Private jet charter in Kittila

Kittilä lies about 1,248 nautical miles north-east of London, well inside the Arctic Circle, and a private jet covers the distance in a little over three hours - short enough that a party leaving a London field at eight in the morning is on the ground by early afternoon and on the fell for the last of the light. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around the version of that day you want. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Kittilä has one 2,500 m runway, no hangar for visiting aircraft and a winter calendar that fills the apron, so the decisions that matter are the date, the handler and the cabin size.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Kittilä depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Kittilä?

Allow between about two and three-quarter hours and three and a half hours, depending on where in Britain you start, and put your watch two hours forward on landing: Finland keeps Eastern European time and changes its clocks on the same dates as Britain. The sectors in the table run from 1,092 to 1,330 nautical miles, which is long for a light jet but well within the range of the Phenom 300E and everything larger. Most winter parties choose a Phenom or a midsize cabin because of the skis and the coats, and the table shows the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London field at eight in the morning and, with a flight of just over three hours and the two-hour clock change, you land at Kittilä a little after one in the afternoon local time. The airport stands 4 km north of Kittilä village and about 15 km from the centre of Levi, roughly a quarter of an hour by car. Add the drive to the British field and the processing at both ends and a journey from central London to a chalet door in Levi comes to roughly five and a half hours. A scheduled itinerary usually means Helsinki and a change, and takes most of a day.

Light jet or midsize on a sector of over three hours

– Two or three people with ordinary bags can sit in a Phenom 300E for the whole sector, and the saving against a midsize cabin is real. We quote a midsize one beside it all the same, because the westbound return can run against the wind and three hours is a long time in a small cabin;

– A family of four or five with ski bags, boots, helmets and bulky winter coats is where the light cabin runs out of hold space. In Lapland the luggage, and not the seats, tends to decide the aircraft, so give us the bag count with the passenger count;

– A heavy jet is for a large party moving in one aircraft, for a company group that carries on to Helsinki or Stockholm, or for a client who wants a stand-up cabin all the way. Before we quote one we check the rescue category and the stand with the airport, as described below.

Private jet flights from Kittilä

A Kittilä trip is usually a round trip to Britain or Central Europe, but the same aircraft can also work the north. Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Enontekiö are turboprop hops inside Lapland, Tromsø is across the Norwegian border, and Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen sit a morning away. Skiers from Germany and Switzerland are a single flight. Typical one-way prices:

Lapland from the air: when a turboprop beats the road

Rovaniemi is only 75 nautical miles from Kittilä, about 40 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, while the road from Rovaniemi to Levi is 170 km and the drive from Rovaniemi to Ylläs takes about two hours. Enontekiö, near Hetta, is 53 nautical miles away and about 35 minutes by turboprop, against roughly 150 km by road. Ivalo, the airport for Saariselkä and Inari, is 82 nautical miles and about 40 minutes. These are the sectors that turn a week with two bases, say Levi and the far north, into a single arrangement with one aircraft and one crew that stay with you. The sectors that look short on the map can also be slow in practice, because winter weather can close the small fields in the north, and we plan each northern hop with an alternative.

Before you accept a northern onward quote

– Check the field at the far end. Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Enontekiö are all listed as border crossing airports in the Finnish aeronautical information, but their handling and customs hours may differ from Kittilä's, and a late arrival needs the handler's agreement before the quote is final;

– Check the runway for the aircraft in the quote. Enontekiö is a small airport with winter charter traffic, and a heavy jet that suits Kittilä may not be what the smaller field wants;

– Check whether the legs are one booking. A week across Levi, Ivalo and Tromsø costs less as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew remain with you instead of flying back to base between stops.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Kittilä:

Light jets, for a small party and light bags

Over three hours is a long sit in a light cabin, and skis are awkward to load, so these suit two or three people with a modest amount of luggage. The saving against a larger jet is real when the party is small, and the Phenom 300E has the range to make the sector comfortably.

Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h

Midsize, for the family with ski bags

Four to eight people with boots, helmets, snowsuits and a pushchair is what most winter bookings look like, and it is the class where the cabin and the hold stop being a compromise. A fuel stop is not needed for this sector.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a group of ten or more, for a company party travelling as one, and for owners who want the full cabin and the baggage space on the long winter sector. Large aircraft need the rescue category and stand checked with the airport in advance.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The aircraft for Lapland itself: Rovaniemi is about 40 minutes in the air, Enontekiö and Ivalo about the same, and on distances like these a turboprop saves a great deal against a jet.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch to a fell-side chalet, an aurora flight over the lakes or a transfer between Levi and Ylläs. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote is written.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Kittilä sits at the far northern end of the European fleet, so an aircraft is more often found in Helsinki, Stockholm or Oslo than on the apron next door, and the cost of bringing it north is a visible part of every quote. That is why the date you choose and the aircraft base matter more here than the model.

Business aviation airports in Kittilä

One airport does the work for Levi and Ylläs. The others on this list matter as a back-up, for a trip that is really to another part of Lapland, or because a quote names them and you should know why.

Airport What it gives you
Kittilä
KTT / EFKT
The answer for Levi, Ylläs and almost every jet trip to western Lapland. It lies 4 km north of Kittilä village at an elevation of 645 feet and has a single asphalt runway, 16/34, of 2,500 by 45 metres, with an ILS approach to runway 34 and approach lighting at both ends. The aeronautical information lists 15 aircraft stands, a handling service from two companies, Jet A-1 fuel and de-icing, and it lists no hangar space for visiting aircraft. Levi is about 15 km away and Ylläs about 39 km. It also has a regular winter timetable, so the same apron is shared with scheduled and charter airliners
Rovaniemi
RVN / EFRO
The next airport south, 75 nautical miles from Kittilä, with a runway of about 3,000 metres and the Santa Claus Village within 2 to 3 km of the terminal. The road from Rovaniemi to Levi is 170 km, and to Ylläs the drive takes about two hours. It makes sense for a party that wants the Santa visit and the Arctic Circle, or when Kittilä is closed by weather or full, but for Levi itself it adds a long drive in the dark
Ivalo
IVL / EFIV
The airport of the far north, 82 nautical miles from Kittilä, with an asphalt runway of 2,499 metres and an ILS. It lies 11 km south-west of Ivalo and about 25 km north of Saariselkä. It earns a place here when the trip is to Inari or Saariselkä, or when a client wants to start in Levi and finish in the north with the same aircraft
Enontekiö
ENF / EFET
A small airport 9 km from Hetta, 53 nautical miles from Kittilä and about 150 km by road. Its traffic is mainly winter charters for the fell villages of the north-west. It suits light and midsize jets better than heavy ones, and it is a plan B for a Hetta or Pallas stay rather than a replacement for Kittilä
Helsinki-Vantaa
HEL / EFHK
The gateway for connections and the first plan B, 461 nautical miles from Kittilä, about 1 h 25 min in a midsize jet. Finavia runs a business aviation terminal there, and for a dog or cat arriving from Britain it is the airport the Finnish authority lists for the animal check, which is why a pet trip often lands there first. Customs also work there for a party that wants to clear the formalities in the capital and fly north as a domestic leg

Four points settle most Kittilä arrivals:

Choose the handler

The aeronautical information lists two handling companies at Kittilä, Airpro Oy and ScandiAvia Oy, available during the airport's operating hours and on 24 hours' notice outside them. Jet A-1 is the only fuel, uplifted during the hours of air traffic services, and there is no cargo handling. The airport has a restaurant, taxis and buses, but no bank or tourist office. We name the handler and the terminal in writing before you pay, and tell the car company the handler as well as the flight.

Slots, stands and the missing hangar

Slot requests go to the airport's slot office, which publishes an e-mail address and an urgent telephone number. The airport lists 15 stands. There is no hangar space for visiting aircraft, so a jet that stays for several days stands outside at winter temperatures, and for a long stay we sometimes plan the aircraft to leave and return for the pick-up. A visiting operator must also confirm the rescue and fire-fighting category in advance for its aircraft.

