The Bombardier Global 5500 is the modernised successor to the Global 5000, announced May 2018, first delivered July 2020, and certified by Transport Canada (August 2019), EASA (October 2019) and the FAA (December 2019). It shares the BD-700-1A11 airframe with the Global 5000 but introduces Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines at 15,125 lbf producing 13% lower fuel burn and 9% more thrust, an MHI-built Smooth Flĕx Wing with a fully re-profiled trailing edge, and a cabin redesigned on the Global 7500 model with Nuage seats, Soleil circadian lighting, l'Opéra high-fidelity audio and 4K entertainment. Range is 5,900 nm (10,927 km), 700 nm beyond the Global 5000, connecting London to Los Angeles non-stop, Hong Kong to Sydney non-stop and São Paulo to Paris non-stop.

The cabin divides into three distinct zones across 12.42 m of flat-floor interior: Club Suite, Conference Suite and Private Suite. The Smooth Flĕx Wing acts as an in-air shock absorber, engineered to dampen turbulence, while also delivering the slowest landing speeds in its class. The Bombardier Vision Flight Deck provides four large displays, Combined Vision System (Enhanced plus Synthetic Vision in a single view), Head-Up Display and MultiScan weather radar. In-flight accessible baggage capacity is 195 ft³. Typical charter configuration seats 13 to 14 passengers; maximum marketed is 16. Charter prices start from approximately £5,800 per flight hour. For the full fleet see our private jet price guide or browse our complete fleet.

Why charter the Bombardier Global 5500?

  • 5,900 nm range: 700 nm more than the Global 5000, London to Los Angeles non-stop. The 700 nm improvement over the Global 5000's 5,200 nm is enabled by Pearl 15 engines with 13% lower fuel burn and the Smooth Flĕx Wing's aerodynamic efficiency. At this range the Global 5500 covers London to Los Angeles non-stop, Hong Kong to Sydney non-stop, São Paulo to Paris non-stop and London to Singapore with one fuel stop. These sectors were previously confined to ultra-long-range jets with significantly higher charter rates;
  • Pearl 15 engines: purpose-built, 13% lower fuel burn, 9% more thrust. The Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines (BR700-710D5-21) are purpose-built specifically for the Global 5500 and Global 6500 airframes, flat-rated to ISA+15°C. Each produces 15,125 lbf, 9% more thrust than the BR710 engines on the Global 5000, with 13% lower fuel burn. This combination is the primary enabler of the 700 nm range extension. For charter clients, lower fuel burn translates into lower operating costs versus the Global 5000 at equivalent sectors;
  • Smooth Flĕx Wing: turbulence damping and access to shorter runways. The MHI-built wing features a fully re-profiled trailing edge that Bombardier describes as acting like an in-air shock absorber, engineered to dampen turbulence. The wing also delivers the slowest landing speeds in the class, enabling Aspen, London City and St-Moritz, which most competing long-range jets cannot reach. Whether the turbulence-damping benefit is perceptible on any specific flight depends on the conditions encountered;
  • Club Suite, Conference Suite and Private Suite across 12.42 m. The forward Club Suite provides a four-seat working and relaxation area. The central Conference Suite accommodates up to six for meetings or dining. The aft Private Suite is the quietest zone, with an en-suite lavatory for privacy and rest. This separation, at long-range rates rather than ultra-long-range pricing, is a meaningful distinction from competing jets with undivided cabins;
  • Nuage seats, Soleil circadian lighting and l'Opéra audio from the Global 7500. All three come directly from Bombardier's Global 7500 flagship into the long-range category. Nuage seats with zero-gravity position reduce lower-back pressure. Soleil circadian-based lighting adjusts colour temperature to support natural sleep/wake cycles. l'Opéra high-fidelity audio covers music, film and conferencing. All three are paired with 4K cabin entertainment;
  • Bombardier Vision Flight Deck with Combined Vision System. The flight deck provides four large displays, CVS integrating Enhanced and Synthetic Vision into a single pilot view, Head-Up Display, MultiScan weather radar, Airport Moving Map, graphical flight planning and ADS-B In. Bombardier was voted number one for product support in the 2024 AIN survey, which is relevant on intercontinental charter operations where AOG risk on remote routing matters.

Charter cost - Bombardier Global 5500 prices from UK airports

Hourly rates run from approximately £5,800 to £7,200, in the long-range category above the Challenger 3500 and below the Global 7500. For 12 to 16 passengers on ultra-long-range missions, the 5,900 nm range, three-zone cabin and Global 7500-derived amenities at these rates compare favourably to ultra-long-range alternatives running 30 to 50% higher.

Indicative one-way prices from UK airports:

  • London to New York - from £55,000 (13 passengers, non-stop, approximately 7 hours 30 minutes);
  • London to Dubai - from £48,000 (13 passengers, non-stop, approximately 6 hours 30 minutes);
  • London to Geneva - from £14,500 (13 passengers, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes);
  • London to Los Angeles - from £82,000 (13 passengers, non-stop, approximately 11 hours 30 minutes);
  • London to Singapore - from £90,000 (13 passengers, one fuel stop, approximately 14 hours total);
  • London to Mumbai - from £58,000 (13 passengers, non-stop, approximately 9 hours);
  • London to Nairobi - from £52,000 (13 passengers, non-stop, approximately 8 hours).

