Private jet charter in New Jersey

Many private jets that leave Britain for New York finish the crossing in New Jersey, and the state has enough business of its own to justify the flight: a pharmaceutical belt, a stadium, nine casinos on the coast and a shore that fills every summer. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever aircraft the crossing calls for. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Teterboro, Morristown, Newark, Trenton and Atlantic City each answer a different question, so the choice runs from the aircraft to the airfield and then to the paperwork the United States asks of everyone aboard.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter to New Jersey depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. On a crossing of this length the choice between a nonstop long-range cabin and a smaller jet with a fuel stop moves the price more than any other item. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, a Bombardier Challenger 350 with a fuel stop at Gander and two passengers aboard, landing at Teterboro. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to New Jersey?

The nonstop crossing from London to Teterboro takes about 6 h 55 min in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, and a little less from Scotland. We allow a routed distance of 2,899 to 3,130 nautical miles to Teterboro depending on the British field, against a published range of 3,200 nautical miles for a Challenger 350. On paper that aircraft clears the sector from the London fields by less than 100 nautical miles, which is not a margin anyone plans an Atlantic crossing around, so the Challenger flies in two legs with a stop at Gander in Newfoundland. The other New Jersey fields change the sum very little. Morristown adds about 15 nautical miles to the Farnborough figure and Newark about 11, while Atlantic City adds about 74, which leaves a Challenger at the very edge of its published range from Farnborough (3,179 nautical miles) and beyond it from Biggin Hill. New Jersey keeps Eastern time, five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure lands before lunch. The times below assume the headwind that is normal going west, and the table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning, British time, and the wheels touch down at Teterboro a few minutes before eleven local time. From the FBO door the stadium at East Rutherford is about 4 km away in a straight line, Times Square about 12 km and Morristown about 30 km, so a car does the rest in a time that depends on the Turnpike and the hour. The westbound day is long in the pleasant way: the flight takes 6 h 55 min, the clocks go back five hours, and a client who leaves after breakfast can be at a late lunch with the afternoon still ahead. Coming home the sums run the other way. An evening departure lands in Britain the next morning, with the same winds now behind the aircraft.

Nonstop or Gander: the question that decides the aircraft

– A Global or Gulfstream long-range jet flies London to Teterboro in one go. It suits most parties of five or more and anyone who wants to sleep on the way, and it spares the passengers a stop on a cold ramp in Newfoundland;

– A Challenger 350 has a published range of 3,200 nautical miles and the sector from Biggin Hill to Teterboro is roughly 3,135, so there is no room for a westbound headwind or the fuel reserves. It stops at Gander, which lies almost on the track: the route through it measures 3,106 nautical miles from Farnborough against 3,105 direct, so the stop costs an hour on the ground and almost no extra distance. For four people who do not mind it, this is the sensible buy. Atlantic City is the far case on this list, since the sector from Biggin Hill is 3,208 nautical miles, above the published range, and a stop is planned in any case;

– Light jets and turboprops do not cross the Atlantic from Britain as a rule. If the trip needs a light jet at the New Jersey end, a larger aircraft flies the crossing and the small one is booked locally for the onward legs.

Why the American legs are the cheap part

A trip to New Jersey is usually priced as one long crossing and a few short hops, and the hops cost a fraction of the crossing. A flight from Teterboro to Atlantic City in a Citation CJ3+ starts at £5,300, against £85,600 for the Atlantic leg in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, so adding a casino weekend or a week on Nantucket moves the total much less than people expect. The sensible way to plan it is to book the large aircraft for the ocean and ask us to quote the regional aircraft separately, since a light or midsize jet based on the east coast will almost always beat a long-range jet left on the apron for a week.