Border and passport

Finland is in Schengen and the EU, and Britain is not, so you pass passport control and customs on arrival. Kittilä is one of the airports on the Finnish list of border crossing points, with customs and immigration during the airport's operating hours on four hours' notice. The pilot sends the flight plan and passenger identity details to the border guard, and the General Declaration is accepted as the clearance document. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for at least three months beyond the day you leave.

Cold, snow and the car

Local guides give typical winter ranges of minus 10 to minus 25 degrees Celsius in January and February, and Pokka, in the Kittilä municipality, holds the Finnish record of minus 51.5. De-icing is available during operating hours and on 24 hours' notice outside them, so we book it with the handler at the same time as the arrival. Runway clearance, sand and de-icing chemicals are in the airport's winter plan, and heavy snow can still slow the day. Book the transfer for the handler's door and give the driver the flight number.

business aviation

Border, passport and the way home

Because Finland is inside Schengen, the first landing is where the formalities happen, and everything after that, a hop to Rovaniemi or a drive to Ylläs, is free of border control. A first landing at Kittilä is possible, because the airport is on the Finnish border crossing list, and that saves a stop for passengers; it is for animals that the picture changes, as the pets section below explains. A foreign operator's commercial charter that carries passengers in and out of Finland needs permission from the Finnish transport agency, requested at least 48 hours ahead and not counting weekends and public holidays, while a non-commercial private flight needs no such permission, only the flight plan and passenger details. We check which category your booking falls into when we confirm the operator. The way home runs the other way. Britain treats the aircraft as arriving from abroad, so a General Aviation Report is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and passengers pass the border at the British airfield. Visitors who need no visa for Britain still need an Electronic Travel Authorisation unless they are British or Irish citizens. You declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty, since the usual EU limits on meat and milk products apply to what you carry into Finland.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

From the apron to the fells

Kittilä is the third-largest municipality in Finland by area, yet most passengers who land here are heading for one of two fells. Levi, in the village of Sirkka, is a fell of 531 metres with 43 pistes and 27 lifts, and a ski season that often runs from October to mid-May. Ylläs, across the municipal boundary in Kolari, is a larger fell of 719 metres with 61 slopes, 29 lifts and 330 km of cross-country trails, split between the villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. The airport serves both, and a party that splits its week between them can do so with a single aircraft and a single handler.

about 15 km from the airport by road, with airport buses, taxis and private minibuses all running
about 15 minutes by car
Kittilä to Ylläs

typically 30 minutes by car
Kittilä to a glass igloo near Levi
Levin Iglut stands on the slope of Utsuvaara, about 10 km from Levi and open from late August to the end of April
17 km from the airport
Rovaniemi to Ylläs by road
Levi is 170 km from Rovaniemi, and the Ylläs resort quotes about two hours by car to its villages

Flying to Kittilä with a dog or a cat

For a pet the paperwork is the part of a Lapland trip that needs planning. The flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and a dog that has been out in the snow all day sleeps on the way home. Finland adds a fixed airport for the animal check, and the dates on the certificate need the same care.

private flight with animals

What Finland, as an EU country, asks for:

  • An ISO microchip (standard 11784, FDX-B or HDX) that can be read with a standard scanner, fitted before the rabies vaccination;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with the 21-day wait observed after the first vaccination and the vaccination still valid on the day of entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate issued by an official veterinarian, valid for ten days for entry to the EU and for the return to Britain as stated on the certificate, together with the owner's declaration that the journey is not commercial. A British pet passport is not accepted for entry to the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller. The Finnish Food Authority lists Helsinki-Vantaa as the only airport where a pet arriving from outside the EU can be presented to customs, and Kittilä is not on that list, so we confirm in writing that the rule applies to your private flight, plan the first landing at Helsinki, clear the animal there, and fly on to Kittilä as a domestic leg;
  • A tapeworm treatment for dogs, given by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the dog arrives in Finland and recorded on the certificate. Cats do not need it. A dog flying directly home from Finland to Britain needs no further treatment, which is required only if it has been in another country or the routing includes one, and we confirm that in writing.

