Airports in Belarus and the gateways beside it

What is published about Belarusian airports is thin. The table covers the six that the Belarusian foreign ministry lists for visa-free entry by air, plus the old city airfield that still turns up on charter listings, and it says so where there is nothing to give. Only the national airport of the capital has a business aviation centre that we can point to, and none of them is an airport where we can place an aircraft from Britain while the airspace restrictions remain.

 

 

Ways to get to Belarus

Private flights to Belarus are not operated by UK operators while the airspace restrictions remain, and the Foreign Office states that there are no direct flights between Belarus and the UK. We therefore do not sell a direct charter and do not publish a Belarus price. Two routes work in practice, and the traveller chooses between them.

• A private flight to a neighbouring country, then the road. Vilnius is the gateway we price: about 2 hours 40 minutes in the air from London City or Biggin Hill, then about 173 km by road to the capital. Warsaw suits the south-west, with about 203 km by road to Brest. Riga also works, with a much longer drive;
• A private flight to a city with scheduled airline service to the national airport, then a ticket on that airline. Services are listed from Istanbul, Dubai, Baku, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Almaty and Tashkent. Timetables change and some services are seasonal, so check the dates before you plan around one.

The traveller books the airline ticket directly; we do not sell scheduled tickets. What we arrange is the private flight from Britain to the gateway or the connecting city, with handling and a car at the other end. Either plan goes against the Foreign Office advice, and that decision belongs to the traveller.

 

Entering Belarus as a British passport holder

The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Belarus. The rules below describe what it publishes for those who travel anyway. They are not encouragement, and they apply to each traveller whatever the route.

At the gateway the rules are the Schengen ones: up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa for British citizens, a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for three months after departure, and a photo and fingerprints that may be taken under the EU Entry/Exit System. For the way home the operator files a General Aviation Report with UK customs between 48 and 2 hours before departure, and passengers who are not British or Irish citizens may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.

 

 

From the gateways by road

The road is where the uncertainty sits. The figures below describe distances that are published. The status of each crossing has to be checked for your date, and the Foreign Office lists the following as open: Medininkai - Kamenny Log and Salcininkai - Benyakoni on the Lithuanian side; Brest - Terespol, Kuznica - Bruzgi (passenger cars only) and Bobrovniki - Bierastavitsa on the Polish side; and Paternieki - Grigorovshchina on the Latvian side.

Flying to the gateway with a dog or a cat

For a pet the paperwork needs the planning, and the flight is the easy part: the animal sits in the cabin beside you. The health certificate is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU, and that is the date that goes wrong.

What the EU country at the gateway asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

• An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
• A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed after the first vaccination before the animal travels;
• An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
• A declaration by the owner that the move is not commercial, and no more than five animals per traveller. The animal enters through a travellers' point of entry designated by the country;
• For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight.

 

 

Empty Legs

Another way to fly cheaper is to use Empty Legs. This service allows you to save on regular charter rates. As you know, part of the flights is one-way (for example, when the passenger flies from England to the Baltic). After the flight, the jet returns to its home base (for example, to London Farnborough airport) empty. Such flight is called "Empty Legs". Empty leg flights can be as cheap as 50-75% off the standard charter price. This option is profitable for both the passengers and the charter companies. The clients can enjoy the services of business aviation at a very good price, while the airlines recoup part of the cost of fuel and jet maintenance.

It is almost impossible to find Empty Leg flights, as the information about them is stored in special databases available only to the aviation brokers and specialized companies. We do not list empty legs into Belarus. Legs between Britain and the Baltic gateways do appear, when an aircraft that has taken a party to Vilnius, Riga or Warsaw flies home unoccupied. Those legs depend on other people's bookings, so a client who can name a few days has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves.