Before you accept an American onward quote

– Which airport, and what it asks of the aircraft. Teterboro wants permission before arrivals and limits takeoff weight to 100,000 lb, Morristown has a runway just under 6,000 ft and a tower that closes at 22:30, and Trenton's tower closes at 22:00. A quote that says only New Jersey has not told you which of these rules applies to your date;

– Whether the itinerary is one booking. Teterboro to Atlantic City to Palm Beach over a week costs less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you and no empty positioning flight is added at each stop. Leaving the United States for Britain also needs its own advance data filing for the aircraft, and it is built into the same plan;

– Who is allowed to fly it. The United States treats a charter between two American points as a domestic job. A non-US aircraft may carry passengers between two US points only if they arrived on it from abroad or are leaving on it for abroad, so the jet that brought you from London can take you on to Atlantic City, while a hop for another party is normally flown by a US-registered aircraft. Each US leg flown by a foreign aircraft also needs its own permit to proceed from customs.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Aircraft that can cross the Atlantic are fewer than the ones that serve Europe, and their positions change daily, so a long-range jet already in London or Paris is often cheaper than one that has to be brought over from North America first. The ocean is crossed in both directions every day, so when the first leg is a return to Britain a day or two after our trip, we look for an aircraft that is coming this way anyway.

Business aviation airports in New Jersey

New Jersey has more usable business jet airfields than most countries, and they are not interchangeable. One serves Manhattan, one serves the pharmaceutical belt, one is an airline airport that lets private aircraft in, and the rest belong to the shore, the south and Princeton. It helps to know which is which before a quote arrives with one of them in it.

Airport What it gives you
Teterboro, Bergen County
TEB / KTEB
The default choice for Manhattan, the Meadowlands and the north of the state, about 12 km from Times Square in a straight line and 4 km from the stadium. Two runways of 7,000 ft (2,134 m) and 6,013 ft (1,833 m). Atlantic Aviation, Jet Aviation and several Signature terminals are the FBOs, with customs on site. Jet operators need the airport manager's approval to operate, arrivals are requested through the airport's prior-permission process, typically at least 24 hours ahead, and the takeoff weight limit is 100,000 lb. No slot system is listed. Customs officers inspect arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15 every day, and the airport asks operators to avoid non-essential flights between 23:00 and 06:00
Morristown Municipal, Morris County
MMU / KMMU
The airfield for the pharmaceutical and corporate belt, about 5 km from the centre of Morristown and 36 km from Times Square. A main runway of 5,998 ft (1,828 m) and a second of 3,997 ft (1,218 m), so the largest long-range jets are checked for weight and temperature before we quote. Atlantic Aviation and Signature are the FBOs. The tower runs from 06:45 to 22:30, a departure fee applies between 23:00 and 06:45, and a long-standing night curfew and noise rules govern the field, so we ask the airport office about hours before a late arrival is planned. Customs is a user-fee facility that works on weekdays in office hours; outside them, an overtime fee applies, and the request must reach the airport before noon on the day, or before noon on the Friday for a weekend
Newark Liberty, Essex County
EWR / KEWR
An airline airport about 17 km from Times Square with runways of 11,000, 9,999 and 6,725 ft. Signature is the only business aviation FBO listed, customs officers are available round the clock, and landing fees are paid by card. The FAA's hourly cap at Newark applies to scheduled airline operations, so a private jet is not expected to need one, which we confirm for the date, but there is a single business aviation FBO and the airline traffic is heavy around it. It is the fallback for an arrival after 23:15, when Teterboro's inspection hours end
Trenton-Mercer, Mercer County
TTN / KTTN
About 6 km north-west of Trenton and 15 km from Princeton in a straight line, roughly halfway between New York and Philadelphia. A main runway of 6,006 ft (1,831 m) and a second of 4,800 ft (1,463 m). Signature and Infinity Aviation (listed elsewhere under its earlier name, FlightServ) are the FBOs. The airport is listed as a customs user-fee airport, so clearance is arranged in advance. The tower runs 06:00 to 22:00 and a voluntary curfew applies from midnight to 06:00. The right choice for Princeton and central New Jersey
Atlantic City International
ACY / KACY
About 14 km north-west of Atlantic City, with a main runway of 10,001 ft (3,048 m), long enough for any business jet, and a second of 6,145 ft (1,873 m). Signature is the only FBO listed. U.S. Customs is listed as available on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00, arranged at least 24 hours ahead, with a user fee, and noise abatement procedures are in force. The field for the casinos and the Boardwalk, and a poor choice for an arrival from Britain at a weekend
Monmouth Executive, Wall Township
BLM / KBLM
The business airfield for the northern shore, about 11 km from Asbury Park, with a main runway of 7,345 ft (2,239 m) but only 85 ft wide. Monmouth Jet Center is the handler and the airport is open round the clock. No customs is listed, so a flight from abroad clears first at Teterboro or Newark. Right for a shore weekend by turboprop or light jet
Princeton
PCT / 39N
A small field about 5 km from the centre of Princeton, with one runway of 3,499 ft (1,067 m) and 75 ft wide, and Princeton Air Corp as the operator. Too short for most business jets, so a jet for the university lands at Trenton and a turboprop or piston aircraft can use this field
Cape May County, Wildwood
WWD / KWWD
The airfield for the southern tip of the state, with runways of 5,252 ft (1,601 m) and 4,998 ft (1,523 m) and Flight Level Aviation as the handler. No customs is listed. A light jet or turboprop field for Cape May and Wildwood, and a long drive from the rest of the state