What catches owners out on a Lapland trip

– The Helsinki stop is not optional for the animal. It adds a leg and a landing to the quote, and about 1 h 25 min of flying in a midsize jet on to Kittilä, but without it the entry-point rule may not be met. We price the two legs as one trip and confirm the entry point with the handler in writing;

– The tapeworm treatment is a vet appointment you book at home before the flight out. Count back from the arrival in Finland, because the window is 24 to 120 hours and a clinic can be full in the ski season, so ask for the appointment early. The direct flight home needs none;

– Cold is the other risk. A short-coated dog does not belong outdoors at minus 25, and boots, a coat and a plan for the pavement from the aircraft door to the car are worth packing. Keep the animal in the cabin until the car is at the steps.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the flight home, we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

The Kittilä calendar: from the ruska to the midnight sun

Kittilä has no off-season in the way a Mediterranean island has. The year is a sequence of light and dark, from the long white nights of summer to the weeks in December when the sun does not clear the horizon. Knowing which one you want matters more than choosing an aircraft, because the winter weeks are the only ones in which the airport is crowded.

Late May to mid-July
The midnight sun: for about 45 days the sun does not set, and the lakes open for hiking, cycling and canoeing. Mosquitoes peak from mid-June to late July. A summer week is a quiet one for the airport, with plenty of aircraft and no ice on the wings
September
Ruska, the autumn colour, moves down from the north and reaches Levi in the middle of the month. Running and music events fill Levi in September, and the aurora season has begun, because the nights are dark again from the end of August. The quiet shoulder season, and good value
October
First natural snow can come in the middle of the month, and the winter season opens in Levi in early October on stored snow. The quiet weeks before the season proper, with the cold still mild by Lapland standards
Mid-November
The Alpine World Cup comes to Levi for its slalom weekend, on the Levi Black course, which drops 180 metres and has the lowest finish elevation on the women's circuit. Racers, teams and guests fill the village, a Christmas market opens in November and runs into January, and snow cover is usually reliable by then. The first real test for the apron
December
Kaamos: from roughly the middle of December to the first days of January the sun stays below the horizon and the days are a blue twilight. The festive week is the peak of the year, with Christmas markets, candlelit ski tracks and temperatures of minus 10 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. Husky, reindeer and Santa bookings can sell out months ahead
January to February
The coldest and darkest weeks, with the deepest snow, long dark nights for the aurora and fewer crowds than December. The Finnish school holiday weeks, 8 and 10, are busy. For the aircraft this is the hardest part of the year: de-icing, a cold-soaked apron and a short working day
March
The best value for skiing, the light has come back, and March is often named the best month for the aurora. The ski season runs on into April, and the days are long enough for a late arrival
April to early May
April still has spring skiing and long days. Early May is the thaw, the least scenic stretch of the year, and the Levi ski season usually closes in the first half of May. Easy weeks for the apron and for the diary

When Kittilä does get tight

The aircraft are rarely the scarce item here. What runs out is the apron, the de-icing slot and the chalet. The busiest weeks are the festive week from Christmas to the New Year, the Finnish school holiday weeks in February and March, and the Levi World Cup weekend in November. In those weeks the airport has 15 stands, no hangar, and a timetable full of seasonal airliners, so we ask for the slot and the stand before the aircraft is confirmed. Rovaniemi, 75 nautical miles away, is the first alternative for a party that cannot get a stand at Kittilä, but the drive from Rovaniemi to Levi is about 170 km. The one condition that can change a plan on any date is winter weather, which is why we allow time for de-icing and keep an alternative airfield in mind.

Ways to bring the Kittilä price down

  • Shift the dates if the diary allows. A midweek flight in January, or a week in March after the school holidays, costs less than the week between Christmas and the New Year, and the snow is as good;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Helsinki, Stockholm or Oslo costs less to bring north than one flown out from Britain, and on a sector of this length the positioning is a visible slice of the invoice;
  • Do not pay for waiting. A jet that stays at Kittilä for a week is parked outside with no hangar, and the standing time is charged. For a stay of more than a couple of days, ask for a quote for a drop-off and a separate pick-up as well, and compare;
  • Take the light jet only when the party and the bags are small. Two people with cabin bags save real money in a Phenom; five people with ski bags do not, and the quote that looks cheap on paper is often the one that changes.