Ideal routes for the Bombardier Global 5500

The Global 5500 is best suited to ultra-long-range missions where the 5,900 nm range, three-zone cabin and Smooth Flĕx Wing turbulence damping serve groups of 12 to 16 on sectors that most long-range jets cannot cover non-stop:

  • Ultra-long-range non-stop (10 to 12 hours): London to Los Angeles, São Paulo to Paris. London to Los Angeles (approximately 5,450 nm), São Paulo to Paris (approximately 5,100 nm) and Hong Kong to Sydney (approximately 4,560 nm) are all within non-stop range. The separate Club Suite, Conference Suite and Private Suite provide a working area, dining space and rest zone simultaneously across these 10 to 12-hour sectors, which an undivided cabin cannot do;
  • Transatlantic and Gulf non-stop with large groups (12 to 16 passengers). London to New York, London to Dubai and London to Mumbai are well within non-stop range with comfortable margin. For groups of 12 to 16, the Conference Suite accommodates six simultaneously for dining or meetings while the Club Suite handles the remainder, all in the same 12.42 m of flat-floor cabin;
  • North Atlantic and Gulf corridors where turbulence is common. The Smooth Flĕx Wing's turbulence-damping effect is most relevant on the North Atlantic westbound routing (frequent clear-air turbulence) and Gulf approaches where convective activity at cruise altitude is common. On 7 to 12-hour sectors, the accumulated difference from sustained mild turbulence is real, though how noticeable it is depends on the specific conditions on the day;
  • Short-strip destination airports: Aspen, London City, St-Moritz. The Global 5500's slow landing speeds and short-field capability enable Aspen, London City Airport and St-Moritz, destinations excluded from most long-range jets. For long-range missions ending at a constrained airport, the 5500 completes the full routing in one aircraft without a hub transfer;
  • Groups requiring separate working, dining and sleeping areas on overnight sectors. The Club Suite, Conference Suite and Private Suite layout allows one group to sleep in the aft while a second works forward and a third meets in the centre, all without disturbing each other. This is a genuine operational advantage on 10 to 12-hour overnight sectors with mixed-purpose groups.

Private Suite with en-suite lavatory

Cabin and in-flight experience

The cabin measures 12.42 m long, 2.41 m wide and 1.88 m high, flat floor throughout. Three zones provide distinct environments: the forward Club Suite seats four for work or relaxation; the central Conference Suite hosts up to six for meetings or dining; the aft Private Suite offers a retreat with an en-suite lavatory. Nuage seats in zero-gravity position are standard throughout. Soleil circadian-based lighting adjusts automatically across time zones to support sleep/wake cycles and reduce jet lag, per Bombardier described as the most advanced cabin lighting system in the industry.

l'Opéra high-fidelity audio provides sound quality for music, film and conferencing. 4K cabin entertainment is paired with Ka-band high-speed connectivity. In-flight accessible baggage is 195 ft³. The Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines at 15,125 lbf provide Mach 0.90 maximum cruise and 5,900 nm range. The Bombardier Vision Flight Deck with CVS, HUD and MultiScan weather radar completes the specification.

Bombardier Global 5500 vs similar aircraft

  • Bombardier Global 5500 vs Bombardier Global 5000. The Global 5000 is the predecessor on the same BD-700-1A11 airframe. The Global 5500 adds 700 nm of range (5,900 nm vs 5,200 nm), the Pearl 15 engines with 13% lower fuel burn and 9% more thrust, the Smooth Flĕx Wing, Nuage seats, Soleil lighting, l'Opéra audio, 4K entertainment and the Vision Flight Deck with CVS. Charter rates are comparable. For any equivalent mission, the Global 5500 provides a more capable specification at similar rates;
  • Bombardier Global 5500 vs Gulfstream G550. The G550 has greater range (6,750 nm vs 5,900 nm) and a 100% fresh air system. Charter rates are broadly comparable. The Global 5500 counters with three distinct cabin zones versus the G550's undivided cabin, Nuage zero-gravity seats, Soleil circadian lighting, l'Opéra audio and Smooth Flĕx Wing turbulence damping. For clients whose priority is cabin zone separation and Global 7500-derived amenities over outright range, the Global 5500 provides a more structured long-haul environment than the G550;
  • Bombardier Global 5500 vs Bombardier Global 6500. The Global 6500 is the larger model: same Pearl 15 engines and similar cabin width but a fuselage 0.76 m longer, 6,600 nm range (vs 5,900 nm) and up to 17 passengers. Charter rates for the Global 6500 run approximately 15 to 20% higher. For missions within 5,900 nm and groups of up to 14, the Global 5500 provides the same Pearl 15 engines, same Smooth Flĕx Wing and the same three-zone layout at lower rates.
