Felix-Houphouet-Boigny International is the country's main gateway, the hub of Air Cote d'Ivoire, and the only field on the Ivorian map equipped for intercontinental business traffic. What the journey needs:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination, with the certificate showing the batch and the date;
• A rabies antibody blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, arranged in Britain before departure;
• An export health certificate for Ivory Coast, plus the Great Britain paperwork for the return, both arranged through a specialist pet travel agent;
• Praziquantel from a vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Ivory Coast as a destination

Ivory Coast produces more cocoa than any other country, by a wide margin, and that single fact explains a good deal of the traffic through Abidjan. The economy is the largest in francophone West Africa, the port is one of the busiest on the coast, and the city has been the region's commercial centre for most of a century. Business is why most private aircraft come here.

Abidjan itself is built around a lagoon and divided by it. Plateau is the business district of towers and ministries, Cocody holds the embassies and the residential addresses, Marcory and Zone 4 the restaurants and the expatriate life, and Treichville the markets. Crossing between them is the daily problem, because the bridges concentrate the traffic and a journey of a few kilometres can take an hour at the wrong time.