Four points settle most New Jersey arrivals:

Choose the airport

Teterboro for Manhattan, the Meadowlands and the north, Morristown for Morris County and the pharmaceutical campuses, Trenton for Princeton, Atlantic City for the casinos, Monmouth Executive for the shore. Newark is the late-night back-up. We put the airport and the FBO in writing, and the driver's order carries the FBO name as well.

Hours and noise

Teterboro asks operators to avoid non-essential flights from 23:00 to 06:00, and Runway 24 has a stricter departure noise limit between 22:00 and 07:00. Morristown's tower closes at 22:30 and Trenton's at 22:00. The Teterboro rules are voluntary, but a late arrival still needs the handler's agreement, so we agree the times in advance.

Border and passport

British citizens need an ESTA or a visa. The aircraft needs advance data sent to US customs and permission to land. On a private aircraft the ESTA normally works only if the operator holds the right status, so we check that before we quote. Details are in the border section below.

Car and late nights

Customs officers at Teterboro inspect arrivals between 07:30 and 23:15, and Newark clears round the clock. Morristown and Atlantic City clear mainly on weekdays, so a weekend arrival is planned around them or routed through Teterboro. A car from the FBO is the normal plan, and we book it with the handler so the driver is waiting at the right door.

business aviation

Border, ESTA and American customs

The United States is not in the Schengen area or any shared travel zone with Britain, so every passenger is checked by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival. British citizens with a full British passport need an ESTA or a visa. The ESTA covers short visits of up to 90 days, is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and costs about US$40, roughly £30. It is applied for online, and the border service encourages applications at least 72 hours before travel. The passport has to be valid for the whole stay. Approval is not a guarantee of entry, and officers may ask to look at a phone or social media accounts. Anyone with an arrest, a criminal record or a past refusal should check the position before booking, and business travel for a US company may not be covered by an ESTA at all.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

The rule that surprises owners of private aircraft is the carrier. Visa-free travel on an ESTA normally applies on a flight whose operator has signed up to the Visa Waiver Program, and business aviation operators can hold that status as well as airlines. Passengers on an aircraft whose operator does not hold it normally need a visa, ESTA or not. Crew are handled separately, under their own visa rules. We ask the operator for its status when the quote is prepared, because it can decide which aircraft is chosen.

For the aircraft there is a separate set of steps, and the operator, the handler and our team carry them out. The pilot sends the crew and passenger manifest electronically, through the eAPIS system, no later than 60 minutes before departure, and the same applies on the way out of the United States. The pilot also requests permission to land from customs at the arrival airport; at Teterboro, Morristown and Newark the fact sheets we work from ask for it at least two hours before departing the foreign airport, and the permission is valid for 30 minutes either side of the estimated arrival time. Outside that window it has to be requested again. At Teterboro the request also names the customs ramp, the north side or the south side at Jet Aviation, and passengers on the north side reboard and taxi on to their own FBO after inspection. Live animals, weapons, hunting trophies and commercial goods have to be notified to customs in advance. We confirm the procedure with the operator for each trip, because the rules change and a booking has to follow the text in force and not a memory of it.

