Business aviation airports in Hamburg

Fuhlsbuttel is the airport, and its position is the first thing worth knowing: eight and a half kilometres north of the centre, which is closer than Heathrow is to London or Charles de Gaulle to Paris. Twenty minutes puts you at the Rathaus. The general aviation terminal handles private traffic separately from the fourteen million scheduled passengers who pass through each year.

One airfield that appears on maps is not an option at all. Finkenwerder, on the south bank of the Elbe, belongs to Airbus and serves the assembly line there: corporate, test and delivery flights only, no third party charter. It is eight nautical miles from Fuhlsbuttel and of no practical use to a visitor, which is worth saying because it is sometimes listed as a Hamburg alternative.

 

 

Flying to Hamburg with a dog or a cat

Germany is straightforward in both directions and the crossing takes an hour and a quarter, which makes this an easy route with an animal aboard. The paperwork is the standard European set and your own vet will have issued it many times.

What Germany asks for on the way in:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
• An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the journey home for up to four months;
• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a German vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Hamburg is the second city of Germany and its richest, and both facts come from the same source: the port. Nine hundred years of trade have left a place that looks and behaves quite unlike the rest of the country, closer in temperament to the Dutch and Scandinavian cities across the water than to Munich or Frankfurt. The merchant families still matter here, the understatement is deliberate, and the city has more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam and London put together.

What brings business is concentrated and easy to name. The port handles the container traffic of central Europe. Airbus assembles the A320 family on the south bank of the Elbe at Finkenwerder, the third largest aviation site in the world by employment.
