminal;
– A week by the sea with a dog is an ordinary booking, but the rules for dogs on beaches, on boats and in restaurants differ from one village to the next. Ask the hotel and the boat company about the animal separately, and tell us if a boat trip to Fort Boyard or a day on the islands is planned, so that we check the whole programme.
Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.
The La Rochelle calendar: a sailing port with two big events
La Rochelle has a notably sunny Atlantic climate and no real off-season for the coast, but two events change the picture. The Francofolies music festival fills the city for a few days in July, and the Grand Pavois boat show fills the Minimes marina for six days in late September. The other months matter much less to the price than those two events do.
Why the festival and boat show weeks cost more
The aircraft are rarely the problem. The European light and midsize fleet is large and La Rochelle is within easy reach of it. What gets tight is everything around the jet: the hotel rooms in the city and on the islands, the cars, the customs notice, which has to be sent at least 48 hours ahead, and the stand on the paved apron, which the airport gives first to scheduled flights. A booking made two weeks before the Grand Pavois can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Bordeaux, Nantes or Paris, and that costs more. The same booking made six or eight weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks a charter to La Rochelle can usually be arranged in a day or two, provided the customs notice fits.
Ways to bring the La Rochelle price down
- Choose the day and the season. Stands on the paved apron go first to scheduled flights, which are busiest on summer weekends, so a Tuesday in May is the cheapest and the simplest, and a Saturday in August the opposite;
- Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Bordeaux, Nantes or Paris takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
- Pick the cabin for the people, not the mileage. A light jet costs £5,500 from Biggin Hill and £5,300 from Southampton or Exeter, and from Luton the step up from a Phenom at £5,950 to a Citation XLS+ adds £1,350, so ask for both figures.
Types of flights
La Rochelle produces a different mix from the Alpine or the Italian destinations we cover, because it is a port with a coast, two islands and a hinterland of vineyards and marshes behind it.
- Island and cycling weekends on the Île de Ré and Oléron, with the bridge, the salt marshes and a table at the quay;
- Cognac days, from a tasting at one of the large houses to a private blending session, usually booked weeks ahead;
- Sailing and boating, from the Grand Pavois week to time on the water out of Les Minimes and along the Atlantic coast;
- Gastronomy weekends built around oysters, mussels, Pineau and a good hotel, usually from the south of England;
- Concert and festival trips in July for the Francofolies;
- Family holidays in July and August, typically with a villa on the Île de Ré and a day trip to Fort Boyard or the Marais Poitevin.
The day trip is the one to look at closely. Land at about nine, leave at five in the afternoon local time and you are back on the British side by about five in the evening, UK time, with eight hours on the ground in between. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. We quote it both ways, so the difference is visible.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. La Rochelle has no event that creates them every week, so they come from the weekly rhythm of a holiday coast, and it helps to know what produces them.
Where La Rochelle empty legs come from
– Summer weekends. Aircraft that bring a family on the Friday and leave empty on the Sunday, or that arrive empty to collect a party on the Sunday, put a leg on the market towards Britain or Paris;
– Festival and boat show weeks. The Francofolies and the Grand Pavois produce one-way arrivals followed by a repositioning flight home, and an outbound leg on the morning after the last day is the one most often offered;
– Coastal loops. Operators moving aircraft between La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Nantes and Biarritz put short hops on the market, and those hops can be cheap.
Because the corridor to the French Atlantic is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a La Rochelle match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter
In La Rochelle a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The Old Port is a short drive from the airport, and the places where rotary flight changes the journey are the islands, the oyster basins, Fort Boyard and the cognac estates. The airport has helicopter stands, and the AIP asks for prior permission and Aviapartner handling for any helicopter that is not based there. A five-seat Écureuil flies sightseeing flights from the airport, about an hour over the Île de Ré, Oléron and Fort Boyard, and larger machines are positioned from elsewhere, with the quote saying from where.
about 11 nm by air, a circuit of the strait for a party that cannot land on the fortabout 14 minutes
about 20 nm by air, against about half an hour on the road, for a party that wants the Hermione and a connectionabout 18 minutes
about 50 nm by air, against an hour and a quarter by road, for a party that wants a tasting and an afternoon back at the harbourabout 34 minutes
Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a hotel lawn, an estate or a field on the islands before the quote is written, not after it. Fort Boyard has a helipad of its own, but the fort belongs to the Charente-Maritime département, and a landing is for its owner to allow;
– Weather sets the schedule. Atlantic wind, sea fog and low cloud can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;
– A flight to the cognac estates needs a landing site at the other end. Tell us the house you want to visit when you ask for the quote, and book the helicopter together with the jet.