The choice of airport is partly a choice of customs hours. Teterboro clears arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15 every day, Newark round the clock, Morristown on weekdays in office hours with an overtime fee outside them, and Atlantic City on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00 with a day's notice. Trenton is a user-fee airport where the officer is booked in advance, and Monmouth Executive and Cape May list no customs at all. At Morristown the fee for clearing a transient jet is about £950, and the overtime charge starts at about £450 for the first two hours. Teterboro and Morristown process passenger flights and not cargo, so a freight consignment travels separately.

The way home has its own formalities. Britons and Irish citizens need no permission to enter the United Kingdom, while most other visa-free visitors need a UK electronic travel authorisation. For the aircraft, a General Aviation Report is filed with the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than two hours before departure. The penalties for getting it wrong are real: a fine of £2,500 for a first landing at an aerodrome that is not a regulated one, and £2,000 for each passenger carried without permission. The operator and handler file the report, and we check that it is done.

From the apron to the Meadowlands

Distances in New Jersey are short on the map and long on the road, because the Turnpike, the Parkway and the Hudson crossings decide the time. The figures below are straight-line distances, so the road is always longer, but they show the order of things.

Teterboro to MetLife Stadium
the shortest transfer on this page, across the Meadowlands complex in East Rutherford
about 4 km straight-line
Teterboro to Times Square
the usual landing for Manhattan, on the New Jersey side of the Hudson
about 12 km straight-line
Newark to Times Square
the airline airport with round-the-clock customs
about 17 km straight-line
Morristown to Times Square
to the west, and 5 km from the centre of Morristown itself
about 36 km straight-line
Monmouth Executive to Asbury Park
for the northern shore, its boardwalk and its music venues
about 11 km straight-line
Trenton-Mercer to Princeton
the airport for the university and for central New Jersey
about 15 km straight-line
Atlantic City International to the Boardwalk
north-west of the casinos, reached by the Atlantic City Expressway
about 14 km straight-line

Flying to New Jersey with a dog or a cat

The United States asks little paperwork of a dog arriving from Britain and more of a dog going home. The animal sits with you in the cabin, and the flight is long enough that most dogs sleep through it. What matters is the timing of three things: the American entry form before you leave, the British certificate for the return, which has a short life, and a tapeworm treatment inside a narrow window.

private flight with animals

What the two countries ask for:

  • For a dog entering the United States from Britain, a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The form is free, completed online, and a separate one is needed for each dog. The receipt is valid for six months and can be used for several entries if the dog has not been in a country on the high-risk list;
  • The dog must be at least six months old, carry a microchip that a universal scanner can read, and look healthy on arrival. Britain is not on the high-risk list, and a dog that has not been in a listed country in the last six months needs no extra rabies paperwork, though vaccination is strongly recommended. There is no restriction on the airport of entry;
  • New Jersey asks for a health certificate for a dog, signed by a licensed vet and dated within 30 days of travel. Its own pages do not say clearly whether a pet travelling with its owner is exempt, so we check the position with the state for your dates. For a cat the state sets no specific entry requirement. Customs must also be told in advance about any live animal on board, and we agree the arrival point with the handler beforehand;
  • For the return to Britain, the United States is a "part 2" listed country: a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel, with the animal arriving in Britain within those ten days. A pet passport or animal health certificate is not accepted. The microchip must be fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination, the animal must be at least 12 weeks old, and the primary vaccination must be at least 21 days old;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain. Cats are exempt. No more than five animals per traveller.

