Palma is served by one primary airport for all aviation:
- Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI / LEPA), 8 km east of the city centre, is the island’s only gateway for private jets. Son Bonet, a few kilometres inland, is a light aviation aerodrome and takes no business jet traffic
Palma de Mallorca Airport (IATA: PMI, ICAO: LEPA) is the main international airport of the Balearic Islands, 8 km east of the city centre in the Son Sant Joan district. The airport has two parallel runways: 06L/24R at 3,270 metres and 06R/24L at 3,000 metres, both 45 metres wide, which between them accommodate every aircraft category we operate. It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is the only airport in the Balearics that does. A dedicated general aviation terminal on the north side of the airport serves private aviation clients with VIP lounge facilities and ramp access. Peak summer period (July and August) sees extremely high traffic at PMI and early slot booking is essential for these months. UK citizens do not require a visa for Spain for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Slots and ramp space in the summer peak
Two things behave differently at Palma between roughly mid-June and mid-September, and neither concerns the aircraft. Slots are required for every movement, issued in UTC with a tolerance of about fifteen minutes, and they cannot be requested more than fifteen days ahead. Parking runs to the same window and is the tighter of the two: in the busiest weeks a request may be refused outright, and larger cabins can be held to around three hours on the ground. When that happens the jet sets you down and repositions, often to Valencia or Barcelona on the mainland, returning for your departure. It is ordinary practice here rather than a failure, and it belongs in the quote from the start instead of arriving as a surprise in August. Outside the peak, and particularly between October and May, none of this bites and a Palma charter can be put together in a day or two.
What the round-the-clock licence actually buys you
– A late departure after a dinner or a regatta prize-giving, which on an island with a night curfew is simply not on the table;
– A first-light arrival that puts you on the water or on the bike before the heat, which matters from June and becomes the point of the exercise in August;
– A working alternate for the rest of the archipelago. When another Balearic field closes for the night or fills its ramp, Palma is where the aircraft goes, which is worth knowing when a trip covers more than one island.

Flying to Palma with your pet
Spain asks nothing unusual of an animal arriving from Britain, and at two hours this is one of the gentler routes we fly with a dog on board. What deserves a paragraph of its own is not the paperwork but the island itself, because Mallorca is unusually easy to travel to with an animal and unusually easy to get wrong in August.
What Spain asks for is short, and every item on it will be familiar to a British vet:
- An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
- A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
- An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the return home for up to six months;
- Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
- Praziquantel from a Spanish vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.
Three things worth planning on this island
– Heat and the apron. From late June the tarmac here is punishing by the middle of the day, and the round-the-clock licence at this airport is genuinely useful for animals: an early morning or late evening movement avoids the worst of it entirely, which on a curfewed island is not an option;
– The onward leg. A helicopter to a Tramuntana finca or a tender out to a yacht is a different conversation from the flight, and not every rotary operator or skipper takes dogs. We settle that at the quote stage rather than at the aircraft steps;
– The worming appointment for the journey home. It has to happen on the island inside the 24 to 120 hour window, and in high season practices fill up. We book it with a Palma vet as part of the flight arrangements and time it against your departure.
Why this route suits animals better than most
Nothing goes in a hold and no weight limit applies, so a large dog travels exactly as a small one does, on the cabin floor beside you. Two hours is short enough that most sleep through it, and the island is genuinely dog-friendly once you arrive: the coastal paths, the Tramuntana villages and a good many hotels and finca rentals take animals as a matter of course. Can I add Ibiza or Menorca to the same charter?
Yes. Ibiza is 75 nm away (approximately 25 minutes by jet) and Menorca is 71 nm (approximately 25 minutes). Is Palma airport good for private jets?
Yes. Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI / LEPA) has a dedicated general aviation terminal with full VIP lounge facilities, ramp access and professional handling. The runways are 3,270 and 3,000 metres, which covers every aircraft category. In peak summer (July and August), PMI is one of the busiest private aviation airports in Europe and early slot booking is strongly recommended.
Can I bring my pet on a private jet to Palma?
Yes. Pets travel in the cabin with you throughout the flight. For travel from the UK to Spain you need an EU Animal Health Certificate, a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel) and tapeworm treatment for dogs (24 to 120 hours before arrival). The 2-hour flight from London is comfortable for most pets.
Do UK citizens need a visa for Spain?
No. UK citizens can visit Spain for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. A valid UK passport is required. Private jet passengers clear customs and immigration at the general aviation terminal at PMI.

Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands and one of the most genuinely surprising cities in the Mediterranean - a place that confounds the expectation that a mass-tourism island capital would be architecturally undistinguished and gastronomically predictable. The old city of Palma is exceptional: a compact historic core of Gothic churches, Renaissance palaces, Arab baths, covered markets and winding medieval lanes centred on the extraordinary Cathedral of Santa Maria (La Seu), begun in 1229 and completed over four centuries, its flying buttresses reaching directly from the sea wall over the harbour. The area around the Cathedral - the Almudaina Palace, the Banys Arabs, the Carrer del Conqueridor, the Placa Major - constitutes one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Spain.
The transformation of Palma's restaurant and hotel scene over the past fifteen years has been among the most rapid in Mediterranean Europe. The city now has a serious concentration of high-end dining - Adrián Quetglas (one Michelin star), Marc Fosh (one Michelin star in the Relais & Chateaux Hotel Convent de la Missio) and a cluster of strong independent restaurants in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood that would hold their own in any European capital. The hotel infrastructure has kept pace: Can Cera, the Nixe Palace, the Castillo Hotel Son Vida and the Hotel Sant Francesc in the old town represent a range of accommodation from historic palau conversions to contemporary design hotels, all within easy reach of the Cathedral district.
Beyond the city, Mallorca divides into distinct landscapes that attract different private aviation client profiles. What to do on the island
- Road cycling in the Tramuntana. The Serra de Tramuntana is the premier road cycling destination in Europe for serious cyclists. The Sa Calobra climb (10.1 km, 7% average gradient), the Puig Major summit and the Col de Soller are benchmarks of Mediterranean cycling. Professional teams train here from January to April. - Superyacht and sailing. Mallorca is the most active superyacht hub in the western Mediterranean outside Monaco. The Real Club Nautico de Palma hosts the Copa del Rey regatta in August. Port Adriano on the south-west coast accommodates vessels up to 80 metres. We arrange berth bookings and yacht connections as part of multi-modal itineraries;
- Golf. Mallorca has eleven golf courses of varying quality. Son Vida Golf (Son Muntaner, Son Vida and Son Quint courses) adjacent to the castle hotel is the most convenient for Palma visitors. Golf Son Gual in the Palma hills is considered the island's most technically demanding layout;

- Beach clubs and day trips. The east coast coves - Cala Llombards, Cala Mondrago, Cala Santanyi - are the island's finest beaches, accessible in approximately 60 to 75 minutes from Palma by car. For a day at the finest beach clubs, Es Trenc on the south coast (30 minutes) is the most popular with the private jet clientele.