The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for scenic and coastal work, the wider H130 for hotel transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

La Rochelle charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.
DAY TRIP · OUT AND BACK
A harbour lunch and home for dinner
Biggin Hill - La Rochelle and return, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 10 min each way · 4 pax
Wheels up at seven, on the ground at about ten past nine local time, a walk round the Old Port, lunch on the quay and a drive to Saint-Martin-de-Ré before the aircraft left again in the late afternoon. The aircraft and crew waited on the apron rather than going home, which is a real line in the quote and still comes in below two separate one-way charters. The customs notice went in with the handler's booking at least two days ahead, and a weekday was chosen because of it.
ISLAND WEEKEND · BICYCLES AND OYSTERS
Four adults and a villa on the Île de Ré
Southampton - La Rochelle, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 05 min · 4 pax
Light luggage, a car waiting at the paved apron and the bridge crossed in the afternoon. We moved the arrival to a Thursday so that it fell before the weekend traffic, booked the bicycles with the villa and set the return for Monday morning, which kept the aircraft out of the Sunday evening rush of departures.
COGNAC DAY · A CHAUFFEURED RUN
Six guests and three houses
London Luton - La Rochelle, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 10 min · 6 pax
The houses were booked first, because the visits fill weeks ahead, and the flight was fitted around them. The party landed at La Rochelle rather than at a field nearer to Cognac, drove for an hour and a quarter with a driver who knew the roads, and flew home in the evening with two cases of bottles, which is why the quote was for a midsize cabin and not a light jet.
BOAT SHOW WEEK · THE ROOMS WENT FIRST
Eight guests at the Grand Pavois
London City - La Rochelle, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 10 min · 8 pax
The jet was easy and the rest was not. The hotel rooms and the cars were the first things to go in boat show week, so we confirmed them before the aircraft, held the customs notice for the arrival day and the stand request for the paved apron, and positioned the crew from Paris, which added a little to the price and removed any risk of a late start.
COASTAL WEEK · A DOG ON BOARD
Four adults and a spaniel for a September week
Exeter - La Rochelle, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 05 min · 4 pax + dog
The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment near the hotel for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the hotel took the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages rather than three.
EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING NORTH
A jet already going your way
La Rochelle - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 10 min · 3 pax
The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the London fields.
Frequently asked questions about flying to La Rochelle
1How long is a private jet flight from London to La Rochelle?
About 1 hour 10 minutes from London City, Biggin Hill or Luton in a light jet or a Phenom, and 5 minutes less from Southampton or Exeter, covering roughly 319 to 357 nautical miles from the London fields. From Birmingham or Manchester allow about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 1 hour 45 minutes. France is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands at about ten past nine local time.
2How much does a private jet to La Rochelle cost?
From about £5,300 one way on a light jet out of Southampton or Exeter, £5,500 from Biggin Hill, and £5,950 in a Phenom from Luton. A midsize cabin from Manchester runs about £8,650 and from Scotland about £11,050. The Francofolies days in July, the Grand Pavois week in September and summer weekends can price above these figures.
3Which airport should a private jet use for La Rochelle?
La Rochelle Île de Ré (LRH / LFBH) for nearly every trip. It has a 2,213 m runway with an ILS on runway 27, compulsory handling by Aviapartner on the paved apron and a customs notice of 48 hours for flights from outside Schengen. Rochefort has no customs service listed, the air base at Cognac is closed to charters, and Angoulême is the civil field for the cognac houses. Bordeaux suits large cabins and night arrivals, and Nantes is the alternative to the north.
4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for La Rochelle?
Britain is outside Schengen and France is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival at La Rochelle, in the customs office in the arrival hall. Customs for flights from outside Schengen needs a notice of at least 48 hours, with passport details for the crew and passengers. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. We file the notice and the aircraft paperwork.
5Can I visit the Île de Ré, Rochefort and the cognac houses on one trip?
Yes, by car and helicopter from La Rochelle. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is about 22 km, Rochefort about 34 km and Cognac about 104 km and 1 hour 15 minutes by road, and a helicopter reaches Cognac in about 34 minutes if a landing site is agreed first. Bordeaux and Nantes are 87 and 63 nautical miles away, about 40 minutes and 35 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12. A French domestic hop is flown by an EU operator or approved case by case, so we choose the aircraft for the leg.
6Can I take my dog to La Rochelle on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and an EU country such as France asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. France does not ask for a tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