What catches owners out on the New Jersey run

– The return certificate has to be dated inside ten days of travel, so a two-week stay means a vet appointment in America, and the tapeworm treatment must fall in its own window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. Book both before you leave Britain;

– The CDC receipt is for one dog and one departure country. A second dog needs a second form, and a dog that goes on to another country first may need a new one;

– A long crossing is a long day for an animal. Plan a walk before departure, and if you use a Gander stop, ask the handler whether the animal may leave the aircraft there. The hotel, the helicopter operator and any casino or venue on the itinerary have to accept the animal separately.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. We also confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal on the way back into Britain.

The New Jersey calendar: a stadium season, a shore summer and a reunion weekend

The year in New Jersey is set by football, horses, universities and the sea. Autumn belongs to the stadium, late spring to Princeton, summer to the coast, and winter to the families flying south. A handful of fixed dates decide when a ramp is full, and knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

September to January
The Giants and the Jets play their home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, which seats 82,500, mostly on Sundays. Teterboro lies about 4 km away, and a day trip by jet for a match is a familiar request. The stadium also stages large concerts and football internationals in the summer months
September
The high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly falls in the second half of September, and delegations, security and motorcades fill the whole region. Teterboro is one of the ramps that feels it, and this is among the busiest stretches of the year for private aviation
November to early August
Racing at the Meadowlands, beside the stadium. The harness stakes races run from November to the first Saturday of August, and the autumn is given over to the thoroughbreds. A race-day trip is short, and the aircraft usually waits at Teterboro
Late May to early June
Princeton Reunions fill the weekend before Commencement with upwards of 25,000 alumni and guests, and the Saturday P-rade crosses the campus. Trenton-Mercer is the nearest jet airport, and Newark sits behind it
Early May to Labor Day
Monmouth Park in Oceanport races through the summer, and the Haskell Invitational for three-year-olds falls in late July. Monmouth Executive in Wall Township is the usual landing for the Monmouth County shore
Memorial Day to Labor Day
The Jersey Shore season. Asbury Park draws visitors to its beach, boardwalk and music venues, Atlantic City is at its busiest in summer, and weekends are the crowded days on every road to the coast
August
Thunder over the Boardwalk, the Atlantic City airshow, is held in August, usually on a Wednesday, with attendance reported above 750,000. The Boardwalk and the hotels are full, and the arrivals at Atlantic City International are planned with extra care
December to March
The Florida runs begin, with families and executives heading south for the winter. Snow and de-icing can add time to any departure, so a tight connection is a bad idea

Why a match day or a shore weekend costs more

Not the flying. The fleet that crosses the Atlantic is much smaller than the one that serves Europe, and the long-range aircraft that suit New Jersey are wanted on the same days from every direction. What gets tight is ramp space at Teterboro, the cars and the crew duty hours, and Teterboro asks for permission before arrivals, so a late request has fewer choices. A booking made a fortnight before UN week or a stadium weekend can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft brought over the ocean empty. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the peaks a crossing can usually be arranged within a few days.

Ways to bring the New Jersey price down

  • Choose the aircraft for the crossing and not for the wish list. A Challenger 350 with a stop at Gander costs less than a long-range jet and takes about an hour longer; for four people that is a fair trade;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A long-range jet coming from London needs less positioning than one coming from Dubai or Florida, and on a transatlantic sector positioning is a large share of the bill;
  • Be flexible by a day or two. A flight that avoids UN week and the football weekends is easier to price, and a return that fits an empty leg is cheaper than a fresh charter;
  • Land where the meeting is. Morristown for the pharmaceutical campuses and Trenton for Princeton can save a long drive, and a quieter airfield can save a congested ramp.

Types of flights

New Jersey produces a different mix from the European destinations we cover, because it is a pharmaceutical centre, a stadium, a casino coast and the back door to Manhattan at the same time.

