Business aviation airports in Alicante

Alicante-Elche is the airport, and for almost every booking it is the only one worth discussing. It sits nine kilometres south west of the city and ten east of Elche, has a single runway of three thousand metres, and handles close to twenty million passengers a year, which makes it the busiest field in south eastern Spain. Private traffic goes through the general aviation terminal on the northern side, away from the tourist crowds.

One name is worth a word of explanation, because it comes up in older material. San Javier, on the coast south of here, stopped taking civil flights in January 2019 and is now a Spanish Air Force field. The airport that replaced it is Corvera, seventy-three kilometres from Alicante, and its low utilisation is precisely what makes it useful to us: when the summer peak fills Alicante, Corvera has room.

 

 

Flying to Alicante with a dog or a cat

This is the route where the pet question comes up most often, and for a specific reason: a great many of the people flying it are moving between two homes rather than going on holiday, and the animal lives in one of them. A charter is the only way to do that without a hold, a crate or a weight limit.

What Spain asks for on the way in:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
• An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the return home for up to four months;
• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a Spanish vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Alicante and the Costa Blanca

Alicante is a working Spanish city of about a third of a million people that happens to sit at the centre of one of the most established foreign property markets in Europe. The castle of Santa Barbara stands on the rock above it, the Explanada de Espana runs along the seafront under its marble paving, and the old quarter behind the port fills every evening. It is not a resort, and visitors who expect one are usually pleased to find otherwise.

The coast either side is what most arrivals are actually here for. South towards Torrevieja the urbanisations run almost continuously and the British population is dense enough that whole commercial streets operate in English. North the character changes completely: Altea and Calpe sit under the mountains, and Moraira, Javea and Denia are quieter, greener and considerably more expensive, with villa prices that reflect it. Benidorm, between the two, is exactly what its reputation says and rather better run than outsiders expect.

Inland is the part visitors miss. Elche has the largest palm grove in Europe, planted by the Moors and listed by UNESCO, ten kilometres from the airport. The Sierra de Aitana rises to fifteen hundred metres within an hour of the coast, and the villages on its flanks, Guadalest above its reservoir in particular, are the reason a second week here does not have to be spent on a beach.

Where to stay

• Hospes Amerigo. A converted Dominican convent in the old quarter of Alicante with a rooftop pool over the city, and the best address in the city itself rather than on the coast;
• Melia Villaitana, Benidorm. A resort built as two Mediterranean villages around thirty-six holes of golf, and the usual base for the golf parties on this page;
• SHA Wellness Clinic, Altea. A medical and wellness retreat above the bay that draws its own traffic to this airport, and one of the few reasons people fly here in January;
• Asia Gardens, Finestrat. A Thai-styled resort in the hills behind Benidorm, quieter than the coast and twenty-five minutes from the ramp;
• Parador de Javea. On the seafront at the northern end of the coast, in the state-run chain, and the sensible choice for anyone looking at property around Javea and Moraira;
• Villa rental, which is what most arrivals on this route are doing. The northern coast between Calpe and Denia has the deepest market, and the changeover day is Saturday.

What to do

• Golf. The province has more than twenty courses within an hour of the airport, with Las Colinas consistently ranked among the best in continental Europe and Villaitana, Font del Llop and Alicante Golf all closer still;
• The old city and Santa Barbara. The castle on its rock, the barrio behind the port, and the Explanada in the evening when the whole city walks it;
• Elche and its palm grove. Two hundred thousand palms, a UNESCO site and ten minutes from the runway;
• The northern coast. Calpe under the Penon de Ifach, the coves at Moraira and Javea, and the Cap de la Nao, which is the closest point in mainland Spain to Ibiza;
• Guadalest and the Aitana. A castle village above a turquoise reservoir an hour inland, and mountain roads that make a hired car worthwhile for a day;
• Rice. This province, not Valencia city, is where the rice dishes come from, and the arroces of the Elche and Santa Pola restaurants are what Spanish visitors come for.

When the coast is busy

• July and August, and Saturdays above all. Villa changeover day concentrates the demand into a single twenty-four hours, and it is the hardest slot of the year to fill at short notice;
• Easter week, when Spain itself travels and the coast fills with domestic visitors as well as foreign ones;
• The Hogueras de San Juan in June, five days of bonfires and fireworks for the summer solstice, which is the city’s own festival rather than a tourist one;
• Half terms and the October break, which move a surprising volume of second home traffic on this route;