Types of flights

Kittilä produces a mix of its own, because the same runway serves a ski week, an aurora weekend and a corporate incentive.

  • Family ski weeks at Levi or Ylläs, usually four to eight people, with the Christmas and New Year week the most requested;
  • Aurora weekends, often for couples who stay in a glass igloo or a cabin and want to see the lights between the autumn and March;
  • World Cup weekends in Levi in November, with a fixed date, a small group and a request for a car at the aircraft door;
  • Husky, reindeer and snowmobile trips as part of a corporate incentive, or a winter break for a company team;
  • Arctic loops that put Kittilä, Ivalo and Tromsø, or Kittilä and Rovaniemi, into one itinerary;
  • Midnight sun weeks in June and July, mostly hikers and families on a summer holiday.

Kittilä does not suit a day trip. At over three hours each way, the flight takes more of the day than the visit, and in December there is hardly any daylight at all. Leave on a Friday, come back on a Monday and you have a weekend that works, with the crew waiting at the airport or, if the aircraft goes home empty and returns for you, with a pair of positioning legs on the invoice. We price both ways so you can compare.

Empty Legs

Some jets fly north or south with nobody aboard, moving to their next job, and the operator will sell that seat-free leg cheaply rather than fly it for nothing. That is an empty leg. On the Kittilä route the supply follows the winter season.

Where Kittilä empty legs come from

– Holiday changeover days. An aircraft brings a party up on a Saturday and returns to Britain or Central Europe empty, and the leg south is the one most often offered. In the opposite direction, a jet going north to collect a party can fly there empty;

– Short breaks. A party that comes for a long weekend leaves an aircraft with an empty leg either way, and a midweek departure towards London or Helsinki can be cheaper than a fresh one-way charter;

– Northern rotation. Operators positioning between Helsinki, Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Tromsø put short regional legs on the market, and those short hops can be cheap.

Because the Lapland corridor is thinner and more seasonal than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Kittilä match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

A helicopter in Lapland is a tool for the edges of a trip. Levi is a quarter of an hour from the airport by road, so the aircraft does not save much time there; what it changes is the landing site. The places where rotary flight earns its fee are the last stretch to a chalet, a transfer between Levi and Ylläs, and a flight over the lakes and fells at the right hour.

Kittilä to Levi
about 15 km from the airport, against a drive of about a quarter of an hour; the point is a landing at the chalet or the hotel, agreed in advance
about 10 minutes each way
Kittilä to Ylläs
about 39 km to the fell, against a drive of about half an hour; useful for a party that splits its week between the two fells
about 20 minutes each way
An aurora or fell flight from Levi
a scenic flight in the blue hour over the lakes and fells, planned to the weather and to the light
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– Rotary flight is limited by where it may set down. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, and protected land has its own rules, so we check the status of a hotel lawn or a chalet plot before the quote is written;

– Lapland weather sets the schedule. Snow, low cloud and the short winter day can stop a helicopter on a morning when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– For the Christmas week and the World Cup weekend, book the helicopter together with the jet, or expect to be told there is no rotary capacity.

The machines used on this ground are the Airbus H125 for short scenic work, the wider H130 for chalet and fell transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable. The figures above use a straight-line distance at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the final time is confirmed with the operator.

Kittilä charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS · LEVI

Six people and a pile of ski bags for the festive week

London Luton - Kittilä, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 15 min · 6 pax

Two parents, four children and ten bags. The Phenom was quoted first and dropped once the bag count was added up, and the family went in a midsize cabin with the boots and helmets in the hold. The slot and the stand were requested before the aircraft was confirmed, and a car was waiting at the handler for the quarter-hour drive to the chalet.

WORLD CUP WEEKEND · LEVI

Three days at the slalom, in and out

Farnborough - Kittilä, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 15 min · 5 pax

The date was set by the race and not by the client. Five guests flew on the Friday and came back on the Monday, and the hotel and the cars were booked before the aircraft. The aircraft left Kittilä empty after the drop and came back for the return, which was cheaper than parking in the cold for three days.

