International rules for air transportation of dogs

If you want to transport dogs by plane from Great Britain into the EU, the current requirements are straightforward, and since 22 April 2026 there is one big change to know about: EU pet passports are no longer valid for GB residents, so every trip now runs on an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). At the preparation stage you need to:

• Microchip the dog with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant chip. The chip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, otherwise the vaccination does not count. If an older chip cannot be read by standard scanners, bring your own reader;
• Vaccinate against rabies at least 21 days before travel, with an EU-approved vaccine. The dog must be at least 12 weeks old at vaccination, which makes 15 weeks the practical minimum age for crossing the border;
• Get the AHC from an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before entering the EU. It covers a single entry and then stays valid for up to 6 months for onward travel inside the EU and for the return to Great Britain, as long as the rabies cover does not lapse;
• For dogs flying directly to Finland, Ireland, Malta or Norway, add a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival, recorded in the certificate.

A rabies antibody titre test is not needed for travel from Great Britain to the EU: it only applies when entering from unlisted third countries, and the old advice to test every dog is simply out of date. Vaccinations against distemper, leptospirosis and infectious hepatitis are strongly recommended by vets, but they are not a border requirement for France or other EU states.

 

 

The certificate must describe the dog: breed, age, name, colour, microchip number, plus every vaccination with dates and product names. It is forbidden to fly heavily pregnant or newly delivered dogs, and brachycephalic breeds with a flattened muzzle, such as Pekingese, pugs or French Bulldogs, need a vet consultation first: breathing at altitude is harder for them, and a check-up before the flight removes most of the risk.

 

Restrictions on the import of dogs

Veterinary control can refuse an animal that is too young or unwell, and on top of that many countries keep their own banned-breed lists. In the UK the law prohibits five breeds outright: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and, since 2024, the XL Bully - no charter can bring them into the country, and existing UK-kept XL Bullies live under an exemption scheme that does not cover imports. Germany bans the import of pit-bull-type breeds at the federal level, France refuses entry to its category one attack dogs, and Spain requires a licence for breeds on its PPP list. Note that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, one of Britain’s favourite family breeds, is not banned in the UK, whatever older guides claim.

Rules for the importation of dogs into the UK

The importation of dogs into Great Britain is regulated by DEFRA, and the modern rules are far friendlier than the old quarantine-era system that some guides still describe. There is no blood titre test when arriving from the EU or other listed countries, no six-month wait and no quarantine at all, provided four conditions are met:

1. The dog is microchipped (ISO 11784/11785), and the chip was implanted before the rabies vaccination;
2. The rabies vaccination is valid and was given at least 21 days before entering the UK;
3. A tapeworm treatment containing praziquantel was administered by a vet 24 to 120 hours before arrival and recorded in the documents. It is not needed when flying directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta;
4. The dog travels with the right document: an EU pet passport issued to an EU resident, a GB pet health certificate, or the Animal Health Certificate you used to leave Britain, which remains valid for the return for up to 6 months.

 

 

On a private flight there is one extra layer: the aircraft must be run by an APHA-approved operator, and the arrival airport must be on that operator’s approval. The check itself happens at the FBO minutes after landing: Border Force clears the passengers, then the team scans the chip and the paperwork.