  • Pharmaceutical and life-sciences travel along the corridor of drug and device campuses in Morris, Somerset and Middlesex counties, from Novartis at East Hanover to Johnson & Johnson at New Brunswick. The state has long called itself the medicine chest of the world, the dates are set by meetings and the nearest field is usually Morristown or Teterboro;
  • Sport and entertainment at the Meadowlands, from the football season to stadium concerts and the races, where the flight is tied to a date fixed by the organisers and the return is often the same night;
  • Casino weekends in Atlantic City, usually a transatlantic jet to Teterboro and a short hop south, or a direct arrival at Atlantic City when the customs hours allow it;
  • Shore leisure in summer, from Asbury Park and the Monmouth County towns to Cape May, usually by a turboprop or a light jet from Teterboro;
  • Academic and family visits to Princeton, tied to Reunions, Commencement and term dates, landing at Trenton-Mercer;
  • Onward journeys to Florida and the rest of the United States, using New Jersey as the port of entry and a smaller jet from there.

The one-way and return question is worth a closer look. On a crossing of this length a same-week return is usually priced as two separate sectors, plus the crew's rest and hotel in New Jersey, so we quote both options. Where the stay is short, leaving the aircraft at Teterboro and returning on the third day is often better value than flying home empty and coming back, and where the stay is a week or more, two one-way flights are cleaner than waiting.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. In New Jersey they come from the pattern of events and seasons rather than from sheer volume, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where New Jersey empty legs come from

– Event weeks. Aircraft arrive full for a stadium weekend, the General Assembly or Princeton Reunions and leave empty a day or two later, so the eastbound and southbound sectors appear in the days after;

– Transatlantic positioning. A long-range jet that has taken a party from London to Teterboro often has to return, and that empty crossing is the one most worth looking for;

– The Florida rotation. Aircraft based in the New York area and in Florida move between the two in the winter months, and the short northbound and southbound legs can be cheap.

Because the long-range fleet is small, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a New Jersey match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In New Jersey a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip: the hop from Teterboro to a Manhattan heliport, or a flight down the coast. Heliports in the city are few and noise rules limit what they allow, so a transfer is planned like a flight and not hailed like a taxi.

Teterboro to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport
about 17 km straight-line, to the pad at Pier 6 on the East River in the Financial District
on request
Teterboro to the East 34th Street Heliport
a public heliport on the East River, run by Atlantic Aviation, for Midtown meetings
on request
Teterboro to Monmouth Executive
about 74 km straight-line to Wall Township, a way to reach the northern shore without the coastal roads
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. The Downtown Manhattan Heliport is the only one in the city that takes sightseeing flights, and there it is capped by a limit on the number a year, a lower limit on Saturdays and a ban on Sundays. Private transfers are a different matter, but we describe the purpose of the flight accurately when the slot is requested;

– The pad at the Downtown Manhattan Heliport is rated for aircraft up to 50,000 lb, so a corporate helicopter is not limited by size. The limits are noise, hours and the city's agreement. Teterboro and Morristown also ask helicopters to avoid flying below 1,000 ft over residential areas;

– Weather sets the schedule. Fog, snow and low cloud can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a shore transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day.

The machines used on this ground include the Airbus H125 for short transfers, the wider H130 for family parties, and the H135 and Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

New Jersey charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

NONSTOP · THE LONG-RANGE CABIN

Six people, one stretch of the Atlantic

Farnborough - Teterboro, Bombardier Global 6000, about 6 h 55 min · 6 pax

A company team heading for a week of meetings in the north of the state, leaving mid-morning and landing in time for a late lunch. The reason for the larger cabin was less the seats than the luggage and the wish to work in the air without a stop. They were met at the FBO, the customs officer inspected the aircraft there, and the car was at the door.

GANDER STOP · THE SENSIBLE COMPROMISE

Four people, a Challenger and an hour in Newfoundland

Biggin Hill - Teterboro, Bombardier Challenger 350, about 7 h 40 min plus a stop · 4 pax

A smaller party that wanted to keep the budget down. The Challenger has no real margin on this sector with a westbound headwind, so the quote included the stop at Gander, a turn of about an hour with fuel and a leg stretch. The saving over a long-range jet was real, and nobody complained about the hour.

