The airport was originally built as a Royal Air Force station in 1943. It was equipped with three concrete runways and two hangars. During the war years, the airport was used for training the RAF Bomber Command and rapid response teams. In 1946, the airport was closed as unnecessary.

The reconstruction of East Midlands Airport started in 1964 with extensive investments in its territory. In 1965, the airport was officially opened to civilian air traffic.
