Where the aeroplane earns its place on those legs is a day that has to take in two cities and return, or a party with equipment, or an evening departure onward to somewhere else entirely. That last case is where this airport is unusual, because it can take that departure at an hour when others cannot.
Two points on the wider network

One airport serves both cities, and the thing worth knowing about it is not its size but its hours.
What the absence of a curfew is actually worth
German airports are strict about night movements and most of them close to jets in the small hours. This one does not. Night noise charges apply, aircraft have to meet the relevant noise standard, and the operator confirms the position for your particular type, but there is no ban to work around. Two consequences follow for a British client. The first is that a genuinely late departure is actually bookable rather than theoretical, so an agenda that overruns costs you nothing. The second is that a delayed inbound does not cascade, because the return sector is not racing a closing time. Neither of those is true at every field in this region, and where the schedule is tight it is a reason to choose this airport over the larger ones around it.

Three practical points
– Germany is in the EU and in Schengen and Britain is in neither, so there is a border. On a private arrival it is crossed inside the general aviation terminal, and the federal police ask for notice of non-Schengen movements rather than handling them on sight;
– A British passport needs no visa for a short business visit, and the formality on arrival is brief;
– The field carries heavy freight traffic overnight as well as passengers, so slots are coordinated by the handling agent rather than assumed. Outside the fair weeks this is routine and quick.

Three things to settle with the transfer
– Tell us which of the two cities you are going to. Cologne and Bonn are opposite directions from the same apron and half an hour apart, and on a same-day return that decides whether the schedule holds;
– In carnival week the centre of Cologne is closed to vehicles for days at a time. The drive is still short but it ends further out than usual, and that is worth knowing before a car is booked to a hotel door;
– For a late arrival the rail option thins out while the road does not. Since this airport takes movements at any hour, the car is arranged to meet the aircraft rather than assumed to be waiting.
Flying to Cologne with a dog or a cat

- A microchip to ISO 11784/11785, and it must be in place before the rabies jab rather than after it;
- Rabies vaccination completed at least 21 days ahead of arrival, the animal being 12 weeks or older when it was done;
- An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, no more than 10 days old at the EU border, good for six months of return journeys;
- A ceiling of five animals to one owner, all travelling in the cabin rather than as freight;
- A tapeworm treatment from a German vet 24 to 120 hours before the flight back to Britain, written into the certificate with the date and product. Dogs only.
Three points specific to this trip
– The worming appointment governs the return rather than the outbound, and it has to happen in Germany inside the window. On a two-day trip that wants booking before you leave rather than on arrival;
– Cologne is relaxed about dogs by European standards and most hotels take them without fuss. The exhibition halls do not, so if the trip is a fair the animal stays behind at the hotel;
– Breed restrictions in Germany are set by each state and North Rhine-Westphalia has its own list. We check it against your dog at the quote stage rather than at the aircraft steps.

Carnival, and why we raise it before anything else
Every city has public holidays and most are a minor nuisance. Cologne carnival is not. For several days the old town closes to vehicles, a large part of the workforce is not at a desk, and a meeting arranged inside it will quietly fail to happen. Nothing in the flight availability signals any of this, and the aircraft will be perfectly findable, which is exactly the trap. British clients booking a business trip to Cologne in February are the ones most likely to walk into it. We check the dates as a matter of course and say so at the enquiry. For a client who is coming for the carnival itself, the opposite advice applies and the booking wants to be months old.

A short sector into a dense corporate region produces a particular mix, and almost none of it is leisure:

Discounts commonly reach half a fresh charter and sometimes better. Because the sector is short to begin with, the absolute figures are modest, which makes this one of the few routes where an empty leg brings private flying within reach of an ordinary business travel budget. Sharing places two or three separate bookings in one cabin travelling the same way on the same day, with the cost divided between them. On this route the fair calendar does much of the matching for us.

When it earns its cost, and when it does not
For the drive into Cologne or Bonn, almost never. Twenty-five minutes on a German road is not a problem requiring a solution, and offering a rotary transfer for it would be selling rather than advising. Where it does earn its place is industrial: a plant with its own pad, a day that has to reach three sites across the Ruhr and return, or a property in the Eifel that the road serves badly. The test is whether the destination is awkward on the ground, not whether the client can afford the alternative, and we quote both so the difference is plain.

– This is among the busiest airspace in Europe, with Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and the Dutch approaches all close by. Rotary routing is tightly controlled and arranged in advance rather than improvised;

Gamescom in late August, which fills the hotels further ahead than anything else in the calendar, and the large winter and autumn fairs at Koelnmesse. Carnival in the week before Lent is a different problem: the aircraft is available but the city stops working, so a business trip arranged inside it will not achieve much.