AURORA WEEKEND · GLASS IGLOO

Two nights under the sky

London City - Kittilä, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 10 min · 2 pax

A couple in a glass igloo near Levi, with the sky checked each evening. We chose a Friday departure with a late-afternoon arrival so that the first night was not lost to the transfer. The date of the return was left open by a day, in case the weather turned and the clouds stayed.

SKI WEEK · YLLÄS

Eight friends and a week on the slopes

Birmingham - Kittilä, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 15 min · 8 pax

The party chose Ylläs for the length of its cross-country trails and the slopes. The airport is about 39 km from the fell, and a minibus waited at the handler. The aircraft flew home after the drop and came back on the Saturday, and the total was lower than a week of standing time on the apron.

WINTER BREAK · A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a labrador in the snow

Manchester - Helsinki - Kittilä, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 45 min and about 1 h 25 min · 4 pax + dog

The dog had to be cleared at Helsinki-Vantaa, so the trip was quoted as two legs. The Animal Health Certificate was dated inside ten days of arrival, the tapeworm treatment was given in Britain inside its window before the flight out, and the direct flight home from Finland needed none.

EMPTY LEG · MIDWEEK SOUTH

A jet already going your way

Kittilä - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 3 h 05 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party north on the Saturday and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a midweek departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Kittilä

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Kittilä?

About 3 hours 5 minutes from London Luton and 3 hours 10 minutes from London City in a Phenom 300E, covering roughly 1,248 to 1,288 nautical miles depending on the field. From Manchester or Birmingham allow about 3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes in a midsize cabin, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 45 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes. Kittilä is two hours ahead of Britain, so a departure at eight in the morning lands a little after one in the afternoon local time.

2How much does a private jet to Kittilä cost?

From about £16,250 one way on a Phenom 300E out of London Luton, and £16,400 from London City. Biggin Hill and Farnborough run £16,500 to £16,700, a midsize cabin costs £20,100 from Birmingham and £21,200 from Bristol, and from Scotland allow £22,200 to £22,700. The Christmas and New Year weeks, the school holiday weeks and the World Cup weekend can price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Levi and Ylläs?

Kittilä (KTT / EFKT), about 15 km from Levi and about 39 km from Ylläs. It has one 2,500 m runway, 15 aircraft stands and handling by two companies, and no hangar for visiting aircraft. Rovaniemi (RVN / EFRO) is 75 nautical miles to the south and the first alternative, Ivalo (IVL / EFIV) serves Saariselkä and Inari, and Enontekiö (ENF / EFET) serves the fell villages of the north-west.

4Does a private jet need permission to land at Kittilä, and what happens on arrival?

Kittilä is on the Finnish list of border crossing airports, with customs and immigration during the airport's operating hours on four hours' notice. A non-commercial private flight needs a flight plan and passenger details sent to the border guard; a foreign operator's commercial charter needs permission from the Finnish transport agency, requested at least 48 hours ahead. Finland is in Schengen and Britain is not, so passengers pass passport control and customs on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180.

5Can I fly on from Kittilä to Rovaniemi, Ivalo or Tromsø?

Rovaniemi is 75 nautical miles from Kittilä, so a Pilatus PC-12 flies it in about 40 minutes, against a road of 170 km from Rovaniemi to Levi. Enontekiö is 53 nautical miles, about 35 minutes, Ivalo is 82 nautical miles, about 40 minutes, and Tromsø is 183 nautical miles, about 1 hour. Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Enontekiö are all in Finland, so there is no passport control on those hops.

6Can I take my dog to Kittilä on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Finland asks for a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. The Finnish Food Authority lists Helsinki-Vantaa as the only airport entry point for pets arriving from outside the EU, so we plan the first landing there, confirm in writing that this applies to a private flight, and fly on to Kittilä. A dog also needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving in Finland. A direct flight home from Finland to Britain needs no further treatment unless the dog has been in another country or the routing includes one. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