MORRISTOWN · THE PHARMACEUTICAL RUN

Three executives and a weekday meeting

Manchester - Morristown, Bombardier Global 6000, about 6 h 45 min · 3 pax

A midweek trip to a campus in Morris County, timed so that the arrival fell inside the customs hours at Morristown and not outside them. The runway is under 6,000 ft, so the operator checked the weight and the temperature for the day before the quote was confirmed. The party cleared the border at the field and was at the meeting within the hour.

STADIUM WEEKEND · FIXED DATES

A group for a home game at the Meadowlands

London Luton - Teterboro, Gulfstream G550, about 6 h 55 min · 8 pax

The date was set by the fixture and not by the client. Eight people, tickets in hand and a request for a quiet arrival. The permission to land at Teterboro went in well ahead, the handler pre-arranged the customs check, and the return was booked at the same time so that the aircraft did not go back empty.

A DOG ON BOARD · TWO CERTIFICATES

Three adults and a labrador for a ten-day stay

Edinburgh - Teterboro, Gulfstream G550, about 6 h 30 min · 3 pax + dog

The CDC form receipt was completed online before departure, the New Jersey health certificate was dated inside 30 days of travel, and the Great Britain pet health certificate for the way home had to be dated inside ten days of the return flight. The tapeworm treatment fell between 24 and 120 hours before landing. We booked the vet appointment in New Jersey together with the aircraft.

EMPTY LEG · THE WAY HOME

A jet already going your way

Teterboro - London Stansted, Bombardier Global 6000 empty leg, about 5 h 55 min · 4 pax

The aircraft had brought a party over for a long weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an evening departure that landed in Britain at breakfast time.

Frequently asked questions about flying to New Jersey

1How long is a private jet flight from London to New Jersey?

About 6 h 55 min nonstop in a Global 6000 from Farnborough to Teterboro, and a little less from Edinburgh or Glasgow in a Gulfstream G550. A Challenger 350 needs a stop at Gander and takes about 7 h 40 min in the air plus an hour on the ground. The routed distance for the nonstop fields is 2,899 to 3,130 nautical miles. New Jersey is five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure lands before lunch.

2How much does a private jet to New Jersey cost?

From about £58,100 one way for a Challenger 350 from London Luton with a stop at Gander. A nonstop long-range jet starts from about £85,600 from Farnborough and £83,200 from Manchester, and a Gulfstream G550 from Edinburgh starts from £84,950. Match days, UN week in September and the days before Christmas price above these figures.

3Which New Jersey airport should a private jet use?

Teterboro (TEB / KTEB) for Manhattan, the Meadowlands and most of the north. It is about 12 km from Times Square, has FBOs open round the clock and customs on site, and it needs permission for arrivals. Morristown (MMU / KMMU) suits Morris County and the pharmaceutical campuses, Trenton-Mercer (TTN / KTTN) suits Princeton, and Atlantic City (ACY / KACY) suits the casinos. Newark takes late arrivals, with customs round the clock.

4Do I need a visa or an ESTA to fly to New Jersey?

British citizens with a full British passport need an ESTA or a visa. The ESTA allows visits of up to 90 days, is valid for two years or until the passport expires, and costs about US$40, roughly £30. On a private aircraft it normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote. The passport must be valid for the whole stay.

5What does a private jet need to land in the United States?

The pilot sends the crew and passenger manifest through the eAPIS system at least 60 minutes before departure and requests permission to land from customs, which at Teterboro means at least two hours before leaving the foreign airport. The permission is valid for 30 minutes either side of the estimated arrival time. Customs officers meet the aircraft at the FBO, and at Teterboro they inspect arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15, while Morristown and Atlantic City clear mainly on weekdays.

6Can I take my dog to New Jersey on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Going out you need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, a microchip and a dog at least six months old that looks healthy on arrival, and New Jersey asks for a vet's health certificate dated within 30 days of travel. For the return, the United States is a part 2 country, so a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel is needed, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing.
